INTERVIEWLATHAM PLAYS THE ENDURANCE GAME AT KEENELAND SEPTEMBERBy Meredith Daughertyt @BH_MDaugherty

Bloodstock agent Davant Latham is no stranger to the

marathon that is the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Shop-ping for a broad spectrum of runners for an even broader spec-trum of clients, Latham knows value can be found between the covers of every book in the cat-alog. BloodHorse MarketWatch spoke with Latham about how he navigates the two-week sale, the challenges of buying at the top end, and the horses who have left an indelible impression on his memory.

MarketWatch: You've been able to purchase several successful runners through the years at Keeneland September. Is it challenging with the current state of the market to purchase good physicals for more modest prices?

Davant Latham: Shopping on a budget is always a little difficult because there will always be a compromise somewhere. I think Cot Campbell said it best when he was once quoted that he was looking for the dented Ferrari, because it was just as fast as the Ferrari with the perfect paint job but costs less. That's kind of where you are. You sit down with clients beforehand and hash out what they're looking for. Do they want a grass horse or a dirt horse? Do they want a horse that can go two turns or one that is quick and precocious? All of that is really just about having a good conversation with your owners and principals.

Are we looking for a filly that could one day join the broodmare band? If that's the case, you have to consider the pedigree heavily and be more willing to accept that the physical won't be rated quite as highly as it would in a situation where you're looking purely for a racehorse.

When you get to the sale, you should know what you're looking for first of all. That initial conversation with your client prior to the sale determines that. There is a lot of give-and-take with my clients. Certain people have preferences or stallions that they were unlucky with and are no longer willing to consider. Physical you always look at first, find the ones you like, then look at the page, and that will determine what you'll have to pay for that horse to a large degree.

INTERVIEW

For example, with Barb Perry, Marley's Freedom's owner, we talk about what we're looking for, I go through and look at all the horses, and give her a shortlist. She then goes through them all on paper and she takes a lot of horses off because for one reason or another, on paper, they aren't what she's interested in. That's not to say it won't be a good horse, but it won't be one that fits her. After that, we put our heads together and determine what we're willing to pay. Then we go into the auction ring with our fingers crossed.

MW: How many yearlings do you usually purchase at Keeneland September?

DL: Usually, I purchase roughly half a dozen. It all depends on clients. In years past, I was busier in Book 1 than I am now. But that all is subject to what happens each year with clients. I think one of the nice things is, if you're shopping for a racing partnership, you're pretty steady as far as where you're looking. When you shop for individuals, things can vary widely. Most partnerships seem to be fairly stable as far as the money they have and the price range they want to be in. But there will always be pretty expensive horses in the second week that are great athletes but were placed where they are because of what they were on paper.

MW: What is your personal pre-sale strategy?DL: What I typically do is sit down after dinner

and roll through the book … marking mares of interest, sires of interest, and, more specifically, half

siblings. I try and look at as many horses in the sale as I can. A lot of times I look at entire consignments, and that's part of having more than one client. You never know for sure what you will find and where.

I will argue a case on a horse I think a client should consider more strongly. With Barb, for example, she won't come in early but rather a day or two before, and she will have the chance to go through the shortlist to physically look at those horses with me. There are times I have a horse that doesn't work for one client but works well for

another, especially if it's one I really like.

MW: Which horses have made an immediate impression on you?

DL: Ocean Terrace is one of my favorite horses I've ever been around. Unfortunately, he had an injury and didn't get to show what he truly was. He was a Saint Ballado colt, and the first day he came out, he was twisting on the shank and not standing. Then he walks and gave us two or three good strides in the middle of the first path, so we said, "You know, we will come back and look at him in the afternoon." He'd just shipped in that morning.

We came back later and he was perfect. He was selling in Book 1, and we got to see him

three or four times before he went through the ring. He was a horse for as much as he was out, he was stronger every day and better every day. That is rare. We're asking a lot of yearlings to come out and parade as they do, and they have to be fit for it. It's a tough situation, and it's stressful for them. The horses that rise to that, stay strong, don't sulk, and continue to be willing, or the horses that seem to get stronger, those are rare, and Ocean Terrace was one of those.

It’s a beautiful game. I love the horses. … I get very

excited about seeing a very good horse at the sale on the shank, and I think

everybody that does this feels the same way.”

INTERVIEW

He was a Fog City Stables purchase for $700,000, and he won his first three starts in the space of 60-odd days. The third was the El Camino Real Derby (G3). After that, he was dealing with an injury and ran poorly in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and the (Coolmore) Lexington Stakes (G2). He got some time off, and when he came back in the fall, he injured himself again and was retired to stud. But he really stands out in my mind as how he got stronger every day and withstood the rigors and mental stress of the sales grounds. He had a ton of presence. He was a really neat horse in that regard.

The really interesting part about Ocean Terrace was, here was a horse that had all the talent and all the physical and yet he didn't quite do everything he could have. That's the reality of the game—it's so tough. You can have a bad step, and if Secretariat has a bad

step as a 2-year-old in training, no one has ever heard of Secretariat. It's so tough to make it. When you are around that big horse, it makes you appreciate it that much more. It's a beautiful game. I love the horses, and there is nothing more exciting than seeing a great performance. I get very excited about seeing a very good horse at the sale on the shank, and I think everybody that does this feels the same way.

Marley's Freedom had an attitude. She was strong-willed for sure. That was part of her appeal because she had presence. Even though she wasn't the biggest horse in the consignment, when she came out, you saw her. She had a lovely walk and she used herself well. She didn't have much muscle tone or definition—not because she wasn't well cared for but because of where she was in terms of development and maturity. You can't force that. But she was managed with that in mind all the way through, so she was never pushed, and when she needed a break she got a break. That was part of realizing what you were buying on the front end might be immature and, because of her breeding, a little late to mature as well. She's been very well managed.

INTERVIEW

MW: Do you feel increased pressure on the top end of the market has increased the overall competition for horses at Keeneland September?

DL: That's the beauty of Keeneland. There are so many horses that it's really a game of endurance, and people get tired. That's where opportunity lies. There is a little opportunity in Book 1 because people think they can't afford anything in Book 1, so they don't show up. Yet there are plenty of horses in Book 1 that may be a little less mature than others, but they will certainly catch those horses and outperform them on the racetrack. I think Book 1 can offer value, but the obvious horses are the obvious horses, and you'll have to pay for

those. But there is value all the way through the sale, in my opinion. It's work. It's tiring being out there on your feet all day long.

Sometimes I take a break, and I never drink caffeine, but I might go have a Coke at the kitchen to wake up a little bit because I think, "I'm getting a little dull. I've looked at a ton of horses and there are more coming out. I'm worried I'm not as sharp as I was." One of the things that does happen to you later in the sale is you start looking at horses and when it's been a while since you've seen one that caught your eye, you start to wonder, "Am I being too hard on these horses?" But about the time you start to wonder that, that horse will come out and I'll say, "Nope. I was right. This is exactly what I'm looking for." It is a long two weeks and a game of endurance. BH

CHURCHILL DOWNS PROPOSES NEW TRACK IN NORTHERN KENTUCKYBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Churchill Downs Inc. has proposed building a new track in Northern

Kentucky and taking the winter race dates away from Turfway Park.

In a Sept. 5 release, CDI said it will file an application with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission requesting those winter Thoroughbred racing dates. In the long term, Churchill will pursue the winter dates for a $200 million track and historical gaming facility it would construct in Northern Kentucky named New Latonia Racing & Gaming. The track would also serve as a year-round training center.

While the track is being constructed, CDI proposes racing the 2020 winter dates at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The application requests that NKYRG, a wholly owned subsidiary of CDI, be issued a racing license to conduct live racing from January-March 2020 and in December 2020.

Currently, winter racing on the Kentucky circuit is conducted at Turfway Park, but that track's previous ownership never added historical racing, despite repeated encouragement from the KHRC to do so in an effort to improve purses. Turfway is the only Thoroughbred track in Kentucky without such gaming (Keeneland partners with The Red Mile on a historical gaming facility).

The dates for December 2019 were awarded last year to Turfway by the KHRC. Turfway in recent years has raced from December-March. Churchill is proposing taking over all those winter dates beginning in January 2020. Then, going forward, Churchill—followed by the new track when it's ready—would race from December-March.

In April, Hard Rock International purchased Turfway in a $780 million deal in which it also

purchased JACK Cincinnati Casino from Dan Gilbert's JACK Entertainment. Since that deal, Hard Rock has not announced any firm plans to add historical racing at Turfway.

Turfway general manager Daniel "Chip" Bach could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday evening.

In a release, CDI said allocation of these 2020 race dates to NKYRG is a critical short-term measure to support the Thoroughbred racing circuit in Kentucky. CDI expects that awarding these 2020 race dates to NKYRG will lead to significantly increased purses and pari-mutuel handle, resulting in increased tax revenues to the Kentucky General Fund, Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund, equine industry programs, equine drug research, and for higher education.

If approved, the race dates conducted at Churchill Downs would permanently move to the proposed New Latonia facility once it's completed.

"Churchill Downs is stepping up to protect and grow Kentucky's Thoroughbred racing circuit," said Churchill Downs track president Kevin Flanery. "Our willingness to make a sizable investment in the neglected Northern Kentucky market is our latest effort to improve Kentucky's valuable horse racing and agriculture industries."

As outlined in a CDI release, Phase 1 of the proposed New Latonia facility would represent up to a $150 million economic development project for Northern Kentucky anticipated to create nearly 400 direct full- and part-time equivalent positions and an estimated 800 direct construction jobs.

Aspects of Phase 1 include a historical racing machine facility featuring up to 1,500 machines, a

state-of-the-art clubhouse, food/beverage venues, a one-mile synthetic main race track, an inner dirt track, and stabling facilities. CDI expects New Latonia would remain open year-round as a training facility to support the Thoroughbred racing circuit across Kentucky. Phase 2 of the proposed project could include the addition of a hotel, with an incremental investment of up to $50 million.

CDI-owned historical gaming facility Derby City Gaming has performed well in Louisville, and the company believes it could enjoy success in Northern Kentucky as well.

"Just as Derby City Gaming's historical racing machines have supercharged purses at Churchill Downs racetrack, we plan to do the same for Northern Kentucky's racing fans at New Latonia," Flanery said. "Our goal is to deliver an ultra-competitive racing product with more entries and high-quality horses that appeal to bettors and horseplayers nationwide." BH

MORE EXPECTED FROM RISING KEENELAND SEPTEMBER SIRESBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

How a sire's progeny sell as yearlings can be influ-enced by several factors, such as mare quality, how

his progeny sold at the 2-year-olds in training sales, and how his runners are faring at the races.

All these factors will be working in the favor of Lane's End's Quality Road and Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief at the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where these two shooting stars in the U.S. stallion ranks are expected to see their commercial value arc even higher.

Among the leading Keeneland September Sale sires as determined by their most recent three-year averages, Quality Road is the hottest "trending" sire. His average grew 215% between 2016-18, when 40 of his progeny averaged $287,500. Last year, the son of Elusive Quality was represented by six yearlings that sold for $500,000 or more, led by a $1.1 million colt out of the Mineshaft mare What'smineismine that White Birch Farm and Three Chimneys bought out of Shack Parrish's Indian Creek consignment. Indian Creek sold the colt on behalf of Benson Farm.

Quality Road got an early jump on this year's general leading sires list when his four-time grade 1-winning son City of Light captured the $9 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) before heading off to stud at Lane's End. The $4 million bounty in earnings from that single race planted Quality Road at the top of the leading sires ranks for the first half of the year. Though Into Mischief and Gainesway's Tapit have now passed him by progeny earnings, Quality Road still leads all other sires by number of grade 1 winners this year with four.

In this year's September sale, Quality Road has 64 progeny entered as of Sept. 5. Twenty-six yearlings are entered in Book 1 and 22 are entered in Book 2.

Current leading North American sire Into Mischief also is hitting on all cylinders heading into the world's largest yearling sale.

The 14-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday has a three-year September sale average of $202,387. His average jumped 109% between 2016-18, from $133,206 to $278,627.

Into Mischief had particularly strong representation at the 2019 2-year-old sales, which included four seven-figure juveniles. His top seller was a $1.8 million filly out of the Kafwain mare Peggy Jane that Donato Lanni bought on behalf of Michael Lund Petersen at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale from consignor Bobby Dodd.

On the pedigree side, Into Mischief's yearlings at the September sale represent the first book of his carrying a six-figure stud fee. His fee has made broad leaps the past three years, rising from $45,000 to $75,000 in 2017, then to $100,000 for 2018, and up again to $150,000 for 2019.

KEENELAND SEPTEMBER YEARLINGS

"What I expect to see at this sale is a reflection of the continued increase in quality of the mares that breeders have supported him with," said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift. "He got results from the very beginning from some of his inexpensive mares, but he's done nothing but continue to improve as the mare quality has improved. We expect to see the results at the sales and on the track continue to reflect that for years to come."

Into Mischief has the highest number of yearlings entered in this year's Keeneland September Sale with 88, of which 31 are cataloged in Book 1 and 32 are cataloged in Book 2. His Book 1 offerings include a colt (Hip 409) out of the Distorted Humor mare Gaudete who is from the family of multiple graded stakes winner and successful sire Munnings. The colt is a full brother to Into Mischief's top seller at last year's Keeneland September Sale, a colt named Snap Chap that Larry Best's OXO Equine bought for $1.2 million from Noel Murphy's Castle Park Farm consignment. Castle Park is the consignor of Hip 409 as well.

Another trending sire is Darley's Street Sense, whose September sale average has increased 187% between 2016-18. The son of Street Cry's 2018 average was $200,284.

Darren Fox, sales manager for Darley America, said Street Sense's 2018 average is more reflective of his true commercial value and that the sharp rise since 2016 is an aftereffect of when the sire stood in Japan for the 2013 Northern

Hemisphere season. His 2016 yearlings represent the first U.S. crop after Street Sense returned, and those horses suffered from out-of-sight, out-of-mind in the commercial market. The sire's September sale average of 2016 was $69,797.

"He's come roaring back. He was a proven sire before he left, and so he's a proven sire now," Fox said. "We had a high level of confidence in him after that gap year because we knew the quality was there."

Those U.S. foals of 2015 include multiple grade 1 winner and recent Whitney Stakes (G1) victor McKinzie, multiple graded stakes winner Avery Island, Triple Bend Stakes (G2) winner Air Strike, black-type winners City Plan and Streetwithnoname, and Gazelle Stakes (G2) runner-up Sara Street.

"When his progeny perform on the track like they're doing, and he gets the consistent commercial physical that he does, it is the perfect setup," Fox said.

Street Sense has 51 yearlings entered in the September sale so far. He has nine cataloged in Book 1 and 16 cataloged in Book 2. BH

THE NOVEMBER SALE

MIDNIGHT BISOU TO THE NOVEMBER SALEBy BloodHorse Staff

Midnight Bisou, the top-rated older female in North America, will be offered Nov. 4 by ELiTE

Sales at Fasig-Tipton’s The November Sale's "Night of the Stars."

Campaigned by Bloom Racing Stable, Madaket Stables, and Allen Racing, Midnight Bisou is a five-time grade 1 winner and an 11-time graded stakes winner from seven furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. She is undefeated in 2019 and has never finished off the board in 17 starts while earning $3,245,000.

"Very rarely is an in-form, young, set-to-be crowned champion offered at public auction," said ELiTE Sales' Bradley Weisbord. "Here is an opportunity to buy the best filly in training, a five-time grade 1 winner, and a superstar physical. We're honored that Bloom Racing has chosen ELiTE to consign her."

This year Midnight Bisou has proved unbeatable in a spectacular season, most recently winning the Personal Ensign Stakes Presented by Lia Infiniti (G1), running down Elate in a dramatic stretch duel in the third meeting between the two distaff stars, with Midnight Bisou prevailing on each occasion. She has also won the Ogden Phipps Stakes (G1), the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1), the Azeri Stakes (G2), the Molly Pitcher Stakes (G3), and the Houston Ladies Classic Stakes (G3) in 2019.

Last year at 3, after breaking her maiden in the Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park, Midnight Bisou rattled off wins in the Santa Ysabel Stakes (G3), the Santa Anita Oaks (G1), the Mother Goose

Stakes (G2), and the Cotillion Stakes (G1). Additionally, she placed in four graded stakes: a second-place finish in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) and third-place finishes in the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), Alabama Stakes (G1), and against older mares in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

She has recorded five triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures: 104, 103, 101, 101, 100. By Midnight Lute, Midnight Bisou was bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds out of Florida Oaks (G3) winner Diva Delite. Now 4, Midnight Bisou was purchased as a juvenile by Jeff Bloom from Woodford's consignment to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

"Midnight Bisou has truly been a dream come true for me, my family, and our partners," Bloom said. "She exemplifies class, beauty, and elegance, and she consistently displays unrivaled determination and dominance on the racetrack. She has an incredibly intelligent eye and confident presence, combined with an engaging and warm personality. She has taken us all on the ride of a lifetime and has forever changed our lives." BH

DELAWARE REGULATOR UPHOLDS VITALI'S ONE-YEAR SUSPENSIONBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

The Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission upheld its stewards' decision to suspend trainer

Marcus Vitali for one year and fine him $2,500 for interfering with and impeding an investigation.

DTRC executive director John Wayne said the commission unanimously voted to uphold the sanctions issued by the stewards July 22. The fine is the maximum allowed under DTRC rules.

"There will be a forthcoming decision and order on Mr. Vitali that will be signed at the Oct. 16, 2019, meeting," Wayne said in an email. "However, Mr. Vitali's suspension is still in force and he is ineligible to participate in racing since his request for a stay was denied initially."

Frank Vespe of The Racing Biz reported that Vitali's attorney, Alan Pincus, has not decided whether they will appeal the decision through the state court system, which would be the next available option for appeal.

As reported by The Racing Biz in July, Wayne said a DTRC investigator entered the dorm room of one of Vitali's employees on an unrelated matter when Vitali pushed his way through security, withdrew a package that was bubble-wrapped, and ran off. Security gave chase to no avail, and no one has located the package, which Vitali claimed to have thrown in the trash.

The stewards imposed the fine and suspension, and Wayne disallowed a request for a stay of the suspension pending Vitali's appeal to the full commission. The commission upheld the stewards' sanctions Sept. 4.

As reported by The Racing Biz, in 2016 Vitali

was one of a number of trainers to incur a spate of overages in Florida when that state modified its drug-testing regime, a change many trainers contended was poorly communicated. He surrendered his license and decamped to Maryland until the story of what he had done caught up to him.

Later, according to the Pennsylvania Racing Commission website, he was ejected from both Parx Racing and Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course.

Best known as the former trainer of grade 1 winner Lochte, Vitali's horses have won 888 races from 5,635 starts and have earned more than $14.6 million in a career that started in 1989. With the suspension being issued in July in Delaware, and no stay granted, he has not started a horse since July 21. BH

GET WESTERN GETS FIRST STAKES WIN IN OLD FRIENDSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

When Ward Pitfield's Get Western secures an early lead, the son of Get Stormy most assuredly is

dangerous. After breaking well in the $241,500 Old Friends

Stakes Sept. 5 at Kentucky Downs, Get Western used that front-end prowess to score the first stakes win of his career by 1 1/2 lengths in virtually unchallenged fashion.

Trained by Charlie LoPresti, Get Western entered Thursday's one-mile, 70-yard turf test for horses who have not won a stakes race this year off an allowance-level victory on the Ellis Park turf, where he enjoyed a clear advantage at every point of call. He also won an allowance race on the turf at Churchill Downs in May. The 4-year-old's first victory was a front-end score in a one-mile maiden race on the turf at Churchill Downs in May 2018.

In both of those previous gate-to-wire wins, Brian Hernandez Jr. was aboard, and he got the call in Thursday's lucrative race. Get Western comfortably handled the undulating turf while pressed by the always-speedy grade 3 winner The Tabulator, who was making his first turf start.

In the far turn, those two opened four lengths on the

rest of the field as they cruised toward the long stretch. When The Tabulator gave way, Get Western found himself alone on the lead, and he kept to task, opening a four-length advantage. The 8-1 choice completed the race in 1:43.96 on firm turf.

"He's one of those horses where he's so athletic today, he was there for me every pole, every step of the way," Hernandez said. "He never traveled like he was going to get beat. Around the turn, it's a little chewed up, but he's so athletic, I was able to put him so close to the fence that he was able to get on the good path. He was just cruising.

"Turning for home when I called on him, he picked it up again. I didn't even worry about anything else. I thought, 'If a horse beats him from this point, they really have to be running.'"

Late in the race, Get Western literally took flight, jumping a shadow.

"The (shadows from the) Breeders' Cup signs—they were waving a little, and he jumped them," Hernandez said. "It just goes to show you how easy he did it. Because he was just paying attention to his surroundings, he was just cruising up there on the lead, and that's what caused him to jump the signs."

Get Western was followed home by a pair of Mike Maker trainees in Three Diamonds Farm's Cullum Road, who never seriously threatened the winner in finishing second, and Hooties Racing and Michal Hui's Space Mountain in third.

LoPresti said they'll look at their next options for racing at Keeneland.

Multiple graded stakes winner Mr. Misunderstood, sent off the 6-5 favorite after a strong closing effort to finish third in the Kentucky Downs Preview Tourist Mile Stakes Aug. 4 at Ellis Park, never contended and finished 10th of 11. Trainer Brad Cox suspects the 5-year-old son of Archarcharch doesn't like racing on Kentucky Downs' unique course, where he's winless in two starts.

"He won't race here again. … He didn't care for it last year. Obviously he didn't care for it today," Cox said. "His last race was pretty good, and to run (poorly) like that (Thursday). We'll draw a line through this one and give him another shot somewhere." BH

WICKED RUNNER FIRST BLACK-TYPE WINNER FOR WICKED STRONGBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Sonata Stable's Wicked Runner became the first black-type winner

for Spendthrift Farm's freshman sire Wicked Strong Sept. 1 when he won the Clasico Jose Coll Vidal Stakes at Camarero Race Track in Puerto Rico.

Trained by Jose Velez, Wicked Runner left the gate in third but soon moved up to settle behind the leader as a quarter-mile went in :23.59 and a half-mile went in :46.50. Coming off the turn, the colt stalled a bit but was then shifted to the outside where he gamely closed on the frontrunner. As the pair came to the wire, Wicked Runner got a neck in front for a final time of 1:11.55 over a fast track.

Bred in Kentucky by George E. Bates Trustee, Wicked Runner is the first foal out of the El Corredor mare Herman's Wildcat.

B. Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm acquired the breeding rights to Wicked Strong in 2015 just prior to his retirement to stud for the 2016 breeding season.

The 8-year-old son of Hard Spun was campaigned by Centennial Farms during his racing career under trainer Jimmy Jerkens. Wicked Strong won the Twinspires.com Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) in stakes-record time before taking a swing at the 3-year-old classics.

After a tough trip in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), where he stumbled at the break

and overcame traffic to finish fourth behind California Chrome, he returned to New York for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) and had to overcome a wide trip to finish in a dead heat with California Chrome for fourth, beaten just 1 3/4 lengths. Wicked Strong went on to enjoy a strong summer at Saratoga Race Course, winning the Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) over Tonalist before missing by a nose to stablemate V. E. Day in the Travers Stakes (G1).

Bred in Kentucky by William F. Lynn, Wicked Strong is out of the Charismatic mare Moyne Abbey. He retired with a record of 3-4-3 from 19 starts for earnings of $1,994,460. His 2019 stud fee was $7,500. BH

CHRISTIECAT STAKES FEATURED ON BELMONT OPENING DAYBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Stakes-placed Saint Moon, who has thrived since being moved to the turf, will look to se-

cure her first stakes win Sept. 6 in the $100,000 Christiecat Stakes, the featured race on open-ing day of a Belmont Park fall meeting that will feature some changes to allow for construction going on at the Elmont, N.Y., property.

The meet features 37 days of racing and offers 45 stakes that award a total of $11.53 million in purse money as well as eight Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" bids. That stakes schedule will begin Friday when an expected nine 3-year-old fillies line up for the Christiecat, a six-furlong sprint on the inner turf.

Ivan Rodriguez and Albert and Michelle Crawford's Saint Moon enters the Christiecat off a frontrunning score in an Aug. 10 allowance race sprinting on the Saratoga Race Course turf. The daughter of The Factor enjoyed a clear advantage throughout under Luis Saez in that 5 1/2-furlong test and scored by 2 1/4 lengths.

Trained by Jorge Navarro, Saint Moon finished off the board in a pair of maiden races on dirt in December and January at Gulfstream Park. She returned to racing in June and, switched to turf, rolled to a two-length maiden win at Monmouth Park. Then, making her stakes debut July 14 in Monmouth's 5 1/2-furlong Blue Sparkler Stakes, Saint Moon led into the stretch before yielding to Missmizz and finished second.

Saez was aboard for both of Saint Moon's wins, and he's named to ride Friday.

The three stakes winners in the field earned those victories overseas. Athlone Racing's Rose Flower will make her U.S. debut for trainer Christophe Clement off a clear victory in the Prix Amandine, a seven-furlong race contested July 5 at Maisons-Laffitte. Also making her U.S. debut will be Comedy, a group 3 winner in France last year who is now trained by Michael Dickinson.

Trainer Graham Motion will saddle Bermuda Thoroughbred Racing's Queen of Bermuda, a group 3 winner in England who has earned a pair of stakes placings in North America this season. In November, Queen of Bermuda finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in her U.S. debut, where she faced males.

MARCONI READY FOR ANOTHER BELMONT DISTANCE TESTBy BloodHorse Staff

After a breakthrough graded stakes win racing 1 1/2 miles on the Belmont Park dirt, Marconi will

return to that distance in search of more success Sept. 7 when he starts in the inaugural Grand Prix American Jockey Club Invitational Stakes.

Campaigned by Bridlewood Farm, Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, and Michael Tabor, Marconi scored a frontrunning win June 8 in the Woodford Reserve Brooklyn Invitational Stakes (G2) at Belmont. In completing the long trip around the oval in 2:28.97, Marconi capped a three-race win streak that included scores in the 1 3/16-mile Skip Away Stakes in March at Gulfstream Park and the 1 3/8-mile Flat Out Stakes in May at Belmont.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Marconi has delivered a throwback type of season. Racing exclusively on dirt, the son of Tapit has won three of six starts and logged 8 1/16 miles. A $2 million purchase at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Marconi is a half

brother to grade 1 winner and sire Mucho Macho Man and enters Saturday's race off a runner-up finish to King Zachary in the Aug. 1 Birdstone Stakes over 1 3/4 miles at Saratoga Race Course.

"He's seemed to have found his groove in these types of races," Pletcher said. "He's training well and has run well at Belmont, so we'll give him a shot to rebound coming out of the Birdstone."

Pletcher also will send out Bortolazzo Stable's You're to Blame, a grade 3 winner at the distance who just missed winning the Pimlico Special Stakes (G3) in May at Pimlico Race Course. The son of Distorted Humor will look to bounce back from an off-the-board finish Aug. 2 in the Alydar Stakes at Saratoga when he starts from the inside in the expected field of eight older horses.

"I thought he encountered a difficult trip in the Alydar," Pletcher said. "He's been training well since that race. He's also had success at these types of distances as well and seems to be coming in here in good form heading into the race."

Entered off a stakes win at Saratoga is Gerald and Jerrie Stewart McManis and Joyce Young's Highland

Sky, who rolled to an 8 1/4-length victory Aug. 21 in the off-the-turf John's Call Stakes. The winning effort on the sloppy (sealed) track marked just the second start on dirt for the 6-year-old son of Sky Mesa.

"He appreciated the slop the last time," trainer Barclay Tagg said. "I don't know if we'll get that weather again, but it was a good effort from him. It might be back a little quick, but he's been training well, so we entered him in there and we'll see what the weather is like." BH

FIELD OF EIGHT CLOSES OUT NYRA'S TURF TIARABy Bob Ehaltt @BobEhalt

While the initial $750,000 Jockey Club Oaks Invitational Stakes lost much of its luster when

Concrete Rose was sidelined for the rest of the year after winning the first two legs of the New York Racing Association's new Turf Tiara series, her absence has created a grand opportunity for eight 3-year-old fillies whose connections have their eyes on a hefty purse.

Included in that grouping is Godolphin's Romantic Pursuit, who took a while to live up to her regal breeding but comes into the 1 3/8-mile turf stakes Sept. 7 at Belmont Park off a win at the distance at Saratoga Race Course.

The victory was the second in a row, both at distances of 10 furlongs or more against older rivals, for the homebred daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who lost her first five starts with three seconds.

"We are happy with her and have confidence in her," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said.

That Romantic Pursuit has thrived at a classic distance should be no surprise. Her dam, the Hard Spun mare Questing, won the 2012 Alabama Stakes (G1) at 1 1/4 miles on dirt. Yet Romantic Pursuit's prowess on turf—which shined through after three defeats on the main track, including a 31 3/4-length loss in a one-mile maiden race Dec. 14 at Aqueduct Racetrack—might be unexpected to some, though her dam started her career in Europe with a win on turf.

"We were always thinking about turf for her because of the Medaglia d'Oro part. We always thought she'd be better on the turf," McLaughlin said. "The nice thing is that she's only 3 and she won at a mile and three eighths last time against 3-year-old-and-up fillies, so it's nice to know she can get the distance."

Romantic Pursuit has trained sharply since her July 28 victory in an allowance optional claimer in which she showed speed while pressing the pace from second and then prevailed by a head after a tough stretch duel in which five horses hit the wire less than a length apart. She covered the distance in 2:15.06, encouraging McLaughlin to test her in stakes company for the first time Saturday.

"We're happy with her. She's a beautiful filly," said McLaughlin, who also trained the multiple grade-1 winning Questing. "She was very game in the stretch last time, and she's thriving now. She's dappled from head to toe and looks great."

Woodslane Farm's Dyna Passer faced Concrete Rose in the Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (G1T) and finished fifth. The daughter of Lemon Drop Kid trained by Tom Albertrani finished third July 28, a neck behind Romantic Pursuit.

Among the new faces, Lady Prancealot is shipping in from California for trainer Richard Baltas after finishing third, beaten 1 3/4 lengths by the Chad Brown-trained Cambier Parc, in the 1 1/8-mile Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club (G1T). The daughter of Sir Prancealot won the Honeymoon Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park one start prior but has yet to race beyond 1 1/8 miles for owners Michael and Jules Iavarone, Jerry McClanahan, Craig and Josie Arntz, Christopher Dunn, Donald Durando, and Jeremy Peskoff.

Three shippers from Europe were also entered. The Aga Khan's Edisa is a group 2-placed daughter

of Kitten's Joy trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre; Love So Deep Syndicate's Deep Impact filly Love So Deep missed by a head in a 1 9/16-mile group 2 stakes in France last time out for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam; and Stella Thayer's Wonderment, a daughter of Camelot, was a group 1 winner in France at 2 for trainer Nicolas Clement. (continued on page 23)

TURF SPECIALISTS VIE IN BC CHALLENGE SERIES RACESBy Byron King

On Sept. 7, two races new to the Breed-ers' Cup Challenge Series, the $1

million Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park and the $700,000 Runhappy Turf Sprint Stakes (G3T) at Ken-tucky Downs, are at the forefront of stakes activity this weekend leading into the Nov. 1-2 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park.

The Jockey Club Derby was inaugurated this year as part of the New York Racing Association's Turf Trinity, a series of races for 3-year-old males that began with the July 6 Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T), followed by the Aug. 4 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes.

As a newly created race, the Jockey Club Derby is ungraded, though owing to its rich purse and automatic, fees-paid berth to the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T), the race is not short of graded-quality performers. The race includes the first two winners in the series—Bloom Racing Stable's Henley's Joy, who won the 1 1/4-mile Belmont Derby, and Leonard Green's A Thread of Blue, the speedy winner of the 1 3/16-mile Saratoga Derby.

Both are newcomers to the 1 1/2-mile distance of the Jockey Club Derby. Experienced at the distance are European raiders Spanish Mission, Pedro Cara, and San Huberto—as well as Tone Broke, who was victorious in the 1 1/2-mile Breeders' Stakes at Woodbine in the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The versatile Tone Broke also won the Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on dirt at 1 3/16 miles.

THE CHALLENGE

The morning-line favorite at 5-2 odds is Digital Age, who ran fourth in the Belmont Derby and second in the Saratoga Derby after winning the May 4 American Turf Presented by Ram Trucks (G2T).

Approximately an hour before the Jockey Club Derby is contested at 5:47 p.m. ET, half brothers Leinster and Stormy Liberal square off for the first time against eight others in the six-furlong Runhappy Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs. Also in the field is Imprimis, winner of the April 6 Shakertown Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland. Imprimis has made just one start since, finishing sixth in the June 18 King's Stand Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot.

The Runhappy Turf Sprint winner gains automatic

entry in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T), the first challenge race in Kentucky Downs history. There is also a $1 million bonus offered to the winner if that horse can also take the Oct. 5 Woodford Presented by Keeneland Select (G2T) at Keeneland and the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Pegged as the 3-1 favorite is 4-year-old Leinster, who after losing the first 13 starts of his career has rattled off three consecutive victories, capped by the Aug. 3 Troy Stakes (G3T) at Saratoga Race Course in 1:00.23 for 5 1/2 furlongs. Rusty Arnold trains the son of Majestic Warrior owned by Amy Dunne of Wavertree Stables.

Seeking to rebound from an 0-for-4 campaign in 2019 is 7-year-old Stormy Liberal, the 2018 champion turf horse who won back-to-back Breeders' Cup Turf Sprints in 2017 and 2018. BH

KENZAI WARRIOR FIRST BRITISH WINNER FOR KARAKONTIEBy Tom Peacock/Racing Post

Evidence in Britain of Karakontie's first crop had been restricted to Karak, one of the lesser achiev-

ers of Wesley Ward's Royal Ascot raiding party, prior to an impressive Salisbury debut by Kenzai Warrior Sept. 5.

From his debut season standing at Gainesway in Kentucky, the stallion has a reported 90 foals and has made an encouraging start with a few runners at home. Karak herself was far happier back on a faster surface with a convincing victory in the black-type Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park last month.

Karakontie has understandably been supported by his owners and breeders, the Niarchos family, and they have run two of his offspring in Ireland, including In the Present, a maiden in five starts for Jessica Harrington but listed-placed at the Curragh.

The stallion, whose fee has remained at $15,000, was a three-time grade/group 1 winner for Jonathan Pease, following up the 2013 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) with the French Two Thousand Guineas (G1) and Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T).

Kenzai Warrior, a 16-1 chance for the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Novice Stakes, produced a battling performance on his bow for Roger Teal, resisting

challenges from a prominent position under Jason Watson and getting home by a neck.

Bred in Kentucky by John Gunther as the first foal out of Lemon Sakhee, he was bought by Teal in combination with Howson & Houldsworth for £45,000 (US$58,050) at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale.

"I think he's got some ability, I really do," Watson told Racing TV. "I've been in and sat on him a couple of times at home, and he's given me a nicer feel there. He's always had something about him.

"He's a bit of a frame. We were working him and he got a little bit light, so we turned him away for a bit. He's come back better than ever. He's very professional. He jumped out well and was quite happy to be in front. There wasn't a sign of greenness about him. I think he's going to be quite nice."

NO-DEAL BREXIT MAY DOUBLE COSTS FOR HORSE TRANSPORTERSBy Bill Barber/Racing Post

Racehorse transporters in the United Kingdom face obstacles to operating in the European Union in

the event of a no-deal Brexit that could lead to a dou-bling of costs for owners.

Transporters say EU rules will prevent them from working in the EU after Oct. 31 unless an agreement is reached.

However, the United Kingdom government has said EU transporters would still be able to operate in the U.K. after Oct. 31, meaning a trainer in Britain wishing to run a horse in France after Brexit would need to get an Irish, French, or German lorry to do the job because only they would be able to enter the U.K. and then reenter the EU—leading to four journeys instead of two.

"This is exactly the same as telling the U.K. fishing fleet that they can only operate within U.K. waters while allowing the rest of the EU fishing fleet to come and go from U.K. waters as they please," said Rupert Erskine Crum of Weyhill International Horse Transport.

The issue was raised at a meeting in Newmarket this week that discussed horse movement and transport and was organized by British racing's Brexit steering group. The gathering was attended by sales houses,

transporters, industry representatives, and a senior official from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

"We had a constructive meeting with strong representation from across the industry," British Horseracing Authority executive director Will Lambe said. "But it is clear that many of the challenges we face are in the EU's hands, such as whether they will list the U.K. for animal health and movement purposes, as happened for a potential departure in April, and formally recognize the stud book.

"There are difficulties facing transporters wishing to operate in Ireland and on the continent in the event of leaving without a deal, but we hope to make progress on this issue in the coming weeks."

Previous government advice to companies who transport livestock has been that they must appoint an agent in an EU country and operate through them if there is no deal.

However, racehorse transporters who have approached the Irish authorities have said they were told that was not possible.

Concerns remain about the free movement of horses between the U.K. and EU after a no-deal Brexit because the Tripartite Agreement, which allows seamless travel, will cease to exist.

"We are greatly encouraged that the U.K. government has reconfirmed that it will be carrying on with existing arrangements for Thoroughbreds entering the country from Ireland and France—continuing with the successful Tripartite Agreement model at our end—should we leave without a deal," Lambe added. "DEFRA continue to provide excellent support, and we're also in regular dialogue with Irish and French colleagues. Eminently sensible and practical solutions are available even in the event of no deal."

Those solutions are understood to include the EU reciprocating the U.K.'s commitment to continuing current arrangements.

SOUTHERN FRANCE SOLD TO AUSTRALIA; MELBOURNE CUP LOOMSBy James Thomas/Racing Post

William Hill St. Leger Stakes (G1) third Southern France has been sold by Coolmore to a group of

prominent Australian owners, with the 4-year-old son of Galileo due to be prepared for a tilt at the lucrative Melbourne Cup (G1) by Ciaron Maher and training partner David Eustace.

Bred by Lynch-Bages and Rhinestone Bloodstock, Southern France has proved himself a classy and consistent performer for Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners, having won three races and finishing out of the frame just twice from 13 starts.

He was last seen beating Downdraft in the Comer Group International Irish St. Leger Trial Stakes (G3) and is due to contest the Irish classic itself before heading to the Southern Hemisphere to continue his racing career.

The deal was brokered by McKeever Bloodstock's Johnny McKeever, who said: "Darren Dance of Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock had been looking up here for a horse for the Melbourne Cup; we've bought him horses like Heartbreak City and Tiberian before.

"He went into partnership with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace to search for a horse. They identified Southern France as one of the key horses and asked for my help brokering the deal. He's going to run for a partnership including Halo Racing Services, Australian

Thoroughbred Bloodstock, and some of Ciaron Maher's stable patrons."

Southern France has also won a listed contest and boasts some strong form in defeat, notably with a third to Kew Gardens in last year's St. Leger and with a runner-up finish to champion stayer Stradivarius in the Matchbook Yorkshire Cup (G2).

"I inspected the horse earlier in the year, so we had him earmarked before he ran in the Irish St. Leger Trial, and when he won that race, that really confirmed he was the horse they wanted," McKeever said. "His form has been up with all those good stayers in Britain and Ireland.

"He's remaining under Aidan O'Brien's care and will run in the Irish St. Leger. After that, he'll be sent to quarantine ahead of shipment to Australia."

McKeever was unable to reveal the sums involved in purchasing such a high-class prospect but noted the market for Melbourne Cup contenders is "extremely competitive."

"There aren't many horses around who fit the bill, those types who'll get into the Melbourne Cup off a high rating," he said. "But the market around the ones who are available for purchase is extremely competitive."

European horses have built up an enviable record in recent editions of the Melbourne Cup, with the last three winners—Cross Counter, Rekindling, and Almandin—all hailing from the Northern Hemisphere.

Southern France is not the only high-profile

horse set to leave Ballydoyle to continue his career in Australia. The Lindsay Park Racing team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig are due to take charge of Cape of Good Hope, the brother to Highland Reel, and Constantinople.

"David believes Cape of Good Hope can come to Australia and be targeted at group 1 events such as the Caulfield Stakes, Cox Plate, and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring, as well as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the autumn," said Jason Timperley, Lindsay Park Racing's bloodstock manager. "With a victory in any of these races he propels himself into the profile of a commercial stallion in Australia."
