ARROGATE WORKS BULLET AHEAD OF PEGASUSBy Tracy Gantz

With a workmate giving him about a 10-length target, Arrogate put in a solid

six-furlong work before the races at Santa Anita Park Jan. 15. It was just what trainer Bob Baffert was looking for as Arrogate prepares for the Jan. 28 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

At about 11:45 a.m., Arrogate, with Martin Garcia aboard, came out onto the racetrack, accompanied by a pony and well behind Uninvited and his pony. In his previous work Jan. 8, Arrogate also took on Uninvited, a 4-year-old son of Misremembered, but that day Uninvited had a head start of only a couple of lengths.

"I'm going to put that horse a little bit further in front of him," said Baffert before the Jan. 15 work. "Arrogate just needs a little target."

Arrogate set off easily, clicking off his first quarter-mile in :23 4/5. He completed a half-mile in :48 flat and began to close ground on Uninvited around the turn. With five furlongs in 1:00 2/5, Arrogate sailed by Uninvited, getting the six furlongs in 1:12 1/5, the fastest of 35 works at that distance Sunday. Garcia then galloped him out in 1:24 4/5 for seven furlongs and a mile in 1:37 4/5.

While Uninvited gives Arrogate some competition in the mornings, Baffert said "we never turn Arrogate loose in the mornings in his works." Baffert added that he was looking for a steady work in preparation for the Pegasus World Cup, where Arrogate is expected to meet California Chrome, the rival Arrogate defeated in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

"We'll let him do the same thing we did last week, just steady, no really big speed," said Baffert. "He's been all out twice in his life, in the Travers and in the Breeders' Cup."

Baffert keeps in contact with his work riders via radio, often changing it up as he evaluates the horse.

"Once he starts breezing, I can tell how he's moving," said Baffert. "A lot of it is just by visual, by watching him."

Though Baffert emphasizes that his plans can change with any horse based on how the horse is doing, the trainer said he plans to work Arrogate once more in California, Jan. 22, and then ship him to Gulfstream Park on Jan. 24. Baffert used that strategy of shipping in just a few days before when Arrogate demolished the Travers Stakes (G1) field by 13 1/2 lengths last Aug. 27.

Baffert trains Arrogate for Juddmonte Farms. The 4-year-old colt is by Unbridled's Song—Bubbler, by Distorted Humor. He is an Eclipse Awards finalist as the 2016 champion 3-year-old male and Horse of the Year. California Chrome is also a Horse of the Year finalist. BH s Share this story

NOBLE BIRD A PEGASUS POSSIBLEBy BloodHorse Staff

John C. Oxley's Noble Bird, whose multiple graded stakes wins include the 2015 Stephen Foster Hand-

icap (G1), is under consideration for the $12 million Pe-gasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park following a sharp half-mile work Jan. 15.

The 5-year-old son of Birdstone went four furlongs in :48 1/5 over the main track at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream's satellite training facility in Palm Beach County. The time was the fastest of 32 horses at the distance for the day.

It was the fourth work since Christmas Eve and third straight bullet move for Noble Bird, a dominating winner of the Pimlico Special Handicap (G3) and Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2). He finished seventh in his most recent start Nov. 25 in the Clark Handicap (G1).

Noble Bird went four furlongs in :47 3/5 Dec. 31, the fastest of 92 horses that day, and followed with a five-furlong breeze in 1:00 3/5 Jan. 8.

"Early on we were approached by people and asked if we were interested [in the Pegasus] and we had said no, but he has been training so good," trainer Mark Casse said. "I wasn't there today for his work but I was there last week and I thought his work was as good as I've ever seen him breeze. In fact, I was there for his last two previous breezes and I thought the same thing. He's really training well right now.

"Saturday I was in communication with a couple of possibilities but we never came to an agreement," he added. "We're seriously thinking about the Pegasus so we'll see how things play out in the next week or so, but if we can come to an agreement with somebody we'll probably run him."

Noble Bird has a record of 7-4-0 and earnings of $1,069,945 from 20 lifetime starts. He is at his best

when he breaks sharp and races on or near the lead. He has run at eight different tracks in six states but never at Gulfstream.

"As you know when he's good, he's really good and when he's bad, he's bad. He's ugly. But, I would think how kind Gulfstream is to speed that he should sure like Gulfstream," Casse said. "He went a half this morning and did well. We don't have any agreement at this point in time but we'll see what happens."

In other Pegasus news, California Chrome and Eragon (ARG) exited their works in good order.

Assistant trainer Alan Sherman walked the 2014 Horse of the Year in the shedrow before sunrise on Jan. 15, the day after his five-furlong workout in 1:00 3/5 for the Pegasus.

Dihigi Gladney, aboard California Chrome for his penultimate work for the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus, remarked that California Chrome was his usual good-feeling self during Saturday's work, and has taken to the Gulfstream surface.

"He has adapted to this track. I know a lot of people say that, 'Oh, my horse is doing good,' but I can't think of a track that we actually took him to that he's actually bad on," Gladney said. "He just loves to train. From the first day we jogged him

here, he really didn't want to jog…I had to take him two times around to knock the edge off of him. I was so glad the next day came around and we galloped him. He's just been all together taking to this whole surface.

"The track was a little heavy (Jan. 14), but he got over it really easy," he added. "I think a lot of that has to do with the way he's made. His body type shows he can get over most any type of surface. He went a minute in change and I didn't try to (push) him or anything."

The son of Lucky Pulpit is scheduled to be given his final tune-up for the Pegasus Jan. 21, when trainer Art Sherman is scheduled to be on hand prior.

A day after James McIngvale's Eragon worked four furlongs in :49 4/5 under jockey Edgar Prado for his North American debut in the Pegasus, trainer Laura Wohlers said all was well with the 6-year-old.

"We just walked today and we'll jog him tomorrow. It looks like he's good and he ate well. That's all you can hope for," Wohlers said. "I would have liked him to go a tiny bit faster in the work, but I'm fine with it. I told Edgar if he had some horse left, to gallop out a good five-eighths, and he did. It was his first time working in awhile. He got stuck in quarantine. He probably didn't need to do more than that yesterday."

Eragon, a multiple group 1 winner in Argentina, spent 2 1/2 weeks in quarantine in Miami before arriving at Gulfstream Jan. 5. He is scheduled to work again Jan. 22. BH

TRAINER AND BREEDER DISANTO DIESBy BloodHorse Staff

Trainer and breeder Glenn DiSanto, a veteran of the New York Racing Association circuit for more than

three decades, died Jan. 14 after a battle with cancer. He was 62.

DiSanto saddled his first winner as a trainer in 1985, according to The Jockey Club Information Systems records. He won his last race with the gelding Lotza Heat in 2015 at Belmont Park under the name of his Summit View Farm and Sportsmen Stable.

"I've known Glenn since I was a young man just galloping horses," said NYRA steward Braulio Baeza Jr. "He was a great guy. Even when he was sick, he always had a pleasant and good natured demeanor. Glenn was one of the nicest people and one of the few on the backstretch who would help you with whatever you needed in any way he could."

A native of Carmel, N.Y., DiSanto started in the business with show horses at West Creek Farm in Sharon Springs, where he began his involvement with the state breeding program. He then purchased Summit View Farm in Greenwich, N.Y., in 1984.

DiSanto was one of the pioneers in the use of the Oklahoma Training Track during the offseason at Saratoga Race Course, boarding mares at his farms and raising the foals, allowing him to either sell them at auction as yearlings or continue to train them for owners. In 2006, DiSanto had 45 foals at his farm.

Even when the number of foals decreased, DiSanto-trained horses earned more than $200,000 in four consecutive campaigns from 2011-14. His two best statistical years as a trainer were 2006-07, when he won six races each of those years and earned a combined $542,787. In all, his horses won 52 races and placed 211 times out of 1,131 starts and earned nearly $2.6 million in purses.

DiSanto was also well known for his advocacy for retired Thoroughbred horses.

"He was a big supporter who did a lot for us," said Lisa Molloy, an executive director at Rerun Thoroughbred Adoption, a non-profit whose mission is to rehabilitate, retrain, and find adoptive homes for ex-racehorses when their careers on the track are over. "He would also tell people about the program. When his

horses had finished running, he would take them home to live on his farm. Eventually he'd bring them over to ReRun, and he always liked to bring them himself. He was very hands-on.

"He was one of the best horsemen around," she added. "He never lost his temper with anything. He always knew what he was doing, and the animals just loved him."

Added Baeza: "Glenn took a lot of horses off of the racetrack, not to raise awareness to the public, but to help the horses themselves. He didn't do it for the publicity. He was a true champion for horses and he always had the horses' best interests at heart."

DiSanto, who graduated from the horse management program at the State University of New York at Cobleskill, is survived by his wife Melanie and sons Brett and Brendon.

"Some people wonder why I continue to get up at four in the morning for this," said DiSanto in a 2009 interview with the Saratogian. "Well, I've got a family to look out for. I think to be in this business you have to be hopeful and have to be optimistic. And if you love what you are doing, I guess it is not work."

Funeral arraignments will be announced by the DiSanto family at a later date. BH

ZAYAT, ROMANS WANT PRAYER FOR RELIEF IN PEGASUSBy BloodHorse Staff

To anyone holding a gate pass to the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1), Zayat

Stables and trainer Dale Romans have a starter for you. After an eye-catching workout Jan. 14 at Gulfstream

Park, Romans decided Prayer for Relief deserves a start in the Jan. 28 Pegasus. Ahmed Zayat isn't one of the 12 stakeholders in the Pegasus but is making his $2 million earner available to those few who have yet to secure a horse to represent them in the world's richest race.

The 9-year-old son of Jump Start, who captured the Iowa Derby (G3), West Virginia Derby (G2), and Super Derby (G2) in succession when trained by Bob Baffert in 2011, breezed five furlongs at Gulfstream in :59 1/5, the second-fastest workout of 46 recorded at the distance Saturday. Prayer for Relief won his last graded stakes in the 2013 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3).

"He worked so good Saturday. He's doing so well," said Romans. "He'd just come back from Dubai and it took him a couple races. He may not be as good as he once was, but I think he can be as good once as he ever was."

After the work, Romans said Zayat asked him whether he felt the horse fit in the Pegasus World Cup.

"I told him not to duck anyone," Romans said. BH

LOCKDOWN EARNS OAKS POINTS WITH BUSANDA WINBy BloodHorse Staff

Under a perfectly measured ride by Kendrick Car-mouche, Juddmonte Farms' homebred Lockdown

cruised to a 2 1/2-length victory at Aqueduct Racetrack Jan. 15 in the $98,000 Busanda Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Breaking from post 5 as the 2-1 second choice, Lockdown stalked 3-5 post-time favorite Libby's Tail from second as the leader went :24.11 for the opening quarter-mile and a half going in :48.33.

At the five-sixteenths pole, Lockdown overtook the leader and opened up to complete the 1 mile and 70 yards in a time of 1:44.75. Libby's Tail was second,

followed by No Sweat 3 1/2 lengths back in third. Frank's Folly and Sandshark completed the order of finish.

"I just put pressure on from the gate to the wire and I had to move around the turn to make sure I held her steady," said Carmouche. "With the way Bill Mott trains horses, he can get her to make the distance. She has such a long stride, you just have to time her run and let her get into her stride and she'll take you home from there."

The victory was her second consecutive from three lifetime starts after breaking her maiden at Aqueduct Dec. 17. The win also garnered the daughter of First Defence 10 qualifying points to the grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks. BH

SALES UPDATE

BARRETTS JANUARY SET, BACK AT FAIRPLEX LOCATIONBy Tracy Gantz

Newly turned yearlings and 2-year-olds will be on offer at the Barretts January mixed

sale at a familiar site. While the sales company now conducts

its 2-year-olds in training and select yearling auctions at Del Mar, for 2017 it has returned its mixed sales to its previous home of Fairplex in Pomona, close to Santa Anita Park.

The Jan. 17 sale will be conducted in the Hinds Pavilion, beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific Time. The catalog consists of about 200 hips and also includes broodmares, stallion prospects, and horses of racing age.

Lucky Pulpit, the leading California sire of 2016, primarily through the exploits of his son California Chrome, will be represented throughout the catalog. His 2-year-olds include two colts consigned by Sue Greene's Woodbridge Farm and another offered by Colleen Turpin-Boyce.

Andy Havens' Havens Bloodstock Agency has Emma's Pride, a mare by Lucky Pulpit, while Woodbridge also is offering the 3-year-old Lucky Pulpit filly Lucky By the Lake. Woodbridge, John Harris' Harris Farms, and Dan Kiser (as agent for Tree Top Ranch) have consigned mares in foal to Lucky Pulpit.

The first crop of California stallion Smiling Tiger will reach the races in 2017. Woodbridge is offering a yearling Cal-bred filly by Smiling Tiger and a mare in foal to the stallion.

Champion Shanghai Bobby is another stallion whose first foals will race this year. Adrian Gonzalez's Checkmate Thoroughbreds has consigned a yearling Kentucky-bred filly by the stallion to the sale.

The Havens group includes a yearling full brother to $477,004-earner Cyclometer, both by Cyclotron—Moana Loa, by Eastern Echo.

Broodmares will begin the sale, and the only one in the catalog by the national leading sire Tapit is Hip 2. Havens will offer Tapitha, a half sister to stakes-placed How Bout Tonight.

Checkmate has consigned Specific Promise, a daughter of Square Eddie—Generals Promise, by General Meeting. Square Eddie led all California sires of 2-year-olds in 2016.

FARRELL, I'M A CHATTERBOX MAKE SEASON DEBUTSBy BloodHorse Staff

Coffeepot Stables' Farrell, who had a six-length victory in the Nov. 26 Golden Rod Stakes (G2) last out at Church-

ill Downs, kicks off her 3-year-old campaign in the Jan. 21 $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes over a mile and 70 yards at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Drawing post three in a field of seven under jockey Channing Hill, the half sister to grade 1 winners J. B.'s Thunder and Carpe Diem enters off a steady local work pattern for three-time Breeders' Cup-winning conditioner Wayne Catalano.

One whose pedigree also speaks volumes is likely second choice Untapped, who enters for Winchell Thoroughbreds and trainer Steve Asmussen. A full sister to champion Untapable and half to grade 1-winning, Kentucky Derby-placed Paddy O'Prado, the daughter of Tapit was an authoritative victor over this course and distance Dec. 23. Florent Geroux retains the mount from post five.

An intriguing entrant is John C. Oxley's Summertime Sky, who impressed many with a local turf sprint maiden victory on New Year's Eve and was equally as impressive working a pair of bullets over the local dirt leading up to that effort. Robby Albarado picks up the mount from post four.

The remainder of the Silverbulletday field is comprised of Wicked Lick, runner-up to Untapped last time, stakes-placed Gris Gris, maiden Harkness, and recent local maiden claiming winner Seeking Bull.

One race later, multiple grade 1 winner and former Eclipse Award finalist I'm a Chatterbox makes her grass debut against a talented full field in the $75,000 Marie

G. Krantz Memorial at 1 1/16 miles on the turf course. Last seen finishing fifth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) in November, the Fletcher and Carolyn Gray homebred daughter of Munnings breaks from post 10 of 12 under leading rider Florent Geroux for trainer Larry Jones.

Richard Klein and Bertram Klein's Cash Control looms large from her seven-post for trainer Brad Cox. A winner last out in the $75,000 Blushing K. D. Stakes over this trip, she has been nothing short of reliable in a career that includes 10 victories and multiple graded stakes tallies from 20 lifetime starts. Shaun Bridgmohan retains the mount.

Timothy Thorton and Brereton Jones' grade 1 winner Include Betty is one of two serious contenders for trainer Tom Proctor along with Winter Quarter Farm's brilliant local allowance winner Cambodia. While the former was disappointment at 1-2 odds, finishing a distant second in the local Tiffany Lass Stakes Dec. 26, the latter crushed her rivals in a second-level allowance Dec. 1.

Graded stakes winner Prado's Sweet Ride, multiple stakes winner Steel Cut, restricted stakes winner Freudie Anne, recently stakes-placed Whiskey Eyes, Blushing K. D. runner-up Kitten's Roar, multiple restricted stakes winner Gianna's Dream, and allowance-winning mares Factory of Faith and Dynazar complete the field. BH

CHOCOLATE RIDE AIMS FOR E. R. BRADLEY REPEATBy BloodHorse Staff

GenStar Thoroughbreds' and Brad Cox-trained Chocolate Ride seeks a repeat in the Jan. 21

$125,000 Colonel E. R. Bradley Stakes (G3T) over 1 1/16 miles at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Finishing fourth in a four-horse photo-finish last out in the Dec. 17 Buddy Diliberto Memorial over the same conditions, he is again joined by Marc Detampel-owned stablemate Western Reserve, who defeated the 6-5 favorite by a neck in that race. Florent Geroux again has the mount on Chocolate Ride from post six, while Shaun Bridgmohan again rides Western Reserve from post three.

The remaining two in the blanket finish also return. The Mike Maker-trained Greengrassofyoming was second by a nose for owner Michael Hui, and Granny's Kitten was another nose back in third for owners Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey. Robby Albarado and Miguel Mena have the return mounts from posts five and nine, respectively.

Hillerich Racing and trainer Bernie Flint's homebred One Mean Man enters on three weeks' rest after taking the Woodchopper Stakes on New Year's Eve. Making his first start against older horses, the gray son of Mizzen Mast won five stakes in 2016. James Graham picks up the mount from post four.

The remainder of the field is comprised of Rocket Time, track record setter Blarp and Diliberto also-rans Glorious Empire and Pumpkin Rumble. BH

NYRA DISCUSSION PLANNED BY LAWMAKERSBy Tom Precious

An influential New York state senator will take tes-timony this week about what the Thoroughbred

industry envisions for the future of the New York Racing Association.

Before the Jan. 17 Senate racing and wagering committee in Albany begins though, the industry already has a united answer about what it wants: an end to the state control of the NYRA board.

"At the end of the last legislative session there was a vibrant, but rushed, discussion about the future governance model of NYRA, and unfortunately no agreement was reached," said Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican who chairs the Racing, Gaming and Wagering Committee. "It is my desire to bring together all the stakeholders to discuss this important issue in hopes of finding agreement on a plan that moves NYRA and the New York racing industry forward."

The panel approves or rejects all racing-related matters before they get to the full Senate floor for a vote.

At issue is the state's continuing domination of the NYRA board during what the state calls a "reorganization" period. In May 2012 Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a state takeover of NYRA, which faced a number of controversies during his first year in office. The oversight period was to last three years.

"We know that long-term this is not a venture for government to run,'' Cuomo said at the time of creating a new 17-member board, a majority of whom would report to Cuomo.

But the end of the third year came and went with no plan for NYRA's return to private hands. And then last year, Cuomo proposed a plan, which included him still retaining sizeable control over the board and a controversial effort to shift to the state government some of the

money that goes each year to NYRA and its horsemen from revenues derived by the Resorts World casino at NYRA's Aqueduct racetrack.

Lawmakers pushed back, and in June with the end of the 2016 session looming, approved a simple extender of the original 2012 law. That extender keeps NYRA in the state's hands until late 2017.

As of late Friday afternoon, no representatives of NYRA or the Cuomo administration were on the list of those who will testify before Bonacic's committee. The governor last week delivered six separate State of the State addresses, speaking for 4 1/2 hours; he did not mention the NYRA matter in any of them. That has left some industry leaders worried Cuomo is going to be silent on the topic in his new 2017 state budget, which he is due to unveil this week in Albany.

There are two times in a session when such controversial issues as NYRA's future are likely to be considered: state budget season, which normally wraps up at the end of March; and at the end of the session in June. In both cases, issues wholly unconnected to one another find themselves being traded for in order to help close broader budget or end-of-session dealings.

This week's Senate hearing is by invitation only for speakers. Those on a preliminary witness list include

Rick Violette, president of the New York Horsemen's Association; Jeffrey Cannizzo, executive director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders; Cynthia Hollowood, a member of the Saratoga Race Course Community Advisory Board; and Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce who also will be speaking as a member of the Concerned Citizens for Saratoga Racing.

"We're going to share with the Senate committee the reasons why keeping this promise is again so important,'' said Shimkus, whose Concerned Citizens group has been among the more vocal proponents of ending the state oversight period at NYRA. The group wants the state to adhere to the provisions of an agreement made with former Gov. Eliot Spitzer in which NYRA gave up its longstanding claims of ownership of Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course in return for a long-term deal to retain its exclusive franchise agreement to run Thoroughbred racing at the tracks.

"We will again be pushing for a clean bill, whether it is part of the budget or a stand-alone bill, that focuses on creating a public-private partnership to govern NYRA, with the majority being from the private sector as well as honoring the franchise agreement and preserving the investments in Thoroughbred horse racing it guarantees," Shimkus said.

The NYRA control issue has been a particularly touchy one for the Saratoga community.

"We know horse racing. We love horse racing. It is a key part of our community's culture and our region's economy," Shimkus said. "We've been doing this for more than 150 years now. So, we know what it takes to improve this key industry for the benefit of our community, our region, and the state of New York. We're pleased the Senate recognizes this and has asked for our input." ANALYSIS

KEENELAND JANUARY'S LEADING COVERING SIRESBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Father and son Pioneerof the Nile and Amer-ican Pharoah topped the leading covering

sire ranks by gross and average at the five-day Keeneland January horses of all ages sale that ended Jan. 13.

Mares bred to American Pharoah, the 2015 Triple Crown winner who stands at Ashford Stud, attracted the highest gross of $955,000 and the highest average of $477,500 for only two sold out of seven offered. As an indication of how thin the offerings were by top covering sires at the January sale, however, five of the top 10 sires by gross were represented by only two purchases.

WinStar Farm's Pioneerof the Nile ranked second by gross and average, with total purchases equaling $610,000 and averaging $305,000 for two sold out of three offered.

American Pharoah's top seller was the unraced Mineshaft daughter Joyfully, who is out of the graded stakes producer Rejoicing (Forestry), the dam of grade 3 winners Divine Oath and Auntie Joy. The 4-year-old mare was sold for $575,000 to Oussama Aboughazale's International Equities Holding out of the Paramount Sales consignment. Joyfully delivered an Uncle Mo colt in 2016 and will be bred back to War Front, Aboughazale told BloodHorse earlier in the week.

An even closer to connection to leading second-crop sire Uncle Mo existed with Pioneerof the Nile's highest-priced mare as a covering sire, the winning Silver Deputy daughter Grosse Pointe Anne. The 10-year-old mare is a half sister to Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) and the dam of stakes-placed winner Indian Annie (Indian Charlie). Gross

Pointe Anne has an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Speightstown and had a filly by Pioneerof the Nile in 2016.

The third-ranked covering sire by average price is Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief, who was represented by two mares averaging $157,000. His top seller was On the Backstreets, a multiple stakes-winning daughter of Street Boss, who Mulholland Springs as agent sold for $235,000 to Kempton, as agent for Not This Time/AFS. On the Backstreets' dam is Mutakaway, a winning daughter of Mutakddim and the producer of three winners out of three foals to start. On the Backstreets is her only stakes winner to date. The family has also produced grade 3 winner Jet Stream and grade 1-placed winner Western Justice.

Three other sires who will be represented by their first crop this year were among the leading covering sires by average price: Honor Code, ranked fourth at $145,000; Liam's Map, ranked sixth with $124,000; and Tonalist, ranked 10th with a $71,667 average. All three sires stand at Lane's End Farm. BH
