Excerpts: Growing demand for luxury furniture There is an undeniable growth in the popularity of luxury furniture in India, reflected even in the success of our store in Mumbai. The Indian consumer is extremely aware of international home fashion trends. Our target clientele in India are open-minded globetrotters, who have real appreciation for French design and fine details. Andpeople’s interest in design will continue to grow as the economy grows stronger. The USP We have a long history of embodying French art de vivre in both, creativity and quality of our designs. The company boasts of a long- established network of European manufacturers and fruitful relationships with renowned designers like Cédric Ragot, Ora Ito, Sacha Lakic, Christophe Delcourt, Stephen Burks as well as with global fashion houses like Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel Home, Missoni Home, thus bringing the brand to the forefront of the luxury furniture industry. Our focus on encouraging collaborations with international designers, European craftsmanship and boundless creativity is what defines our position as a luxury lifestyle brand. Furniture trends of 2015 There are two sides to the aesthetic look of the 2015 collection: one is strict and edgy, playing with angles and diagonals; the second emphasises on comfort, capaciousness and conviviality, using bright colours that resonate a rather retro, 50s aesthetic. Defining luxury homes A luxury home, like any home, is primarily a place where you feel good and in harmony with the space, shapes and materials. The materials and luxury pieces can help transform a simple space into a ‘luxury’ home. A space can also be luxurious using more accessible furniture and materials as long as they are associated with fine taste and originality. A principle of design that always works for a luxury home is ‘less is more’ approach. It isn’t necessary to fill spaces with ornate decorations or to add brighter colours; subtlety is the key to finer homes. Evolving furniture market Historically, one would inherit the furniture bought by parents and it would be passed down from one generation to the next. We now have more purchasing power, and therefore, can afford to choose the styles that best express our personalities. Furniture has definitely shifted from something essential to something fun. Mumbai as a luxury market Mumbai is a cosmopolitan city with a fascinating history. It is also the country’s financial capital and home to Bollywood glamour, providing an ideal target market for the luxury players. Favourite décor destination in India As one of the seven wonders of the modern world, the Taj Mahal has always been emblematic of the luxury and diversity of Indian culture for westerners. The gardens and reflecting pool provide the perfect idyllic setting for its luxurious marble walls, and give us a taste of the country’s great architecture. We’re always looking for new inspiration and this UNESCO world heritage site is an inspirational place for many designers. Tell us about your professional and personal background. I graduated from the National Institute of Design (NID) with a dual degree in lifestyle product design and film direction. Ajji-The Odd Product Company is my brain-child. The idea of starting Ajji in 2013 was simple—to constantly support and foster sustainable innovation and original design, one idea seeding another idea and so on. The company is based on the belief that a product worth making is not merely decoration of an old concept; it is an original approach to a situation, seen through to its best possible conclusion. We specialise in creating inspired pieces that are not stand-alone, they need user interaction. For example, the iconic Dot Chair, the Pink Sink chair, the Bent Light and Kiku Chandelier, the recently launched Atom Collection—a fundamental system of basic soft cubes that stick to each other via a neo dymium magnetic structure that can mould into any kind of furniture. How do you define your design sensibilities? Idea centric with tongue firmly in cheek! I am a big advocate of original design taken to its best possible conclusion, and working on it till it’s absolutely perfect. What fascinates you about product designing? Creating something that has not been seen before is incredibly stimulating. Hitting many brick walls to finally see your idea come to life is quite a journey. What kind of materials do you usually work with? Usually the idea dictates the medium. However, I do have a soft spot for fibreglass resin. The transparency of it really draws me. How does innovation sustain? The model I believe in is that one great idea, once actualised, can fund a whole host of good ideas. Designers who have influenced you the most? Dali, Edgar Allan Poe, Zaha Hadid—I am influenced from various sources—from poetry to comic books. ART has the ability to transcend all boundaries and touch our lives in a significant way. The beauty about interior décor with art pieces is that such elements rarely dominate your room’s theme. Trending now A popular notion most people believe is that art needs a fancy pedigree or is available only at an exorbitant cost. Art is vast and defined by personal tastes. From a museum-worthy painting to a child’s haphazard drawing—everything creative and different can come within the ambit of art. Naresh Kapuria, artist and art curator, says, “When we speak of art décor, the scenario definitely has changed. The walls that once adorned calendars, wallpapers and posters are now replaced by works of art that include wall masks, sculptures, contemporary and abstract paintings and souvenir plates. Over the last decade, the love for art and aesthetics has certainly increased, especially in our country. I believe, apart from travel, the fact that art is seen as an investment these days is one of the major reasons why people don’t shirk away from spending a fortune on masterpieces and works of art.” A few mix and match accessories, vintage items remodelled and contemporary designs are all trending in the market today. Artist Kamlesh Sharma adds, “Old and antique collections are making a special space in homes these days. Be it an old piece of furniture like an armchair, wall clock, table or a bed—vintage and classic pieces have their own appeal. Things like charkha, Victorian lamps, kettles, old radios, and gramophones can be beautifully used to lift the mood of quiet corners.” Homes come alive Infusing art into your home décor is all about giving it an identity. Interior designer Chandni Nath Israni avers, “One way to add colour and elegance to your home is to hang gorgeous wall paintings. Each room can tell a story with captivating images. Adding oil paintings is a great way to turn an ordinary wall into an eye-catching focal point.” Once you determine the style of your home, you can surround yourself with items of interest. Rohit Kapoor, founder and principal designer, NIVASA, says, “If chosen and placed correctly, art can liven up a space.” An arty entrance Open your doors to all that’s bright and beautiful. After all, the first impression lasts the longest. “The entrance is the prime area to splurge on some custom-made accessories. Focus on one or two key pieces such as a porcelain jar or vase, an attractive mirror or unique handcrafted decorative items,” suggests Isabelle Vernhes, co-founder, My Tailor Home. Modernistic designs, sculptures, artefacts and masks can all be a part of the entrance décor; these are said to bring home positivity. The bedroom Hanging collectables like photographs and sketches is a good way to draw attention to a specific area. If your room has a long vertical section, like a telephone area or a bay window wall, consider hanging a vertical painting. “The bedroom is the most private space and should be done up in a way that it looks warm. It could just as well be a bunch of bright flowers to lift your inner soul,” opines Sharma. 02 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2015 Products of pride Lekha Washington, artist and product designer at Ajji- The Odd Product Company, talks about her career and the fascinating field called design Gilles Bonan, CEO, Roche Bobois, gives us a peek into the ever-growing luxury furniture market in India, and his love for all things Indian A harmonious arrangement of paintings and sculptures—big or small add to the creative vibe of a home “It isn’t necessary to fill spaces with ornate decorations; subtlety is the key to finer homes” “I am a big advocate of original design taken to its best possible conclusion, and working on it till it’s perfect” YOUR home should endorse two essential ideas—comfort and style. A smooth combination of the two, and an ideal abode is born. Designing your home into a vivacious and beautiful living space is easy if the central interior element is chosen with some thought. Floors can inspire the décor and theme of a space, and of course, lend character to a home. Wooden floors, for example, take us back to the old, colonial homes of Mumbai and Kolkata. Marble flooring transports us to public offices and buildings. Those looking for inspiring flooring designs, the trends of 2015 are unique, smart and out-of-the-box! On the ground Living area: If you are looking to replace your old floors, think of a starting point; a colour or print that matches your existing theme. “Living areas always have room for striking designs. You can go with either Origami-themed designs, or even with something that is Zen- inspired like Japanese Line by Sian Pascale. Natural shades and neutral and pastel colours are popular,” says Firdaus Variava, vice chairman, Bharat Floorings and Tiles. Kitchen: The colour palette, texture, pattern and quality are features that cannot be overlooked when choosing floor tiles. “Kitchens are more prone to fire, that is why having a fire-proof material is practical. The kitchen is also a place where there’s clutter; from preparing the food to cooking, the floor is bound to get dirty. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are also non- porous, thus do not absorb stains, keeping your kitchen odour and stain free. Because tiles have assorted colours and designs, you can match your floor tiles with the kitchen walls. You can even choose tiles that look like brick or stone for a rustic vibe,” advises Abhishek Somany, joint managing director, Somany Ceramics. Bathroom: Colourful tiles, poured terrazzo flooring, hand-painted floors, or porcelain tiles look good in bathrooms. “In the bathroom, play with the flooring in the dry areas vs the wet areas. Bring the outside inside with fossil/pebble-like flooring or even rough wood-like flooring for the dry areas to add a touch of sophistication,” avers Tanushree Basu, owner, Salva Terra Home. Green grounds Today, the world works on unique ideas that serve multi-purposes. Eco-friendly flooring is going to be bigger and more prominent in 2015. Kavita Chaudhary, design director, Jaipur Rugs, shares, “The new-age designers are committed to sustainability—the reuse and reduction of waste and breathing new life into existing materials are important. Reusing old leather and rubber is not a new idea, but combining it with natural fibres such as jute and hemp is something that will continue to be in vogue.” Colours, graphics and more Think beyond the straight and narrow, neutrals and basics. Somany avers, “Digital tiles come with unlimited design possibilities through high resolution printing. Leather, metal and other natural hues and surfaces have been in demand in recent years. Along with being functionally advanced, metallic tiles are a popular choice, especially when used as decorative embellishments for creating luxurious spaces. Taking the technologically-driven route, 3D tiles add a new perspective to a space. These tiles have started to get noticed and are expected to do well in 2015.” Designer Speak Experience luxury while taking a walk around your home.
