Been informed that a busy week lies ahead - so best sign off and move on down the list. Great to be able to once again entertain at Care Homes - hugs and handshakes have to be replaced with smiles and kind comments, however we can adjust. Thinking of buying one of those robot lawn mowers just turn it on and look the other way! What used to be a once a week job has gotten to be every third day! Keep vigilant and stay safe!

WANDERING THOUGHTS (as we see them)

And the yellow only gets more yellow – of course we’re talking about the area landscape as more canola fields come into bloom. Also noticing the odd field of yellow sweet clover and it always seems to grow along the highways as well as sainfoin west of Town.

The ditches have been mowed east of Town again as usual – thanks to Doug and Ken – and Ken has put up new provincial and national flags along his property – looks great – brings out our patriotism in these trying times – great to be Canadian, eh?

On our weekly paper route on Friday, we came across a rare sight – a dead rabbit (guess it was attempting to see why the chicken crossed the road – sic). We haven’t seen a rabbit – in any state for ages. We are told that one is seen from time to time in the C-Store/Ball Park area.

Our “outside-the-bubble” Sunday cruise saw us doing the Esterhazy, Langenburg, Binscarth, Virden loop. Lying/standing water in any low area was quite evident once into Manitoba – results of the storm that flooded Brandon last week.

We were surprised to see big fields not seeded – obviously had been sprayed as anything green was rare. Also wondering if these were to soon be summerfallow (unusual in our area).

Crops appeared to be in similar stage to ours at home. Did not see any haying started – guess not really haying weather?

Along the Yellowhead route in the Town of Langenburg, we came across a unique sight. An old antique car had had its top removed and the left-over body was one mass of bloom – very eye-catching! The hanging pots in every town are all different in size, shape and color.

Closer to home, we noticed the tiered garden at the Oliver residence on 2nd Street – and the mock orange shrubs in a few yards. Every yard is nearing their peak – be proud Wawota – be proud!

Been informed that a busy week lies ahead - so best sign off and move on down the list. Great to be able to once again entertain at Care Homes - hugs and handshakes have to be replaced with smiles and kind comments, however we can adjust. Thinking of buying one of those robot lawn mowers – just turn it on and look the other way! What used to be a once a week job has gotten to be every third day! Keep vigilant – and stay safe!

RED MARKET BARN REPORT At long last, vendors and customers were able to meet at Sunday’s favourite gathering place – some noticeable changes, but we will adjust with patience and using common sense.

We noticed that Management #1 and #2 were dressed in “near normal” attire trying to remain inconspicuous in case of any problems. No one realized the “merry-go-round” they have had to deal with in order to follow the new-normal rules and at the same time keeping everyone happy and safe.

We couldn’t help noticing one customer carrying a yard/metre stick – guess a person can never be too careful!

Overall, management reported a good day – a couple of vendors having record sales – guess everyone was in the “ready mode”.

Hopefully the music can soon be reinstated – NEW NORMAL – here we come … …

CANADA DAY – 2020 “Very different” – “like none other” were comments probably used frequently on July 1st this year.

The residents of Wawota were treated to an antique vehicle parade – over 15 cars, trucks and one tractor displayed their “treasures” going down many streets – they made a stop at Deer View Lodge.

A major “tree trimming” of an ancient tree at the corner

of Hill Avenue and Main Street also drew onlookers.

And being Wednesday, KoRner Kones catered to their “fan club”.

That was Canada Day 2020 in Wawota.

There’s no need to drive me crazy – I’m close enough TO WALK!

WAWOTA & DISTRICT MUSEUM REPORT

The Museum is preparing to reopen for the summer season. Although we have been closed to the public we have been busy organizing/ cataloguing displays. We have hired carpenters to build a new camera display cupboard, plus doing needed repairs to the museum buildings.

However plans for this year are changing due to the Covid-19 virus and the lack of volunteers: - Open Hours will be Thursday & Friday 2 – 4 p.m. - Special appointments for viewing on other days/times can be arranged by contacting Garry (739-2347) Shirley (739-2295) or John (739-2684). - The volunteer manning the museum will be wearing a mask. - Areas of the museum will be sanitized on a regular basis. - Visitors will be required to wear a mask & sanitize their hands. - Out of town visitors will be asked to fill out a questionnaire (i.e. name, address) in case health issues arise and to assist with sanitizing areas. - Self distancing will be observed. - Visitors please refrain from touching items in displays. - Children must be accompanied by an adult. - Maximum of 10 visitors in buildings. - Please do not visit the museum if you are not feeling well.

Also, due to the virus issue, there will be no High Teas, special activities or children’s activities this summer.

You asked ??

Question: We are hearing/seeing spray planes in the area – what are they spraying for? Answer: “Scoop-on-Patrol” went to the source and asked a farmer. We were told they are spraying for a fungicidal issue. With the crops being so lush and thick, the bottom leaves don’t get a chance to dry after each rain, thus an ideal place for disease to begin. The spray is to protect the higher-up feeder leaves.

Canadians – as obsessed about gas prices as they are about their cars! - 85% remember exactly what they paid for gas on their last fill-up. - 10% are willing to stay in line for 30 minutes for a 20₵/litre discount. - 43% of women and 29% of men have eavesdropped to hear about a discount gas spot. - 30% of drivers have stopped for less than $5.00 worth of gas. - 10% of drivers in Manitoba and Saskatchewan have stopped to put less than $2.00 worth of gas in their vehicles. (not sure of this fact as $2.00 might not get you out of the gas station’s driveway).

CUTE HUMOROUS QUIPS:

• Families are like fudge – mostly sweet with a few nuts.

• Today’s mighty oak is just yesterday’s nut that held its ground.

• Laughing is good exercise. It’s like jogging on the inside.

• Humour is a rubber sword – it allows you to make a point without drawing blood.

• Inviting people to laugh with you while you are laughing at yourself is a good thing to do. You may be the fool, but you are the fool in charge.

• A racehorse is an animal that can take several thousand people for a ride at the same time.

• I grew up with six brothers – that’s how I learned to dance – waiting for the bathroom.

• One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.

• I was supposed to get a nice body for summer – but there was a small problem … I like food.

I told my friend – this morning I waded across a raging river, escaped from a bear in the woods, marched up and down a mountain, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand and climbed up an enormous tree. My friend replied, “You must be some outdoorsman.” “No,” I replied, “I’m just a lousy golfer.”

Common sense is now an endangered species. Stupidity has taken over the world and unfortunately there is no known cure.

Now that we have moisture, we now have … MOSQUITOES !!!

Mosquito Yard Spray: - big bottle blue cheap mouthwash - 3 cups of Epsom salt - 3 stale 12 oz cheap beer.

Mix these three ingredient together until salt is dissolved. Spray anywhere you sit outside – will not harm plants or flowers.

The stronger you mix, the longer it will last. Nice mint smell. Try it!

HELPFUL HINT:

Don’t throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze into ice cube trays for future use in casseroles and sauces.

Leftover wine? HELLO!

UNITED CHURCH RAISE THE RAFTERS UPDATE The Wawota United Church Raise the Rafters fundraising group are back into the “pie making” once again. (May have to consult the recipe book – it’s been so long!)

Plans are to have a “baking bee” on Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s Market at the ‘Red Barn.

Time has taken its toll and we’ll see some chances. Our “fluting department” will see some new faces – Betty Walker and Viola Taylor will no longer be with us. Betty has moved to the Villa in Maryfield and Viola to Rudyard Manor in Kipling. We will greatly miss their help and continuous support – and wish them well in their new homes. (and yes, Betty, each pie must have 14 “flutes” to pass inspection!)

** RTR will be at the Red Market Barn on July 12th and August 16th

Canadian Trivia: in 1811, young John McIntosh, a Scottish-born settler in Dundela, Ontario was clearing his land when he discovered a patch of what he recognized as apple tree seedlings. He transplanted them into his garden and waited for spring snows to melt. Sadly only one small tree survived the winter, but he nursed it and within a few years it produced a unique apple, crisp and sweet-tart with deep red skin. John’s sons, Allen & Sandy, learned grafting techniques and began grafting branches from their father’s wonderful apple tree into crabapple seedings, which were sowed the following spring. By 1845 they had taken over the farm and were producing and selling their popular stock, which became knows as McIntosh Reds. Today there are more than 3 million McIntosh apples trees in North America. them are directly descended from that one little tree that John McIntosh found on is plot of land. A small stone marker still stands on the old McIntosh farm and reads: The site of the original McIntosh apple tree 1811-1906.
