The Holocaust

Today’s Standard10.8 Students analyze the causes and

consequences of World War II.4. Analyze the Nazi policy of pursuing racial

purity, especially against the European Jews; its transformation into the Final Solution; and the Holocaust that resulted in the murder of six million Jewish civilians.

What was the Holocaust and what responsibility does the world have to prevent things like it

in the future?

Essential Question

“They came first for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist

Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist

Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant

Then they came for me,and by that time no one was left to speak up.”

-Martin Niemoller

“Never shall I forget the little faces of the children, whose bodies I saw turned into

wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which

consumed my faith forever…Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to

dust…Never.”

Elie Wiesel from Night
