Titi Kaisa hadn’t playedvolleyball since comingto Fort Leonard Wood

from Fort Riley, Kansas, eightmonths ago. But on Nov. 7,Kaisa led the 1st EngineerBrigade to a 25-12, 25-18 winover the 3rd Chemical Brigadeon Court 4 as teams completedthe second week of intramuralmatches at Davidson FitnessCenter.

“I’ve played volleyball sinceI was in the seventh grade. Ilove this sport,” said Kaisa,who ended the match withnine points, including six killsand an ace in the first gameand two kills in the second.

“We need more people toget involved, but tonight (we)played really good,” Kaisasaid.

Jaylene Faoa led 1st Engr.Bde. players in the secondgame with two kills and back-to-back aces.

The WHS Tigers boys’and girls’ varsity basketballteams will welcome teamsfrom throughout the area,with five games played overthe two-day event.

Daily admission to thetournament is $5 for adultsand $4 for students. WHSathletic passes, senior passesand school IDs will not be ac-cepted, and all WaynesvilleR-VI employees will be re-quired to pay admission fortournament games, as well.

3 new considerations when choosingyour next garage door

(BPT) - If you’re buying a ga-rage door this fall, you’ll befaced with several decisionsthat you likely never had tomake before. Before you callyour local garage door dealerto make that purchase, hereare some of the new decisionsthat you need to face.

The design decision

Remember the old adage thatthe front door is the most im-portant design element in thehome? It’s not true anymore.

In most homes today, the visu-al impact of the garage door ismany times greater than thatof the front door. Studies haveeven proven that your garagedoor design can affect the ap-praisal value of your home.

Today, manufacturers of-fer hundreds of new, uniqueand stunning looks. Designexperts recommend thatyou choose a door designthat blends in well with yourhome design, complement-ing its overall appearance. Todo that, match the door withyour home’s exterior colors,textures and patterns.

To help you with your designdecision, the garage door in-dustry has created the freeconsumer site www.garage-wownow.com, which containsdozens of photos of the lat-

est garage doors from manymanufacturers. Plus, mostmanufacturer websites nowfeature a “door designer” thatlets you see how different de-signs will look on an uploadedphoto of your own garage.

New opener decisions

The garage door and the open-er are two separate items,but they are often purchasedtogether. And since today’sopeners offer many morefeatures and accessories thanever before, you’ll have sev-eral new decisions to make.

AC vs. DC: Openers withDC (direct current) motors,which were rare 10 years ago,are now widely available. DCand AC motors are both du-rable and reliable, but DC mo-tors are quieter, and they al-low the door to soft-start andsoft-stop, instead of clangingto an abrupt stop.

Accessories: Here, the deci-sions are many. For example,you can now operate andmonitor your garage doorfrom your smartphone. Youcan also get a battery back-up unit, a real lifesaver in apower outage. When you con-sider motion detection, musicspeakers, mini transmitters,automatic deadbolt locks,LED lighting, external key-pads and more, you’ll realizehow far openers have come.

New thinking on insulation

Insulation isn’t a new deci-sion, but there is new thinkingto consider. “The garage actsas a ‘buffer zone,’ much likethe vestibule to a restaurantor a grocery store,” says JoeHetzel, P.E., technical direc-tor for the garage door manu-facturers’ association. “Aninsulated garage door makesit easier to control the heat-ing and cooling costs for thehome.”

This new “buffer zone” think-ing considers garage doorinsulation as a must. Fortu-nately, insulation typicallypays for itself. Dow Chemi-cal recently reported that, forevery $100 you invest in aninsulation project, you gen-erally get a return of $117 inrecouped energy costs.

“Once you get an insulated

door, you never go back touninsulated,” says Ed Her-manns, a door dealer in NewJersey and president of theInternational Door Associa-tion. “Most of our customerstoday buy an insulated door,and that number seems to in-crease every year.”

Well, that sounds ex-citing, Kasey. If youlived long enough toread this, you’ll beheartened to know thatyour guess probably iscorrect.

If you don’t have amassive leak, it prob-ably is the brake mastercylinder. The mastercylinder is basically ahydraulic pump filledwith brake fluid. There’sa piston inside it -- likein a bicycle pump. Andwhen you step on thebrake pedal -- you pushthat piston, which forc-es the hydraulic fluid,under pressure, out tothe brakes.

And typically, the waymaster cylinders failis that the seals aroundthe piston fail. So whenyou push the piston, thefluid just sneaks aroundit, rather than get-ting pushed out to thebrakes. That leads to ex-clamations that containtwo words, the first ofwhich is “Oh.”

And master cylindersoften fail intermittent-ly. While they’re in theprocess of dying, theycan work poorly in coldweather, and then, whenthe seals around the pis-ton heat up and expand,they can work better.

But you don’t want tomess around with a carthat doesn’t stop, do you,Kasey?
