Library News Update
ANNUAL FOLL MEETING
The Annual Friends of Lewiston Library
(FOLL) ALL MEMBERSHIP MEET-
ING will be held on Monday, June
1st at 7pm in the Lewiston Public Li-
brary Community Room.
On the agenda will be the election of
FOLL Steering Group board members
and chairperson positions.
To ensure FOLL can continue to
support the Lewiston Public Li-
brary, the position of Treasurer
MUST be filled. FOLL is a non-profit
organization and must have a full board
to remain in existence. IF WE DO
NOT FILL THE TREASURER POSI-TION, FOLL WILL HAVE TO DIS-
BAND! This year FOLL also needs to
fill the Book Sale/Friends Room Chair-
person position.
FOLL Needs YOU!!
If you would like more information
about the above positions or are inter-
ested in assuming a position, please
contact CaraLynn Pender at 786-2335
or 248-909-1754.
This meeting will also provide infor-
mation about the projects that have
been completed during the past year
and a library update. You will also have
the opportunity to provide input on
future plans for YOUR library.
PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND!
A PLEA
This is a plea for HELP.
Many of you have been a Friend since
our inception in 2004, helping us raise
$250,000 for renovations to the build-
ing and continuing to support us mon-
etarily through our Book Sales and Ga-
las for which we are deeply grateful.
Now I’m asking several of you to step
forward and join the FOLL Steering
Group. Those currently serving have
either been on board since 2004 or
shortly thereafter and we feel it is time
for “new blood.” Our most pressing
positions are that of Treasurer and
Friend’s Room Chairperson, neither require a lot of time.
The Annual Meeting is scheduled for
June so I‘m hoping that several of you
will step forward before then to say
you are willing to serve. If you need
more information about either posi-
tion please feel free to call me at 989-
786-2335 or 248-909-1754.
Thank you in advance for considering
coming on board.

If the Treasurer position is filled at the Annual Meeting on
June 1st, FOLL will have its Annual Children’s Book
Giveaway after the Independence Day parade. This
will be the 11th year that FOLL will give children an
age appropriate book for them to enjoy over the
summer.
Through this literacy program
over 2,500 books have been
given to children to help en-
courage their love of reading.
To join in the fun after the pa-
rade bring your child (toddler
through 6th grade) to the
Friends of Lewiston Library Reading Garden so they
can select a new book to take home.
The the Annual Book Sale will be held on Saturday,
June 20th and Sunday, June 21st from 9am to
3:30pm. The sale will be held at the library in the
Community and Friends Rooms (access from Lake
Street).
Thanks to our generous donors, FOLL
has hundreds of books in good condi-
tion. There will be books by many
popular authors and lots of newer re-
leases. The sale will include all hard-
cover & paperback books donated throughout the
past year. All books will be available for purchase by
donation.
THERE WILL BE BOOKS FOR ALL AGES.
If you would like to donate hardcover and paperback books in good, clean condition please drop them off
SOON in the Friends Room at the library during reg-
ular library hours.
We need volunteers! If you would like to vol-
unteer to help during the book sale, set up on Fri-
day, June 10th, or clean up on Monday, June 22nd add
your name to the sign up sheet on the table in the
Friends Room.
This fundraiser will be a success with the help and
support of our volunteers, members and all book-
lovers who come to browse and buy GREAT
BOOKS!

BOOK REVIEW
The Boys in the Boat By Daniel James
Brown Nonfiction/History
Joe Rantz ended up in one of the finest
eight-man crews ever to make it to the
Olympics largely because he needed a jani-
tor’s job to pay for college. After a poverty-stricken,
affection-deprived boyhood, he was trying desperately
to earn enough money to get through the University
of Washington. Earning a spot on the rowing team
guaranteed a part-time campus job. So in 1933, he tried out for crew, and in 1936, he and his boatmates
won gold in Berlin.
Author Daniel James Brown had the good luck to en-
counter Rantz at the end of his long life. Brown’s in-
terviews with Rantz and, after his death, with his
daughter, form the heart of The Boys in the Boat,
an inspirational yarn that joins books like Timothy
Egan’s The Worst Hard Time as a reminder of how bad
it can get and how tough ordinary Americans can be.
The Girl on the Train By Paula Hawkins
Fiction/Thriller
Rachel Watson takes a commuter train
from her slightly grubby suburb into Lon-
don every day. It used to be to get to
work. After she gets fired for drinking on
the job, Rachel still takes the train so her roommate
won’t know just how far she has fallen.
Often on those train rides, Rachel catches a glimpse
of a couple sitting on their back terrace, a “perfect,
golden couple” whom she names Jason and Jess. She is
sure they are blissfully happy, just as she used to be
when married to Tom, before he cheated on her.
Rachel only learns that her Jason and Jess are actually
Scott and Megan Hipwell when Megan goes missing.
When Rachel realizes she was in their neighborhood
the night Megan disappeared, she frantically tries to
retrace her drunken steps and finds herself drawn in-
to Scott’s life and, in the strangest of ways, her own
past.
The Girl on the Train is the kind of slippery, thrill-
ing read that only comes around every few years (see
Gone Girl). This is Hawkins’ first crime novel.
