The Mississippi River: A River of Commerce, Controversy and Control

The Mississippi River was formed over 4,000 years ago, but over the last 300 years the river has provided the New World and the United States with levels of commerce that rivals the Nile and the Amazon rivers. Despite it being the

trading hub of over 10 states, that hasn’t kept the river from producing controversy and catastrophes. The river was born as a naturally flowing body of water and over the last 100 years that harnessing of the river has provided unprecedented levels of trade and destruction. The Friends of the Cabildo Symposium will investigate the river, specifically, the time periods of the 19th and 20th century and its impact on New Orleans and southern Louisiana. The talks will also look at the environmental impacts of the harnessing of the river in the early 20th century and where the river will be in the 21st century and beyond.

French Opera House Burning Down in 1919

This 1919 photograph shows the French Opera House, or Théâtre de l’Opéra, burning down as firefighters attempted to stifle the blaze. It opened on December 1, 1859 and burned down just three days after its 60th anniversary on December 4, 1919. It stood on the corner of Bourbon and Toulouse streets and featured a carriage way that widens Bourbon Street to this day.

Thursday, January 9, 6:00 p.m.New Orleans Coffee: A Rich History Suzanne Stone

New Orleans history is steeped in coffee. Outside the Cathedral of St. Louis in Jackson Square, early entrepreneurs like Old Rose provided eager churchgoers

with the brew, and it was sold in the French Market beginning in the late 1700s. Café du Monde and Morning Call started serving café au lait more than a century ago. People gathered for business, socializing, politics and auctions at five hundred coffee exchanges and shops in the 1800s. Since 1978, myriad specialty coffee shops have opened to meet increasing demand for great coffee. Author Suzanne Stone presents the full story of this celebrated tradition, including how chicory became part of the city’s special flavor.

Battle of New Orleans TourSaturday, December 14, 11:00 amSaturday, January 11, 11:00 amSaturday, February 8, 11:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission 2.5 Hour TourDeparture Point1850 House Museum Store (523 St. Ann Street)

The Battle of New Orleans was a defining event in America’s national identity. The Friends of the Cabildo Battle of New Orleans tour offers a fascinating look at the battle away from the battlefield, from lost locations of forts that protected the city, to Jackson’s headquarters, to events in the French Quarter related to the unfolding battle. First developed for the Bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, the tour continues to draw historians, locals, and guests for a unique perspective on this turning point in American history.

Bywater Neighborhood Tour (New!) Wednesday, January 1, 2:00 pmSaturday, January 25, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission Departure PointHotel Peter & Paul (2317 Burgundy Street)

They Bywater, previously known at the Upper Ninth Ward, lies on natural high ground along the Mississippi River. In the 300 years of urban growth, the desirable riverside location transformed from colonial plantations to an important industrial area linked by railroads and river transport to national and international shipping. The dense working class community that grew up alongside is rich in historic houses—colorful Creole cottages and ornamented shotgun dwellings—and has been transformed since Hurricane Katrina floods into one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods. The industrial riverfront has been replaced by a linear urban park, and many warehouses have become restaurants, artist studios and home to a variety of creative industries. The one way tour will start at Hotel Peter & Paul, a recent and acclaimed adaptive reuse of a closed Catholic church complex of buildings and end at the Piety St. entrance to Crescent Park, with optional guided walk back to the Crescent Park entrance at Elysian Fields.

Irish Channel Tour Saturday, January 18, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission Departure PointSophie B. Wright Park (Intersection of Magazine and St. Andrews Street)

Most New Orleanians have enjoyed a sloppy roast beef poboy at a legendary Irish bar off Magazine Street, or caught cabbages, potatoes and carrots at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. But not everyone has stopped to consider the history of the immigrant populations who lived and worked near the docks along the Mississippi River, their culture and traditions forming the foundation of the area we now know as the Irish Channel. The Friends of the Cabildo’s Irish Channel Tour explores this diverse home of working class immigrants, natives and free people of color. From famous churches to Irish bars, unique architecture, famous historic figures and notable festivals, the Irish Channel Tour reveals the many facets of this neighborhood beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Lower Garden District TourTuesday, December 10, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members$25 General Admission Departure PointMuses Statue (Prytania and Terpsichore)

Nineteenth century residential life in New Orleans comes alive through the Friends of the Cabildo Lower Garden District Tour! The district’s extensive collection of 1800s residences—primarily side hall, double-galleried homes in the Greek Revival and Italianate styles—will capture your imagination with both the romance and realities of life in these grand homes in the age before modern conveniences. Bounded by the Mississippi River Bridge, the Mississippi River, Jackson Avenue, and St. Charles Avenue, the Lower Garden District was developed as six different faubourgs, and it is known for its many irregularly shaped parks. You will gain a new understanding of the history and culture of the area through a review of its architecture, geography, and famous residents.

Treme TourThursday, December 12, 10:00 amTuesday, January 14, 10:00 amTuesday, February 11, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General AdmissionDeparture PointTreme Coffeehouse (1501 St. Philip Street)

This walking tour of Treme provides a rich, detailed perspective on one of the city’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods. Originally known as “back of town,” the old Creole feel of Treme makes it easy to imagine the early 1800s multicultural community formed by immigrants, free people of color, and refugees from Saint-Domingue. An important center of the city’s African-American and Creole culture, Treme is the cherished home of fourth and fifth generation residents who strive to maintain the area’s cultural and social traditions. We will trace the origin and development of Treme through the amazing nineteenth century architecture (including Creole cottages, townhouses, and shotgun houses), geography, and urban influences dating from the subdivision of this land by Claude Treme in the 1790s to the present day.

Garden District TourSaturday, December 14, 21, 28January 11, 18, 2510:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission Departure Point1452 Jackson Avenue (riverside corner at Prytania St.)

Most residents and visitors alike know of the Garden District as a stunning neighborhood full of Greek Revival and Italianate architecture, bounded by Jackson, St. Charles, and Louisiana Avenues, and Magazine Street. But do you know who established the Garden District? What part did the NO & Carrollton Railroad play? Why do we always hear tour guides reference “Lafayette” and “Livaudais?” Discover the answers to those questions and more when exploring the Garden District with the Friends of the Cabildo. As we unveil the Garden District’s incredible architecture, and the influence of culture, climate, political events, and famous figures on the area, you will see these grand residences as more than just beautiful houses; they are the enduring statements of mid-nineteenth century Americans in New Orleans.

South Market District TourMonday, January 20, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission Departure PointPythian Market 234 Loyola Avenue (Corner of Loyola & Girod)

A booming area of revitalization at the intersection of the Central Business District, Medical District, and the sports/entertainment corridor of downtown, the South Market District is experiencing a renaissance placing it squarely in the up-and-coming areas of the city. But what was the historical significance of South Market before the construction projects? What are the stories behind the buildings being redeveloped as apartments, condominiums, hotels, and restaurants? Join the Friends of the Cabildo as we examine the fascinating mix of adaptive reuse, historic preservation, and new construction in the “Old CBD.” This tour of rapidly transforming South Market will provide a unique snapshot of techniques used to resurrect this district while preserving its historic character.

Creole Neighborhoods (Marigny) TourThursday, January 9, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General AdmissionDeparture PointOld U.S. Mint (Esplanade Gates)

Faubourg Marigny was one of the city’s earliest suburbs, located immediately downriver from the Vieux Carré on land subdivided from the plantation of Bernard Marigny de Mandeville, one of New Orleans most colorful historical figures. Today, the Marigny is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a city-designated historic district, due to its preservation of Creole cottages and many ornamented shotgun dwellings.

Initially, Esplanade Avenue was designated by the French as a commons. In later years, both the French and Spanish built fortifications there. After the Louisiana Purchase, grand townhouses and mansions were built on this European style boulevard.

Esplanade Ridge TourTuesday, December 17, 10:00 am

Tickets$20 Members $25 General Admission Departure PointPagoda Cafe (1430 N. Dorgenois Street)

A unique tour of geographic history and architectural highlights. Esplanade Avenue was designed in the French style of grand boulevards as a garden suburb for wealthy Creoles escaping the ‘old city’.

Extended block by block from Fort St Charles at the Mississippi River to the future City Park, the street was built despite objections of the Bayou Road landowners whose houses were often in the way. Esplanade would intersect with colonial and pre-colonial Native American pathways that are still present in the tangled street grids.

This new tour will explore by foot a truly unique area of the city.
