FLAT ROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL BANDS 325 Jenkins Rd. Tyrone, GA 30290 Matthew D. Price 770-969-2830, Ext. 237 Director of Bands

FRMS  STATEMENT  OF  OBLIGATIONS  AND  CONTRACT  OF  BAND  MEMBERSHIP

Due BEFORE ______________________(Friday/end of second week of school)

I desire to be a member of the Flat Rock Middle School Band. I understand that the Flat Rock Bands have a long tradition of musical excellence and that all students are expected to acquire skills quickly in order to maintain the musical tradition established by those who came before me. I understand that my Director gives his absolute best every day to provide me with the skills I will need to be successful, and I understand that he expects that I display this same passion, love, and respect for music that he displays every day. I understand that being a part of this fine band program requires absolute commitment to the ensemble. If I am going to miss a rehearsal, my guardians will notify Mr. Price before the absence occurs. I also agree to learn and abide by the following expectations as a member of the FRMS Band.

• I will always try my best. • I will not bring food or drinks into the band room. • I will follow instructions perfectly the first time they

are given. • I will not make sound when an adult is speaking. • I will do my best to make my Director happy. • I will be better every day. • I will always assume responsibility for my actions

and decisions. • I will never be disrespectful to my classmates or my

teacher. • I will do what is right always.

• I will be on time to all rehearsals and performances. • I will always have my instrument. • I will always have my pencil at every rehearsal. • I will communicate with the Director in advance to

make sure I have my music at all rehearsals. • I will be in full uniform at performances. • I will keep my area and the rest of the Band Room

clean. • I will practice at least 150 minutes/week. • I will be prepared for all rehearsals and

performances.

If I am unable to exhibit proper behavior or if I miss a performance or rehearsal without informing the Director in advance, I understand that he reserves the right to dismiss any student from the program for these and any other policy infractions. I also understand that the consequences for not following instructions are immediate detentions and/or office referrals. Parents will also be contacted immediately for all policy infractions. The Director reserves the right to remove me from the program for any expectations that I fail to meet. Student Signature _____________________________________Date ______________ I will help keep my child’s instrument in good repair with periodic servicing. I will also see that my child has reeds, oil, mouthpieces, and other supplies necessary to keep the instrument in good working order. I will keep a schedule of band activities in a prominent place to help avoid conflicts with other activities and appointments. I will sign my child’s practice record and make sure it is turned in every Thursday for a grade. I will attend at least 1 Band Support Association meeting throughout the year and will volunteer at 1 or more band functions. I will support my child in meeting the obligations to the band that are outlined within this document. I agree to cover my child’s Operations Fee and applicable uniform costs before ________________(Friday/end of second week of school). I understand that a failure to pay my child’s band fees may result in a hold put on grades and/or removal from the band.

I am including a separate tax-deductible donation in the following amount instead: $____________________ (checks made out to FRMS). Write “Band Donation” in the memo line. OPERATIONS  FEE  EXPLAINED:  It is becoming more and more difficult for the school system to provide the financial support necessary to maintain a successful, active band program. As a result, there is an Operations Fee for each student in the band. This will not only help to support the band program, but it will also consolidate traditional beginning-of-the-year expenses into one payment. The operations fee will cover a significant number of costs associated with the FRMS band program, including but not limited to the following: Band Binder, Method Books/Supplementary Materials, Clinician Fees, Music (the cost of one band piece is between $50 and $100), pencil pouches, pencils, garment bags, maintenance costs for instruments, uniform cleaning, and various other miscellaneous expenses.

GRADES:        Playing and Written Tests (50%)—Chair placement will result from playing tests. Placement is extremely competitive. Daily Class Performance (40%) Students will be given points based on preparation for class. Students must have their instruments, music, and pencils. Behavior is also a major component of this grade. Band Homework and Correspondence (10%)—Practice Records due each Thursday. INSTRUMENT  AND  MUSIC  STORAGE  The band room has shelves that can be used to store instruments during the day only. All instruments should be taken home daily. We have cameras installed to provide maximum security and to deter tampering. It is still a good idea to put some type of locking device on the case. This will help in providing maximum security. All instruments, cases, and books must be clearly identified with the student’s name at all times. Instruments and equipment are the responsibility of each individual musician. PLEASE LABEL ALL INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENT ON THE OUTSIDE!! PRIVATE  LESSONS  Private lessons are for all students – beginners, those who are struggling, and advanced students. Anyone can benefit from a private instructor. Flat Rock Band Students are expected to have a private instructor. Please let Mr. Price know who your child’s private instructor is. A list of private instructors is found below.

WITHDRAWING  FROM  THE  FRMS  BAND  PROGRAM  Students who join the FRMS Band program are making a commitment to a three-year, progressive course. While it is my hope that every student will remain in band throughout middle school and even into high school, I realize that some may decide to choose a different path. However, these individual decisions, though unintentional, can be detrimental to the remainder of the band. The following policy has been implemented to maintain the integrity of the ensembles: • 6th Grade and Concert Band Students may withdraw within the first ten days of school OR at the end

of the first semester. • Symphonic Band Students are making a year- long commitment. • Teacher request for schedule change – Parents/guardians of students who are disruptive, destructive, or

unwilling to work will be contacted to discuss dismissal from the band program. If a student has an IEP, the special education teacher will be consulted and encouraged to attend the conference.

MATERIALS  LIST    You are strongly encouraged to obtain the items on this list. Due to excessive abuse of equipment, all percussion students will be required to obtain the materials on the percussion equipment list. Not only will having individual equipment deter misuse, but this will also create a better sense of pride and responsibility amongst the percussionists. We strongly suggest that students who play instruments requiring reeds get reeds by the box. This is much more economical and convenient than running to the store every time one breaks (and they WILL break...frequently). Advanced wind instrument players are also encouraged to obtain step-up mouthpieces for their instruments (some students may have these already). Such a mouthpiece will show great improvement in the quality of sound produced by the student, and is an appealing option when compared to the cost of purchasing a new instrument. A beginner instrument will often sound very similar to a professional model when outfitted with a step-up mouthpiece. We highly recommend searching online for the best prices. A list of music vendors will be available on our website for your convenience. We do suggest, however, that you call to be certain your items are in stock before making a trip to the store.

PURCHASING  NEW  INSTRUMENTS  As a student’s interest in and commitment to the band program intensifies, parents often seek to purchase a higher quality instrument. There are three basic “grades” of musical instruments available for purchase. Beginner These instruments are used by younger students and are designed with the beginner band student in mind. They will withstand a moderate amount of the abuse that younger students tend to inflict on their instruments (accidentally, of course!). Intermediate These instruments are sometimes called “step-ups.” Advanced middle school students and high school students typically play them. These instruments are of a higher quality than beginner instruments. They will have nicer features and will not withstand as much abuse as the beginner model. Parents and students should notice a significant improvement in sound quality shortly after a student moves to this level of instrument. Professional The most serious middle and high school students, college music majors, and professionals use these instruments. These instruments are of the finest quality and craftsmanship, and will produce the truest symphonic sounds. They will withstand very little abuse, and cost substantially more than the beginner and step-up models. Professional model instruments are exclusively for those who have a long-term commitment to music. SCHOOL  OWNED  INSTRUMENTS  When using a school owned instrument please treat it as though it were your very own. You will be assessed a $50 rental fee per instrument for the year to cover regular and routine maintenance. Students using school-owned instruments will be required to provide their own mouthpieces. The school has an instrument repair man who comes in every week. The school uses your band instrument usage fee to pay for minor repairs of the school owned instruments. In the event of loss or major damages inflicted upon the instrument (major scratches, dents, dented valves, broken piping, curled bells, etc.) the guardian is financially responsible for replacement/repair. If you want our on site repairman to be able to work on your child’s personal instrument, please complete the form at http://www.bignotemusic.biz/. Please click on Instrument Repair Request. There is also an app for that! You can simply search for Big Not Music and download the application to your apple or android smart phone so you can submit your order as soon as the repair is needed!

INSTRUMENT  MAINTENANCE  All instruments must receive regular maintenance. The basics are provided below.

For more detailed information, please see the Band Director.

Woodwinds General • Swab the bore after each playing session. • Periodically oil the keys. • Wipe the keys and body clean with a soft cotton cloth after playing. Flute • Periodically check the position of the tuning cork. Clarinet and Saxes • Rinse the mouthpiece daily with warm water and avoid mouthpiece brushes. • Always have spare reeds. Rotate them so that you have at least three broken in at a time. • Buy a reed guard and use it. It will pay for itself within a few weeks. Double Reeds • Soak reeds before playing on them to avoid cracks. • Learn to make your own reeds or at least to adjust the ones you buy commercially. Percussion • Avoid damage to heads by using the proper sticks or beaters for each instrument. • Become familiar with proper techniques of changing heads, tuning and routine maintenance. • Keep instrument clean and dry.

Brass Instruments General • Run lukewarm water through the instrument at least once a week and give it a bath at least once a month. Never use hot water. • Wear cotton gloves while playing and wipe off all fingerprints after each use. • Never use brass or other metal polish on brass lacquer finish (shiny gold) instruments. Use a clean cotton cloth and water to wipe instruments clean. On silver-plated instruments, use a non- abrasive silver polish such as International, Twinkle, or Wright's. • Use tuning slide grease on all tuning slides. • Periodically check corks on water keys to make sure that they are sealing properly. • Vacuum your case to keep sand and dirt from scratching the instrument finish. Piston-Valve Instruments • Use fresh valve oil as needed. • Be sure fingers remain curved while playing so that the valve action is straight up and down. This will avoid uneven wear on the pistons. • Check felts to make sure that they are not worn or compacted. Replace as needed. Trombones • Use trombone slide cream such as Super-Slick or Trombontine and a spray bottle of water on slide. Do not use oil. • If trombone has a rotary trigger, use rotary valve oil. Rotary Valve Instruments • Use rotary valve oil

BAND  STORE—There will be a reed store in the band room. If your child needs a reed, the following amount of money will need to be provided at the time of purchase. If the student is unable to provide the amount at the time the reed is provided, the amount will be added to the student’s Charms band account which you can monitor daily. The Director will send guardians an email if your student’s account is being charged for a reed purchase.

Reeds Cost per Reed Clarinet V12 Vandoren $3.00/reed Bass Clarinet $4.00/reed Contra Alto Bass Clarinet $5.50/reed Alto Saxophone $3.00/reed Tenor Saxophone $4.00/reed Baritone Saxophone $7.00/reed Ligatures $50.00/ligature

SMART  MUSIC  This program is like having a private instructor with your student EVERY TIME he/she practices! Internet access needed. Let the Director know if you do not have Internet access.

o Students can choose to play along with thousands of pieces in the Smart Music library, and they can learn how their part fits within the ensemble through accompaniment that sounds just like the band in class.

o Smart Music reminds students of HOW to play each note by simply hovering over each note. o Students can LEARN THEIR ALL STATE MUSIC too. o Students can move at their own pace by controlling the tempo and click track with subdivisions—

They can practice pieces as slow or as fast as they want/need AND the real band sound actually still sounds like a real band—just faster or slower…so the student can REALLY feel like they are playing with the band at all times—thus improving confidence in performance!

o Students can Isolate difficult parts in the music of any length with the loop tool—practice over and over until it’s correct, record and play back their practice sessions for self assessment, send MP3 recordings to family members and friends, have access to solo repertoire and can practice with an accompaniment that actually follows the student!

Student_________________________________________________________________ Instrument_______________________________SerialNumber____________________ Condition________________________________ In signing the contract, parents/guardians are assuming responsibility for any repairs incurred during the period of use of an instrument owned by FRMS. In the event of loss or major damages inflicted upon the instrument (major scratches, dents, dented valves, broken piping, curled bells, etc.) the student (guardian) is financially responsible for replacement/repair. I understand that I am responsible for cleaning instruments and performing regular upkeep duties, such as oiling valves, greasing slides, and applying cork grease where needed. I also understand that I am required to keep cases latched and dusted when my instrument is not being used.
