Culture consists of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted by symbols,

constituting the distinctive achievements of humangroups, including their embodiments in artifacts; theessential core of culture consists of traditional (i.e.,historically derived and selected) ideas [beliefs] andespecially their attached values; culture systems may,on the one hand, be considered as products of action,on the other, as conditioning elements of furtheraction.from The Practical Skeptic: Core Concepts , Lisa McIntyre.

That’s why we’re like sh in water when it comesto culture.

But sometimes we get a grasp on it when we seehow it differs across societies

For example, what happened in 1492?

Pop culture may be a means of overcoming thecontrolling interests of the socially powerful whohave historically used culture to maintain classdistinctions and limit class mobility (even when

economic growth moves individuals up in economicclass)

Accepting this hypothesis requires evidence that pop

culture is democratic, grassroots, a product of themasses.

But is it?
