CHAIRMAN’S
ADDRESSAs the country moves towards its goal ofbecoming a high-income nation by 2020in line with the National Economic Policy, technological innovation will be key to itsgrowth. We envision SIRIM as one of thecatalysts for driving the creation of a higher-income nation. A rejuvenated SIRIM will beable to lead the growth of technology firms, promotingsolutionsinqualityandtechnologicalinnovationfortheindustry.
SIRIM serves all Malaysians – companiesas well as communities. As the nation’sspearhead of research and innovation, SIRIMsupportsbusinesseswithtotalsolutionsacrossthe value chain, from ideation to prototypingandcommercialisation.Butwehaveadutytodomorethanjustdelivernewproductstothemarket;wemustcontinuetofindwaystobringtechnology’sbenefitstosocietyaswell.
Following the introduction of theSix StrategyTransformation Plan in 2012, I am pleasedto report that SIRIM has evolved to becomea more sustainable, responsive and efficientproviderofintegratedsolutions.In2013,SIRIMrealigned and refocused its developmentalactivities into three Flagships: Energy andEnvironment, Medical Technology and PlantandMachinery.
SIRIM’sflagshipsandcentreswillcontinuetobe a pivotal part of the national science andtechnology ecosystem. Through strategicpartnershipsandcollaborationswithboth theprivate sector and government, the companywilldriveinnovationinNationalKeyEconomicAreas (NKEAs) such as Oil, Gas and Energyas well as Healthcare. These collaborationsrepresent mutually beneficial opportunities:
SIRIM will gain a deeper understanding ofthe needs of the market even as it activelysupportsthecapabilitiesandoperationsofitscustomers.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Science, Technologyand Innovation (MOSTI) declared 2014 asMOSTICommercialisationYear, withthegoalofincreasing Malaysia’s commercialisation rateand fostering the growth of high-technologyentrepreneurs.SIRIMispositionedtomeetthischallengewithseveralsuccessfulprojectsthatarenowreadyforcommercialisation,includingthe BioNatural Gas (BioNG) project, and theSolaerator™, a solar-powered aquacultureaeration system launched in Simunjan,Sarawak.

Meanwhile, in the field of conformityassessment, SIRIMQAS International cateredto the changing needs of the industry withthe launch of two new schemes - the IECExCertification of Personnel Competence forExplosive Atmospheres and the Road TrafficSafety Management System Certification(ISO39001).
Malaysia has identified the importance of scientific innovation in driving its transformation into a developed economy. A knowledge-based high-technology economy will require a constant stream of innovations in order to maintain a competitive edge on the increasingly globalised world stage. Having transformed itself to meet this challenge, SIRIM must continue to balance its activities to deliver positive impacts to both businesses and the community.
