Marcos’s New SocietyMarcos promise of a new society that would solve insurgency, criminality, and poverty helped to quiet down dissent from the majority of the population and also was self-disciplined, self-reliant, prosperous and peaceful, thus, marcos formed the following bureaucracy:

•National Economic And Development Authority(NEDA)•National Grains Authority(NGA)•Population Commission

Worsening Economic & Political Crises

Marcos’s massive infrastructure projects led to massive foreign loans. Land reform proved slow and inadequate due to lack of funds, budget cuts on education and other social services and also more money was being allotted to the military.

Poor farmers began to be deprived, deterioration of the economy, like rise in prices commodities and poor salaries.

So this was the beginning of the dictatorship.

In his 13 year of power from 1965-1978 Marcos called for the elections of the interm batasang pambansa(legislature) the opposition party LABAN against Marcos’s KBL competed for victory.

Marcos’s KBL dominated the LABAN party list and win. Thus, Marcos’s power to issue presidential decrees remained.

Mass Movements To End Martial Rule

Many organization have immerged like kabataang makabayan, kilusang magbubukid ng pilipinas, and samahan ng demokratikong kabataan to protest to the exercise of absolute control by marcos took the form hunger strikes by political prisoners inside their prison cells.

Also the church protest was triggered by the rise in salvagings or in summary executions and disappearances it included priest, pastors, nuns, lay church workers, tribal minorities, and urban poor. Amnesty International with 8,000 cases salvaging records, and 50,000 people arrested and detained.

1973 former senator Ninoy Aquino was imprisoned

Allowed to go to U.S for medical treatment

Marcos is affected by lupus and lack of Vice President posed a big problem on his leadership

August 21 – Ninoy Returns to the Philippines using the name Marcial Bonifacio

August 21, 1983 - Ninoy was gunned down

The Assasin – a lone gunman hired by the communists,also lay dead after being gunned down by soldiers

Ninoys funeral took 11 hours from QC to memorial park of Paranaque

In the following months rallies and mass actions were held to challenge Marcos

Demonstrators bravely faced the police who were are with water canons,tear gas and other dispersal weapons

The Opposition held a mass protest joined by the catholic church

The 1986 Snap ElectionsFebruary 7 1986 – Marcos

announced that he was ready for snap presidential election

Corazon “Cory” Aquino wife of Ninoy is the oppositions candidate for president with Salvador Laurel as vice

NAMFREL is organized by concerned citizens to ensure clean and fair elections

The 1986 Snap ElectionsInitial counting of votes by the

COMELEC showed Marcos is leading by 1.2 million votes

NAMFREL’s tally shows that Cory wins the election

38 computer programmers of COMELEC walked out in protest of COMELEC’s attempt to manipulate the results

People were enraged causing rallies to be held in Makati

The 1986 Snap ElectionsFeb 20 1986 – Marcos declared

as President and Arturo Tolentino as Vice

On the same day cory in a “peoples victory rally” at Rizal Park called for civil disobendience

According to NAMFREL final votes shows 7,835,070 over Marcos’s 7,053,068

PEOPLE POWER AT EDSAJuan Ponce Enrile (Secretary of

National Defense) together with Fidel V Ramos oraganized “coup d’etat” held at Camp Aguinaldo

Cardinal Sin anounced over the radio to help the soldiers at Camp Aguinaldo

General Ver’s forces were ready to deal with the “rebe; soldiers”

military Prayers, flowers,bread and drinks

offered by the people stopped the attacking of Marcos soldiers who were aboard trucks and tanks

Climax, Marcos’s helicopter pilots refused to drop bombs on the crowd and instead landed the helicopter to join the people power

Marcos as newly elected president was stopped

The U.S government offered help Marcos and his family, along with Danding Cojuanco to flee in hawaii to escape the wrath of the avenging horde
