Honourable Michael Coteau, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration

Michael Coteau was elected to the legislature in 2011 as the MPP for Don Valley East. He was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration in February, 2013. Prior to

entering government, Coteau served as a school board trustee for almost eight years.

As a trustee, Coteau worked to make schools more accessible to community groups that run after-school programs for children. He also served as the Vice-Chair of the Toronto District School Board and helped to bring forward nutritional changes that increased awareness of student hunger, and resulted in healthy food programs. In

addition, he is a champion of the integration of technology in education.

Coteau is a former CEO and Executive Director of a national literacy not-for-profit, AlphaPlus. He was also a member of the board of the Toronto Foundation for Student

Success, and the board of the Toronto Land Corporation.

Sandra is responsible for all aspects of the Information Communication Technology Council’s (ICTC) talent and diversity initiatives, collaborating with businesses, HR and talent partners on strategies and actions to leverage the talent of today and tomorrow in Canada’s digital economy.

As a champion in the promotion and development of diversity and inclusion programs across Canada and globally, Sandra has particularly focused on initiatives that involve the recruitment, retention, integration and advancement of women, global talent, Aboriginal peoples, and youth in ICT.

This workshop will cover some basics about getting curriculum materials ready to post in Tutela. It will include best practices for publishing curriculum materials, either in print or online. You’ll work with a template that identifies the essentials that ensure readers can find and make the most of your curriculum.

This workshop will provide resources and the opportunity for discussion on strategies that will assist principals in the development of School Improvement Plans that support the Board Improvement Plans. A panel of principals will share their experiences in creating School Improvement Plans.

There are currently two useful iPad apps for Desire2Learn users:- Desire2Learn Assignment Grader provides quick and easy access to assignments allowing you to assess using rubrics, annotate with online comments, and provide personalized text, audio or video feedback.

- The Binder App allows learners to easily pull instructor posted lecture notes and learning resources from the Desire2Learn Learning Environment directly into the Binder app to work with - online or offline – learners can then annotate and mark-up these notes for future reference

During the session we will explore these two apps and discuss possible uses.

e-Learning continues to expand across the province as an alternate platform through which an increasing number of students are taking courses and earning credits. This workshop will explore ways in which eLearning can augment/support/enhance credit programs through Alternative Education, Summer School, and other credit programs. Participants will be introduced to the Desire2Learn (D2L) platform and the resources available within it, and explore ways in which those resources can be utilized to enrich current credit programs and develop new ones.

The OECD recently released findings from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), a new international study of adult literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills. In this session, we will discuss PIAAC results in Ontario, how LBS programs can start thinking about what these workforce changes mean and how we can better assist learners in developing the skills that will help them succeed in obtaining work and progressing in the workplace.

Jean-Pierre va présenter la feuille de route utilisée par son équipe dans to établissement Carrefour Options+ afin d’assurer le suivi de ses élèves. Clovis et Johanne vont présenter le travail ainsi que les outils développés par les PÉFA de l’est (littératie-évaluation) et du sud (Aiguillage vers le DESO). Il vont également nous présenter les objectifs de leurs PÉFA pour la prochaine année.

Single parents face many barriers to finishing high school and gaining the skills they need for the changing workforce, while continuing to manage their many parental responsibilities. This workshop will provide an overview of the single parent initiatives that are being piloted at six school boards, and will include a panel presentation by adult and continuing education administrators / teachers who have developed each pilot. They will share their experiences of successes and challenges to date as the initiatives have been implemented.

There are so many ways to use technology - and technology is always changing quickly, so it can feel very overwhelming! In this session we will share a framework that will help you assess your technology in different areas. You will also get a template to create a basic technology plan to help you prioritize your technology projects. By taking the time to assess and plan your technology, you can ensure you spend your (limited!) time on the areas which are the most important and will have the biggest impact.

This presentation will focus on the HOW of Curriculum Framework implementation and the facilitating role support instructors play when it comes to ensuring accountability on the part of learners, instructors, and administrators. We will give a short description ofhow and why we developed the NCDSB Curriculum Framework, as well as talk aboutthe challenges that ESL Education currently faces. Some emphasis will be given to our piloting of Writing Portfolios in the classroom as we attempt to prepare our Instructors and Learners for the coming trend of task based Assessment.

This thought-provoking workshop will model and put into action Bob Wiele’s keynote address about collaboration. Using a highly engaging methodology that can be applied quickly and easily in any classroom, we will model how you can transform a standard lesson to truly engage all students in the class. We will also demonstrate how, by understanding their own thinking strengths, students are able to better understand their important contributions to group work leading to successful outcomes.

SESSION 205Opportunities & Challenges in Developing Work-based Language Learning Programs: Exploring the SLT Initiative Using Case StudiesChristine Pinsent-Johnson, Adult Education Researcher, CESBAAudience: ESL/FSL

Findings from CESBA’s recently completed Specialized Language Training case study project will be shared. Participants will be able to discuss the findings and ask further questions about the research process. The discussion will inform the development of the study’s recommendations for the SLT initiative, and broader issues related to work-based language pedagogy and program development.

SESSION 206Creating a Better Job Seeker: Leveraging Technology for Youth EmploymentMadelaine Currelly, CEO, The Community Training and Development CentreAudience: Credit, Managers, Principals, Community, LBS

This session will provide an overview of a large study, using gender based analysis, identified significant differences between males and females looking for employment. Minister Hoskins, the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment has suggested a need for youth to learn and manage their job search using a more strategic approach. Thedeliverables and outcomes of this economic study includes training and virtual coaching in a strategic web based job search learning and management tool, and job search training videos.




SESSION 207Making Meaningful Connections and Building Rapport in an Online CourseChris Delisle, Department Head & Sabina McLarty, e-Learning Teacher, Loyola School of Adult and Continuing EducationAudience: Credit

Students need support in online courses. Online courses traditionally are very text heavy and can be difficult to navigate. We will show ways to reorganize courses to make them more student friendly, and demonstrate easy ways to create and embed videos into your course so students can make more connections with their online teachers. We will also show how easy it is to use SNAGIT and SmartNotebook to annotate student work and provide rich engaging feedback to students. Additionally, we will create a Wiki with many instructional videos to help teachers engage their students.

SESSION 209Using a Hybrid Delivery Model to Improve Student Achievement (Part I)Jonathan Brown, Education Officer, Ministry of EducationAudience: Credit, Principals, Managers of A&CE credit programs

The focus of this two-part workshop is on using a hybrid delivery model to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Part 1 will focus on Growing Success and how to unpack curriculum expectations into learning goals within a modularized course. Part II will be a panel presentation by adult and continuing education teachers who developed a course redesign framework using the provincial Course Writing Software. They will share their experience and evidence to date of what works and what doesn’t work as they implement their redesigned courses using Desire2Learn, an electronic gradebook and other digital resources.



SESSION 301Career Planning Resources to Support Adult Pathway PlanningKaren Sklash, Sklash Consulting Services, Inc. Audience: Credit, Principals and Teachers

This workshop will demonstrate the use of different career planning resources that are currently being used in Adult and Continuing Education classrooms and programs. Discussion will occur on the types of resources and activities that are required to support the implementation of the Pathways to Success policy document in Adult and Continuing Education.

SESSION 302 PLAR for Mature Students: Quebec EquivalenciesLucie Cayouette, ConsultantAudience: Credit, Managers, Principles, Guidance Workers

Are all those different Quebec transcripts and diplomas driving you nuts? This workshop will present an overview of the Quebec Education System and will explain and provide examples of different transcripts and diplomas. A flowchart outlining the process for completing a Quebec PLAR for mature students’ equivalencies will be presented.

The focus of this two-part workshop is on using a hybrid delivery model to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Part 1 will focus on Growing Success and how to unpack curriculum expectations into learning goals within a modularized course. Part II will be a panel presentation by adult and continuing education teachers who developed a course redesign framework using the provincial Course Writing Software. They will share their experience and evidence to date of what works and what doesn’t work as they implement their redesigned courses using Desire2Learn, an electronic gradebook and other digital resources.

The workshop will be useful to anyone considering adding technology to their classroom, using freely available internet resources, and examples from the Ventures program, a widely used adult ESL program correlated to the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
