INTRODUCTION

Welcome to CESBA’s 2013 Fall Conference, taking place December 4-6, 2013 (December 4th is the pre-conference) at the Courtyard Marriott Downtown Toronto. This program provides an overview of the conference. Session rooms, the hotel map and more information will be provided in a printed program at the conference. This program is subject to change without notice.

MINISTER OF CITIZENSHIP & IMMIGRATION

Honourable Michael Coteau, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration

Michael Coteau was elected to the legislature in 2011 as the MPP for Don Valley East. He was appointed Minister of Citizenship and Immigration in February, 2013. Prior to

entering government, Coteau served as a school board trustee for almost eight years.

As a trustee, Coteau worked to make schools more accessible to community groups that run after-school programs for children. He also served as the Vice-Chair of the Toronto District School Board and helped to bring forward nutritional changes that increased awareness of student hunger, and resulted in healthy food programs. In

addition, he is a champion of the integration of technology in education.

Coteau is a former CEO and Executive Director of a national literacy not-for-profit, AlphaPlus. He was also a member of the board of the Toronto Foundation for Student

Success, and the board of the Toronto Land Corporation.

Technology in education: A key ingredient for academic success

Sandra is responsible for all aspects of the Information Communication Technology Council’s (ICTC) talent and diversity initiatives, collaborating with businesses, HR and talent partners on strategies and actions to leverage the talent of today and tomorrow in Canada’s digital economy.

As a champion in the promotion and development of diversity and inclusion programs across Canada and globally, Sandra has particularly focused on initiatives that involve the recruitment, retention, integration and advancement of women, global talent, Aboriginal peoples, and youth in ICT.

This presentation will outline findings from MCI-funded research examining the feasibility of e-learning in Ontario’s Adult, Non-Credit ESL Programs. Key benefits, challenges and visions of ESL e-learning as a learner-centred pathway will be discussed. Effective ESL e-learning practices will be highlighted.

SESSION 102Making SLT Curriculum Materials Look Good in TutelaTrudy Kennell, Consultant Audience: ESL/FSL

This workshop will cover some basics about getting curriculum materials ready to post in Tutela. It will include best practices for publishing curriculum materials, either in print or online. You’ll work with a template that identifies the essentials that ensure readers can find and make the most of your curriculum.

This workshop will provide resources and the opportunity for discussion on strategies that will assist principals in the development of School Improvement Plans that support the Board Improvement Plans. Effective strategies for completing School Improvement Plans need assessments specifically will be addressed. A panel of principals will share their experiences in creating School Improvement Plans.

There are currently two useful iPad apps for Desire2Learn users:- Desire2Learn Assignment Grader provides quick and easy access to assignments allowing you to assess using rubrics, annotate with online comments, and provide personalized text, audio or video feedback.

- The Binder App allows learners to easily pull instructor posted lecture notes and learning resources from the Desire2Learn Learning Environment directly into the Binder app to work with - online or offline – learners can then annotate and mark-up these notes for future reference

During the session we will explore these two apps and discuss possible uses.

e-Learning continues to expand across the province as an alternate platform through which an increasing number of students are taking courses and earning credits. This workshop will explore ways in which eLearning can augment/support/enhance credit programs through Alternative Education, Summer School, and other credit programs. Participants will be introduced to the Desire2Learn (D2L) platform and the resources available within it, and explore ways in which those resources can be utilized to enrich current credit programs and develop new ones.

The OECD recently released findings from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), a new international study of adult literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills. In this session, we will discuss PIAAC results in Ontario, how LBS programs can start thinking about what these workforce changes mean and how we can better assist learners in developing the skills that will help them succeed in obtaining work and progressing in the workplace.
