TRANSCRIPT
I t is hard to believe we have completed the 1st quarter of the school year. From the excitement of the start of a new school year with our largest enrollment ever, to the trepidation of the 1st quarter report cards, we
have had an outstanding school year. We have been witness to the positive leadership of the senior class and the continual development of our Catholic identity as a school. We have many opportunities to express our Catholic identity in October: Pro-Life Rosary on October 1st; First Friday Adoration on October 2nd; Renewal Night in the Chapel on October 7th; Reconciliation October 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th; Liturgies on October 9th (Homecoming), 15th, 22nd, and 29th; Freshmen Retreat on October 23rd. We invite parents to share these experiences with your children. Teurlings Catholic will be on Fall Break October 12th-13th, and the students are excited about not having classes those days. On Tuesday, October 13th, we have scheduled Parent / Teacher Conference Day. Teachers will be on campus from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. in their classrooms to meet with parents concerning student progress. This is an important opportunity to establish communication with your children’s teachers. Many of you will be confronted with serious decisions regarding moral and ethical behaviors as plans for Homecoming 2015 take shape. What peer pressure dictates and what is proper ethical behavior are not always the same. We have concerns about the usage and/or possession of alcohol by minors, and all students will be breathalyzed to gain entrance into the Homecoming dance. We have concerns about adults purchasing and supplying alcohol to minors. We have concerns about provocative and degenerate styles of dancing and attire. We expect the highest of standards of conduct for our students and will work hard to ensure they know our levels of expectation. Dress should be modest and tasteful, bodies should be chemical free, and dancing should be wholesome and appropriate. The Student Council Executive Committee has worked hard in planning a week’s worth of events for Homecoming. Our students will participate in daily activities, our Homecoming liturgy will have the participation of alumni, the pep rally should be spirited, and the game will be exciting. I hope you will witness the enthusiasm and energy a homecoming brings to a school community. Whether you recently graduated or are a seasoned veteran, you are a Rebel. Once a Rebel, always a Rebel!

2015 Student Homecoming Information: Homecoming activities culminate with the traditional Homecoming Dance which this
year is Saturday, October 10th, from 8:30-11:00pm at the Dupuis Center, 1212 E Pont Des Mouton Road.
Making certain that our male and female students show up with the proper attire doesn’t
have to be as stressful as students/parents perceive it to be. Below you will find the 2015-16 Dance Attire guideline which is also located on page 43 of the 2015-16 Student/Parent Handbook. Please refer to these guidelines when getting your son/daughter their
special outfit. Should you have any questions please contact: Mrs. Marty Heintz at [email protected] or 235.5711, ext. 103. If in doubt, please send pics to Mrs. Heintz
of the front and back of the dress in question.
Male students who have non-TCH dates need to make sure they relay these guidelines to their prospective dates in time for them to get the proper attire as well.
DANCE ATTIRE GUIDELINES
Teurlings Catholic High School sets forth the following dress guidelines for our students and their dates:
Girls TOPS
• The neckline of a dress, top, or gown must be cut in a modest way. If cleavage is showing, the student will be asked to leave the dance. Spaghetti straps or strapless dresses are allowed, as long as they are not low cut.
• The cut of a dress in the back and sides must not be below the natural bra line. Backless dresses are not allowed. LENGTH
• A dress, skirt, or gown, must be no shorter than three (3) inches from the knee.
• Slits in a dress/skirt may be no higher than three (3) inches from the knee. MISCELLANEOUS
• No midriff is allowed to show.
• No navel is allowed to show.
• The bodice of the dress must not have any fabric cutouts (this includes openings covered with net-like fabric.
• Dresses should not be excessively tight.

ACADEMICS
First Quarter Report Cards, Parent/Teacher Conferences and
Standardized Testing Whew! That one line above is an important one, because so much of your student’s success depends, in part, on all three October events, regardless of the student’s grade level and past academic success. While the connection may seem obvious in some cases (i.e. a parent needs to see the teacher if the student is not doing well in class), there is much more to the events than you may think. First Quarter Report Cards will be official on Friday, October 9th, the day of Parent/Teacher Conferences. Grades aside for now, the ramifications in the classroom as we approach the end of the First Quarter rarely are addressed, so here goes:
• It takes time for a teacher to start the year off academically. With the exception of summer reading, a diagnostic essay or a math review test, no teacher can test until the students have received instruction in material to test. Students also need enough point opportunities, however, to be able to demonstrate mastery of material within an academic quarter. Realistically, the teacher also needs enough test points to allow a student who does poorly on one test to balance that grade against others where the student was able to show success. Normally, we ask teachers to include 4-5 major tests or comparable assignments (timed writing, research project) per quarter. In the First Quarter, we know that is often not possible, so the student’s possible points are often smaller that quarter than the rest of the year. As a result, the norm the First Quarter is 3-4, rather than 4-5, major assignments.
• If you go back and look at your student’s grades in RenWeb for the First Quarter, you will no doubt see that a major test was not given until the third or possibly even the fourth week of school. If the teacher was able to give a second major test in the fifth or sixth week, then the last major test of the First Quarter will fall in the last week of the quarter, allowing the teacher just enough time to test and grade before grades are due.
• Why am I telling you this? First Quarter grades are due on Tuesday, October 6 (to allow time for grades to be processed and checked) and you can expect your student to have multiple tests either at the end of the previous week or on that Monday. Multiple tests – I am emphasizing that fact. I should also note that the week grades are due just happens to be Homecoming Week, so there will be activities your student that may, in typical teen fashion, concern your student more than academics. The wise student (and if yours is not such a student, Mom and Dad, you may have to do this for the student) look at the teacher’s RenWeb/GoogleClassroom/classroom board and note the upcoming tests, papers and major assignments and will plan ahead, knowing that he or she cannot master multiple subjects worth of work in one night before tests. The important word here? PLAN!
So, with that information in hand, you now know how to help your student plan for that last week of the First Quarter. Let’s move on to Parent/Teacher Conferences.
• Is it required that you attend on conference day? No, of course not, especially if your student has a good grade and you have no concerns.
• However, if your student is not achieving at the level you know the student is capable of, then you should meet with the teacher or teachers.
• Realistically, is every student on our campus going to make an A in every class? No. Is there anything wrong with a B or C if the student is working at potential or the class is really hard (chemistry and math come to mind here)? No. Are some of our students going to get an occasional D in a really hard class? Yes.
• There is a problem if your student is not completing assignments and you need to discuss that with the teacher. How do you know if homework is not being completed? Check RenWeb.
• If the teacher asks for a conference on the report card comment line, then the parent should follow up.
• There may also be a problem if the student faithfully does all homework (no help or copying), pays attention in class, takes notes, reviews notes every night and not just on the night before the test, and studies and still struggles to pass the test. That scenario should also send the parent to the teacher for a conference.
I always say, if in doubt, meet with the teacher.
STANDARDIZED TESTING MONTH
Finally, October is standardized testing month for many of our students at TCHS. On Wednesday, October 14th, all freshmen will take the computer-based version of the Aspire Test. The same day, all sophomores will take the paper and pencil version of the PACT (a practice ACT) Test. Still on the same day, juniors may opt to take the PSAT/National Merit Qualifying Test.
What do we need from parents for that potentially stressful day for students, teachers, and administrators alike?
• First, make sure students are here on time and ready to test, well-rested, and having eaten a decent breakfast.
• Second, emphasize to the student that it is to their advantage to take the testing seriously and do the best the student can do. We use the results of the Aspire to determine the effectiveness of our curriculum, so the testing is important on a school level. For the individual student, the Aspire score is the score used to determine if a student may take honors or dual enrollment classes. While the PACT results are not an official ACT, that test will indicate the weaknesses that can be remediated before the student takes the real test in spring of the junior year.
Freshmen will practice taking the online test the week of October 5th-9th in their English, math, science, and social studies classes.

written on the memo blank of your check. If you can assist, please contact Mrs. Aline Norwood in the Development Office at [email protected] or 235-5711 Ext. 105.
Ms. Marie Champagne (English) needs a new white board for her classroom . Mrs. Ramey Badeaux (Campus Minister) is looking for a new portable speaker sound system for campus ministry. She needs a more powerful one (for the larger crowds/bigger classes, etc). The one she would like is the Anchor Go Getter Basic Package (portable speaker, stand, microphone and blue tooth capabilities). Cost is $995. If you have a lamp at home that still works for lighting, but you no longer use, please consider donating it to Mrs. Carrieanne Ledet (English) for her classroom Used or new, the lamps would certainly be appreciated. The TCH Wrestling Team has earned four state championships (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015), a record that is unprecedented. Coach Kent Masson would like to commemorate the many wrestlers who brought the wins to TCH by placing a 4 x 8 aluminum sign panel with each year’s winning team picture on the multi-purpose building. Cost is $479.00.
