1 Newsletter No. 4 - Term 1 Week 5 28 February 2019 FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Just 5 weeks ago we welcomed you to Kalinda for 2019. Some of you were bringing your children for the first time ever and some were preparing for their last year of Primary School. Lots of emotions and a touch of nerves all around… can you believe how far we have already come! My favourite part of the day is visiting classrooms and seeing lots of happy smiles and kind voices. Students and teachers have been working incredibly hard and the learning in classrooms is evidence of a great team! Today my day was made by the secret whisper and giant smile of a little person who had their very first icy pole money tucked carefully in their pocket. I just know that lunchtime today will be remembered for a long time! At school we talk a lot about academic learning but the social and emotional growth of our students (and ourselves!) is just as important. Little routines, special treats, jokes and moments all build positive experiences about school. A positive experience at school leads to minds that are open to learning! This week the staff spent 2 hours after school on Tuesday in a workshop around the concept of Mindful Self Compassion. A quote that stuck in our minds is this one Self-compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate ourselves with kindness and forgive ourselves when needed”. It was a great opportunity to think about how this concept relates to the resilience and self-respect that we talk to our students about all the time. Thanks to our Wellbeing Leaders Mel Tattersall and Bron Steele, who organised this opportunity for staff. Our Family Open Afternoon last Thursday was a huge success and the school was really buzzing! Our Highland Dancers opened the afternoon with a spectacular performance under the beautiful gum trees, followed by open classrooms where in every room there were parents and children sharing learning and getting to know this year’s teacher. It was so fabulous to see many of our children encouraging their parents and siblings to join in on new maths games and challenges. Out in the courtyard we had some of our very talented musicians serenading the crowd. When classrooms closed, we moved to the oval to take part in the Family Games organised by Miss Swingler. Tunnel ball in particular was very popular, with lots of parents and teachers showing their competitive streak!

Newsletter No. 4 - Term 1 – Week 5 28 February 2019

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Just 5 weeks ago we welcomed you to Kalinda for 2019. Some of you were bringing your children

for the first time ever and some were preparing for their last year of Primary School. Lots of

emotions and a touch of nerves all around… can you believe how far we have already come! My

favourite part of the day is visiting classrooms and seeing lots of happy smiles and kind voices.

Students and teachers have been working incredibly hard and the learning in classrooms is evidence

of a great team! Today my day was made by the secret whisper and giant smile of a little person

who had their very first icy pole money tucked carefully in their pocket. I just know that lunchtime

today will be remembered for a long time!

At school we talk a lot about academic learning but the social and emotional growth of our students

(and ourselves!) is just as important. Little routines, special treats, jokes and moments all build

positive experiences about school. A positive experience at school leads to minds that are open to

learning! This week the staff spent 2 hours after school on Tuesday in a workshop around the

concept of Mindful Self Compassion. A quote that stuck in our minds is this one “Self-compassion

provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, motivate

ourselves with kindness and forgive ourselves when needed”. It was a great opportunity to think

about how this concept relates to the resilience and self-respect that we talk to our students about all

the time. Thanks to our Wellbeing Leaders Mel Tattersall and Bron Steele, who organised this

opportunity for staff.

Our Family Open Afternoon last Thursday was a huge success and the school was really buzzing!

Our Highland Dancers opened the afternoon with a spectacular performance under the beautiful

gum trees, followed by open classrooms where in every room there were parents and children

sharing learning and getting to know this year’s teacher. It was so fabulous to see many of our

children encouraging their parents and siblings to join in on new maths games and challenges.

Out in the courtyard we had some of our very talented musicians serenading

the crowd. When classrooms closed, we moved to the oval to take part in

the Family Games organised by Miss Swingler. Tunnel ball in particular

was very popular, with lots of parents and teachers showing their

competitive streak!

Thank you so much to our amazing P&F team who kept up

with the hungry hordes (including an emergency dash for

more sausages!), Cheryl and her dancers, Sarah Butler and

the musicians, Jess Swingler and the team and all our

fabulous teachers. We look forward to continuing this new

tradition into the future.

A FEW REMINDERS

STUDENTS UNATTENDED IN THE YARD There have been times recently when students have been brought or sent to school early and have been unattended in the yard. Please remember that, with the exception of planned clubs and rehearsals, the students are not supervised by staff until 8.45am.

It is not appropriate for students to be left unattended until 8.45AM. If you need to leave your child at school sooner than 8.45am, OSHClub can provide this service. School Leadership Team 2019

If you’ve been lucky enough to attend assembly recently, you will have noticed how excited and enthusiastic our 2019 School Leaders are! Olive, Thiyara, Hudson and Jack, have worked hard to encourage others to embody our new school values of Kindness, Resilience and Respect, and have kept us all thoroughly entertained with their recent segments during school assembly. With so many fantastic opportunities on offer at Kalinda, we rely heavily on the input and initiative of many of our senior students and we’re very lucky to have such an inspiring team of young leaders to bolster the 2019 Student Leadership Team. Last week, candidates from Chisolm, Melba, McCubbin and Parkes presented speeches to the Grade 3-6 students from their respective houses and were elected by their peers. There were some truly inspiring speeches and many students stepped out of their comfort zones to put themselves forward for consideration. Each house is represented by two House Captains and two Vice House Captains.

Congratulations to the following students:

Chisholm House Captains: Vice House Captains: Cherry-May C & Hayden McE Charlotte O & Josh T

Melba House Captains: Vice House Captains: Ella B & Harrison S Isabelle W & Jack C

McCubbin House Captains: Vice House Captains: Georgie C & Aaron R Alex S & Tyler E

Parkes House Captains: Vice House Captains: Sophie C & Seb H Olivia H & Benjamin E We will be presenting the leadership badges to our School Leaders and House Captains at assembly on Friday 1st March at 3:00pm.
