From the Board

i was fortunate to go on the 2015 FacetoFace Bus trip with my daugh-ter, Courtney, as a Chaperone. Little did i know what i was in for.

i grew up in a Catholic home. We went to church on Sundays, i attended Catholic school, and as far as i un-derstood, this was what being Catho-lic was. then, at age 40, i went on the most memorable and amazing trip

which brought me to a place in my faith which has changed my life forever.

On the first days on the bus it was overwhelming - a bus full of teenagers who seemed so ahead of me in so many ways in their faith journey and were so joyful! i didn’t feel like i belonged, and i was scared. Here i was the adult, the mom, the chaperone, and i had no idea what i was doing. By the grace of God, i found so much support in the other chaperones, and Father Matthew, and decided to believe that this is where God wanted me, and this is right where He had called me to be.

the Steubenville Conference blew me away. it was the most moving, and inspiring place i have ever been. Be-tween the speakers and the music, you could feel the Holy Spirit moving. i could not get enough. Celebrating mass with thousands of people, coming before the Blessed Sac-rament on bended knee, offering it all to Him; it was all so real. i experienced the gift of tears and the grace of God and His forgiveness.

I experienced true joy for the first time in my life! i experienced inner peace - something that i didn’t even know was possible. My soul was freaking out! i had been Catholic all of my life, but i didn’t know how many riches the faith has to offer me. the Holy Spirit set a fire inside of me, and i began to experience personal prayer, and a real relationship with Jesus! i cherished the time i had reading, praying, and sitting in quiet with Him. I am so accepted - accepted by God, never mind anyone else. God! Wow! i wish i would have known this in my teens; i wish i would have listened to His voice. Better late than never… Here i am Lord!

i am so thankful for the Bus trip. i am thankful to the kids who showed me what community is - what living your faith looks like. i pray for each of you. i am so proud of you, and i thank you for letting Jesus’ love shine through you. Don’t ever stop.

True JOYFacetoFace NewsfamIlY lIfe conference 2015FacetoFace was privileged for the second year in a row to be asked to lead a youth tent at the Family Life Conference from July 1-5, 2015. this year we helped lead 9 youth sessions focused around the conference theme, “Be not afraid.”

Bus trIp 2015 & 2016the 2015 Bus trip was another huge success. Both youth and leaders were tremendously blessed. Read more about the Bus Trip in the article to the right and on page 5.

IgnIte 2015 summer camps FacetoFace Ministries was blessed with the opportunity for the first time ever to lead three ignite Camps this summer: ignite Saskatchewan, ignite Alberta, and ignite British Columbia! each week was incredible in its own way, filled with God’s grace and joy.

the ignite theme was “Overflowing,” based on romans 15:13. Participants were invited to trust in God’s love for them, receive His grace, and be filled to overflowing by the power of the Holy Spirit.

ignite Saskatchewan and Alberta were blessed weeks as the youth responded beautifully to the invitations of God’s love and mercy. ignite BC was an incredible in-augural year; we were blown away by the immediate openness of the participants and amount of conversion.

this summer the ignite core team and myself had the tremendous op-portunity to travel the 1200 kms of prairies, valleys, and mountains to the beautiful Diocese of Prince George. We were greeted by the warm smiles of the dedicated local diocesan priests, volunteers, cooks, and coordinators at Camp Morice (close to Fort St. John, BC) to host the first ever ignite BC camp.

People always ask me – which is your favorite ignite? And i always giggle to myself because it is nearly impossible to answer. every time we host ignite i am blown away by the men and women whom God calls to the camp… and as a result each camp is entirely unique! And ignite BC was no exception. the beauty

of that province AnD (more impor-tantly) the people that are there con-stantly reminded me of the powerful presence of God.

We spent the week of ignite BC learning how to grow in our personal relationship with God so that we can live a life of overflowing peace, hope, and joy. it took some breaking down of walls as we were all in new territo-ry, some of us geographical, some of us spiritual. But eventually, through grace, we all grew as individuals and as a community of believers. We all left the week with full hearts, great memories, new songs, and cherished friendships.

thank you so much to everyone who has helped to make the ignite camps

possible. thank you to the dedicated servants of the Diocese of Prince George and the entire ignite team. thank you to the incredible, joyful youth who came and joined us; you all were so courageous, and you in-spire me! thank you to God, for giv-ing us innumerable opportunities to live a life of overflowing goodness, truth, and beauty.

Being that the Lord has transformed the lives of many youth through the FacetoFace ignite Camps, many have been asking if they can continue par-ticipating after they have graduated. this summer’s ignite saw a new ad-dition of the Junior team, which met the desires of many.

the Junior team is unique be-cause of their blend as both a team member and participant. they had

the opportunity to lead grace be-fore meals, engaging other youth in games and after meal entertainment. By being fully present during all of the sessions and being led in their own small group, they continued to have the opportunity to be fed on their faith journey.

it was a true blessing to lead these young desiring souls, and to witness to the fruit which the Lord provided.

they had a great desire to serve, learn and be truly encouraged and challenged to grow on their spiritual journey. this expansion will make available to these young adults the tools they need within their journey as they move forward in life, whether it be university, college, work, etc. We look forward to seeing where the Lord leads this new opportunity.

Ignite SK: Junior Team Expansion

Ignite Junior Team TestimonyMy name is Caitlyn Anhorn and i am 18 years old. i first heard of ignite when my friends told me i had to come because it was “the best thing ever!” i wasn’t sure at first about going, not knowing what to expect, but i loved it so much that i returned another four years after that.

this past year, i was blessed with the chance of being part of the first ever Junior team at ignite SK. the mem-bers of the team got to be participants, but also with a bit of a leadership role. i am so happy i got to be part of my own small group, where we discussed

things at a deeper level, so much so that we were often late for the next scheduled event. On the other hand, i am happy that i got to help out with a small group of girls that were new to ignite because i got to know them as friends, not just other participants.

i also felt the presence of the Lord during many talks, eucharistic Adoration, praise and worship, Mass, prayer ministry, and through other people’s experiences. i really enjoyed this year’s talks, as they hit topics that

were deep and sometimes misunder-stood. Acting in a leadership role with the Junior team, has, and will con-tinue helping me, as it has opened doors to new friendships. it will hope-fully also help ease the possibilities to share my faith with those around me

after having the experience of doing it a little bit at ig-nite. Since ignite, i have tried to keep up on more Scripture reading and per-sonal prayer, and i con-tinually have to try to keep doing this as time goes on.

Bus tripYoung andfaithful

the Lord is at work in our young peo-ple! Anytime i have worked in youth ministry i am always in awe of the ways in which Christ is working in and through youth. i am often challenged by their humility, depth and honesty. Leading the FacetoFace Bus trip is such a beautiful gift. i see so many young people live out the following verse with such a great desire to hon-our Christ with their lives:

“Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.’’ 1 Timothy 4:12

this year on the bus trip it became apparent to my heart just how many youth feel alone or judged in their walk of faith. i too felt this as a teen

and often think about what would need to happen in order for young people to feel more at home in our parishes. Do we speak to them as we would a fellow adult? Do we strive to have deep and meaningful faith conversations with the youth in our community? these beautiful young people desire to be known and loved. near the end of the trip a young man approached me on the bus asking if we could sit together on the bus to have a one on one conversation. He said he was about to get off the bus and that he realized he hadn’t had a chance to speak with me before the current moment. i was touched, because here was a young person who felt comfortable in a beautiful community atmosphere and who de-

cided to reach out to me. When i see teens reaching out, this tells me that the community we build on this trip is blessed.

Many teens voice to me that they feel totally comfortable to be themselves on the bus trip. i believe that this is be-cause there is an atmosphere of trust and care and that the love of Christ is present. Some talk about their strug-gles, while others cherish every mo-ment with others who believe as they do. i see Christ so deeply in these beautiful young souls who love Him. May we all strive to see the depth in our youth, to receive them wherever they are at and walk with them towards Christ from there.

Since the first youth retreat in 1999, FacetoFace Ministries has been blessed by many individuals who gave their time and talents to help proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ. the greatest of these people is our founder Ken Yasinski. His initial yes and ongoing service throughout the years has changed countless lives.

Since following God’s leading in July 2014 to become a full time speaker outside of FacetoFace Ministries, Ken continues to serve the Church by focusing the majority of his time on communicating the practical life-changing message of the gospel, rooted in the fullness of the Cath-olic faith.

Ken accomplishes this by:

1. Leading 3-day eucharistic-focused parish mis-sions, locally and across north America. the

3-day mission is designed to challenge participants to strive for their full potential in life: to be a saint. each evening makes relevant and practical the truths of the Catholic faith. the content of the presentations focuses on every day lived spirituality, not theoretical theology. A key aspect of Ken’s missions is the incorporation of musi-cal eucharistic Adoration. So each evening participants hear about Jesus, then encounter Jesus.

2. Producing CatholicMinute, free bite-sized faith for-mation videos found on www.catholicspeaker.com

and Youtube.

3. Producing evangelization resources. Ken is cur-rently working on a DVD project consisting of 6

lessons designed to be a tool for evangelization. each lesson is 20 minutes long and has a work book and leader’s guide. it will be ideal for small group faith studies in a parish or people’s homes. release date is scheduled for Lent, 2016.

4. Speaking at Catholic conferences, retreats, teacher spiritual development days, and more.

FacetoFace prays God’s blessing upon Ken as he contin-ues to serve the Church. to keep updated with his speak-ing apostolate, or to invite Ken to your parish, please visit www.catholicspeaker.com

- - -FacetoFace Ministries would also like to thank Ken for his many years of hard work and sacrifice as he founded and helped make Faceto-Face Ministries the beautiful Catholic evangelistic youth focused ministry we all know today. His gift to clearly proclaim the fullness of our faith and invite a response to God’s grace, along with his joy, laughter, and ser-vant heart will always be re-membered. thanks Ken!

Lauryn Marchand, Ignite BC Participant

What really blessed me from ig-nite, was the gift of forgiveness. For me, being a typical 15 year old girl, i definitely liked boys and dating. i’m not saying love is bad, but if you decide to date, bring Christ with you on your journey. i didn’t do that so easily; i got off track from God and a little too close to the guys i dated. that brought me away from God, so depression started to come back into my life. So easily i slipped away and didn’t realize it. i just thought, i’m a good Catholic girl, i go to church and i pray every-day. i thought i was good. But really, you have to mean it; you can’t just ask for stuff, you need to have that strong connection with God.

i realized at ignite i needed that relationship. All those nights cry-ing, all i needed to do was ask Christ for forgiveness and have a conversation with him, and tell him what He really means to me and how i love him.

God cures depression; Christ can do all. the one thing that i will never forget about ignite was af-ter going to confession, i had the feeling of God’s overflowing love in me and the desire to share my love with everyone there. My life will be forever changed from that confession; i will always remem-ber it. Christ will forgive all, but i needed to ask Him.

Presley Bonnar, Ignite Alberta Participant

God did something so powerful to me at ignite Alberta. i had never been interested in camp, but the poster at our church stood out to me and all of a sudden i felt like i wanted to go.

During Mass on thursday at ignite, the priest used an analogy about the possibility of dying. My mind drifted away from the homily and i started praying and crying softly. i prayed that if someone did die that their families would be comforted and cared for. i then drifted into thoughts of how i could avoid this. However, the more i thought of ways to not die the more i realized that i can’t run or hide from God; be-sides, i want to be with Him in heaven which means dying first. So instead of continuing my list of survival plans i made God a promise. i told Him i would live the life He wants me to and i would deepen my faith and love for Him every day. i made my lifelong commitment to my Lord.

Afterwards, when i received the Body of Jesus i looked into the priest’s eyes and saw love and kindness, just like Jesus. At the end of Mass he came up to the front and said, “i apologize if i have worried or scared anyone, i was using the analogy to explain the signifi-cance of time.” My heart lifted up to God. He had used the analogy to “test” my strength in Him and guide me to the promise i made.

i now devote time to God every day. Some days when it almost slips by me i realize all the times throughout the day He gave to me to use for prayer - whether it’s doing dishes, driving to school, or walking to my next class. those are my special times with Jesus. Slowly they add up throughout the day and at the end of my day i feel much better and know that i am growing in my faith.

it was truly an inspirational week of personal growth and conversation with Jesus. i have been filled with the Holy Spirit and hope to pass on this love to others around me. My heart has been ignited with God’s love.

thinking of ignite SK 2015 brings back so many good memories! this past year was my first experience attending an ignite camp and i could barely believe what had happened to my life over that one week. My older sisters attended FacetoFace events often when i was growing up. i never understood what they were saying or why they were so happy; now i do! the speakers were fantastic, and intriguing to lis-ten to. the fellowship was unfor-gettable as well! everyone was so open and welcoming to others and they brought me out of my shell!

Before attending ignite in Bruno, SK at St. therese, i was injured in both of my knees which led to borrowing crutches from the school. We received the gift of prayer min-istry on the third day at ignite. Dur-ing that time of prayer ministry the two team members prayed for my knees and that God would heal them. that night during Adoration i received the beautiful gift of heal-ing. there are no words for the pain that was occurring while the Holy Spirit healed me, but i would gladly do it again for Him the way He did for me! Since then i’ve been back at sports and my knees have been the least of my problems! i have continued friendships that started at ignite and i cannot wait to see them all again. if anyone is considering going in the future i would definitely encourage them to attend!

Testimony by: khrystia Mackinnon

this summer, i made the decision to go to ignite Alberta for the first time. i was excited to go, having heard rave reviews from others. As the date for camp drew nearer, however, i be-came apprehensive. i wanted to stay home and hang out with my friends and go to parties rather than go to a Catholic youth camp, where i’d be totally cut off from the rest of my life. Despite my apprehension, i decided to go.

i had an awesome experience at camp. i had God speak to me, some-thing which i’d never really experi-enced before. tuesday evening we had prayer ministry. i didn’t really know what to expect, but went into it thinking it would be a nice time to pray with a couple of team members. i sat down, told them my prayer in-tentions, and the team members put their hands on my shoulders as we began to pray. Suddenly, one of the team members said, “Khrystia, i don’t know if this applies to you at all, but i just really feel God saying to you that you’re a beautiful human being. And not just on the inside, but you’re phys-ically stunning as well. And i also feel compelled to tell you that you bring God’s joy with you everywhere you go.” the other team member agreed

and they both kept praying about what a beautiful person i am. this really struck me and i began to cry be-cause nothing i’d said in my intentions would have suggested to them i needed to hear that. Outwardly, i’m a pretty confident person, after all. i’ve just always struggled to see myself as pretty. i’ve always liked who i am as a person, but not the way i look. But, when the team members started tell-ing me that God specifically wanted me to know i was beautiful, i realized that liking yourself and liking how you look are directly related. God spoke to me through two other people, but i know it was Him. And, armed with the knowledge that God loved me and thought i was beautiful, i went into adoration excited for the eucharist to come. Once He did, i couldn’t keep

my eyes off Him. this was the sec-ond night of adoration. On the first, i hadn’t been able to look at the eu-charist once, but this time, i couldn’t look away. i finally felt worthy to be there in God’s presence, knowing that i was His daughter and i was loved. i just stared and stared at the eucharist and experienced true joy.

i was so happy i started to laugh and couldn’t control myself. i tried to stop, feeling that laughing was inap-propriate at such a sacred time, but couldn’t stop. the laughing even con-tinued after adoration, going on for at least another half hour. this spiritual high in which i knew God has creat-ed me beautifully and communicated with me personally was the happiest i’ve ever felt. nothing else matters, except that i am loved. i will always remember this night, and the certainty it brought me. God loves me. And if God loves me, who am i not to love myself?

Marriage is the seed of that which is the most important of human institu-tions − namely, the family. Happy, healthy marriages lead to happy, healthy families. Happy, healthy fam-ilies lead to a happy, healthy society. Clearly marriage matters; and the topic of matrimony is at the forefront of our today’s societal dialogue (right where it should be). But what exactly is a marriage? For until this question is answered, productive dialogue on the topic will not be possible.

1.MaRRIaGE IS a CoMPREhEN-SIvE UNIoN oF PERSoNS;

that is, a total union of whole persons uniting both the physical and the spiritual. Marriage therefore naturally results in spouses “putting their heads together” as well as their bodies. By virtue of this compre-hensive union the husband and wife work as one organic unit to think, choose and act towards common purposes, the foremost of which is

the building of a family which both sustains humanity and provides a fertile environ-ment for the education of children – so-ciety’s future. For a society

goes as its children go.the union between spouses (com-prehensive) is unique from all other two-person unions (non-comprehen-sive) because it includes total bodily union. this union of bodies – fertility and all – can result naturally in a completely new and separate human being. thus the purpose of sex is life: new life conceived in the womb and new life conceived in the rela-tionship between husband and wife; or as Dr. Janet Smith says, babies and bonding. Marriage between one man and one woman is by its nature life-giving, ordered towards the rais-ing of children and the good of the spouses.

2. MaRRIaGE IS ExCLUSIvE, and therefore, must involve two

people. You cannot give all of your money to Jim, and at the same time give all of your money to John. You must choose one person. the same principle applies to marriage. thus total self-gift is only possible in a two-person marriage.

3. MaRRIaGE IS PERMaNENT. G.K. Chesterton remarked that

“marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should decline.” Marriage a duel? And to the death? Yes and yes! Marriage is hard because we are often more interested in doing “my will” rather than “thy will,” or worse, “thy will.” thus husband and wife fight for love – and to the death. this permanent, covenantal component of true mar-riage makes divorce impossible, for only death can break a covenant, that is, a family bond. though civil

divorce is possible and sometimes even morally permissible, it does not end a true marriage. When a real sacramental marriage exists, divorce is impossible. this is why Jesus taught that one who (civilly) di-vorces and remarries into a second marriage while their original spouse is alive commits adultery – because one who is “divorced and remarried” is not actually divorced at all; nor are they remarried. We have described what marriage is: a comprehensive, exclusive and per-manent union of one man and one woman naturally ordered towards the procreation and education of children, as well as the good of the spouses. it’s nothing new. As the richly in-telligent Girgis-Anderson-George trio have illustrated in their indis-pensable book What is Marriage? such an understanding of marriage stretches back even thousands of years to ancient non-Christians like Xenophanes, Socrates, Plato, Aris-totle, Plutarch and other thinkers of antiquity. indeed this traditional un-derstanding of marriage is not pecu-liar to any particular religion. Such a commonsensical description of mar-riage spans the millennia, and all kinds of civilizations, worldviews and religions. Yet many of today’s oppo-nents to Christianity just do not know or understand our position. Thus as missionary-hearted Catholics, we are obliged to know and defend what marriage is. For at the mo-ment we live in a “choose-your-own-marriage” society where many false definitions of marriage continue to be offered on a silver platter; but from the Beginning it was not so.

what is Marriage?

this fall, 2015, FacetoFace Ministires is re-launching our weekend Youth retreats. After much prayer and dis-cernment over the past two years, God has made it clear that we are a youth focused ministry and need to follow where He bears fruit. Knowing some of our greatest fruit came from the many years of youth retreats, we followed God’s prompting there again.

St. therese Parish in Leoville, SK, was delighted to hear the news and hosted a retreat on September 26 & 27. Once again, God’s blessings were very apparent during the weekend.

the retreat coordinator, Adele Cras-well states, “The holy Spirit was moving as we, all as one, sat with Jesus in the [Eucharist]. It was

beautiful.”

Many participants had life changing encounters with Christ. For example, one par-ticipant said in a thank you note afterwards, “Prayer ministry changed my life.” And an-other, “During adoration I could feel God all around me. after the retreat I felt like a whole new person.”

Praise God for He is good!

the FacetoFace Youth retreat in Leoville was an amazing experience

and a real eye opener for me. it was my first retreat and i would defi-nitely go back again. the leaders were super funny and made me

feel included in all of the activities. the retreat opened my eyes to a new level of faith in God. One of my favourite experiences was with prayer ministry. through this prayer i felt a bigger connection with God. i met great people and got closer to God. i would recommend a FacetoFace retreat to anyone looking to deepen their faith.
