Thanks to your support and dedication, this year

Dana-Farber:

■ Used whole genome sequencing to identify new

mutations driving 71 percent of skin cancers—the

first-ever discovery in what was previously known as

“junk” DNA

■ Launched a free nutrition app called Ask the

Nutritionist: Recipes for Fighting Cancer that helps

patients undergoing treatment

■ Completed more than 5,000 genetic profiles

of tumor DNA as part of Profile, an unprecedented

research study that is creating the world’s largest

database of genetic abnormalities in cancer

■ Induced complete remission lasting a median

of three years in patients with advanced CLL

through use of a vaccine

■ Headed the first large scale study of female pediatric

cancer survivors and found that infertility rates for

the group were lower than previously thought

Dear Friends,

As 2013 comes to a close, I would like to thank

you for your tremendous support and hard

work over the past year. It is always impressive

to see the impact of so many talented and

dedicated volunteers coming together to plan

and host golf tournaments for Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, and

this year was no exception. Together, tournament organizers, sponsors,

volunteers, and golfers worked together to host 150 tournaments and

events, bringing together nearly 25,000 golfers to raise nearly $6.5

million to support our mission to conquer cancer. These funds play a

critical role in Dana-Farber’s ability to remain on the cutting-edge of

cancer research and patient care in 2013 and beyond.

This year has been full of exciting advances in cancer research

for adult and pediatric cancer patients. For example, Dana-Farber

recently launched a Phase I clinical trial of a new vaccine, which was

fast-tracked by the FDA to treat melanoma, a lethal form of skin cancer.

This is just one example of how funds raised through Jimmy Fund Golf

tournaments are helping advance our lifesaving mission at Dana-Farber

Cancer Institute. On behalf of all the physician-scientists, caregivers,

and patients your hard work supports, I thank you.

It is exciting to imagine what new breakthroughs will take place next

as a result of your enthusiastic efforts to support Dana-Farber and the

Jimmy Fund on the golf course. Thank you so much for all you have

accomplished in 2013, and I look forward to celebrating even more

milestones in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Edward J. Benz Jr., MD

President and CEO, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Thanks To your generous supporT, OUR VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS RAISED NEARLY $6.5 million for Dana-farber anD The Jimmy funD IN 2013.

The impacT of your giVingDana-Farber Cancer Institute’s equal commitment to research and patient care is unique among cancer centers and results in an extraordinary level of collaboration between our scientists and clinicians, speeding the translation of laboratory discoveries into lifesaving treatments for patients all over the world.

unrestricted, flexible funding sustains Dana-Farber with crucial dollars that can be directed where and when they are needed most. as our patient care, research, and outreach initiatives continue to grow, so too does our need for this steady, adaptable funding.

exciting advances in research and technology enable Dana-Farber to unravel cancer’s mysteries at a remarkable pace, yet federal funding for medical research is on the decline. Support from Jimmy Fund Golf helps to fill that gap and keep Dana-Farber at the forefront of discovery, launching new clinical trials and developing new treatments that hold great promise for patients here and around the world.

Gifts without restriction also allow Dana-Farber to provide a range of services to patients and their families, including financial assistance to those in need, and to educate the wider community about the importance of cancer prevention and screening.

When you give to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund, you can be confident your support is making a powerful difference in the fight against cancer for adults and children.
