June is bringing great weather and even greater optimism for full

"opening" of the club and our activities. As I'm sure you are aware, the

CDC and the State are rapidly adjusting their guidance regarding events

and mask requirements, with a significant change in posture expected

on the 30th of June. Already we are able to gather mask-free if we are vaccinated.

Based on these new conditions, we plan to initiate our monthly Friday Night BBQs on June 25th. Please plan on attending to celebrate the beginning of the end,

or the beginning of Summer, or just to celebrate being with your friends again! As usual,

it's a "bring your own", the club will provide the hot BBQ pit. Meet at the pavilion at 5:00.

Many of you are also preparing for our cruise South to Langley, Port Ludlow and Poulsbo,

which promises to be an outstanding event. Due to other pressures, Susan and I will not

be able to attend, but will certainly be there in spirit! See Vanessa's article on the

following page for complete details.

In short, we are getting back to normal, and the Bridge will do everything we can to re-boot our events. I've even heard rumors that the Canadian Border may be open in

September!

May “Work Party”

Cruise to Sucia Island

From the Charthouse—Fleet Captain, Vanessa Finch

Ahoy, SBYCers:

We’re boating as a Club again and it feels GOOD. Last month brought extraordinarily nice

cruising weather and I’m hearing summer forecasts suggesting we’re in for more of the same.

Here’s to spending time afloat with fine friends under sunny skies!

May Cruise Report:

The Sucia Work Party cruise was held May 11 - 13 and produced terrific results from our team’s efforts. 15

members provided 90 hours of volunteer labor for trail maintenance, picnic table building, information kiosk cleaning, windfall clearing and removal of invasive ivy. Please acknowledge these people when you next see

them for the work they put into some less-than-fun jobs (looking at you, Ivy League): Susie & Bill Holleman,

Brian & Jim Barrett, Carol & Pat McGarry, Mari & Dave Latimer, Jennifer Johnston & Bill Plummer,

Carole & Sonny Miller, Debbie & Jon Galbraith. I had the good fortune of celebrating another trip around

the sun with these folks (thanks for the cake!) and especially appreciated everyone’s good natured response to

being shanghaied into a birthday/work party.

Upcoming Cruise News:

June 2 - 8 will find 19 SBYC boats on a Central Puget Sound cruise with visits to Langley Harbor, Port

Ludlow and Poulsbo. Where we’ll go from there is up to each skipper and crew! We can still accommodate

boats at Port Ludlow and Poulsbo if you regret that you didn’t register for the cruise and wish to join us late.

Keeping fingers crossed for fair winds and calm seas on what will be our first Club-hosted cruise since late 2019.

The San Juan Island Summer Crab season opening has not been announced at time of writing. This makes it

tough to confirm a date for our July Crab Cruise to Hunter Bay though past years’ scheduling suggests it

will likely occur July 14 - 16 (with season opening on July 15). This will be an anchor-out event with floating

Happy Hours via dinghy and a “Biggest Crab” contest. Hunter Bay can safely accommodate LOTS of boats at

anchor, has good shore access for walking or biking and is an easy first stop on a longer San Juan Island area cruise. I’ll send members a sign-up reminder with cruise details once the crab season opening date is

announced.

In closing, SBYC’s plans to be cruising in the BC Gulf Islands this summer will have to be put on hold for

another year as a reopening of the US/Canada border for recreational boating appears unlikely anytime soon.

Several sets of cruising pals have made the journey from WA to AK by boat over the past two weeks, using Canadian Customs-approved float plans which allowed passing through BC waters without shore visits. The

social media stories posted by these boaters show empty BC anchorages and sparsely occupied docks upon

arrival in Ketchikan. Who would have guessed we’d be experiencing a second summer without access to our

favorite northern cruising grounds?

Wishing you each a safe, healthy & happy time afloat or ashore, wherever June finds you.

SBYC RECIPROCAL PROGRAM: 2021 UPDATE

In anticipation of an improving COVID situation this summer, many of our partner yacht clubs are ramping

their reciprocal programs back up and will be receiving guests during 2021.

Looking ahead, with the expectation that things will indeed improve, SBYC will need your help to ensure

that we have moorage space to offer to our guests. If you lease a slip on one of the lettered docks (A-J) in

the marina, please consider putting your slip into SBYC’s reciprocal pool so that we may offer its use to a guest from one of our reciprocal clubs while you and your boat are off cruising. We will manage the

arrangements, and you will be compensated $15 for each night your slip is occupied by a guest from one of

our reciprocal partner clubs — it’s a win-win proposition.

We know that SBYC’s continued ability to provide reciprocal moorage benefits is extremely important to

many of you. Your active participation in helping ensure we have slips to offer to guests from the clubs with

whom we share reciprocity is critical for this benefit to continue. Please contact Reciprocal Coordinator

Jon Galbraith at (360) 630-5404 or [email protected] if you would like more information.

You can click here to view the yacht clubs with whom SBYC currently has reciprocal agreements.

NOTE: If you plan to use another club’s reciprocal moorage this year, it’s a good idea to check ahead to

ensure that the club is accepting visitors. You can do this online by clicking on the link in the sentence

above (a window similar to the picture below will open). Then scroll to the club you’re interested in visiting

and click on the icon in the Info column to view that club’s latest information.
