FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK / DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PAST
Dear Sacred Heart Family,
By this time in Advent, we have all heard
someone refer to what is the “real” meaning
of Christmas. Commercials try to fill our
heads with reclaiming the “magic” of
Christmas. Toy drives try to tell us Christmas
is all about the children. Wall street and businesses judge
their worth by how much we buy. Our radio stations, even
Christian ones, are unaware that the song “The 12 Days of
Christmas” begins after Christmas not before. How can we
avoid all the traps of following the wrong star this time of
year? Mary, as usual is the answer.
Mary, in her simple act of visiting her cousin Elizabeth,
reminds us to strike a balance between the time we make
time for others and the time we make time for the quiet
preparation of our Lord. Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth
reflects what many of us do this time of year and that is caring
for someone in need. Elizabeth in her advanced age certainly
need Mary’s help and then responds to Mary’s visit with what
is the heart of one of our most beloved prayers, The Hail
Mary. Elizabeth helps us to refocus that Mary is not the true
reason for her joy, but that the Lord has visited her and for
that reason her own child, John the Baptist, leapt in her
womb.
The other way Mary helps us to prepare correctly for the
coming of the Christ-child comes to us not so much in what is
said in Scripture, but by what is not said. The absence of
details about Mary’s pregnancy itself points to the fact Mary
quietly prepared for our Savior’s coming. This quiet
preparation is perhaps the best antidote to the stress-filled,
jam-packed schedules most of us lead this time of year. Can
I make an effort to focus on what is most important, making
room for the Christ-child in my life? Can I carve out some
quiet time to look at what I am willing to do, or what we can
do as a family, to prepare to let a new light into my life. What
darkness do I still need to leave behind? Can I give the same
time to God as I am giving to shopping?
On one level the gift shopping and gift giving, the lights and
decorations, as well as the parties lighten our spirits this time
of year, but Jesus, I think, if He came to visit us today would
wonder how any of these things makes room for Him to come
into our life with one exception, what am I willing to give
Jesus this Christmas? And if I answer, I will give myself, what
does that mean? Will I give more time in prayer, more service
to those in need, or more treasures to the Church as the 3
Kings gave their treasure? It is in giving that we receive, and
by giving to Jesus we will receive the true meaning of
Christmas.

Querida familia de Sagrado Corazon,
En este tiempo de Adviento todos hemos escuchado referirse a lo que es el “verdadero” significado de la Navidad. Los anuncios comerciales tratan de meternos en la cabeza la idea de la “magia” de la navidad. La colecta de juguetes nos hace pensar que la navidad es solo para los niños. Wall street y los negocios miden su valor por cuanto compran. Nuestras estaciones de radio, incluso las cristianas, ignoran que la canción “Los 12 Días de Navidad” comienza después de la Navidad y no antes. ¿Como podemos evitar todas estas trampas para seguir a la Estrella equivocada en esta época del año? Como siempre la respuesta es María.
María, con su simple acto de visitar a su prima Isabel, nos recuerda que debemos encontrar un balance entre el tiempo que dedicamos a los demás y el tiempo que dedicamos a la preparación silenciosa de nuestro Señor. La visita de María a su prima Isabel refleja lo mucho lo que nosotros hacemos en este tiempo del año, que es la de cuidar de alguien que lo necesita. Isabel por su edad avanzada realmente necesitaba la ayuda de María y responde a su visita con lo que ahora es el centro de una de nuestras oraciones más queridas. El Ave María. Isabel nos ayuda a reenfocar lo que era el verdadero motivo de su alegría, no era María sino el hecho de que el Señor la ha visitado y por esa razón su propio hijo, Juan el Bautista, había saltado en su vientre.
Otra forma en que María nos ayuda a prepararnos correctamente para la venida de niño Jesús llega a nosotros no tanto por lo que dice en las escrituras, sino por lo que no se dice. La misma ausencia de detalles sobre el embarazo de María nos indica el hecho de que María se preparó en silencio para la venida de nuestro Salvador. Esta preparación silenciosa es tal vez el mejor antídoto a los horarios apurados y llenos de estrés que muchos de nosotros llevamos en esta época del año. ¿Puedo hacer un esfuerzo para enfocarme en lo que es más importante, y hacer un lugar para el niño Jesús en mi vida? Puedo sacar un tiempo en silencio para mirar lo que estoy dispuesta a hacer, o lo que podemos hacer como familia, para prepararnos a dejar una nueva luz en mi vida. ¿Qué tinieblas necesito aun dejar atrás? ¿Puedo dedicar a Dios el mismo tiempo que le doy a hacer compras?
Por un lado, comprar regalos y entregar regalos, las luces y las decoraciones este año, así como las fiestas alegran nuestros espíritus en esta época del año, pero creo que si Jesús viniera a visitarnos hoy se preguntaría como podemos hacer tiempo para el en medio de estas cosas, y así entrar en nuestra vida con una excepción, ¿que estoy dispuesto a darle a Jesús en esta Navidad? Y si respondo, que, a mí mismo, ¿qué es lo que significa eso? ¿Dedicare más tiempo en oración, más servicio a los necesitados o más tesoros a la Iglesia, así como los 3 Reyes entregaron su tesoro? Es dando que recibimos, y dándole a Jesús recibiremos el verdadero significado de la Navidad.

CHRISTMAS CORNER
POSADAS
Sacred Heart will again celebrate Las
Posadas. They are celebrated yearly
from December 16-24, is a religious
festival traditionally held in Mexico
and parts of Latin America.
Translating to ‘The Inns’ in Spanish,
Las Posadas is an important part of the Christmas
festivities. Over the nine nights of celebrations, parties
are held at different people’s homes. Before each
gathering, all the guests form a procession to mark Mary
and Joseph’s search for an inn on the night of Jesus’s
birth. The march is usually led by an angel as a symbolic
act of Mary and Joseph finding shelter in a stable when
they were unable to find lodging in Bethlehem. The
parties are joyous occasions, including prayers, food,
music, fireworks, and piñatas!

We have been given a gorgeous, framed image of our Lady of Guadalupe and other gifts that we will raffle off in the month of December. Please see any member of the Hispanic committee for a ticket ($5 each) Drawing is on Christmas Day.

RINCON NAVIDEÑO
LAS POSADAS
El Sagrado Corazón volverá a celebrar las Posadas.
Una fiesta religiosa que se celebra tradicionalmente en
México y muchas partes de Latinoamérica durante el
mes de Diciembre del 16 al 24. Las Posadas son parte
importante de las festividades navideñas. Durante
estas nueve noches de celebración, las festividades se
realizan en los hogares de diferentes personas. Antes
de cada reunión, todos los invitados participan de una
procesión como señal de la búsqueda de posada que
recorrió María y José la noche del nacimiento Jesús.
La procesión generalmente es dirigida por un Ángel
como un acto simbólico de María y José encontrando
refugio en un pesebre cuando no pudieron encontrar
alojamiento en Belén. ¡Estas son celebraciones
jubilosas, con rezos, comida, música, fuegos
pirotécnicos, y piñatas!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE
Even though this year Christmas and New Year's Eve fall on a Saturday, these Masses do not fulfill our Sunday obligation. So that means that if you go to Mass on Saturday morning for Christmas, you are still obliged to go to one of the Sunday Masses. Going to the Saturday Vigil Mass at 4:00 pm on Christmas day will not serve for both days, it only serves for the Sunday Mass, not Christmas. The same is true for New Year's Day, The Solemnity of Mary, which is a Holy Day of Obligation, we are obliged to go to one of the New Year's Day Masses AND one of the Sunday masses. Going to Church two times in two days may seem like a lot, but I am sure you can agree that it is the perfect gift for Jesus.

HOMEBOUND OR SICK
Please keep us informed so we can minister to those who are ill at home or in the hospital. If you would like to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation or the Eucharist, please contact the office at 417-869-3646. Following the holidays, Fr. Ray will again be making house calls to all those who are homebound.

Aunque este año la Navidad y el Año Nuevo
caen en día sábado, las misas no cumplen con
nuestra obligación dominical. Lo que significa
que, si usted viene a Misa el Sábado por la mañana
por el día de Navidad, todavía tiene la obligación
de asistir a una de las misas del Domingo. Asistir
a la misa de vigilia del Sábado a las 4:00 pm en el
día de Noche Buena no servirá para ambos días,
solo sirve para la misa del domingo no para
Navidad. Lo mismo es cierto para el Dia de Año
Nuevo, la Solemnidad de María, el cual es un Dia
Santo de Obligación, estamos obligados a asistir a
una de las misas del Año Nuevo Y a una de las
misas del domingo. Ir a la Iglesia dos veces en dos
días pareciera mucho, pero estoy seguro de que
ustedes estarán de acuerdo conmigo de que es el
regalo perfecto para Jesús.
