1 Cedarwood Preparatory From the Headmistress 10 March 2015 Weekly Newsletter Dear Parents I hope to see many family and friends of Cedarwood at the Barnyard on Sunday afternoon. The PTA works very hard to arrange events that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and this should be great fun for all! On that note, please let the PTA know if you are able to help in any way with fundraising. Perhaps you have contacts for a prize that can be raffled at an event, or even a contact for getting borewors at a good price! We are already preparing for our FUN DAY which will be held on 10 October, so be sure to diarise this date as this is definitely an event not to be missed. Congratulations go to Adrienne Zoghby (Grade 1Z) who got married to Jonathan this past weekend. Adrienne will return to school as Mrs Shippon, and we wish them all the best for their future together. Wedding bells are in the air as Miss Helen Harper prepares for her wedding in August! Please remember the parent talk, primarily for Grade 6 parents, tomorrow morning at 7.30am. College staff will be informing you of the expectations of College life. Whilst the talk is geared towards Grade 6 parents, anyone is welcome to come and find out more about our wonderful Cedarwood College, which has so many opportunities for our children to “be the best that they can be”. The children are preparing for our very first Afrikaans Day, which is to be held next Friday, 20 March. (See invitation further in this newsletter). In conjunction with the College Afrikaans department and Orion College, the morning promises to be filled with cultural activities and “baie Afrikaans praat”. Even if you have not officially replied, please feel free to pop in during the morning and support the development of Afrikaans at Cedarwood. Finally, please remember that we have on open door policy and we invite conversations on any concerns or issues, no matter how difficult. Our team work approach is to, at best, deal with situations through the correct channels so that a suitable and constructive outcome is reached. We do also, of course, always welcome positive encouragement and support!

From the Sports Desk…

They say that it is the community of people that make a school into the success story that it is. This has been demonstrated more abundantly by the community of Cedarwood school than any other school I know of. We have seen, as a school, how caring the people at Cedarwood are in all our time here. In the last few months, we have been inundated with donations of various kinds for the sports department and we are really grateful for this generosity.

Joshua Richardson donated a very good looking Kookaburra cricket bag and some equipment to go with it. For those in the know, they don't come any better than Kookaburra in cricket. In addition, he donated some school shoes to be given to any willing child and they are literally brand new! Thank you Joshua.

Seth Arends discovered that his soccer boots were getting smaller and decided that these could be put to better use by someone else. We were given the mandate as a school to select the beneficiary. Thank you Seth Arends, it is such a great gesture!

Mr. Du Plessis, whose daughter, Mia, is in Grade 3P, used to play cricket many years ago. I am sure that he would be playing for the Proteas if he had wanted. He says that he has decided to give away his two magic bats that he used so many years ago to anyone at Cedarwood. It is a very kind gesture Mr du Plessis and we appreciate it very much.

Another donation comes from Byron Chaplin in Grade 8 at Cedarwood College. He has donated a whole set of golf clubs to the school and his exact message is "Cedarwood Kids, Enjoy! Thank you Byron, we will!

We would like to say thank you to each and everyone that has made a donation to the school in many ways, both big and small, and would like to say please take you kindness to all corners of our beautiful country. It is such people that make this the Rainbow Nation that it is!

Last week on Wednesday, we played cricket against Jubilate Primary School at Cedarwood. When they won the toss and opted to bat first scoring an impressive 116, we thought we were done for, having not had opponents that have made more than 100. When it was our turn, we stepped up to the crease, I must admit that it was with some trepidation as I saw our top order batsman crumbling and going out for single digit scores. Then Callum Lucas stepped in at number five, everything started falling into place. Our run rate started spiking and the opponents feeling a shiver run down their spines. In the end, we topped their 116 with five overs to spare and Callum made 101. Well done to Cedarwood. You make us proud.

The Sports Department would like to apologise to all the parents for the cancellation of matches in the last two weeks. We had arranged several matches with Jubilate, as both our schools were having a break from our different leagues. Jubilate developed a problem at their school which was beyond their control resulting in them only being able to fulfil one fixture with us.

This Thursday, we will be hosting an athletics meet against our perennial rivals, Orion College and Northsands. We hope that we will see and hear you!

Have a great week! Oliver Ngwenya

Grade 6 Hoodies

The Grade 6 hoodie samples will be arriving this week! The hoodies are R230 each (Terry Lucas has worked hard to keep the

cost as low as possible – thanks Terry!). They will be ready by the beginning of Term 2.

You will notice the Grade 6’s sporting their hoodies on Fridays in winter.

Grade R Paving

If you’ve ever been at the Grade R block when it’s raining, you’ll know the drainage was non-existent in that area! Over the mid-term break, the PTA provided the budget to improve the

drainage and re-pave the area. We hope you find it’s greatly improved now.

Thanks so much to Margaret and Karen for their hard work in organizing this.

Have a wonderful week! The PTA Team

Grade R outing to Papachino’s

The Grade R’s are currently learning about their senses and focusing on the sense of smell and taste this week. We decided that a great way to explore our sense of taste and smell is to make our make pizzas. On Tuesday, 10th March at 9:30 the Grade R’s piled into the Cedarwood school bus, excited and eager to get to Papachino’s.

We were greeted warmly by the staff at Papachino’s and they helped us to make our own pizzas. We had to knead the dough, add our own toppings and then watch the pizzas bake in the fire oven. Phendukani got very extravagant with his vegetarian pizza and even added Olives. Lebone tried to pile on as many ingredients as his pizza could handle. Alexander tried hard to not eat all the toppings before the pizza was cooked and Keenan took on the manager role and helped the staff with their duties.

All the Grade R boys loved the amazing play area and were taken off by their imaginations and perfectly engaged in fantasy play. After Aarav spent a long time savouring his pizza, he then took stern ownership of the toy car which he used to ‘drive’ to fascinating places. Yeshaai and Faizaan explored new ways to climb and balance; and loved how the slush puppie juice turned their tongues green.

A great time was had by all. On the bus ride home Phendukani asked “So we going back tomorrow and then you can have more coffee, teacher?”

Do you have a MySchool Card? Please remember to use your

Remember, each time you swipe, you give money back to

our school.

We are looking for old wheel barrows and bird baths for our Junior Sensory Garden as we would like to create a few fairy gardens. The wheel barrows can

be rusted and have holes—this will add to

the effect.

Dear Parents

Cedarwood will be supporting Kitty and Puppy Haven charity group this term. Those of you who have visited this centre know what an amazing job this organization does and we would like to show them our support and gratitude for the hard work they do.

Each teacher will have a collection tin in her class in which children can place their small change from tuck or small donations from their pocket money. Other members of the family are also allowed to make donations should they wish, however, we would like to encourage the children to make their donations from their own money (change from tuck etc.), as opposed to being given money from their parents solely for this purpose, thereby instilling a sense of responsibility to the community.

There will be a prize for the class who raises the most money.

Thanking you in advance for your support The community committee.

On March 28 at 8:30 pm, WWF’s Earth Hour will begin. Started in 2007, Earth Hour is a symbolic act to get us thinking about our planet and our impact on it. But more than that, it’s also part of a simple idea to start an environmental resolution -- this is not only about one hour in the dark, it’s about creating a brighter future. Even though you're switching off your lights and electronic appliances for the environment, you don't have to sit twiddling your thumbs in the dark. There is still a lot you can do without using a watt of electricity. Earth

Hour can be as fun as it is good for the planet, and if you're looking for some entertaining ways to spend it you're in luck because we've rounded up 9 fun activities that are sure to deliver a good time completely off-grid!

Have a candle-lit dinner, Invite friends around for a pub quiz and board games by candlelight, Take a wildlife walk or go star-

gazing, Go for a night-time city walk, Go for a night-time bike ride, Try candle-lit yoga or exercise, Have an unplugged jam session at home, Read a bed time story by torch light,

Have a family conversation—they are actually nice people.
