Welcome to the 2011 Campmaster Popcorn Sale…

Thank you for investing the time and energy to “captain” your Scouting Unit’s 2011 CAMP MASTERS Popcorn Campaign. This sale plays an essential role in allowing you to generate unlimited funds for your unit.

Imagine being able to pay for EVERYTHING your unit does for an entire year with popcorn sale profits. Trips…camp outs…trainings…advancements…blue & gold banquets...courts of honor…trailers…uniforms…it can and has been done!

Last year, Scouts throughout the Indian Nations Council sold over 1.2 million dollars. Our top seller was over $5,000. Our top unit sold $41,000!

Our vision is to genuinely educate and give each Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, and Venturing Crew the opportunity to participate in this incredibly profitable sale.

This “Leaders Guide Book” will help to introduce our 2011 Popcorn Campaign, what it entails, how it will benefit you, time lines, the products, the prizes, online ordering and people who can help you.

Hats off to you for making a difference in the lives of the Scouts in your unit! Don’t forget to visit the CAMP MASTERS popcorn website at www.campmasters.org and the Indian Nations Council website at www.okscouts.org

Sell the Scouting ProgramRemember to sell your adventure

Remember we are selling the Scouting Program, not Popcorn. Selling popcorn as a fundraiser enables a unit to have the funds to deliver their “program”. We are selling Scouting, and people will buy if asked.

482% of the public has never been asked to buy popcorn from Scouts.

People need to know why Scouts are selling popcorn…what is the reason?4Volunteer leaders should inform Scouts, and their parents, how the popcorn sale directly benefits their unit program and directly benefits individual Scouts and their families. 4A printed calendar and unit budget will help educate parents and Scouts on “plans for the upcoming year”.

The popcorn costs too much.4Surveys show that people will purchase from a Scout, if asked, and if they hear “how it will benefit the Scout” who is selling.4This is a unit fundraiser…not a “bargain sale”. Again, it is not about popcorn, it is about program.

Our pack, troop, crew, or post has another fundraiser and we do not have a need to “sell popcorn”.4If this is the case, then consider allowing the “total unit commission” to go directly into a “Scout’s account” for weekend campouts, field trips, summer resident camp, Cub Scout day camp, etc.4Many units find the “Popcorn Sale” and “Camp Card Sale” are adequate for both their Unit and

individual Scout annual needs…and parents appreciate not having to come up with funds (dues) every week, month, etc.

How do I Start My Sale?Begin with your immediate family members: 4Mom4Dad4Brothers and Sisters4Cousins4Grandparents4Aunts and Uncles4Close Neighbors, etc…4Who purchased popcorn from YOU Last year. You can do this as soon as you receive your “take order forms”…then canvas your neighborhood, friends, etc…those who may support your unit’s popcorn sale. And remember, tell everyone about your unit’s (pack or troop) program and why you are selling popcorn…82% of the public is never asked to buy, and they will, if they know why you are selling.

MAKE YOUR HIGH ADVENTURE DREAMS A REALITY WITH POPCORN

Wouldn’t it be nice to participate in all the activities you wanted if you could pay for uniforms and registration without any money coming out of your pocket?

The average unit commission on a container of popcorn is 35% of the container sale price. Using this amount as a guide, here are approximate costs in popcorn containers of several Scouting activities:

6 Popcorn Leaders Guide

4When selling popcorn in your neighborhood always have an adult or buddy with you.

4ALWAYS wear your uniform. Everybody loves to support a Scout in uniform.

4Remember to always have 2 pens with you and make sure you keep your Take-Order Form as neat as possible.

4Never enter a stranger’s house.

4Keep checks and cash in a separate envelope with your name on it.

4ALWAYS walk on the sidewalk and driveway. NOT through the yard. Watch for traffic.

4Never sell at night.

4Make sure you know the date when you will be delivering the popcorn to your customers.

4Not every house will buy so do not become discouraged.

4The more people you ask – the more people will buy.

4Put popcorn sale articles in your school, church, and community bulletins/newsletters.

4ALWAYS act like a Scout. Be polite and courteous. Wear a smile and introduce yourself.

4Most importantly, when you are selling popcorn tell the people what the money goes for.

Be Safe!1. Ask your parent to be the first to buy popcorn.

2. Ask your relatives to buy popcorn. (Brothers and sisters)

3. Ask your neighbors to buy popcorn.

4. Ask the parents of your friends (not in Scouts) to buy popcorn.

5. Take a popcorn order form to your place of worship and ask people to buy popcorn during coffee/fellowship hour to buy popcorn (get permission first).

6. Ask your parents if they can take a popcorn order form to work and ask their co-workers to buy popcorn. (They may need to get permission first.)

7. Ask a parent or fellow Scout to go door-to-door with you in your neighborhood to ask people to buy popcorn.

8. Ask your parents or relatives if they give out gifts during the holiday season. If yes, ask them to consider giving out popcorn (in a tin decorated for the holidays) as a holiday gift.

9. ALWAYS WEAR YOUR UNIFORM!

A Scout is Safe. When conducting your popcorn sale, it is vital to en-sure proper safety measures especially when children are involved. Below are some popcorn general safety abd sales tips.

4Prizes are easily promoted (see sample prize sheet included with packet).

4Prizes offer greater motivational impact for the youth members who sell.

The 2011 Popcorn Sale offers two different Commission Plans. One plan features prizes and the other does not.

12 Popcorn Leaders Guide

1) Be Neat! - You will make a great impression if you are in your class A uniform. Wearing your uniform when selling gives an impression of professionalism and shows people that you are proud of what you are doing.

2) Be Prepared: Learn the presentation below and don’t change it. Your presentation should never be, “Do you want to buy some popcorn?” That question all too easily leads to the one word answer, “NO”. People will not be purchasing from you because you asked them to. They will be buying from you because YOU will have created a relationship with them very quickly and they will want to help you and the scouts.3) Maintain Eye Contact! This is very important. Maintaining eye contact shows that you have confidence in yourself, your product, the program, and your group.

3) Always Be Polite & Courteous: You will be surprised by how many people who will tell you “NO” just to see how you handle the rejection. You will be even more surprised by how many people who

will change their answer to “YES”, just because you were polite and professional in the face of rejection.

4) Thank Everyone: Even the people who don’t buy. Just saying, “Thanks for listening”, will often cause people to change their mind.

5) Keep Moving!: If you are selling at one of the commercial locations (Acme, WalMart, etc.), you must continue to move and talk to people. Don’t assume that they will walk up to you, they won’t! The more people you approach, the more you will talk to, and the more sales you will make.

6) Keep Smiling: Do you like grumpy people? Neither does anyone else. Keep a smile on your face.

Popcorn Tips from a Pro

The PresentationTell them who you are: “Hi sir / ma’am, my name is ______________________ (First name only!)

Continue with the group you are representing: “and I’m a scout with pack / troop ________”

Tell them what you are doing: “We’re selling popcorn to help raise money for our Pack / Troop.”

Tell them what they can do for you: “You can help us by buying some of our delicious popcorn.

Now get the sale by telling them to buy in a question: “You’ll help us out, won’t you?”
