The last 8-9 years have proved to be challenging

times for the private club industry, and the Country

Club of Paducah has not been immune to the im-

pact. The economic recession of 2008-2010 result-

ed in a significant reduction in the number of Club

memberships and in the midst of that, we had the

ice storm which also put a strain on our member-

ship and financial resources. The Club enjoyed a

few years of positive growth only to lose our fair-

ways in 2014 which once again, hit us financially

despite the generous donations of many members.

Understanding the challenges facing private clubs,

your board of directors has been working overtime

beginning with the annual Board Retreat that was

held in early March to focus on financial health

and the strategic vision of the Club.

We reflect on prior years of operation as we look

to the future. We recognize the club as having the

best dining experience around for the value, one of

the best manicured and most challenging golf

courses within a couple hundred miles of Paducah

and a tennis facility that is unmatched by any or-

ganization in the area, and that makes us proud.

But we also see a club in need of repairs, equip-

ment that needs to be replaced and capital im-

provements that need to be completed. Today, the

club is on track financially to manage day to day

operations, but we need to improve cash flow to

address capital improvements and to provide op-

portunities to enhance the member experience in

the very near future.

Last year, the Board was selective as it addressed

expenditures for capital improvements and focused

primarily on taking care of only the repairs deter-

mined to be necessary. This year’s Board will con-

tinue with that philosophy and we have established

a goal of improving our cash flow. Emphasis will

be placed on maximizing efficiency in all areas of

operation and eliminating operating expenses

where possible without diminishing services to the

membership.

We plan to utilize new financial metrics to monitor

our progress and continue the use of the “Four Dis-

ciplines of Execution” strategy to realize the

“Wildly Important Goals” for the Club. I encour-

age all of you to reach out to a board member or

Tim with any thoughts you may have that will help

us on our mission with funding future improve-

ments of the Club. It is important to us to know

what offerings are relevant to you with your mem-

bership and how we can increase the value you

place on that membership. We look forward to

hearing from you!

In April, Denise “Sissy” White will have been on the waitstaff team

and a part of our families for 35 YEARS

We extend our deepest condolences to the

family and friends of

Mr. Bill Black.

He and Nancy have been members since 1971.

Page 2: From the President Jason Siener, President

Before I forget to mention it later in my letter, please review the

hours of operation on the back page of the newsletter. In an

effort to focus on efficiency and productivity, we have made a

few changes to underutilized times. I would also be remis if I

did not remind everyone to be reaching out to those that might

be interested in joining the Club. We have a fantastic promotion

currently underway that will appeal to any prospective member

for any membership type. We have already been fortunate to

have six new members join the Club this year already and hope-

fully that is just the beginning. Please let me know if you have

anyone that needs to be contacted and I will be happy to reach

out to them.

The first quarter of the year has flown by already and we are on

the verge of truly starting the 2017 season at the Country Club

of Paducah. There are a lot of new and exciting things headed

your way and I can’t wait to get things rolling. Our new Golf

Pro Chad has started off at a furious pace planning for the sea-

son and kicking things off with a new event, the “Klondike

Classic” on April 1st. This true demonstration of golfing abili-

ties or perhaps, just some lucky shots, will provide a round of

golf unlike any other held at the Club. Also on tap for this

month, the LGA Opening Day Luncheon will be held on April

13th and the seasonal “Kick-Off Scramble” will be held on April

22nd.

Speaking of new, I would like to extend my sincere welcome to

Mr. Bob Hoppmann who has joined the management team at the

Club in the roll of Dining Room Manager. I believe many of

you probably know Bob from his many years with the Pasta

House and can attest to his ability to provide great dining experi-

ences. Bob is also very active within the community and I am

anxious for him to help spread the word about all the Club has to

offer. Please welcome Bob into our family; I know he is excited

to be a part of it!

And speaking of family, it is important for everyone

to know that on April 13th the Club will be cele-

brating a very important anniversary. Can you

recall what you were doing on this day 35 years

ago? The year was 1982. Ronald Reagan was

President, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts topped

the charts with “I Love Rock and Roll” and for

one very special lady, she was walking into the

front of the Club for her first day at work. It was

on this day that Denise “Sissy” White became part

of the Country Club of Paducah family. For the

past 35 years, Sissy has come to work with

deep rooted love and passion for the Club that

knows no end. Her dedication and commitment

to taking care of the members has never waiv-

ered and has been a big part of the lives of

many, many, members. I want to thank Sissy

for all she has done for this Club over the

years and like her Mom, she will always be

synonymous with what makes the Country

Club of Paducah, what it is. Thanks Sissy! You

are one of the best and we are lucky to have you!

From the General Manager Timothy R. Straley, GM & COO

A quick preview of some new menu items to look for-

ward to: Loaded Cheddar Baked Potato Soup with

smoked bacon, sour cream and green onions; Italian

Gerber Sandwich (shaved smoked ham griddled hot on

garlic French loaf with provel and mozzarella cheeses;

Kentucky Bourbon Glazed Tenderloin Brochettes and

much, much more.

I had the opportunity to attend the “Chef to Chef” Con-

ference in Atlanta. I was able to network with many oth-

er club chefs and I came away with the fact that we are

doing many things at our club very well. Yes, there is

always room from improvements. We have developed a

strong “culinary brigade” that strives for excellence and

takes great pride in what we produce for our member-

ship. We accept any special request as a challenge and

are committed to exceed the expectation of our member-

ship and guests.

Michael Harlow, Executive Chef

Hey there! Did you check out all the pictures from our Jr.

Culinary Academy that was held in March? We had such

a fun time! Also, we only had one meltdown, and one

loose tooth pulled out – shout out to Madison Darnell, I

hope the tooth fairy came! Participants were divided into

three “teams” according to age. Red team consisted of 12

kids ages 6 & 7 and was led by Mr. Tim, Chef Chance,

and Miss Tori. Red team enjoyed assembling lasagna,

and making dessert and pizzas – those

were some beautiful pizzas! Red team

also enjoyed using Chef Chance as a

human jungle gym. Congratulations

to the red team: Clayton Jones, Lucy

Jones, Ethan Roark, Rex Johnston,

McCoy Gregory, Wells Hancock,

Alex Anderson, London Anderson,

Owen Brown, Lillian Livingston, Elle

Augustus, & Reagan Glisson.

Blue team consisted of 9 kids, ages 8

& 9 and was led by Chef Mary Kay, Miss Cheyenne, and

myself (go blue team!). Blue team made meatballs, baked

pizzas, and learned how to properly handle a knife and

cut up veggies for the pizzas. They also got their hands

dirty while flouring and searing chicken (I think more

flour went on the floor than on the chicken, but hey – it

was fun). Congratulations to the blue team: Audrey Sims,

Eliza Esper, Kara Brien, Allison Ricketts, Annie Jones,

Christian Anderson, Katie O’Neill, Madison Darnell, and

Jack Nelson.

The third team was the green team, the “big kids.” Green

team consisted of the elite 5 – ages 10, 11, & 12 and was

led by our Executive Chef Mike. Green team did awe-

some in the kitchen all day cooking, slicing, and learning

lots of new things. They even made house-made sauces

and hand rolled fresh pasta! Congratulations green team:

Ellie Kate Gregory, Ryan Jones, Megan Dallas, Macey

Evitts, & Ashley Higdon.

Coming up in April, we have our Seafood Dinner buffet

on Good Friday, April 14th. One of our most popular buf-

fets, you won’t believe the amount

and variety of seafood you’ll see at

this extravagant buffet.

Spring is in the air! Join us for our

Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April

15th for lunch, kids crafts, and our

massive egg hunt outside! Then,

return on Sunday, April 16th for

another extraordinary display of

food at our Easter Brunch.

Ladies night out is back this month with Derby Hat Dec-

orating on April 20th! Create your very own beautiful

and unique derby hat. Then show it off at our derby party

in May!

YET ANOTHER member-favorite kid event is coming

up – Spring Fishing Derby! Come out and test your luck

in the golf course ponds. Who will get the catch of the

day? (P.S. In the event of rain, this event will be moved

to May 1st)

Check out the flyers for these fun events, and be sure to

follow us on Facebook! See you soon!

I am excited to become a member of the management

team at The Country Club of Paducah. More importantly,

I am honored to work with the professional staff with

such a high reputation.

As an Eagle Scout, I try my best to live the 12 points of

Scouting: trustworthy, loyal, helpful…… I know most of

you know me from my pasta and salad days, and I look

forward to serving all our members and staff.

If there is anything you may need of me, please let me

know for the benefit of the Club.

From the Golf Shop

Now that time change is here and the weather is get-

ting better by the day, it truly feels like the busy

spring golf season is upon us. That being said, the

prime weekday and weekend tee times will continue

to be in greater demand. If you are planning to play

on the weekend or a prime day of the week, please

make sure to reserve your tee time in advance. Also,

as a courtesy to other members, if you have booked a

tee time and then find that you will not be able to use

the time, please contact the Golf Shop so that we can

make that time available to other members.

As many of you may or may not know, the Club will

now own the Golf Shop and I will be responsible for

stocking and merchandising the Golf Shop. I am

very excited to begin bringing new product into the

Golf Shop, and giving our members a new selection of

golf, lifestyle, and performance apparel. In the up-

coming months please look for selections from Vine-

yard Vines, Donald Ross, Under Armour Fitness, and

FootJoy to begin arriving in the Golf Shop. We will

also begin receiving accessories shipments from Im-

perial (headwear), Signs by the Sea, (accessory items),

and AM&E (head covers). I am also currently in the

process of beginning to order apparel for fall/holiday

2017. Brands such as Southern Tide and Turtleson

are already in the mix, but please let me know if there

are any other apparel companies that you would like

to see in your Golf Shop.

Lastly, I would like to let our membership know that

the Golf Shop has put an added emphasis on fitting

and demo equipment for the 2017 season. We will

offer full trial sets from Titleist and Callaway, as well

as additional demo equipment from Taylor Made.

The Golf Shop will also be outfitted with fitting carts

from Titleist and Taylor Made and we can fit for a

variety of manufacturer’s. Another new piece of fit-

ting equipment that we will offer is the Titleist Vokey

SM6 fitting bag, which offers a wide variety of lofts,

bounces, and grinds in this popular new wedge. If

you have any interest in trying new irons, wedges,

woods, or hybrids please plan to make use of the CCP

Golf Shop as well as your knowledgeable staff of PGA

Professionals.

Your PGA Professionals would like to

offer a spring season junior golf program

geared towards our juniors who are play-

will take place on Thursday, April 27th at

beginning golfers, but will also be a good

way for more experienced golfers to fine

tune their fundamentals. The clinics will

offer basic golf instruction, and to keep

the atmosphere fun we will offer wine for

all participants while we are at the range.

I cannot emphasize enough that these

clinics are for any lady member that may

have an interest in learning about golf in

its most simple form. Cost for each clin-

ic will be $30. Please call the Golf Shop

Golf Course News Larry Hantle, CGCS

April is upon us and the forecast is

for continued above normal tem-

peratures. March was a typical

roller coaster ride with a record

low of 19 and a record high of 84

with a fair amount of moisture

(rain and a little snow) mixed in

with several damaging storms.

On the turf side, the zoysia was

responding to longer days and

warmer temperatures until the third

week when the cold record oc-

curred. That zapped the leaves in

many places but did not cause any

permanent damage. It is starting to

recover as I write this on the 24th

but the cold has taken away some

of the color. The same can be said

for the greens which lost their vi-

brancy and stopped their growth.

Greens’ aeration went exceedingly

well considered it rained both days.

The one negative with aeration was

the 3 leaks in the irrigation system

as it was started that delayed a fer-

tilizer application to speed recov-

ery from aeration. This is the first

time in several years that we have

started with a leak and the first

time ever starting with three. The

new rough mowers have arrived

and mowing has begun. The new

mower is wider and faster and we

hope it will increase our productiv-

ity. One negative already noticed

is that it does not climb hills and

slopes as well as our old mowers.

April will see the turf starting to

grow everywhere and mowing cy-

cles will begin. The water treat-

ment company plans to be here the

first week of April to install the

injection system to allow us to

have better quality water when

Mother Nature does not provide us

with her best. We expect this will

give all of our living plants and turf

a boost. It may be slow at first but

hopefully will be noticeable by

summer.

On a less positive

note, our equip-

ment manager

(mechanic) of the

last 4+ years is

leaving on March

31st. Gabe Town-

send came to us as Larry Lear

(over 30 years service) was retiring

and filled the gap at that time.

Gabe grew up in Arizona and had

moved to Kentucky to care for his

grandparents and uncle who lived

in Smithland and Ferdinand, Indi-

ana. Through his years here, he

has seen all three pass away but the

straw that broke the camel’s back

for Gabe was his sister unexpected-

ly dying in early March. He wants

to be closer to family than a 2 day

drive and it is totally understanda-

ble.

While here, Gabe has been much

more than someone who keeps the

equipment in running order. He

has been instrumental in preparing

meals for our grounds staff recog-

nition program. He took Tim

Straley’s idea and produced the

grill cart.

He and wife

April were

fixtures at

the kid’s

fishing der-

by, and they teamed up to produce

the Halloween hayride in 2015.

Gabe also played a large role in

improving the slip ‘n slide each

year for the family campout. He

will be missed and we wish him

well in his new journey in life.

Spring is here and we look forward

to seeing what Mother Nature has

in store for us. The greens should

recover quickly from aeration and

return to the quality expected. The

fairways will green up fully and

provide exceptional lies while the

ryegrass in the rough will fill in

and frame the fairways. The last

piece of a successful year will be

your participation and we hope to

see and talk with you on the course soon and often.

Beginning in April of 2017

any members who begin a

lesson program with your

PGA Professionals will be

automatically enrolled into the

CCP Biggest Loser Contest.

This contest will track mem-

bers handicap index from the

time that they begin their in-

struction program to the end

of October. The member with

the biggest improvement in

their handicap index will be

crowned the CCP Biggest

Loser and will be given a gift

from Titleist to commemorate

their improvement. To be

enrolled in this contest you

need to begin a lesson pro-

gram with either Chad or

Ryan by the end of May. We

look forward to seeing how

many golfers take the chal-

lenge of improving their

game, and becoming the 1st

CCP Biggest Loser.

Spring has sprung. I know that due to the Swing into Spring

Mixer that was just completed. We enjoyed some social

“Funpetitive” tennis. The best representation at the event was

from the Dr. Carl and Jil Baker family. Nicholas, Bradley and

Mary added to the atmosphere of fun. Thank you, Bradley, for

spending your last day prior to heading back to school. Thank

you, Mary, for playing your first ever competitive tennis with

us. Thank you, Nicholas, for the most amazing near-make com-

bination “Swing-Swing” screen play overhead shot with your

dad, Dr. Carl. Thank you, Jil, for rounding them all up and cor-

ralling them to the tennis bubble. Great to have their example of

tennis being fun for the whole family.

Along with the Funpetitive play, we also had an impressive

display of target annihilation put on by Adam Chustz. He not

only beat the field of competitors but also special attempts by

Jamie O’Hara and myself. Very impressive Adam.

With Spring’s arrival, that can only mean Summer is right

around the corner. New Summer Junior and Adult Clinic sched-

ules are out. Please look at the schedules and contact the tennis

center with any questions. Our Spring Clinics will remain con-

sistent through the end of May for Adults and the end of school

for juniors.

USTA Session 2 for 2017 begins in April. Home matches are

posted so you will know when to come watch our ladies do

what they do well, win. Thank you to Kelly Clapp and Julie

Farmer for taking lead roles with these teams. Good Luck CCP

Ladies USTA Teams.

We will begin Friday Night Mixed Doubles in May. The first

Friday of most months we will be playing Mixed Doubles from

6:00pm to 7:30pm or 8:00pm, depending on hard we play. How

hard you play will also likely decide how much you eat at the

Club afterwards. The first event is Friday, May 5th. Cinco de

Mayo, what could we possibly do for fun on Cinco de Mayo?

Bring your partner or we can help you find one. Feel free to

bring a guest to play with you and show them how we enjoy the

awesome facility at the Country Club of Paducah.
