The Position

The Bergman School District, Bergman, Arkansas, Board of Education, is seeking a highly qualified and fully certified superintendent of schools. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2019.

McPherson & Jacobson L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the board of education in identifying and screening the candidates.

The Qualifications

The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The board has identified the following desired characteristics:

The Bergman School District Board of Education is seeking a superintendent:

• Who is student-centered, focusing on development of all students’ academic, social, and emotional well-being.

• Who recruits, develops, and retains talented professionals to help foster those skills to increase academic achievement and facilitate lifetime success for all students.

• Who is a visionary leader who will build on Bergman’s tradition of student success, creating challenging, innovative, and diverse learning experiences and opportunities for all students.

• Who is knowledgeable of current trends in educational practice, legislative impact, and financial management.

• Who is an enthusiastic learner, displaying a teachable spirit, and exhibiting high moral character and an even temperament.

• Who values and listens to stakeholders while engaging them in a collaborative culture to understand the impact of decisions and how they relate to student achievement.

• Who exhibits high expectations for both students and staff and creates a culture of accountability for everyone.

Bergman is located ten miles north of Harrison, Arkansas, on Highway 7. Fayetteville is located 80 miles to the east, and Branson, Missouri is 40 miles to the north.

Major employers in the town of 445 residents is the Bergman School District. Other area employers include Tyson Foods, FedEx, Boone County, Wabsash, Pace Industries, West Rock Industries, Johnson Manufacturing, Claridge and FlexSteel.

NARMC Hospital, Mediquik and several local doctors provide medical care to the residents.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy numerous trails and camping areas in the region. Buffalo National River and Bull Shoals Lake offer many water recreational activities. Golfers have many courses to choose from including Harrison Country Club and Diamond City Country Club.

The residents and visitors gather annually to enjoy Crawdad Days, Harvest Homecoming, Elk Festival, and Turkey Trot.

North Arkansas College offers higher educationally opportunities.

The Board of Education consists of five members, elected to serve five-year terms. The incumbency of the members ranges from 0.5 to 13.5 years.

Board of Education

Bergman School District educates its 1,085 students in three

buildings, elementary (grades K-4), middle school (grades 5-8), and high

school (grades 9-12). The district has 172 staff members, 6

administrators, 88 certificated teachers, and 78 classified staff members.

High achieving students are challenged through the Gifted and

Talented Program.

High school students can earn college credits through a concurrent

credit program with North Arkansas College.

Students can participate in various extracurricular activities. Sports

include basketball, soccer, golf, track, tennis, cross country, softball,

baseball, volleyball, trap, archery and cheer. Performing arts offered are

band, choir, and drama. Clubs and organizations include FFA, FCCLA,

FBLA, Life Club, Key Club, Spanish Club, Art Club, Debate Club,

Student Council, and Rapid Response.

The assessed valuation for the district is $55,943,472. The operating

budget is $7,200,000-$9,000,000.

An application for superintendent/principal should include: ◼ A letter setting forth personal qualifications, experiences and reasons for interest in the position.

◼ A current résumé.

◼ A completed application form

◼ Reference letters, certificates and licenses, and academic transcripts from colleges/universities indicating degree(s).

Candidates are asked not to directly contact board members. Any effort to do so may eliminate them from consideration. Names of applicants will be held in strict confidence whenever possible; however, McPherson & Jacobson complies with individual states’ Freedom of Information laws. In the final process, the school board may visit the district where the candidate is employed, but will not proceed without the knowledge and consent of the candidate.

Selection Time Line

• Closing date for applications: December 18, 2018 (11:30 p.m. central time) • Board of Directors selects finalists to interview: January 17, 2019 • Interviews with the Board of Directors: January 21-24, 2019 • Selection of new Superintendent: January 31, 2019 • Start date: July 1, 2019
