From the President…. Happy Summer Everyone! I hope that everyone had a successful spring in your farming operations. At our farm, other than some short-lived rain events, we were glad to see the great weather for seeding and calving and I hope the rest of Canada was blessed with the same! If you have been following the news releases, you will see that we have another great crop of 2016 OYF honourees coming from the regions. Quebec and Ontario have yet to host their regional events in August and early September respectively and then our harvest will be complete. We all look forward to hearing their stories in Niagara Falls. Ontario has a great National Event planned for November 30th - Dec 4th for alumni in Niagara Falls. Make sure to get your registrations in, and hotel and travel booked. The earlier you book, the easier it is for the organizing committee to plan their venues. It is a great way to reconnect with alumni and meet our new honourees! Follow your heart to the Falls Speaking of re-connecting, summer is usually a time that families make some extra time to travel. If you have the chance or can create the opportunity, look up fellow OYF alumni when you are travelling across Canada. The OYF directory, Facebook, and Twitter (@CanadaOYF) are great ways to connect with alumni and make plans.

Message du president….. Bon été à tous! J’espère que vous avez eu un bon printemps dans vos exploitations agricoles. Dans notre ferme, à part quelques averses, nous étions fiers d’avoir du beau temps pour les semailles et le vêlage et j’espère qu’il en était de même dans le reste du Canada. J’ai fait le suivi des communiqués de presse et vous verrez que nous aurons encore une belle récolte de candidats JAÉ pour 2016 en provenance des régions. Le Québec et l’Ontario n’ont pas encore eu leurs concours régionaux qui auront lieu en août et au début de septembre respectivement. Après cela, notre récolte sera terminée. Nous avons tous hâte d’écouter leurs histoires à Niagara Falls. L’Ontario a organisé un excellent concours national qui aura lieu du 30 novembre au 4 décembre à Niagara Falls. Assurez-vous de vous inscrire et de réserver vos chambres d’hôtel et vos billets

d’avion. Plus vous vous inscrivez tôt, plus facile ce sera pour le comité organisateur de planifier les activités. C’est une bonne façon de renouer avec les anciens et de rencontrer les nouveaux candidats. Suivez votre cœur jusqu’aux chutes. Parlant de renouer, l’été est habituellement un moment où les familles prennent un peu de temps pour voyager. Si vous avez la chance ou si vous pouvez créer l’occasion, essayez de trouver des anciens JAÉ lors de vos voyages au Canada. Le répertoire des JAÉ, Facebook et Twitter sont de

bons moyens pour rencontrer des anciens et pour organiser des activités. L’été est une période occupée à la ferme, mais c’est aussi un moment particulier. Soyez prudent dans vos activités et profitez de l’été avec votre famille et vos amis! On se voit à Niagara Falls!

2016 National Event in Niagara Falls, ON

The Ontario alumni would like to welcome Canada to Niagara Falls from Wednesday, November 30 to Sunday, December 4. This year’s National Event will not only highlight Canada’s best young farmers but it will also prove to a great holiday destination whether it be for 3 days or a week. There is so much to see & do in “The Falls” that we can’t possibly show it all to you. Our host hotel, the Hilton Fallsview, overlooks the Falls and is located in the heart of the entertainment district. Breathtaking views will start and end your day with breakfast in The Watermark restaurant and in the hospitality suite. Wednesday will be free time for the alumni all day. The hospitality room will be open for registration, Niagara Falls attraction info and “meet & greet”. Conference kick off will be at 4:30 with Komie from Bayer giving us a lighthearted session on life relationships with our spouse and/or business partners. Dinner that evening will be at the amazing Brassa Brazilian Steakhouse located right in the Hilton. Thursday morning while the judges and the National Board are hard at work, the alumni can relax with 3 options. 1. Take a bus to historic Niagara-on-the-Lake for self-guided sightseeing and shopping; 2. Take a bus to the Welland Canal & Museum – Canada’s waterway from Thunder Bay to the St. Lawrence; or 3. Free time in The Falls with lots to do within walking distance of the hotel. We will all meet for lunch at John Deere’s Canadian headquarters where we will have a chance to interact with staff as well as tour their facilities. In the afternoon, we’ll visit Vineland Research Station and end our day at the Canadian Food & Wine Institute located at Niagara College. Here we will sample beer & wine made by the students and finish with a dinner prepared for us by student chefs. Friday morning, we’ll start our day again on the 32nd floor of the Hilton overlooking the Falls at the Watermark restaurant. For the Forum, our own,

Ang Fox (MB 2008) and Maggie van Camp will take us on an emotional journey through their presentation of the “Honey, I Love You List”. Thanks to BDO for putting this together. After lunch, the highlight of the National Event will be the honouree presentations followed by the Gala Banquet in the evening to cap off the day with the announcement of our 2016 OYF winners. Saturday morning, we’ll take care of business with our Annual General Meeting and have Kim McConnell lead us on a brainstorming session to examine how we can attract more nominees at the regional level. Then we are onto the buses for a “Vine to Wine” day. We’ll tour Vinetech, Wes & Briar Wiens farm (ON 2011) to learn about grapevine propagation, vineyards and several wineries ranging in size from small to large scale. We’ll finish the day with an Ontario alumni produced meal. The great thing about Niagara is that everything is very close so our bus rides shouldn’t be longer than 20 minutes. And it goes without saying that we’ll end each night in the hospitality suite. This year due to the distance from Toronto Pearson Airport to Niagara Falls we have arranged with Niagara Airbus to provide a shuttle service to the hotel. This is NOT included in your registration as not everyone will be using this service. The cost of the shuttle will be $70/person for the round trip. Please indicate on the registration form if you want to use this service and we will arrange to have Niagara airbus pick you up. Travel time from the airport to the hotel will be an hour and half so please take that into consideration when you book your flights. We promise that’ll be the longest bus ride of the event! We are able to offer a small reduction on the registration fee for children 12 and under this year, the hotel has a great pool area. We are also looking into having a room for the children to have their own pizza party during the Banquet – we’ll keep you updated on that.

Le concours national de cette année soulignera non seulement les meilleurs agriculteurs du Canada, mais ce sera aussi une magnifique destination de vacances, que ce soit pour trois jours ou une semaine. Il y a tellement de choses à voir et à faire « aux Chutes » que nous ne pouvons possiblement pas tout vous montrer. Notre hôtel, le Hilton Fallsview, surplombe les chutes et il est situé au cœur du district de divertissement. Des vues à couper le souffle commenceront votre journée au restaurant The Watermark et la finiront dans la suite de réception. Le mercredi sera une journée libre pour tous les anciens. La salle de réception sera ouverte pour les inscriptions, pour obtenir des renseignements sur Niagara Falls et pour une séance d’accueil. La conférence commencera à 16 h 30 avec Komie, de Bayer, qui nous fera une présentation joviale sur les relations avec nos conjoint(e)s ou nos partenaires d’affaires. Le souper aura lieu à l’extraordinaire restaurant Brassa Brazilian Steakhouse, qui est situé dans l’hôtel. Le jeudi matin, pendant que les juges et le conseil d’administration seront au travail, les anciens auront trois options pour relaxer. 1. Puis, nous monterons à bord des autobus pour une journée « De la vigne au vin ». Rapport des regions…….. BC/Yukon: Things have been fairly quiet since our Regional Event in January where Jewel & Brian Pauls became our 2016 honorees for our region. We have had a full board changeover and new members are as follows: Chair – Troy Harker (alumni 2013) Vice Chair – Kevin Klippenstein (alumni 2011) Regional Coordinator – Heather Carriere zamacaconsulting@gmail.com (effective June 01 2016) Sponsorship – Derek Janzen Nominations – Lydia Ryall Jen Woike has retired from sitting as Regional Coordinator for 2015- present and being board Chair 2013-2014. We are having a regional summer get together at the farm of the 2016 honourees Brian & Jewel - BEERBQ - this will be held where they grow some hops and are building a processing plant on July 16. It will be an event where there are 6-12 bbq masters and 6-12 breweries in a form of competition, there will be over 700 guests to this event and we hope to spur up lots of support and talk about OYF. We hope to have lots of alumni , sponsors and friends of OYF out to this event as well. We are busy in BC planning for the 2018 Regional Event – lots of details to come soon.

Colombie-Britannique / Yukon : C’est plutôt tranquille depuis notre concours régional de janvier quand Jewel et Brian Paul ont été nommés les lauréats de 2016 pour notre région. Il y a eu un changement complet du conseil d’administration et les nouveaux membres sont les suivants : Président : Troy Harker (lauréat 2013)

Nous aurons une réunion estivale à la ferme de lauréats de 2016 Brian et Jewel le 16 juillet. BièreBQ – c’est là qu’ils produisent du houblon et qu’ils sont en train de construire une usine de transformation. Lors de cette activité, il y aura de 6 à 12 maîtres BBQ et de 6 à 16 brasseries en compétition. Il y aura plus de 700 invités pour l’occasion et nous espérons obtenir du soutien et promouvoir les JAÉ. Nous espérons que de nombreux anciens lauréats, commanditaires et amis des JAÉ seront aussi présents. En Colombie-Britannique, nous nous préparons pour le concours régional de 2017. Alberta/NWT: On the down slide from the production of hosting the 2015 National Event, the committee and our volunteers were all very pleased with the turnout, activities, tours and of course the judging of the National Honourees. The host hotel did a fabulous job in making sure the event went very smoothly and that last minute issues became a seamless tasks. Alberta held the regional event this year in Banff on Feb. 4&5 where Shane and Kristen Schooten were chosen as this years winners. they operate a large feed lot near Diamond City which is near Lethbridge. Our region is exploring new sponsors for the upcoming year of 2017 and are delighted with new ideas and events that we will be doing in February in Olds, AB.

Upcoming events for our region this summer include a semi-annual event at one of our Alumni locations and we are currently working on these details. We will again have a physical semi-annual gathering/meeting near the home of our current winner this fall in October.

Alberta / T.N.-O. : Après avoir organisé le concours national de 2015, les membres du comité et les bénévoles sont très satisfaits de la participation, des activités, des visites et, bien entendu, du choix des lauréats nationaux. L’hôtel a fait un excellent travail pour s’assurer que tout marchait comme sur des roulettes et que les problèmes de dernière minute deviennent faciles à régler. Le concours régional de l’Alberta de cette année a eu lieu à Banff le 4 et 5 février. Shane et Kristen Schooten ont été choisis les lauréats de cette année. Ils exploitent un gros parc d’engraissement près de Diamond City, dans la région de Lethbridge. Notre région est à la recherche de nouveaux commanditaires pour 2017 et nous sommes ravis des nouvelles idées et activités mises de l’avant pour février à Olds, en Alberta. Les activités à venir pour notre région cet été comprennent une rencontre semi-annuelle à la ferme d’un de nos anciens et nous sommes en train de finaliser les détails. Nous aurons une réunion/assemblée semi-annuelle près de la résidence des lauréats actuels en octobre.

Saskatchewan: Our regional event was held in conjunction with the Farm Progress Show in Regina on June 16-17, 2016. We congratulate our two nominee couples, Andrew and Laura VanderKooi of Legend Dairy from Dalmeny, SK and Dan and Chelsea Erlandson of Spring Creek Garden, Outlook, SK, for competing in our regional OYF this year. We would like to

congratulate Dan and Chelsea Erlandson as our 2016 honourees. They are excited to be representing our province at the nationals in Niagara Falls. Dan and Chelsea run a vegetable farm and market their produce through 5 farmers markets and also through the “eat local program” through the Federated Cooperatives Ltd. We also had the privilege of handing out a Canada Outstanding Young Farmer’s memorial scholarship, to Jenny Markewich, of Hafford, SK, who also was in attendance at our awards banquet. She is enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan in the agronomy program. We would like to thank our many sponsors for their ongoing support of our program, and would like to extend a hearty welcome to our 8 new sponsors who have joined us this year. We would especially like to thank our charter sponsors, FCC, FCL, and JayDee AgTech, for their support and help to our program. Our banquet hall was again filled with about 170 excited alumni, from both Saskatchewan and neighbouring provinces, and sponsors, to enjoy a great meal, and to see who would win the title of Saskatchewan Outstanding Young Farmer’s. We were also honoured, once again, to hear from our Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart, who was also in attendance at our banquet. Our executive is undergoing some changes this year, with Franck Groeneweg stepping up as our chair, Chad Krikau being elected to vice chair, and Ebony Prosko as our new treasurer. Rhonda Mayerle remains on the executive as our Social Coordinator, and Elaine Pruim as the Regional Coordinator. We would like to extend our thanks to Kris Mayerle (outgoing chair) and Pam Possberg (outgoing treasurer) for their many years of service to our provincial program. We would like to wish the provincial honourees all the best as they prepare for Nationals, and we look forward to seeing many of you at the national event in November!

Saskatchewan: Notre concours régional a eu lieu conjointement avec le Farm Progress Show à Regina le 16 et 17 juin 2016. Nous remercions nos deux couples de candidats, Andrew et Laura VanderKooi de Legend Dairy à Dalmeny ainsi que Dan et Chelsea Erlandson de Spring Creek Garden à Outlook d’avoir participer à notre concours régional des JAÉ de cette année. Nous félicitons Dan et Chelsea Erlandson, les lauréats de 2016. Ils ont hâte de représenter notre province au concours national à Niagara Falls. Dan et Chelsea exploitent une ferme maraîchère et commercialisent leurs produits par l’entremise de cinq marchés fermiers et aussi par l’entremise du programme « Manger localement » de la Coopérative fédérée. Nous avons eu aussi le privilège de remettre une bourse d’études commémorative des Jeunes agriculteurs d’élite du Canada à Jenny Markewich, de Hafford, qui était aussi présente au gala de remise de prix. Elle est inscrite au programme d’agronomie de l’Université de la Saskatchewan. Nous aimerions également remercier nos nombreux commanditaires pour leur soutien continu de notre concours et nous voulons accueillir chaleureusement nos huit nouveaux commanditaires qui se sont joints à nous cette année. Nous voudrions remercier particulièrement nos commanditaires principaux : FAC, FCL et JayDee AgTech pour leur soutien et leur aide à notre concours. Notre salle de banquet était pleine de nouveau, car 170 anciens lauréats, de la Saskatchewan et des provinces avoisinantes, et des commanditaires se sont réunis pour savourer un délicieux repas et pour voir qui allait gagner le titre de Jeunes agriculteurs d’élite de la Saskatchewan. Nous avions aussi l’honneur de compter sur la présence de notre ministre de l’Agriculture Lyle Stewart lors de notre banquet.

Il y a eu des changements au sein de notre exécutif cette année, car Franck Groenweg est maintenant président, Chad Kribau est vice-président et Ebony Prosko est trésorière. Rhonda Mayerle demeure en poste comme coordinatrice sociale et Elaine Pruim comme coordinatrice régionale. Nous voudrions remercier Kris Mayerle (président sortant) et Pam Possberg (trésorière sortante) pour leurs nombreuses années de service pour notre concours régional. Nous voulons souhaiter la meilleure des chances à nos lauréats provinciaux lors du concours national et nous avons hâte de voir plusieurs d’entre vous au concours national en novembre.

Quebec : Here in Quebec, we are busy preparing our August 31st Gala at the Drummondville Conference Centre. In our budget for sponsors, we exceeded our $3000 objective. However, we had problems getting candidates. At the deadline, we only had one registration. We worked hard and even did some head hunting and ended up with three candidates. To us, the finalists are the highlight of our gala. It is very, very important to have at least three candidates.

New this year and just finalized, the Quebec winners will receive a prize worth $7000. The prize is a training program in farm entrepreneurship organized by Laval University in Quebec City and sponsored jointly by Expo Champs and Fondation Jefo. We think that the value of the prize will help us get more candidates in the future. Our next activity is our summer picnic on July 6th. There will be an executive committee meeting, a supper and social activities. The picnic will take place at Dany Mayrand and Monia Grenier’s (2009) farm. Have a nice summer.

Québec: Pour nous au Québec, nous sommes en préparation pour notre Gala le mercredi 31 août au Centre des Congrès à Drummondville. Dans notre budget, pour les commanditaires, nous avons dépassé nos objectifs de 3000$. Cependant la difficulté as été pour la recherche de candidats. A la date prévu, nous avions seulement une inscription. Nous avons travaillé très fort et même chassée des têtes. Finalement, nous aurons 3 candidats. Pour nous, le spectacle lors de notre gala, se sont nos finalistes...il est très très important d'avoir au moins 3 candidats. Chose nouvelle cette année, qui viens de ce conclure, nous aurons un prix d'une valeur de 7000$ pour le grand gagnant au Québec. Il s'agit d'une inscription à une formation en entrepreneurship agricole, organisée par l université Laval de Québec. Une commandite conjointe d Expo Champs et Fondation Jefo. Nous pensons que la valeur du prix, pourra aider à trouver de nouvelle inscriptions... Notre prochaine activité est le pique-nique d'été le 6 juillet prochain. Nous aurons une réunion du comité exécutif, un souper et des activités sociales. L'activité aura lieu chez Dany Mayrand et Monia Grenier (2009). Je vous souhaite une bonne été!

Atlantic: Summer has finally arrived here in Atlantic! Our spring has been cool and windy so the warm temperatures are very welcoming. The Atlantic committee are "conferencing" about our plans for the 2017 event which will be held in Moncton, NB March 9, 10th and 11th. We have our alumni Summer BBQ planned for July 23rd starting at 2pm at the home of Brian and Edna Newcombe's. We are looking forward to celebrating the local harvest with Alumni and friends. I wish everyone a wonderful summer filled with lots memory making moments and success!

l’Atlantique : L’été est finalement arrivé ici en Atlantique. Notre printemps a été frais et venteux, le temps chaud est donc bien accueilli. Le comité de l’Atlantique organise des conférences téléphones pour préparer le concours de 2017 qui aura lieu à Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, du 9 au 11 mars. Notre barbecue estival des anciens est prévu pour le 23 juillet à 14 heures à la résidence de Brian et Edna Newcombe. Nous avons hâte de célébrer la récolte locale avec les anciens et les amis. Developing the Next Agricultural Policy Framework Federal, provincial and territorial governments are currently working together to develop the next agricultural policy framework to launch April 1, 2018. Agricultural policy frameworks have proven to be an effective way to coordinate Canada’s federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) policies and programs for over 15 years. Frameworks have increasingly focused on providing the tools and support to enable a competitive, innovative and environmentally sustainable agriculture and agri-food sector. Collaboration between FPT governments has been key in the evolution towards providing the investments and flexibility to partner with industry to meet the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. Governments are now asking for feedback to better understand what parts of the current framework,Growing Forward 2 (GF2), are working well and what challenges could be addressed for the next framework.

Élaboration du prochain cadre stratégique agricole Les gouvernements fédéral, provinciaux et territoriaux travaillent actuellement ensemble pour élaborer le prochain cadre stratégique agricole, prévu pour le 1er avril 2018. Les cadres stratégiques agricoles se sont avérés être un moyen efficace de coordonner les politiques et les programmes fédéraux, provinciaux

et territoriaux (FPT) depuis plus de 15 ans. Les cadres stratégiques ont de plus en plus mis l’accent sur la fourniture d’outils et de soutien pour favoriser un secteur agricole et agroalimentaire concurrentiel, innovateur et écologiquement durable. La collaboration entre les gouvernements FPT a joué un rôle clé dans l’évolution vers la fourniture d’investissements et de la flexibilité pour former des partenariats avec l’industrie pour affronter les défis et tirer profit des occasions dans le secteur. Les gouvernements voudraient maintenant avoir des commentaires pour mieux comprendre quelles parties du cadre actuel Cultivons l’avenir 2 (CA2) fonctionnent bien et quels défis devraient être abordés pour le prochain cadre stratégique.

English Only-que l'anglais AME is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2016 Robert Ross Memorial Scholarships for the 2017 CTEAM program. Robert (Bob) Ross was instrumental in guiding CTEAM, inspiring and encouraging farm management excellence across Canada through his leadership and passion for the agricultural community. Bob fought a courageous battle with cancer, passing in March 2014. As a tribute to his passion, leadership and legacy, Agri-Food Management Excellence, Farm Management Canada, Family Farms Group and the Ross Family, along with an additional private contributor this year, will be rewarding two farmers with the opportunity to participate in the CTEAM program and continue on a path towards excellence, as inspired by Canada’s leading experts and a one-of-a-kind support network of peers and colleagues. Two scholarships of $8250 CDN will be awarded, to be applied towards CTEAM tuition and travel expenses. The deadline to apply is September 15, 2016. The 2016 Hosting committee is working hard to bring you a revised National Event format which we hope will bring more people out to enjoy the beautiful Niagara Falls Region.
