OORAH! After 25 years, Austin Chapter won the supremely prestigious,
long awaited, elusive GOLDEN GAVEL!
I couldn’t be more proud of
our leadership team. It takes
a village of volunteers to raise
a chapter up to this level of
excellence. There are so
many great and deserving
chapters in our region; it is
an extra special honor for our
chapter to be selected as
Numero Uno!
Chapter leadership also won, best Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA) - Katie Klassen (HTS) and
Phil Wood (Trane), best Government Advocacy - Jon-Erik Johnson (TAS), Golden Ribbon in
History—Randy Schrecengost (Stanley Consultants), Jack Thompson Award/best Chapter
President & best President message—Vanessa Freidberg (Siemens) and a ton of other awards for
being great in all facets. Membership Promotions—Ryan McLagan (TAS) & Research
Promotions—Steve Hansen (DPR) for this year will be awarded at next CRC in Houston April
2020.
After such an amazing year, this is sadly our final month together during my presidential term.
This is why I am excited for this month’s presentation from one of my favorite extraordinary
people, Mick Schwedler. He’ll be speaking on one of the biggest topics that affect us in Texas,
High Performance Chilled Water Systems. No matter the vertical or job function, almost anyone
would enjoy and learn from attending our meeting this May.
Weather it is your 1st meeting, or your 100th meeting, please plan to hang around and celebrate
at the end of this session since we’ll have two months off in June and July for leadership
planning.
In good musical fun and as tribute to all the hard work from our team, a final celebratory meme.
Cheers to a fantastic year with outstanding performance from an amazing group of people. May
the “Connections Through People” we’ve made this year, pay dividends for many years to come.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Sincerely, Vanessa J Freidberg

Well Austin Chapter! What a great year thus far, this however will be the last formal Chapter
meeting for the 2018-2019 year. I have appreciated the opportunity to serve as the Vice President of
the chapter, planning each chapter meeting. I hope you have found each meeting to be impactful
in its own way.
We are always looking for meeting ideas, so if you have an idea, now is the time to let us know.
Over the summer we will be planning out the meetings for the next year, please contact Stuart
Bloomquist with any ideas you may have.
During this last meeting, we will be having our officer inductions right at 5:30 pm. Following the
inductions, we will have a technical session from Randy Schrecengost on an update to our chapter
history. We have a lot to fit into our meeting this month so please plan to be on time, if not, early.
I look forward to seeing you all there at our last meeting!
Technical Presentation: Chapter History by Randy Schrecengost, P.E.—Stanley Consulting
Engineers
Main Presentation: High Performance Chilled Water Systems By Mick Schwedler, P.E. —
Ingersoll Rand.
Chilled water systems have been used for more than 70 years. During that time, there has been a consistent effort by manufacturers and system designers to develop equipment, design strategies and control methods that result in the highest performing chilled water systems possible. This presentation discusses system configurations, design parameters and system control techniques that can help owners reduce chilled water system operating costs and environmental impact.

AND THE AWARDS KEEP RAINING ON AUSTIN CHAPTER!!!
ASHRAE Honors and Awards (Lou Flagg Historical Award)
ASHRAE’s Honors and Awards program recognizes dedicated ASHRAE Members who give freely of
their time and expertise to fulfill the Society’s mission of advancing the arts and sciences of HVAC&R
to serve humanity and provide a sustainable world.
ASHRAE's awards fall into one of six categories: Personal Honors, Personal
Awards for General Society Activities, Personal Awards for Specific Society
Activities, Paper Awards, Society Awards to Groups or Chapters; and, Chap-
ter and Regional Awards.
The Society’s 2019 Lou Flagg Historical Award recipient is yours truly. Regard-
less of the title of this article, I am truly humbled for this award. Many of you
have seen the material I’ve been putting together for the Austin Chapter History, and that is for what
I won the award.
The Lou Flagg Historical Gold Ribbon Award was approved by the ASHRAE Board of Directors in
June 2002 “to recognize a Chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on out-
standing historical projects or persons related to HVAC&R.” The name of the award was changed to
the Lou Flagg Historical Award in June 2003. The award consists of a plaque, lapel pin and transpor-
tation expenses to the Society Annual Meeting.
Respectfully Submitted,
Randy Schrecengost, Historian
