2020 Key School Priorities: Improving student outcomes for all students, through developing an inclusive culture that promotes life-long learning. Dear Families, The last fortnight has been difficult and filled with uncertainty about the future. We have moved towards social distancing, empty supermarket shelves and financial strain within our community. During this time, it is important to remember good hand washing and keeping the 1.5m social distance. Although it is not as easy to maintain face to face contact with our friends and families, we can still offer support and encouragement to others through a simple wave to our neighbour, keeping in contact with others through phone or social media. Wouldnt it be lovely people opened their mail box and found a handwritten letter from a loved one? I challenge each and everyone of our school and wider community to take the time to write a letter or make a card and post it to a relative or friend! Lets stay positive and keep our wonderful community in good spirits over the next few weeks. Attendance As the last fortnight has unfolded, there have been questions about student attendance. Mr Scott Morrison, our Prime Minister has stated that schools will remain open and are safe places to be, with our hygiene and healthy practices in line with our Department and governments expectations. If parents choose to keep their children at home, that decision will be supported by the school. Parents are responsible for their childs learning and wellbeing at home, and the school has and will continue to provide resources and curriculum. Work provided will need to be dated and returned to assist with the next steps of learning for all students. As always I am available by phone to help with the delivery of learning at home and I will be checking in with parents regularly. Building Update The installation of our new building has moved along at a cracking pace. A couple of finishing off jobs will see us with the keys to our new all access toilet block. Election 2020 The election scheduled for Saturday 28th March will go ahead and Kalamia will be open as a polling booth. I have received notifications that the school will be thoroughly cleaned and ready for use by staff and students on Monday 30th March. Unfortunately, due to the recent restrictions as part of COVID-19, the P&C will not be holding a bake sale or sausage sizzle on Saturday. Thank you to those parents who were ready, willing and able to support our fundraising events. Kind regards Renee Cross PRINCIPAL Lilliesmere Road AYR QLD 4807 Postal Address: P.O. Continuity of Learning I contacted parents during the week to gauge how I was going to deliver the Australian Curriculum to our students effectively and at the same time supporting our parents. I came up with two options: paper based learning and online learning. Both have their benefits and challenges Students will be provided with paper based materials with additional activities and extension provided online. Each option is outlined below and at no time will students be disadvantaged using either option for their learning. PAPER BASED LEARNING: 2 week blocks of learning - English, Mathematics, Science and

HEALTH & WELL BEING

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) Queensland Health is continuing to work with the Australian Border Force to screen anyone who returns to Australia from overseas for symptoms of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and provide them with information on self-quarantine.

If you have been overseas in the last 14 days and are feeling unwell, call your doctor immediately.

If you have been overseas and are feeling well, you need to self-quarantine for 14 days from the date you arrived in Australia.

You must also self-quarantine if you have been in close contact with someone who already has novel coronavirus (COVID-19). While you’re self-quarantining, if you start to feel unwell and develop any symptoms at all, but especially a fever or shortness of breath, a cough or a respiratory illness, you should seek immediate medical attention. Call ahead to your GP and tell them your travel history so they can prepare for your visit.

For more information, visit the Australian Government website.

What does self-quarantine mean? Self-quarantine means staying in your home, hotel room or provided accommodation, and not leaving for the period you are required to quarantine. Only people who usually live in the household should be in the home. Do not allow visitors into the home.

Does this mean my family or other people I live with need to self-quarantine? The rest of your household does not need to self-quarantine if you stay away from others in your home. They are only required to self-quarantine if they meet one of the criteria for self-quarantine outlined above.

As much as possible, you should:

stay in a room away from others

sleep in a separate bedroom

use a separate bathroom Also, don't allow visitors.

Practice good hygiene and maintain a minimum of 1.5 metres distance.

Vulnerable people, like those over the age of 60 with chronic disease, should stay somewhere else.

See more information about self-quarantine (PDF) from the Australian Government.

How do I get things I need while in self-quarantine? Community recovery support and assistance is available through the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, for Queenslanders in self-quarantine due to COVID19. If you require assistance please call the Community Recovery hotline 1800 173 349.

The Queensland Government is also partnering with the Australian Red Cross, to ensure people have access to support during their period of self-quarantine. This service includes a regular telephone call to check-in on the person’s wellbeing and to identify any practical support they may need help with.

People who are self-quarantined must call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for further advice and to register for support. Staff at 13 HEALTH can connect people through to a local public health unit and other health support services.

What happens when I end my 14 days of self-quarantine?

If you have self-quarantined for 14 days without any symptoms, you are free to go about your usual activities and return to work, school, childcare, TAFE and university.

If you require a medical certificate, you will need to see a GP.

You should seek medical attention immediately if you develop symptoms while in self-quarantine.

What happens to those who do not comply with self-quarantine orders?

The health and wellbeing of Queenslanders is our top priority, and we know Queenslanders are always supportive of measures that protect the community.

Queensland Health is issuing notices to people who have travelled to at-risk areas, or who have been in contact with a confirmed case, that requests them to voluntarily quarantine themselves.

If a person is suspected to have breached the notice they had voluntarily agreed to, we'll initially work closely with the person to ensure they not only understand their obligations, but also the importance and seriousness of self-quarantine under the current global circumstances.

There are additional compliance measures available to Queensland Health under the Public Health Act 2005, and any further failure to comply may be subject to enforced quarantine and receiving fines of up to $13,345 and other penalties.

HEAR YE! HEAR YE!—WE HAVE NEWS

Library day is on Thursday. The students have their very own red library bag to keep

library books safe and it is easy to identify. Due to the current social distancing and restrictions, please be advised that Playgroup will

be postponed until further notice. Miss Christina is very disappointed but is looking forward to working with our little people next term. If you know of any friends, family or neighbours who have young children, encourage them to come along to our Playgroup.

Kalamia SS is open on Election Day! You can skip the waiting lines and vote at our

school. Unfortunately there won't be the usual cake stall and BBQ due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Queensland State Schools remain open! Our staff are well and healthy and taking every

precaution to ensure students have a safe environment to continue their learning. Learning materials are available for students at the school. If parents have chosen to

keep their children at home, they are responsible for their child’s learning. Booklets and resources have been collated to support their child’s learning. Programs and websites are also available for online learning.
