While there are several other events during the school year which are important for specific groups of students first day at high school; sports carnivals; Formal and Graduation; exam blocks; excursions and overseas trip there is nothing which engages the whole community so much as the Awards Evening. And engagement was the theme of the evening, from the opening music, provided by a combined staff and student Stage Band, to the wonderfully engaging solos dance performance by Alannah Caneris. The community was fully represented with an Aboriginal welcome dance, a celebration of Polynesian culture and the high performance extension dance troupe all excelling. Most of the 20 nationalities here at school were represented on stage as performers of recipients of awards and/or prizes. It was wonderful to see so many families here supporting their students too. Parental engagement was the message of my presentation, and while I was probably preaching to the converted by talking to the parents who were there, I am confident that my message will reach home to many other families as well. Research clearly indicates the importance of a productive partnership between school and home. A really positive two-way relationship can result in a whole grade improvement in academic results over a year – that can be the difference between a fail and a pass, or a Silver and Gold certificate. A three way partnership between parent, student and teacher is even better, so please do not hesitate to contact any of my staff if you have a concern. My thanks to all those who worked so hard to make the evening a success, and congratulations to all those who received awards. I also had many compliments of the SRC who hosted the evening. A number of parents who have attended several of these events over the years commented that the clarity and pace of their speeches were the best they had experienced; and I agree. One of the special moments of the awards Evening is the announcement of the Junior and Senior Dux, and the naming of next year’s student leaders. Special congratulations to those students – Charlie Hargreaves [Junior Dux] and Mrinal Unuth [Senior Dux]. The senior SRC is listed below. I look forward to working with then in 2016. I should also make mention of the two staff award winners – Helen Ritson, winner of the Excellence in Teaching Award and Denise Gibson, this year’s recipient of the Staff Excellence Award. Year 12 exam block begins on Monday, Graduation is on Friday, 20 November and the year 11s and 10s finish on Friday, 27 November. Thank you for your partnership with the school, and ensuring that your senior students remain engaged right up until the final day. 2016 Student Leaders School Captains – Simone Lauaki and Ben Fisher School Vice-Captains Molly Mackay and Daniel Westphal Sporting Prefects – Ebony Jackson and Ronaldo Mulitalo Cultural Prefect – Joseph Kirby Events Prefect – Ben Willett Academic Prefect – Maddison Bailey Indigenous Prefects – Atahnee Simpson and Roesha Shields Atahnee will also act as the Marketing and Publicity prefect Simone and Ronaldo will also act as Polynesian leaders House Captains Sam Butler-Graham [Moran] Mattinson Hunt [O’Hanlon]

I had the privilege of taking 10 students and 2 staff, DonnaGoodman and Jason Moore, to Kowanyama for a week. Weflew to Cairns then had a 9 hour 4wd bus ride to Kowanyama. We stayed at the school and had the honour of going out tocountry with the Elders. We all learnt so much about how theylive in an Aboriginal community.

One of the students Atahnee Simpson wrote thisabout our adventure.

This experience has been very rewarding for each and everyone of us. Some of us have never been on a plane or evenbeen out of Ipswich. The bus journey to Kowanyama was anexperience that we will never forget. (Corrugated roads and bulldust). It was very enjoyable, very bumpy, very dirty and scary.

On arrival we had the best welcome ever from Principal NicoleSherlock and her staff. We would like to thank Miss Nicole andthe whole staff and school for everything they did for us. Wefelt like we were at home. Ipswich State High School studentsinteracted every day with the students from Kowanyama StateSchool.

We visited the museum were we learnt about the dilly bag andhow it was made. We then visited Shelfo where we swam withthe locals in one of the local creeks. We then were invited byone of the Traditional owners Elders to visit their homelandat Yangrr Station and Thilpi Homeland. They took us to theMitchell River where we were blessed and then we went fishingand some of us caught catfish, dew fish and Barracuda. Wethen cooked it all on the hot coals and ate it. The Elders madedamper and wrapped it in alfoil and put it on the hot coals tocook, they also wrapped one of the dampers in cabbage treeleaves and put it on the coals. It was so tasty. We then learnt

how to make dilly bags from the cabbage tree leaves we hadto strip them and then plait them. The girls got painted up bysome of the local girls from rock ochre from the land.

On Thilpi Homeland with the Traditional owners, we sawcrocodiles in the creeks then went on to see where thecrocodiles rest of the night time, and where they lay their eggs.Again we learnt so much from the Traditional owners of theland.

We then had a day where we all visited class room to see howthey are taught and how they learn. We had the best time andenjoyed everything that was taught to us.

THIS TRIP WAS AN EXPERIENCE OF A LIFE TIME.

What is BPoint?

BPoint is a new online payment facility which can be accessedby customers and parents via weblink,https://www.bpoint.com.au/Payments/dete. This link is on thebottom of invoices.

Payments made through BPoint require a valid invoicenumber and customer reference number (CRN) which arelocated on the bottom left hand side of our school invoices andstatements. It is important that this information is provided sothat the payment will be automatically matched to the invoice.

ISHS P & C AssociationAt our last P&C meeting the P&C discussed the parentcontribution we ask families to contribute.

We understand that finding even $25 per family can be difficulton the tight budgets most of us are on. So, instead we ask thatyou find just $5 per term and contribute it toward the P&C.With approximately 800 families in the school that’s $4000 perterm to help pay for extras.

At the moment our goal is to wrap the new school bus so whenit is being used to take our kids to events it very clearly showsthe pride we have in our school.

Let’s wrap the bus!
