ISSUE 6– Friday 13 April 2018
A Western Australian Independent Public School, serving the community of Falcon for 25 Years (1990-2015) PRINCIPAL – Mr Warren Bachman
From the Principal’s Desk
School will close at 2:50pm today for the two week holiday period. School will resume for staff and students on Monday 30 April 2018. On behalf of the staff I wish all students and their families a safe and restful holiday. I am pleased to advise that the Kindergarten
Jellyfish Group will continue for the remainder of the year with Mrs Kathryn Chaudhry as their teacher. Parents of Pelican and Penguin Kindergarten students should have received a revised roster for Term 2 highlighting the rotation for Wednesday’s program. Anyone assisting in the classroom other than a parent or full time carer and over 18 must complete a Working with Children Check (volunteer). Forms are available from the post office or administration and need to be countersigned by the school Principal. NAPLAN (National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy) is scheduled for students in Year 3 and Year 5 between Tuesday 15 May and Friday 18 May. Please ensure you child is present on these days. WARATAH is offering Vacation Care these holidays at competitive prices. Please ring Leigh Metcalf on 0414 535 685 for further information. Well done to Hunter Booth and Binti Christensen who are the school representatives on the Mandurah Junior Council. Congratulations to Binti for being voted Deputy Mayor of the Mandurah Junior Council! Each year we ask parents to complete a range of forms which is both time consuming for the parents and the school. We are trying to simplify this process by asking parents to give initial approval before keeping us updated if they change their mind (eg. Internet Access Permission, Imagery). Champion Life is coming to Year 4 at Falcon Primary School in Term 2. What is Champion Life? An Australian developed online resource for schools that motivates and nurtures young Australians to form lifelong health and fitness habits.

Attendance
Unauthorised Absences— The Telethon Institute for Child Health Research released the Attendance and Educational Outcomes: Every Day Counts paper in 2013. A key finding of the paper was that unauthorised absences are more strongly associated with achievement than authorised absences. Unauthorised absences had a significantly stronger association with achievement than authorised absences, and this was seen consistently in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Even small amounts of unauthorised absence from school were associated with substantial falls in average NAPLAN test scores. The paper also advises that reducing unauthorised absences should be the key focus of attendance strategies.
Falcon Primary School is currently addressing this issue to reduce the number of unauthorised absences across the school.
How can you help?
Let your child’s classroom teacher know if your child is away via the student diary pages 120 & 121.
Let your child’s classroom teacher know verbally.
SMS the school on 0437 159 606 (student
name and reason). This is the preferred method for advising the school if your child is going to be absent.
Respond to the text SMS message from the school regarding non attendance. These are sent out at 9:45am and 1.45 daily to families who have a child absent from school without a reason.
Return absence from school letters that are sent out weekly to families with a child/ren with unauthorised absences to class teachers with a reason.

Story Dogs When children read to a
dog, the outcomes are
amazing! It is a non-
judgemental setting, the
children's focus
improves, their literacy
skills increase and their
confidence soars. The
accepting, loving nature of dogs gives this program its
magic and helps children relax, open up, try harder and
have fun while reading to a friendly, calm dog.
This program has been introduced to the Year 2
students at Falcon PS this year and is proving a very
successful initiative through the motivation and
confidence it has already developed in our children.
To support this initiative, students are invited to
dress up in ORANGE on Friday 4 May (Term 2 Week
1) and donate a gold coin.
By donating with a gold coin on the day, cheque, direct
debit or credit card, you will help Story Dogs continue
helping children learn to read across Australia. For
