Dear WInS Community,
More Out and About in the Community
On Friday 27th October our Early Years students enjoyed an informed trip around Bomba, our local fire
station, as part of their studies on “Transport and Occupations”.
The students had a brilliant time. A huge thank you to our brave local fire fighters, and also congratulations
to our Early Years teachers and staff for organising such an amazing experience for our young learners.

More Love from our Army Friends
Once again we are indebted to our army friends for providing a special transport trip for our Early Years
students. As they conclude their topic of “Professions and Transport” they provided our young friends
with a short joy ride in their army truck around the school compound. The kids loved the experience!
Out and About – Penang
Our Year 10 students visited Penang between Friday 3rd and Tuesday 7th. Despite the extensive flooding,
all the students loved the visit.
A huge thank you to all the accompanying teachers – Ms Fiona, Mr Ray and Mr Bong.
Out and About – Upper Primary (by Mr Darmel)
Sometimes our children need ‘something’, some kind of a spark, something new and different,
something that doesn't necessarily involve pencils and paper, something that gets their bodies
moving and spirits refreshed. Sometimes they need a field-trip!
The Primary 4/5 and 6 Classes have forayed into an exciting trip where they had the opportunity
to prepare their own sushi delights at Sushi King, learn and interact with the children with special
needs at the Sibu Agape Centre and learn more about Sarawakian culture in the Sibu Heritage
Museum. The children didn’t only learn significant information, of equally important is on how
they fostered teamwork, friendship and respect for others.
Words from our primary students:
“My visit to Agape Centre has made me realise how fortunate I am and should never take for granted
what I have. Treating others with kindness and respect is very important. With kindness, I will never go
wrong!”-Justin Chua Soon Jie, Primary 6
“Going to a trip is fun. I was able to make friends with other students and celebrated our learning together.
I hope to go for another field trip next year! Eydie Wong Ee Ting, Primary 5
“As an international student, learning about culture is exciting! Sibu Museum displays rich information
about people, culture and Sarawak life in the past. I am thrilled to tell my friends back in India how amazing
Malaysian culture is.” – Avi Bajaj, Primary 4
Out and About – Secondary (By Mr Jimmy)
On Thursday 9th September three teachers and 32 Secondary students went across to Sibu Benevolent
Society Nursing Home. Upon arrival, the students presented a series of performance to the senior
citizen staying there.
The show started with a group rendition of a famous Mandarin song titled “Childhood”. The
folks were gathered and seated on the bench arranged by the students. They enjoyed the songs
and clapped while the students were performing their childhood song.
It was then followed by a solo performance from Grace Tang (Y8W). She also performed a song
that the folks enjoyed very much. After the students helped the folks walk back to their rooms,
they started to do the cleaning throughout the compound of the nursing home. They swept and
mopped the floor, cleaned the windows. Some sat down and chit-chatted with the folks,
listening to their stories of the past. Each and every student took part and performed
exceptionally well.
SENIM’s 4th Annual Conference
On Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th November Woodlands International School had the privilege of hosting
the 4th Annual SENIM (Special Education Network in Malaysia) Conference. Over 400 delegates and 40
presenters came to share their knowledge and experiences as medical practitioners, educators or as
parents of students with Special Needs.
We were blessed with the presents of Dato Sri Fatima who gave a welcoming speech, and Datuk Tiong
Thai King who closed the conference.
All our Woodlands teachers gave a helping hand as well as some of Student Leaders. We received plenty
of positive feedback; once again we live up to our school motto: - “Together We Shine”. Many thanks to
all!
A mix of WInS and Special Education Needs students present a cultural dance at the closing ceremony –
many thanks to Ms Christcharlynn for her splendid work in choreographing the performance
Year Book 2017
I was keen to share my memories of the school year with the WInS community as a thank you for all the
love I have felt and shared over the year. I am so grateful to all the sponsors that enabled us to pass to
you free of charge.
Unfortunately we were pushed for time to ensure it arrived before the end of the school year, and we
were unable to do a final proof of the contents which meant that there were a few glitches.
Nonetheless it will act as a blueprint for next year, and we will be looking at setting up a Year Book
Committee for 2018 that will assist the project.
Our Early Years Celebrations of Learning
On Friday 9th November our Early Years students enjoyed their Celebrations of Learning.
The students were absolutely brilliant with a series of short presentations from each class in both English
and Chinese.
All our students were awarded certificates and were presented with a DVD of their brilliant performances.
Once again I would like to thank our wonderful Early Years team for pulling off this stunning production.
Celebrations of Learning – Primary and Secondary
On Thursday 16th Woodlands hosted its formal End of Year Celebration of Learning for the Primary and
Secondary students. As well as the awards, we also enjoyed the graduation of our Year 11 students as well
as some presentations from Primary and Secondary students. As I mentioned in my opening remarks, all
your children are winners to me.

Ms Fiona, Mr Ray and Mr Bong.

January – Responsibility June – Attentiveness
February – Patience July - Forgiveness
March – Respect August – Resourcefulness
April - Honesty September - Compassion
May - Enthusiasm October - Wisdom
