Principal’s Message
We are proud partners with the University of Melbourne.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Christmas Concert Date Change After consultation with the School Council, this year’s Christmas concert will now be held on Thursday 14th December. Apologies for any inconvenience caused but we hope to see you all there! School Uniform Changes With the redesign of the school logo, website and development of the school values the school uniform will also be changing. While the new uniforms will be available for next year, the change over process will take place over the next two years. We are aiming to have all students in the new uniform by the beginning of 2020. Until then, the existing uniform will still be able to be worn Count Us In – Today 12pm – 1pm Each year we support Music Count Us In with all students singing the same song together at the same time. Music: Count Us In (MCUI) is Australia’s biggest school initiative. In 2016, more than 600,000 students from over 2,500 schools participated nationwide. In 2016, we celebrated our 10th anniversary. Music: Count Us In brings teachers, parents, students and the music industry together in celebration of music and music education. The program is a perfect fit for schools with an existing music program and for schools without one. Music: Count Us In exists to advocate for improved access to music education for all students across Australia.
School Fete Rides I would just like to reassure everyone that in the event of rain for the twilight fete where the rides are unable to open all ride bracelets bought prior to the fete will be completely reimbursed. On Friday 20th October, Nicky Johnston, an illustrator and author of children’s picture storybooks came to
speak to our students about the illustrator’s role in supporting the author’s message about
the characters and setting. Our Year 3 students have written their reflections of the show.
Today I met Nicky Johnston who is a talented author and illustrator. Nicky Johnston’s latest book is called
‘Grandma Forgets’. Paul Russel was the author and she was the illustrator. My favourite part of the
session was drawing what Nicky Johnston drew. Something I learnt today was a new way to draw a
tongue. My favourite illustration was a minion chasing a rabbit and Gru and a minion watching.
Also a horse was watching all the chaos of the minion chasing the rabbit. Manal 3H13
Today I met the author and illustrator Nicky Johnston and she read to us her new book called Grandma
forgets. My favourite part of the session was drawing our own characters and sketching. Something
that I learnt was that it takes 1 year to write one book. My favourite illustration I drew today was my own
character because I did it on my own and it looked good. Harrison 3H13
Today I saw Nicky Johnston. She is an author and illustrator. She illustrated the ‘Grandma Forgot’ story.
I like Nicky Johnston because she is really good at drawing. My favourite part of the session was drawing
the face because it looks funny. Something that I learned was how to draw Grandma. My favourite
illustration I drew today was the character’s feelings because I love drawing. Elvin 3H13
On Friday 20th October 2017, I went to see Nicky Johnston. She is an author and illustrator. Her latest book
is Grandma Forgets. My favourite part of the session was drawing a rabbit on a farm and being chased
by a minion. Something that I learnt was how to do the tongue an easy way. My favourite illustration I
drew today was a rabbit on a farm being chased by a minion because it was funny to draw. Cody 3H13

Junior Taskworks Excursion
The Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students visited Taskworks for a day of curriculum-based activities. Taskworks
is Australia’s first 100% hands-on educational activity centre for Primary school students. The children were
divided into small groups and rotated throughout the facility for the duration of their visit. They each
experienced six different activities requiring a combination of different skills and all activities are indoors.
On Monday the 23rd October, my class went to Taskworks on the bus. When the bus stopped, we had to see
who was teaching us in our group, our team was with Aaron. We did the peg wall where you had to put the
pegs into the holes. My team came second, and then there was a new rule we had to carry the bucket.
Micah 2M12
On our way there, we were singing songs on the bus. The first activity was the puzzle room and then we
went to build a robot. We had to pull the robot apart and put it in a different style that we all had agreed to.
The last activity stomp a stump was difficult, as you had to stomp on the things. Gabriella 2M12
On Monday the 23rd October, we went to Taskworks on the bus. First, my class went to the peg wall and we
had teams where we started and stopped buttons. Next, I was building towers with others and we built it
with hard and soft blocks, but we could only use three blocks. Laurelei 2M12
Our visit to Bunjil Place
On the 29th of October, the students that were interviewed for Bunjil Place were asked if they could come
along to the opening of the new building in the city of Casey called ‘Bunjil Place’. In there was a selection of
rooms placed with theatres, studios, a library and many more.
At Bunjil Place we met with many people and had a load of fun. There was even the Mayor of Casey there
too and it was great to meet him. We saw a performance at the front of the building and there was a
controlled confetti explosion. Everyone that came enjoyed Bunjil Place and we did too. Bunjil Place was an
amazing time. William 5B18

The importance of feedback: Using Language to Reinforce
Effort and Actions
Feedback is a very important part of the Intellectual element. It also influences other factors of the child’s development: relationships with others (Social); their self-belief and mindset (Cultural); their motivation and confidence (Emotional); and their actions (Physical).
Use your feedback to positively affect your child’s development. Let them know you have noticed their effort and actions by using language that reinforces their behaviour, choices and learning. This also develops a growth mindset. Be specific about what you want to reinforce, as this will allow children to repeat it again next time. Good job or good girl/boy are not instructional enough – they don’t inform the child what was good or why. Being clear and encouraging can make a huge difference.
Here are some examples for you to consider.
Instead of:
What a lovely picture.
Try:
You used colour and shading to help the viewer to feel how it is to stand on the beach.
This helps children to know what techniques worked and why.
Instead of:
You did a great job…
Try:
You put all the items away in their correct place, and this will make it easier to use them next time…
This helps children to know what is expected with packing up, and why putting things away correctly is helpful.
Instead of:
This writing still needs to be longer.
Try:
You did your personal best with your writing. What helped you to be able to write more today?
This helps as focussing on what’s wrong can be very discouraging, especially when children are trying their best, and/or are making progress. Look for positives and notice growth and effort– although their writing may not be as long as you may like, it might have been their longest so far.
Instead of:
Good girl/boy for not hitting Sally when she went to use your pencil.
Try:
You felt angry when Sally went to use your pencil, and you used your words to help Sally get her own pencil.
This helps children to understand why they felt angry, and by doing this it supports both hemispheres of their brain to work together (left side names what the right side is feeling).
Instead of:
Why are some of you not ready to come inside yet?
Try:
I can see some of you are ready to come inside because you are…[state what want to see]
This helps by letting children know the expectations, and acknowledges those doing the right thing.
Instead of:
I really like that you used capital letters in your writing today.
Try:
I can see that you used capital letters in your writing.
This helps by shifting their need for your approval and focuses attention on their work instead.
[or]
What can you notice about your use of capital letters today? [say with a smile]
This helps by having them identify what they have done well, instead of needing this from others as much.
Instead of:
You did your best work today.
Try:
All the effort you put into your work meant you achieved a new personal best.
This helps by reinforcing effort, which will assist them to see the value of effort in achieving personal learning growth.
Use tone that is warm and encouraging, as this communicates just as much as your choice of words.

How will the Information and Readiness Sessions be helpful? The Information and Readiness evening sessions are designed to provide our parents and carers with all the necessary information for the coming year. There will be teaching staff presenting curriculum information such as reading, phonics and Mathematics and guiding parents with tips on how to ensure that your child is ready for their start to school in 2018. You will also find out about: Uniform, before and after school care, School Council, our parent committee F.O.M. (Friends of Maramba), canteen, Year 6 buddies program, school specialist programs and how you can be involved with your child’s start to school.
If you have not yet enrolled your child at Maramba for Foundation in 2018, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible, to ensure your child’s place in the Footsteps into Foundation program for Term 4.
What about the parents? Parents will have the opportunity to meet other parents and families ask questions and tour our wonderful school. Parents are welcome to stay with their child during the Footsteps into Foundation sessions.
What experiences will my child participate in with Footsteps into Foundation? • A visit to the Library and Computer Lab. • Exploring the school grounds and play equipment. • Meeting Year 5 students who will be their Buddies in 2018.
How are the Footsteps into Foundation Transition Sessions Different? When the Footsteps into Foundation transition sessions start, they are predominantly set up for families who have already enrolled their child in the school. These sessions run as a continuation of the Foundation Discovery sessions where children will continue to engage in a variety of fun activities in a classroom setting. However, they will be more focused on the transition from kindergarten to primary school allowing the teachers to start observing each child in the class environment.
These observations and activities provide teachers with important information about the child’s stage of development and establish the level of academic and pastoral support they would benefit from at the beginning of the school year. During these sessions, your child will have the opportunity to interact with their potential future class mates and potential teacher for 2018.
What to do next? If you are interested in our Footsteps into Foundation program, please register by calling 9796 7150.
