School Uniform Expectations

We have high expectations of all our students and everything we do. As such, it is vitally important that

all students come to school wearing the correct uniform every day.

After two years of transitioning to the new school uniform, this year the old school uniform is no longer

able to be worn.

The school uniform expectations are:

new school uniform to be worn

broad brimmed hats must be worn outside and have a school logo – no hat no play outside

shoes must be completely black only

plain black, white or navy blue socks

only studs or small sleepers are allowed

watches and fitbits can be worn

all other jewellery i.e. bracelets or necklaces of any kind are not permissible

all type of religious headdress in uniform colours – either black, navy blue or white

The summer school uniform is:

PLEASE NOTE: School shoes must be black.

Girls and Boys Polo Shirt

Boys Navy Shorts

Girls Summer Dress

Girls Navy Skorts

Girls T-bar Shoes Girls or Boys

Black Shoes

State Schools’ Relief State Schools’ Relief is a not for profit organisation that supports the needs of short- term crisis and long term chronic needs Victorian government school students by providing new school uniforms, shoes and educational resources. They work side by side with all Victorian Primary, Secondary, Special Developmental and Language schools to ensure that any students facing hardship have the necessary clothing and appropriate footwear for school. Please speak to Mrs Morwood, Mrs Sweeney or Mr Wallace, they act as representatives of State Schools’ Relief and will be able to assist with your individual request for assistance.

School Council - Elections Each year some members of the School Council retire and new members are elected. The School Council election process will commence in the next couple of weeks. I will have more details in next week’s Maramba Flyer about the process you will need to follow if you are interested in joining the School Council for 2020. If you have any queries please see myself at school or ring (9796 7150) to make an appointment so I can have a chat about the role.

Student Accident Insurance At the start of the year, I would like to remind our school community that the Department of Education and Training does not cover the cost of student accidents. However, there are some companies who can offer you inexpensive student accident insurance if you wish to cover your children while they are at school. Use the following address to the insurance company link below: http://www.studenthealth.com.au/ I also inform you that the Department of Education and Training does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property.

Health and Safety - Before and After School Supervision Just a reminder that the school only provides supervision of students on the school grounds at the following times: Before school 8.45am – 9am After school 3.25pm – 3.40pm Students on the school grounds outside of these times and normal school hours are not supervised or covered by the school’s insurance policy should an accident occur.

Bike and Scooter Expectation One of the school’s expectations of students, who ride their bikes or scooters to school, is that they are not to ride them on the school grounds. This expectation is in place to ensure the safety of all students, parents, carers and other members of the community. We want to ensure the school grounds are a safe environment for everyone by not putting the safety of others at risk. If students repeatedly decide not to adhere to this expectation then they will be banned from bringing their bike, scooter or skateboard onto the school grounds.

Car Parks – STAFF ONLY! Just a reminder, both school car parks are for STAFF and EDUCATIONAL AGENCY VISITORS ONLY. It is too dangerous to allow cars to be moving in and out during school time and at drop off and pick up times. So please do not enter these areas at any time including walking through the

car parks at drop off and collection times - for the safety of your children.

General Courtesy Obeying the Road Rules around the School Precinct For your children’s safety I begin the year with a plea for your consideration and cooperation in ensuring you follow the road rules and display courtesy at all times when parking or driving around the school. Pick Up and Drop Off times are very busy in any school and inevitably there will be a lot of traffic. I suggest you park somewhere nearby and have a stroll on a nice day with your children. When parking in the surrounding streets, it is imperative that you also follow the parking relations and rules. We must honour the local residents with courtesy also. We have tremendous neighbours around the school so please do not park in their driveways, on nature strips and ensure you obey the parking regulations in place. There are ‘No Standing’ signs in the area that must be obeyed.

PARENT and CARER REMINDERS Absence Notifications If your child is absent from school, please ring the school office on 9796 7150 on the morning of the

absence or send a note with the student on the day they return to school. Thank you.

Late Passes Every minute counts in your child/ren’s education. However, if your child is late to school they must sign in at the office to receive a late pass to give to their teacher. Early Leavers If you need to collect your child before the end of school, please do not go straight to the classroom. All visitors are required to sign in and the students must be signed out at the office, where you will be given an Early Leavers pass to give to the teacher. Kind regards, Darren Wallace Principal

Assistant Principal’s Report

WELCOME BACK TO THE NEW YEAR

Our 2020 school year commenced last week and as I write this I reflect on the lovely start we have once again had to the new school year. I do hope you all had time with family and friends over the break and that the start of the year has been a positive one for you all. This year, we again welcome new families to Maramba across all year levels as well as our new Foundations. I am sure the whole community joins me in welcoming you all to our school and I trust that your time with us is positive and enjoyable. I do hope you will all quickly become part of our Maramba Primary School community. In the coming weeks, parents will have a chance to meet staff informally before and after school. Each year when we return, it is a pleasure to see such happy and enthusiastic faces. When I chat to students they share lovely holiday stories but are also looking forward to their new school year We are very fortunate to have such a committed staff at Maramba Primary School who work tirelessly to

ensure the very best for each child, ensuring they are supported and their individual needs are

considered. Throughout the year, I hope we will share many opportunities of watching our students shine

in many ways. Staff have been busy over recent weeks preparing for a smooth start to 2020 and I would

like to thank you, the parents, for your efforts in preparing your children so well for the start of the school

year.

Since returning, our students have been spending time engaging in activities in their classrooms and learning teams focusing on our ‘Start Up’ program. Through the Start Up activities we focus on: Students getting to know their new classes and the daily routines Establishing positive, engaging learning environments where each child feels valued Developing clear, shared expectations and processes for classrooms and learning teams Encouraging a sense of responsibility and active involvement in decision making An awareness of the behaviours that demonstrate the values we hold We encourage an open door policy at Maramba and an invitation is extended to all parents to visit the

school or ring, should you wish to discuss any issues, talk through a problem or just have a chat about

their child at any time throughout the year.

SUPERVISION IN OUR SCHOOL YARD

Our yard is supervised by staff from 8.45am in the mornings and till 3.40pm in the afternoons. We realise

that on fine mornings it is lovely to play in our yard before school or linger a little longer in the

afternoons, but we ask that only children who are supervised by their family or friends arrive earlier than

8.45am or stay after 3.40pm.

Protecting the Safety and Wellbeing of All Students

A notice will shortly be sent home requesting parents and carers to indicate the release of their children from class at the end of the school day. As teachers and a school, we have the highest regard for student safety and wellbeing, which includes ensuring all students are collected safely from school at the end of each day. While you may have an established routine you have been doing for a while or even years it is important that all staff new and old have this information.

On the form you will be asked to indicate if:

Your child will be collected from the classroom at the end of each day?

If collected who are the nominated adults or siblings who collect?

You give permission for the teacher to release your child from the classroom at the end of each day unsupervised?

If released unsupervised does your child:

Meet a parent or sibling at an agreed collection point at the school?

Travel home by themselves?

Our canteen will be from open next week and orders are available to be placed via QKR.

The new 2020 canteen menu for Term1 and 2 is on the next page.
