We are a school. … knowledge to empower our learning and our lives!
Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome Back To Term Two I hope all families had a great time enjoying the Easter holidays together. Due to the early Easter this year, the term will be 11 weeks. Welcome back to everyone and we are looking forward to a great Term ahead! Our Maramba School Values
Our school values are an integral part of who we are as a people and as a community. They are the things that we believe are important. Values have a major influence on a person's behavior and attitude. Every day and every moment they serve as broad guidelines in all situations in guiding us in the choices we make and the actions we take.
In Term 2, we will be focusing on our second school value of Respect. Respect: We are understanding and considerate of every-one’s rights.
How we treat and consider other people, the environment and ourselves is an important life value. You can give and model respect by: listening actively to what they say; Some of our values are about how we treat other people and what consideration we give them. Respect is not usually a one-off event or action. It is at the heart of all behaviour, the underlying principle. You can give and show respect by: taking pride in yourself in all that you do; being honest;

being well-mannered
modelling moral integrity; allowing others to express opinions;
appreciating and taking into account other people’s preferences; taking an active stance against bullying and discrimination;
listening thoughtfully to all opinions, even when controversial; caring for our environment;
taking pride in our school community; and including everyone, at the earliest stage possible, in the decision-making process. ANZAC Day Assembly
Well done to our students for a wonderfully respectful ANZAC day assembly last Wednesday. All classes laid remembrance wreaths at our lone pine and some students brought in their own
flowers. It was also great to see that some of our students wore their great grandfather’s medals All of the student leaders ran the assembly impeccably. Well done!
A special thank you to the 5000 Poppy community group for do-nating the knitted poppies to our school. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! A few of our special Year 1 mums (Rathor, Meester, Kaur and Henderson) who stayed after school last Tuesday till 5pm to attach them to the fabric backing. We have hung the poppy blanket in front of the library so they could be put on display and shared by everyone to help commemorate ANZAC Day. It looks absolutely stunning! Thank you very much!
Amazing MPAC Performances On the last day of Term 1, students performed their Human Literacy class songs. Each class had been working with Mr Shenfield to write the lyrics for their class song. The class song is an important part of the class’ identify. It brings them together as a team and identifies their strengths and aspirations of who they want to be and be seen as. Powerful motivation!
Safety in the Sun As a SunSmart accredited school, we must ensure that the children continue to wear hats for a few weeks in term two until 10th May. The UV levels are still above three so please continue to Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, Slap on a wide brimmed hat, Seek shade and, if practical, Slide on wrap-around sunglasses until the 10th May. Please check the daily sun protection times to be sure. These are available on the free SunSmart app and widget, in the weather section of the newspaper or at sunsmart.com.au even in the cooler autumn weather, that UV exposure all adds up. Kind regards, Darren Wallace Principal
Assistant Principal Report
On ANZAC Day we remember the ANZAC spirit. Our country saw the damage that had been dealt to the
soldiers during the war, the men and women had to search for the positive side. The soldiers had to get
through such a horrendous time. To help with this, they created good bonds together. Private John
Simpson Kirkpatrick was known for being a stretcher bearer in the Australian Army Medical Corps. Just
in 24 days, Simpson and his donkey rescued 300 wounded soldiers.
On ANZAC Day we remember the families who have lost family members or who are dealing with
soldiers who have major injuries. Grace and Sakeena 5K18
On ANZAC Day we will remember the soldiers that fought in the war for the future generations. We will
remember how many lives were lost in the war. Many people had been wounded or passed. We will
remember them. Olivia and Matilda 5K18
On ANZAC Day we remember Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans. Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people have fought in all of the wars that Australia has been involved in. This is despite them
not being treated fairly. Dustin and Tehora 5K18
On ANZAC Day we remember the women in World War One. Women played a vital role in world war
one. Many men had gone to fight in the war, therefore women were recruited to fill in the job of men.
Women also had to work in the military as nurses. There was also an increase in employment rates for
women in what were already traditional areas of women’s work. Between 1914 and 1918 women’s
employment rates nearly doubled. Lest we forget. Emelia and Shanae 5K18
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commemorative Ceremony
This ceremony was held after the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Aboriginal Memorial plaque on the side of Mount Ainslie, commencing at 6.30 am. The commemorative ceremony was conducted to honour those Indigenous Australians who have served in the Australian forces since 1901. It is hosted by members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans and Services Association (ATSIVSA), and was open to all members of the public.
Last week the Year 6 classes presented their proposed bills in a mock parliamentary session as a celebration of their Discovery work in term 1. Students wrote expositions to convince members of parliament to pass a specific bill. The year 5 students recited rebuttals opposing the proposed bill. It was a successful session as most bills were passed in the House of Representatives and were sent to the Senate for a second reading, one step closer to becoming a law.
This creative project was challenging and interesting. It took a lot of hard work and ended with a bang. Of course this ‘bang’ was our presentation of all our hard work. Personally I thought our group’s presentation ran smoothly as planned, we argued for our proposed ‘law’. Also we were lucky enough to have the wonderful year five students helping. This was a great experience for everyone. Alyx 6W4 This project was nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was difficult to make sure everything was prepared, but everyone’s presentation was outstanding. Plus the year fives participated in the mock play! The journey took a while but the ending was spectacular. This was a one in a lifetime experience in my case. One of the best things about this project was that our expositions were sent to Parliament House! Hopefully they reply. Indiana 6W4 Diane Morwood
