Abstract
In August of 1988, electromagnetic and magnetic surveys hadbeen conducted over the Fadrowski Drum Disposal Site,Franklin, Wisconsin. The following was interpreted from theresults:
1. Approximately one third of the site could beconsidered to be fill area containing a noticeable amountferrous material.
2. In addition, about one fifth of the site show signs ofhighly conductive soil in the eastern most portion, whichis untypical of the whole site.

Introduction

From August 15th through August 19, 1988, an electromagnetic andmagnetic survey was conducted over approximately 20 acres of theFadrowski Drum Disposal Site, Franklin, Wisconsin (Warzyn projectnumber 13452). The objective of the surveys were to delineatepossible fill areas and to locate possible buried iron richobjects(e.g. drums). A complete site description and history canbe obtained from Warzyn Engineering, Inc., Madison, Wisconsin.
Overview of Geophysical Theory
A brief tutorial in geophysical methods and theory is providedhere for those who are unfamiliar with Electromagnetic andMagnetic Surveys.
In electromagnetic surveys, a transmitter produces anelectromagnetic field which induces a current into the ground. This induced current generates its own electromagnetic fieldwhich is a reflection of the soils' bulk conductance. Thissynthesized field is detected by a receiver that translates theamplitude and phase of the electromagnetic field into a numericalvalue of conductance. Electrical conductors, generally iron, lessthan ten feet deep will result in field distortion and yield"zero" or negative values of conductance. Hence, shallow metallicobjects are easily identified by their negative or "zero" valueof conductance. If the metallic object(s) is/are too deep forfield distortion then the Em may lead to an abnormally high valueof conductance.
Magnetic surveys use a magnetometer to measure the earth'smagnetic field. In this study, a proton magnetometer was used tomeasure the intensity of the earth's total field. Othermagnetometers may measure a horizontal or vertical component ofthe earth's magnetic field or the gradient of any component. Theearth's local magnetic field is easily distorted by the presence° fgrr.oug materials, thus creating mappable variations oranomaliesthat locate onljf the presence of buried ferrousobjects. However, cultural noise, such as a power-line, may leadto measurement errors.
Magnetic and electromagnetic methods can not absolutely determinethe depth of burial or the type of metallic object that isburied. This means that these surveys generally can notdistinguish between a couple of barrels or a small engine block. The source of the anomalies must be independently determined.Furthermore, these methods cannot define the actual form of themetallic objects but they can provide an excellent approximationof the horizontal extent of the metallic object(s), whatever theform.
Penetration of the electromagnetic (Em) gear can range from thesurface (near surface metallic objects can inhibit deeperpenetrations) to fifteen feet depending on the size, the shape, and the metallic object's depth of burial. In contrast, themagnetic's depth of investigation can theoretically be as deep as
sixty feet for a 1°°° pounds of iron. For a buried metallicobject, Em surveys produce spatially smaller anomalies on acontour map, thus, more accurately delineating the actual size ofthe object.
Methodology
The area covered at the Fadrowski site was chosen by WarzynOversite Personnel and then gridded on twenty foot centers. Over3000 readings were taken. The distance between stations wastwenty-five feet. See Figure 5: Fadrowski Site ElectromagneticStation Locations and Figure 9: Fadrowski Site Magnetic StationLocations for the locations of the stations occupied. The (0,0)station was located 150 feet north and 4 feet west of a city firehydrant located on the street and at the midpoint of the site.
A Geonics Em 31D Electromagnetic Terrain Conductivity Meter wasused to take conductivity measurements. All electromagnetic datawas recorded on a TRS Model 100 portable computer, and later uploaded into a mainframe system.
An EG&G Geometries G856AX Portable Proton Precession Magnetometerwith built-in digital memory was used to take total fieldmagnetic readings on each of the three grids. All readings weretaken at an approximate height of five feet from ground level.Field data was stored in the built-in digital memory of themagnetometer and then later up loaded into a mainframe system. The plotted data is the difference between the field station andthe time dependent base station.
Conclusions
Interpretation of the data has been broken down into three parts:class one anomalies(delineation of the landfill), class twoanomalies and class three anomalies.
Class one through class three anomalies are based on size, theirrelative intensity, and correlation between other contour maps.Class one anomalies(fill area) are some of the largest, producethe greatest change in values, and are detected both magneticallyand electromagnetically. Class one anomalies are seen in two ofthe data sets. Class two anomalies are electromagnetically and/ormagnetically intense and are most likely due to buried metallicobject(s) at depth. Class three anomalies are mainlyelectroraagnetically significant and are caused by buried metalquit deep(possible shallow but then small in size), or highlyconductive clays, which could be contaminated. In this report, class one anomalies are colored coded in red, class two anomaliesin green, and class three anomalies in blue. A quantitativedefinition of the three classes are provided in Table 1.
Table _1
Anomaly Class Color Definition Meaning
Class one Red Em < 30mmhos/m and FillMag > 100 gammas Area
Class two Green Em < 10 mmhos/m or Buried MetalMag. > 100 gammas
Class three Blue Em > 50 mmhos/m Deep MetalHighly Cond.Clays(PossibleContain. )
The Fadrowski Site shows evidence of one large fill area, severalisolated anomalies indicating buried metal, and one large andhighly conductive anomaly. The fill area is best described by theclass one anomalies labeled anomaly #1 in Figure 2: FadrowskiSite Medium Em Values(30 to 50 mmhos/m) and anomaly #2 in Figure8: Fadrowski Site High Magnetic Changes(100 to 2000 Gammas).Within the assumed fill boundaries, three class two anomalies(anomalies #3, #4, and #5) can be found in Figure 3: FadrowskiSite Low Em Values(0 to 20 mmhos/m). Indications of anomalies #4and #5 are also seen in Figure 8. Figure 8 reflects many classtwo anomalies. In fact, any magnetic variance greater than 100Gammas may be due to buried ferrous objects. Anomaly f6 in Figure8 could potentially be caused by a large bill board sign.
The site contains only one class three anomaly, anomaly 17. Thisanomaly may be due to buried metal at a great depth causing highvalues of conductance, however there is not any magnetic anomalyassociated with it. This anomaly could imply the presence ofabnormally high ion concentrations in the soil unrelated toferrous objects at depth. Because clays have such a large rangeof conductivities associated with them, it is not possible todetermine whether the elevated conductivities are due tocontaminated ground water or naturally occurring saturated clays.Anomaly #7 may require further investigation to determine itsorigin.
Quality Assurance
The repeatability of the electromagnetics and magnetics wasestablished in the field for quality assurance and qualitycontrol(QA/QC). To exhibit QA/QC, several transects wererepeated. Figure 10: Repeated Electromagnetic Stationsgraphically shows the excellent repeatability of theelectromagnetic gear. Magnetic transects were not recordedbecause of memory limitations but yielded results equivalent tothe electromagnetics.

STANDARD DISCLAIMER
The objective of any geophysical survey is to define theexistence and configuration of features at depth. However, thesefeatures may bear a highly complex relationship to thegeophysical measurements recorded. Therefore, conclusions drawn,no matter how logically deduced, should not be misconstrued asfact. We shall not and will not, except in the case of gross orwillful negligence on our part, be liable or responsible for anylosses, costs, damages or expenses incurred or sustained byanyone resulting from any interpretation made by any of ourofficers, employees and agents or by anyone else not related toFromm Applied Technology who might base interpretations andopinions on our geophysical surveys.
