How did you use forms and conventions in your production?

Latent LoveIn this PowerPoint presentation I will evaluate how I used different forms and conventions, in varying ways to create a 5 minute short film which will appeal to my target audience and market and will

be successfully promoted using my ancillary texts.

Narrative We needed to used narrative effectively in order to create as successful short film, a narrative is a chain

of events which come about form cause and effect.

We used a conventional narrative style similar to Todorovs theory of narrative

Todorov believes narratives are structured in five stages at first stage is the equilibrium the second stage is a disruption of the equilibrium, for us this would be in relation to the car crash scene and the third stage is recognition there has been a disruption which is the hospital scene. The fourth stage is an attempt to repair the disruption and stage 5 a reinstatement of the equilibrium.

This type of narrate structure can be seen as very mainstream although we challenged the forms of narrative in our film.

Firstly because time was a major aspect of our brief we decided to use flashbacks to represent different concept of time, this challenged the typical conventions of narrative because we did not stick to the linear structure which is start middle end.

Also our use of narrative range which was restricted narration helped develop our narrative because it continually gave our audience an insight to what the predominant female is thinking. This in return keeps the audience intrigued and at the edge of there seats.

We felt if we used a enigma in our film that it would put us apart from the rest of the short films which are around today. The enigma which we created was that the predominate female character was in a life or death situation and also that there is a twist in our film at the end. This is very similar to the short film telling mark. Telling mark

When we used our narration, we incorporated this as a voice in the female characters head as she was reading her diary. This is called objective character identification and it allows the viewers to be given unique access to a characters point of view such as seeing things from the characters mind such as dreams , fantasies and in our case memories.

genre The genre of our film is a Tragedy/ chick flick Hybrid. We have decide to use a

hybrid as we feel we will broaden our audience range and also because when we though of our narrative we knew this would be the perfect genre this is a similar genre to Spike Jonze I'm here. This is because both of these short films have romance and tragedy aspects.

Nick lacey's basic scheme of genre-

› Characters- our main female character can be summarised as a venerable girl has to choose between two men – similar to Bridget Jones diary which is a much more mainstream film.

› Setting- our location is very restricted due to budget if I had more time I would have a more realistic hospital room and car crash etc.The setting affects the mood which is created for example the hospital being a stereotypical sad place creates a sad mood on the audience

› Iconography- iconography is created in many ways firstly sounds effects car crash flat line- creates a much more atmospheric iconography, music in the last seen creates a happier mood

› The diary creates a iconography because the audience know when she picks up diary it involves the restricted narration and they know that there going to learn more about her feelings which relates to the enigma of our film.

cinematography

Style-The style of our film was very stylized and used many different conventions to give it individuality. We achieved this through the use of narrated diary entries. We felt this gave an in depth look into our predominant female character and allowed our audience to feel a sense of social realism.

Lighting- The lighting which we used was very restricted, this was due to our low budget and short time span. Our film has a huge sense of realism in the narrative therefore natural lighting helped us to portray this although in some scenes we used extra lights to add a more atmospheric setting.

We used camera shots such as pans, crabs and zooms to show composition movement.

We used proxemics to show relationship between our characters for example when Simon was visiting Isabelle in the hospital he was very close and holding her hand =, this showed how close they are. This helped to tell our narrative

editing Continuity- One problem which arose when

filming and editing our film was continuity, for example our main female character Isabelle had her hair cut during the filming period, so therefore in our first scene Isabelle had short hair and in the final scene her hair was longer due to when the filming happened

3 point- we decide to use 3 pint editing as we felt this editing technique would work best for a quick but effective short film.

Final cut- When editing we used the programme final cut pro which I felt was very easy to get to grasps with and was a very simple programme to edit a film like ours, although the techniques which final cut pro offers are very limited for example there was not many text options of slide transitions.

My film poster

I have used a red heart as the main feature of my film poster, this is because I felt that a still from the film would not create as much impact as the heart, the heart gives an insight into our narrative which involves romance. This heart against the paper background creates a lot of impact due to the contrast, the background also gives a aspect of our narrative which is the diary entries.

The heart beat line over the heart gives away a glimpse of the narrative of our film which is a chick flick/ TRADGEDY hybrid. Therefore I feel that when people see this film poster it will create a enigma around the film as the audience will start asking questions such as, why the heart beat monitor?

The tag line enforces the genre of tragedy as it conveys hurt and pain therefore it will help my target audience identify is this is a genre film they would like to see.
