he#musical#items#of#this#concert!reflect!in!a!very!poignant!way!the!anniversary!of!a!major!battle!in!the!First!World!War!100!years!ago.!The!Battle!of!the!Somme!was!drawing!to!a!close!after!many!months!of!what!can!now!only!be!

described!as!the!carnage!of!so!many!human!beings.!There!can!surely!be!no!one!in!this!church!who!does!not!have!a!relative!who!was!involved!in!this!war.!Some!may!have!been!either!killed!or!seriously!and!permanently!injured!in!body!or!mind.!For!many!of!us!that!is!only!two!generations!ago!–!our!grandparents’!era.!!Schubert’s!Mass!is!a!celebration!in!sublime!musical!form!for!the!living,!giving!thanks!to!God!whilst!being!fearful!of!his!wrath!for!those!who!sin!against!his!wishes.!Mozart’s!Requiem!is!a!plea!of!intervention!with!God!for!the!soul!of!the!departed!and!is!surely!the!highest!expression!of!any!composer’s!ability.!!To!reflect!these!pieces!and!being!cognisant!of!the!date!of!this!concert,!all!choir!members!are!wearing!commemorative!poppies!instead!of!the!bright!scarves!the!ladies!now!usually!wear.!!

MARGARET&HARVIE&(Rehearsal1accompanist)1Margaret&was!a!pupil!of!Mary!Moore!in!Edinburgh!and!a!member!of!the!Edinburgh!University!Singers!under!the!direction!of!Herrick!Bunney.!A!wellMknown!Dumfries!musician,!she!has!been!accompanist!of!Dumfries!Male!Voice!Choir!and!is!an!official!accompanist!to!the!Dumfries!and!District!Competitive!Music!Festival.!She!is!organist!of!Irongray!Church.!As!accompanist!to!the!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Chorus!and!in!a!similar!rôle!with!the!former!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Arts!Festival!Chorus,!Margaret!has!worked,!to!acclaim,!with!internationally!known!conductors!including!Christopher!Seaman,!Philip!Ledger,!Owain!Arwel!Hughes,!Takua!Yuasa,!and!Christopher!Bell.!In!March!1996!Margaret&was!honoured!by!Dumfries!and!Galloway!Regional!Council!with!an!Artistic!Achievement!Award!in!recognition!of!the!very!great!contribution!she!makes!to!the!artistic!life!of!our!community!as!an!accompanist,!and!in!November!2013!she!was!presented!with!a!Special!Award!commendation!for!her!services!to!music!as!a!culture!champion!nominee!at!the!

JOHN&COOPER&GREEN&(Organist) John&was!born!in!Keswick,!and!after!studying!with!Andrew!Seivewright!at!Carlisle!Cathedral,!went!to!the!Royal!College!of!Music!where!amongst!his!teachers!were!Herbert!Howells,!Herbert!Sumsion,!Nicholas!Kynaston,!Ralph!Downes!and!Herrick!Bunney.!This!was!followed!by!post!graduate!studies!at!Durham!University.!His!first!appointment!was!as!Assistant!Organist!at!Chester!Cathedral!and!Director!of!Music!at!the!Cathedral!Choir!School.!Later!posts!included!Organist!of!the!Collegiate!Church!of!St.!Mary!Stafford!and!Director!of!Music!at!Framlingham!College!in!Suffolk.!Whilst!there!he!was!appointed!the!first!conductor!of!the!Aldeburgh!Chamber!Choir!by!Sir!Peter!Pears.!After!ten!years!at!Framlingham!he!moved!in!1990!to!Stowe!School!as!Director!of!Music!and!conductor!of!the!Buckingham!Choral!Society.!Until!April!2012!John!was!organist!and!choirmaster!of!the!Civic!Church!of!Carlisle,!St.Cuthbert!and!he!is!now!organist!and!choirmaster!at!the!Parish!Church!of!Keswick,!St.John.!!

EMILY&MITCHELL&(Soprano)!!Emily!Mitchell!was!born!into!a!musical!family!in!Scotland!and!has!been!surrounded!by!music!from!an!early!age.!She!started!formal!classical!training!at!the!RSAMD!and!continues!vocal!studies!with!fellow!soprano!Jane!Irwin.!Emily!is!a!Live!Music!Now!artist!performing!as!a!duo!with!Geoffrey!Tanti!and!also!sings!in!the!chorus!of!Scottish!Opera.!She!has!made!frequent!appearances!across!Europe!at!various!festivals,!most!recently!in!the!Victoria!Arts!Festival!in!Gozo!singing!contemporary!works!by!Scottish!composer!Jennifer!Margaret!Baker.!Emily&is!a!regular!performer!with!the!Dunedin!Consort!and!has!recently!recorded!Bach’s!Magnificat!with!them.!!She!has!also!recorded!Handel’s!Esther!and!Mozart’s!Requiem,!!receiving!!5!star!reviews!and!a!Grammaphone!Award.!!She!has!appeared!with!RSNO!in!concert!performances!at!the!Edinburgh!International!Festival!in!the!

PAUL1ANWYL1(Bass)11Paul&comes!from!North!Wales!and!after!studying!history!at!University!College!London,!he!studied!singing!for!four!years!at!the!Royal!Northern!College!of!Music.!While!at!the!college!he!was!a!member!of!the!BBC!Northern!Singers.&Having!completed!his!studies,!Paul!became!a!full!time!member!of!Scottish!Opera!singing!in!over!120!opera!productions!and!understudied!or!performed!over!80!roles!for!the!company.!He!has!sung!widely!in!Oratorio!and!concert!throughout!Britain,!North!America!and!many!festivals!in!Europe.!He!continues!to!perform!with!Scottish!Opera!and!teaches!in!Glasgow.!!Paul&last!sang!with!us!in!our!production!of!Bach’s!St.!John!Passion!in!2013.!!

Franz&Schubert!!(1797%1828):!Mass!No.3!in!B!Flat!

Franz!Peter!Schubert!was!born!near!Vienna!in!January!1797,!the!12th!

child!of!a!Moravian!schoolteacher!and!his!wife,!Elizabeth.!His!father!

taught!him!the!rudiments!of!music!and!at!the!age!of!seven!he!was!

‘talent!spotted’!by!Antonio!Salieri,!Mozart’s!nemesis.!He!was!installed!

in!the!Imperial!Seminary!where!he!sang!in!the!choir,!played!violin!and!

learned!musical!theory!from!Salieri!himself!who!was!a!brilliant!teacher!

and,!under!his!direction,!Schubert!was!composing!his!first!string!

quartets,!songs!and!piano!pieces.!He!was!a!huge!admirer!of!Mozart!

declaring!him!“Immortal!Mozart”.!Perhaps!Schubert’s!greatest!

contribution!to!music!was!in!the!field!of!‘lieder’.!He!composed!about!

600!songs!reflecting!every!human!emotion!–!tenderness,!drama,!love!

and!loss!and!even!evocations!of!the!countryside.!Through!them!

Schubert!demonstrated!a!profound!appreciation!of!the!possibilities!of!

the!human!voice.!By!the!age!of!20!he!had!a!wide!circle!of!musical!friends!who!encouraged!him!in!his!

efforts!to!compose!rather!than!teach,!a!pursuit!he!did!not!enjoy.!It!was!during!this!period!that!his!

friends!gave!him!the!nickname!“Schwammerl”!or!Little!Mushroom!because!of!his!diminutive!height.!!

He!died!in!Vienna!on!19th!November!1828!at!the!all!too!young!age!of!31.!The!cause!of!his!death!is!

uncertain!but!one!theory!has!it!that!he!suffered!from!mercury!poisoning.!Mercury!was!taken!at!that!

time!as!a!cure!for!syphilis.!!

Schubert!composed!the!Mass!No!3!in!B!Flat!towards!the!end!of!1815.!Although!the!actual!occasion!

for!the!work!is!unknown,!it!is!thought!that!the!soprano!soloist!in!the!first!performance!was!Therese!

Grob!with!whom!he!tried!to!form!a!romantic!relationship!being!deeply!in!love!with!her.!It!is!not!

known!if!his!feelings!were!reciprocated.!!It!is!believed!to!have!been!first!performed!in!the!Lichtental!

Parish!Church.!It’s!original!orchestral!component!and!extended!orchestral!interludes!have!been!

called!“Haydnesque”!and!whose!Nelson!Mass!is!believed!to!have!been!a!strong!influence!on!

Schubert.!

Wolfgang(Amadeus(Mozart!!(1756&1791):!Requiem!Mass!in!D!Minor!The!story!of!Mozart’s!life!is!supposedly!well!known.!Austrian!born!on!27th!January!1756!to!a!tyrannical!father!who!worked!him!fiercely;!unhappily!married!to!a!spendthrift!woman;!a!childGlike!character!ill!at!ease!amid!the!aristocratic!splendour!of!the!Viennese!court;!!a!musical!genius!who!died!too!young!thus!depriving!the!world!of!future!musical!glories.!Few!of!these!statements!are!really!true.!From!his!early!days!as!a!child!prodigy!performing!for!the!Imperial!Royal!family!in!Vienna!to!the!last!months!of!his!too!short!life,!driven!to!exhaustion!by!a!punitive!workload,!one!thing!remained!constant:!his!happy!disposition.!Through!trials!and!tribulations,!grand!successes!and!disheartening!setbacks!he!was!blessed!with!an!abundance!of!talent!yet!often!

struggled!to!earn!a!living.!His!mischievous!nature!and!earthy!sense!of!humour,!his!ease!and!confidence!in!his!own!incredible!abilities!were!traits!that!never!left!him.!His!music!has!brought!comfort!and!joy!to!many!generations!of!music!lovers!the!world!over.!!In!his!final!year,!1791,!he!composed!3!symphonies,!The!Magic!Flute,!Clarinet!Concerto,!his!last!piano!concerto!and,!of!course,!started!work!on!his!wonderful!Requiem!Mass,!unfinished!at!his!death.!Work!on!the!Requiem!Mass!in!D!Minor!(K626)!was!started!in!Vienna!about!October!8th!in!1791!and!left!unfinished!at!the!composer’s!death!on!5th!December.!!A!completed!manuscript!dated!1792!by!Franz!Xaver!Sussmayr!was!delivered!to!Count!Franz!von!WalseggGStuppach!who!had!anonymously!commissioned!the!piece!for!a!Requiem!Mass!to!commemorate!the!anniversary!of!his!wife’s!death!on!14th!February!1791.!!The!autographed!manuscript!shows!the!finished!and!orchestrated!Introit!in!Mozart’s!own!hand!as!well!as!detailed!drafts!of!the!Kyrie!and!the!sequence!Dies4Irae!as!far!as!the!first!eight!bars!of!the!Lacrimosa!movement!and!the!Offertory.!There!is!huge!speculation!and!conjecture!as!to!how!much!of!the!remaining!movements!were!penned!by!Mozart!in!sketch!form!or!by!verbal!direction!to!his!collaborator,!Sussmayr!who,!himself,!claimed!that!the!completion!of!the!Lacrimosa!and!the!Sanctus,!Benedictus!and!Agnus4Dei!were!his!own!work.!It!is!impossible!and!unnecessary!in!this!brief!account!of!the!Requiem!to!be!more!explicit.!Suffice!to!say!that!whoever!was!responsible!for!completing!the!work!must!surely!have!been!greatly!influenced!by!Mozart!himself.!We!as!singers!and!listeners!alike!are!left!to!enjoy!this!glorious!music.!
