Q & A

Qtn 1.

While Practising Tai Chi, taking low stance, any age barriersplease, some advise not to venture in taking low stance if one is 50or 60 of Age, of any Exercise for that matter. - R.Sundararajan,Chennai

Ans:

Age is only a number......you may do the long form as many times as youwish and take a stance which is suitable for you. Taichi is an Art whichshould relax you, be it 1 round or 5. If you feel very tired or you feel pain inthe joints at the end of your practice, then you need to check if you are overdoing it.Advice for you : See that you practice at least 1 round of 85 forms/28forms/sword forms/sabre forms without a break. If you are able to do thisfor 3 months then you assess for yourself if you need to do more repeatationor whether you need to go lower in stance and judge for yourself what isbest, of course you can always consult me to reassure yourself. If you havethe time you may do 40 mins walking before or after Taichi 5 times a week.

Qtn 2.

As I understand, a Tai Chi session can be fulfilling only whenyou have relaxed your shoulder and neck muscles completely. Ihave observed while doing Tai Chi that several times I tend totense the shoulder and neck muscles.

Is there any aid to achieving relaxation of the shouldermuscles? Like tying some weights to the elbows or doing a sessionwith a back pack on?

Ans:

It is indeed very good that you have been observing yourself whileperforming the Taichi forms, you are in the right path and will refine as youare aware what is obstructing the progress of relaxing not only of theshoulders and neck but the entire body and the mind.Qtn 3.

Tai Chi has definitely made a big and noticable difference tomy lower half - the muscles, the posture etc. How or what doesTai Chi do to the upper half considering that the emphasis is onkeeping the upper half relaxed? - Pramod Kumar, Chennai

Ans:

While performing the Taichi 85 forms we are giving good workout forthe lower body. While performing the Taichi weapons it addresses the upper
