WELCOME TO NESCOT

BEING INVOLVED

One of the best things about becoming a full-time student at Nescot is having the chance to get involved.

You’ll be able to go on trips, do work experience and take part in college-based, regional and national competitions.

There will also be opportunities for you to take part in our

SAFEGUARDING

We take our duty to protect and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults and people aged under 18 seriously. The college has a designated Safeguarding Officer, and our Safeguarding Policy is available from Advice and Guidance or by visiting:www.nescot.ac.uk/about-nescot/student-services/staying-safe/

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

As a member of the college, you have rights and responsibilities. When you sign your learning agreement at enrolment you are signing up to our code of conduct. Full details of this are available from Advice and Guidance, and your tutor.

Student Voice forums and have a say in how the college works.

You’ll be able to get involved in activities such as Nescot’s Got Talent, fundraise for charity events throughout the year, and celebrate events such as Diwali. Many of our students also get involved in community projects, and mentor other students. Getting involved in college life is a good way to meet other students, make a difference to someone else’s life and have fun at the same time.

HAVING A VOICE AND BEING HEARD

One way you can make a difference at Nescot is through our Student Voice forum. Each class elects a representative to meet senior members of staff each term to tell them about their experiences at the college and suggest ideas for improvement. As a class representative you could also be part of a focus group to have your say on

teaching and learning, the disciplinary policy or events around the college. Some class representatives become college ambassadors and help at events like open evenings. Class representatives can make suggestions, complaints and compliments, and we publish ‘You Said, We Did’ posters each term to show what we’ve done in response.

In addition, everyone is welcome to comment or raise a question by emailing [email protected]

“We organised a music festival as part of the course. We learnt a lot, from promotion and management to communication,

teamwork and taking responsibility.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT EMPLOYMENT

Nescot students have the advantage of a dedicated REED NCFE Centre right at the heart of the college. The centre is open year-round, with staff focussed on helping you, whether you’re looking for an apprenticeship, a work placement as part of your course, a part-time job to fit around your studies or a full-time position once you’ve finished studying at Nescot.

The staff can support you in a number of ways, from helping you with your CV to

getting you ready for an interview. Employers tell us that they want recruits who can demonstrate the right ‘mind set’ qualities, like honesty, flexibility, trustworthiness, determination and commitment, so that they can make a real contribution to their businesses. The REED NCFE Centre staff will focus on these qualities during their visits to your tutorials throughout the year, because studies have shown that putting forward the right attitude on your CV triples your chance of getting and keeping the best jobs.

HOW DO NESCOT STUDENTS BENEFIT?

•Preparation for the world of work

•Expert help with finding full and part-time jobs

•Interview preparation

•Help preparing a winning CV

•Finding an apprenticeship with a local employer

•Work placements to help you get the skills employers want

CAREERS INFORMATION AND ADVICE AT NESCOT

Making sure that your course choice matches your career choice and your ultimate goals can be daunting, but at Nescot we have lots of ways of helping you to make a really informed decision.

We have a number of online systems, such as Career Coach and Uexplore, which aim to help you find out more about your options, from getting a job or apprenticeship or doing further study at college or university.

The Nescot Advice and Guidance team can help you to find the best

tool for your research, and can also make you an appointment for one-to-one careers guidance.

USING CAREER COACH TO HELP YOU GET IT RIGHT!

Career Coach is an online tool that can help you plan your career by providing local, accurate and up-to-date information for your chosen area. You can see what kind of training you’d need for a career path you’re interested in, and look at how much you would earn.

One of the first things you should do is to think

about the career or job you want.

Ask yourself:•Once I’ve done this

course will I be able to get a job?

•Will I have skills that are in demand?

•Will I earn enough?

Career Coach shows live data on employment trends, job opportunities and wages for the job or career you are interested in. It’s also a great way to check that your course will take you where you want to go.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS(using Games Design as an example):

1. Find the course you are interested in on our website.

2. Click on the Career Coach link at the bottom of the page to see live information.

3. If you want to do some more research use the ‘Home’ button on Career Coach. You can also explore by searching for courses or careers – you’ll be surprised at what you can find out.

4. To return to our main website just close the tab/window.

CHOOSING YOUR STUDY PROGRAMME

Every full-time student has an individual study programme which brings together the qualifications and skills you need to get the best opportunities.

HELP AND ADVICE ABOUT COURSES AND APPLICATIONS

The Advice and Guidance team are specialists who help students before and

during their time at college. They provide impartial Matrix- accredited advice covering all courses and can help you with your choice. The team will also give you information on courses outside Nescot if appropriate.

programme will depend on what you have already achieved and your next step towards your future career.

You start by choosing your main course, and when we meet you

Study programmes are at least 540 hours spread across the year, and all parts of your programme are compulsory.

Apprenticeships

Doing an apprenticeship is a way of learning a profession by combining studying the knowledge and skills at college with getting real work experience in a paid job.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOING AN APPRENTICESHIP?

X You get the best of both worlds. Earn money and get experience working, while getting the experience, skills and qualifications that employers want you to have.

X Great support. Again, you’ll get the best of both worlds, with all the support you need from both Nescot and your employer.

X Learn at your own pace. As an apprentice, you’re encouraged to take the time you need to understand something, and ask for help if you don’t.

X Do a real job. All apprentices do ‘real’ jobs, usually alongside full-time colleagues, so you can get a sense of what the work will be like once you finish your training.

X Practical experience. By the time you finish your training you’ll not only be qualified to work in the trade, you’ll have an understanding of your role and trade that you can’t find in a book.

X Transferrable skills. Although your training will be specific to your profession, you’ll also gain skills like time management, teamwork and improve your numeracy and literacy skills.

X Great prospects. You could progress to the next apprenticeship level, go into Higher Education, stay with your company or look for a new job elsewhere. Our apprentices tell us their experience helps them stand out, and makes them feel more self-confident.

•Nescot apprentices have won the SATRO Surrey Wates Cup for the last five consecutive years

•A BAE Systems Combat Systems Engineering apprentice won silver in the national WorldSkills UK finals in 2014

•In 2013 a Nescot IT apprentice was highly commended at the London Apprenticeship Awards

WHY NESCOT?

•We’ve been running apprenticeships for more than 60 years

•We have 30 apprenticeships for you to choose from, ranging from Accounting, Business and Computing to Childcare, Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Construction

•Our specialist staff have knowledge spanning nine different industries

“I love everything about carpentry. I like how you’ve got to work things out properly to do the job right. For example, if you’re working on a project and you need a particular technique to finish it then you have to learn it, you can’t just guess. I like how you have to be really accurate - more so than in other trades. In our trade, a few millimetres here and there really matters so you have to have really good attention to detail. The tutors at Nescot make sure you understand the difference it makes to your work and to the job as a whole. I love seeing a project through from the start to the end, and you don’t get that in all trades.”

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN APPRENTICESHIP?

Anyone who is living in England, aged 16 or older, and not already in full-time education, and doesn’t already possess a qualification at Level 4 or above.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

Entry requirements vary between courses, but they are flexible. You will need to show that you are interested in and committed to the course you’ve chosen.

HOW CAN I FIND A JOB?

To do an apprenticeship you need to have a contract of employment in a relevant job. If you don’t have a job, Nescot can help. Please contact Advice & Guidance for further information.

HOW MUCH WILL I EARN AS AN APPRENTICE?

As an apprentice you’re guaranteed to earn at least the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. This is currently £2.73 per hour for apprentices, but will rise to £3.30 in

October 2015. There is no upper limit to what apprentices can be paid, and many are paid much more than the minimum wage.

HOW MUCH DOES DOING AN APPRENTICESHIP COST?

If you are aged between 16 and 18, the government will pay for your training and there will be no cost for you or your employer.

If you’re aged 19 plus, your employer will be asked to contribute towards the cost of your training and the government will pay the rest.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

Most apprentices spend one day a week at Nescot, and the rest working for their employer. At college you’ll be taught in a variety of ways, including:•Practical and theory

classes•One-to-one tutorials,

guidance and support•Practical and written

assessments, with feedback

•Being observed at work by a qualified assessor.

HOW LONG DO APPRENTICESHIPSTAKE?

Apprenticeships are flexible. Your end date will be agreed at the start of your apprenticeship by yourself, your employer and your assessor.

A Level 2 apprenticeship usually takes 12-24 months, a Level 3 is usually 12-36 months, and a Level 4 qualification takes 24 months on average.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I GET?

You will gain a National Vocational Qualification, otherwise known as an NVQ. For example:•Level 2 (Intermediate)

NVQ in Sport, equivalent to five GCSEs at grades A-C;

•Level 3 NVQ in Plumbing, equivalent to two A-Levels; or

•Level 4 NVQ in IT, roughly equivalent to a Foundation Degree.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER MY APPRENTICESHIP?

Depending on your level, you could progress to the next level apprenticeship or to Higher Education. You could look for a

full-time job at your company or elsewhere. Apprentices tell us their real-life work experience helps them stand out, and improves their confidence too.

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT WILL NESCOT GIVE ME?

At Nescot we pride ourselves on making sure you have all the support you need to excel. We have a team of apprenticeship advisors available to support you through your time at Nescot and to answer any questions you have. You’ll be taught by highly-qualified tutors and assessors, who are experts in their profession. If you’re doing functional skills you’ll be taught by a team of English, ICT and maths tutors who are experienced not just in getting you through your exams but in teaching you the skills you’ll use every day in your career.

We have so many animals we can take care of, from farm animals like sheep and pigs to small mammals and reptiles, and some quite unusual species too. We also have a rehoming cattery, which we run in association with the Blue Cross, and I volunteer there too. It feels special because you’re involved in helping change that cat’s life. Business

We are committed to teaching you not just about business but how to have a successful business career.

3 GOOD REASONS

Excellent high grades. In 2014, 71% of Level 3 Business students achieved high grades.

Exciting and real life events support the curriculum, such as Nescot’s Got Talent, the Six Book Challenge and working with local charities.

Teaching is rated good or better.

WHAT TO EXPECT…

X We treat our students as adults and encourage them to take responsibility and pride in their assignments, behaviour, professional conduct and appearance.

X The department is one of the longest established in the area with close links in the business community.

X You will not only learn the rules and skills you need for the business world, but will be given the tools to turn from a student into a business professional.

X You will be taught how to breathe life into a company, by people who have worked in a number of different business organisations. We come from a variety of backgrounds but have one thing in common: we’re committed to turning you into the business professionals of the future.

X We also regularly have guest speakers come in to talk to students about their experiences in the business world. Every one of our students will research, target, apply for, and spend at least a week doing meaningful work experience in an area they find exciting and relevant. You will also take part in organising events for some of your units. This year the Level 3 students organised and ran Nescot’s Got Talent as part of their course, raising a lot of money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

X The department has excellent teaching rooms and IT suites, where you will learn to use the latest software and presentation techniques.

“This year I’ve enjoyed learning the basics about business, but especially the emphasis on real-life examples, because it helps us understand the principles. You don’t really realise how much the concepts of business dictate what goes on around you. At the moment we’re creating a small business, and we’re thinking about everything from our products or services to our business strategy, our human resources needs and the health and safety implications of our plans. I think BTECs are a better foundation for university than A-Levels, because you’re already used to the environment of taking responsibility, and thinking and working for yourself. I think that’s better than just being spoon-fed something in the first place, because it’s more useful for the future and it helps you understand it more.“

Business students raised more than £500 for the Teenage Cancer Trust by holding a talent show.

Nescot’s Got Talent, held in the college theatre on November 6, was organ-ised by the Level 3 group as part of their Managing a Business unit for the second consecutive year.

The students are now finishing their module, but have planned even more events to increase their fundraising total for the cancer charity to more than £1,000.

“We’re really pleased with the money we’ve al-

ready raised, but it’s such a good cause we wanted to do more to help,” said Si-enna Roye, who presented Nescot’s Got Talent with Thomas Dervish.

“So far our ideas include a Christmas cake sale, another raffle and a sponsored walk. Everyone is affected by cancer, so the more we can raise the better.”

This year the audience voted for the winners, with Music Practice student Charlotte Turnbull coming in first place, Computing student Martin Bell in sec-ond and tutor Josh Harris

in third place.The students planned,

organised, promoted and ran open auditions and the show itself, with tasks on the day ranging from pre-senting to doing the sound and lighting.

In addition, they held cake sales, a five-a-side football tournament and a raffle, with the winning numbers drawn at the fi-nals of Nescot’s Got Talent.

Deputy Principal Carol Martin, who watched the show with Vice Principal Fred Carter, said: “It was a great competition – the Business students worked

really hard, the standard of performers was high and the audience supported all the competitors.”

Business student Oliver Swann-Wright, who led the project, added: “It’s been a really tough unit, but it’s been a great experience and we learnt a lot in the planning and during the show.

“We learnt how impor-tant preparation and plan-ning is to a live event, how you have to prepare for the unexpected, and how to work together as a team and communicate well.”

“College is really different from school because you’re treated like an adult, and you get trusted to make your own decisions. One of my favourite things about the course is the emphasis on keeping the children healthy and safe, because that will be the most important part of your job one day. As part of that we learn about nutrition and cooking and we learn how to make meals like soup, chilli and pasta, which is also a good life skill. “

“There’s definitely an emphasis on becoming self-sufficient. When you have a project to do, the teaching staff are there if you need them, and if you ask then they’ll make time to help you understand things. But it’s up to you to do the work and to get things in on time. It was definitely a change from school, but I think it’s a really good way to do things.

The teachers here are friendly and they treat you like adults. They’re really knowledgeable and they have a lot of experience. They’re patient, but they push everyone to work hard and to get the most they can out of the course. “

Carpentry & Joinery

There are two main types of carpentry. Construction carpenters work outside on construction sites, erecting the supporting frames for bridges, roads, dams and buildings. Finishing carpenters work inside commercial and residential buildings, installing final touches such as doors, ceilings, staircases and cabinets.

Carpentry tutors’ specialisms range from restoration work with organisations like the National Trust to working with architects on cutting-edge new builds, joinery, shuttering and moulding, and site foremen on large refurbishments and new estates.

PlasteringIf you want a job in construction, and you can work with your hands quickly and accurately, this could be a good choice for you. You’ll also need to be able to work as part of a team.

“The teaching is good - they make sure we all understand the techniques, and it’s really focussed on being able to do the job, rather than just learning about it. It’s hard, but once you get your head round it then it makes sense. You do get dirty doing plastering, but doing a hands-on course at college means you have an understanding of what the job will actually be like and whether it’s right for you. I like being able to look at a wall at the end and see what I’ve done, and the progress I’ve made through the course.“

“My favourite part of the course was doing The Retreat, a horror film that we shot on location in the Peak District. Until that point we had usually worked in small groups covering what an entire film crew would do, but with The Retreat we treated it like an actual film. As well as having people on every role from stage design to script supervision, we also had to fundraise and promote it ourselves, so we got to learn a bit about that side of the business too. It meant we could be involved in every aspect of the filmmaking, but without being there just to get tea and coffee for people. Then we premiered the film at the BFI in central London. “

The college is one of four in the country to be offering the Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Games, Animation and Visual Effects Skills, which will open in September 2015.

This is a specialist course, which will offer students the broad variety of learning across the areas employers desire, and has a strong focus on teamwork, communication and critical thinking.

The qualification has been developed by the pioneering Next Gen Skills Academy, supported by government and industry investment.

Organisations including Sony, Microsoft, Double Negative and Framestore gave expert advice on the skills employers are looking for, to ensure the course is relevant and up to date.

Industry partners will further support the course by offering mentoring, live briefs and assessment on some elements, to ensure students have a unique insight into the kinds of businesses they could work for in their careers.

“We’re honoured that Nescot was chosen to offer the course, which we think fits in really well with our curriculum,” said Graham

Chalk, Deputy Head of Media.

“More importantly, we know our students are going to benefit hugely from working with experienced teachers and industry experts on a course that’s tailored to giving them the best possible start to their careers.”

Sage Lal Head of Computing, Media and Games, said: “It’s very important that we meet the needs of industry and we work with employers and awarding bodies to create courses that make a real difference to students and their employment

opportunities. We are ready to do our part at NESCOT to transform the UK into the world’s leading talent hub for high-tech industries”.

Assessment will be via exams, blogs, portfolios, research and projects, and units will also cover areas such as emerging technologies and programming, as well working on personal development and career planning.

Students can leave with a solid portfolio of work, which they can use to move on to degree-level study or an apprenticeship.

Nescot has been selected to offer a brand-new qualification aimed at helping develop the next generation of talent for the computer games, animation and visual effects industries.

“The best part of the course so far was where we had to create a text-based game from scratch. We had to go through pre-production, production and evaluation. I loved it, because that’s exactly the kind of thing you’d be doing in a job. There was another unit where we had to research a game that hadn’t been released yet. Both units were a lot of work, but when you enjoy what you’re doing it’s easy to work hard. “

“The best thing about the course is the teaching. My teachers always go the extra mile for the students to help them with whatever they need, but at the same time they teach you to be responsible for your own work. The course is really interesting - I never enjoyed school much, but college has been totally different. Everything’s focussed on the job you’re going to do when you finish - you learn the techniques and the theories, but there’s also a lot of emphasis on being professional, from your appearance to your customer service.”

“One of the best things about training at Nescot is that you have real, paying, hairdressing clients. It means you get a lot of experience working with different hair types as well as different kinds of people. It looks really good on your CV. LiamLevel 3 (Year 2)Music Technology

“The units we’ve done have all been based on things we could be doing in our careers. We did a radio show, live DJ sets, set up a sound system, we did sound design and soundtracks for film, worked with Media students to make a music video, and made a four-track EP. At the end of the year we’ll be doing Nestival, which is a festival held at college with live DJing. We all have really different tastes in music, from dubstep and hip-hop to house and grime, which pushes us to learn from each other. You don’t need to be able to play an instrument or read music, you just need a love of electronic music, and then they can teach you the rest. It really helps to have teachers who have been there and done that, because you can learn from their experience.“

“The teaching is good - we have the support we need, but we don’t have our hands held, because that doesn’t help anyone in the long run. We’re encouraged to develop independence and a strong work ethic, because we’ll need those skills in the industry. We have a few units of Music Technology within the course, which is good because it teaches us to think about things like composition and recording.”

Daniel Wolff emulates great-grandfather with World Games gold

A former Nescot student has followed in his great-grandfather’s footsteps by winning gold for his country at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles.

Daniel Wolff triumphed in the 400m, setting a new personal best time of 56.85, as well as winning a team bronze in the 4x100m relay and coming fifth in the 800m.

Writing on Facebook, the 21-year-old described winning gold as a ‘dream come true’, and said representing Great Britain ‘means the world’ to him.

Daniel’s great-grandfather Frederick Wolff CBE, known as Freddie, ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay in Berlin in 1936, setting a new European record of three minutes and nine seconds with team-mates William Roberts, Godfrey Brown and Godfrey Rampling.

He served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during the Second World War, and was promoted to captain. He was made a CBE in 1975, and died in 1988.

“To be able to follow in my great-grandfather’s footsteps and represent my country is amazing,” Daniel wrote on the official Special Olympics Great Britain Facebook page.

“I try to run like my great-grandfather, and to bring home a gold medal for my country is a dream come true. This is fantastic. To represent Special Olympics Great Britain at the World Games in Los Angeles actually means the world to me.”

Daniel, who completed the Preparation for Life and Work (PfLaW) department’s Transition into Employment programme in June, said before he left for America that he was nervous and excited about the competition, and looking forward to hearing the crowd cheer him on.

He joined PfLaW in 2012, and in December last year he moved from the family home to live independently in his own flat in Cheam.

Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects how a person communicates with and relates to people, and how they make sense of the world around them.

“We are so very proud of Daniel and his phenomenal achievements,” said Cliff Hall, Head of College at Nescot.

“Even being selected to compete in the World Games is amazing, but to come away with a gold and a bronze medal is magnificent. Daniel’s success is very well deserved.”

The World Games is the Special Olympics’ flagship competition, and took place from July 25 to August 2 2015 with 7,000 athletes from 177 countries competing in 28 venues.

“The course is really practical, and the tutors are focussed on teaching you knowledge that will help in your career, not just things for the sake of it or to pass an exam. That means you understand and remember information better, because it’s relevant. For example, we’ve learnt a lot about how muscles and bones work, and the effects of lactic acid and phosphocreatine during exercise. I’ve been able to use that knowledge to help improve my own sports performance.”

“We do a lot of trips, and one of them is right at the start of the year. At first I felt pretty nervous about going away with people I didn’t know, but it was amazing. The experience made us all bond really well, and it gave me the confidence to know I can cope in new situations with people I don’t know, and that’s a useful skill for a police officer.”
