The Physical Internet is based on an open global logistic system founded on
physical, digital, and operational interconnectivity, enabled through
encapsulation of goods, standard interfaces and protocols, with the aim to
move, store, produce, supply and use physical objects throughout the world
such that is economically, environmentally and socially efficient and
sustainable (people, planet, profit).

Technology innovation and information systems depend on the
presence of a competent workforce at all levels
Innovation requires a close match between technology, policy, business
support, human skills development (Aghion et al., 2009), meaning:
o Training: adoption and adequate application of new technologies
o Analytical Skills: Understanding the increasing complexities of modern global
supply networks
Most important limiting factor: Quality & availability of human competencies
o Existing activities increasingly demand higher competence levels (truck
driving, warehouse processes)
o New activities arise, typically with a high competence requirement
(IT systems management, logistics controlling)
“Knowledge Accumulation Gap“ arises: humans are not able to
accumulate knowledge over generations, as opposed to machines
and computers that are increasingly able to do so
