Course Description: This course is an introduction to the University of Southern Indiana and the undergraduate experience with a specific focus on academic success, campus involvement, and community engagement. Students will discuss issues of value and behavior in the college setting, discover what resources are available to them, and learn what it means to integrate themselves into the campus and surrounding communities.

Course objectives: Understand the value of the full higher educational experience and participate in some

aspect of university life beyond the classroom. Understand the self-direction and motivation required to succeed and develop a plan

for achieving academic goals. Understand how a USI education applies to community issues and engage in an activity

with stakeholders beyond the university.

Implementation:This course is designed to help bridge the transition between high school and college. You will develop skills and identify campus resources that will help you achieve academic success at USI. On campus and off, you will engage with student groups and community organizations, exploring opportunities for personal growth as an active member of the USI and Evansville

communities. Finally, you will begin to identify professional goals and map out the coursework, training, or extracurricular activities necessary to achieve your goals.

Attendance & Participation:Student discussions are at the heart of this course, and for that reason, regular attendance and active participation in the seminar and cultural events are required. You are allowed a maximum of two absences (excused or unexcused). For each additional absence, your final grade will be reduced by one letter grade. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what the homework was and come prepared for the next class. Assignments must be submitted by the due date listed on your syllabus, even if you are absent.

To maintain a collegial classroom environment, you are expected to Arrive on time (excessive tardiness will count toward an absence) Complete homework assignments before arriving in class Turn off and stow all electronic devices including cell phones and laptops Treat your classmates and instructor with respect

Required work (details will be provided in class)1. Eagle Experience – completion of online modules2. Completion of MapWorks Survey3. Completion of Academic Plan4. Participation in all cultural events5. Daily homework assignments: readings, attendance at select university events etc.6. Written reflections

Final Grade:Completion of Eagle Experience, MapWorks and Academic Plan 30%Homework, Participation, and Written Reflections 30%Cultural events participation 30%Final (Concluding reflection paper) 10%

Course grades will be based on the following scale:90 to 100 = A 70 to 76 = C87 to 89 = B+ 67 to 69 = D+80 to 86 = B 60 to 66 = D76 to 79 = C+ less than 59 = F

Academic Integrity:Plagiarism and cheating of any form are serious offenses and may result in an F for the assignment, the course, or expulsion from the university.

Notification of Participation in University Sanctioned Events:Students who must miss class to participate in a university sanctioned event are expected to notify me in advance and complete the work, including tests, in advance of the absence. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with me in advance regarding their absences and to determine a schedule for make-up work
