This follows six years of dedicated work by Town Council staff and the volunteers at Ferryhill Town Youth. These efforts enabled the Town Council to secure over £1 million in grant funding to fund the whole project at no cost to local taxpayers whatsoever. Council Leader Councillor Pat McCourt said “What makes the efforts of the staff and in particular Executive Officer Jamie Corrigan unique is that he has, using his expertise, managed to secure grants to cover all the costs to build the new facilities. Some other much bigger Council’s have managed to get some funding for similar projects but none to our knowledge have managed to secure all of the funds from grants, saving local taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds. This is not the first project and nor will it be the last where the Executive Officer has been able to do this. My personal thanks go to him on behalf of all local taxpayers.” The new facility will contain six changing rooms, new public toilets for all park users, as well as six completely reconstructed football pitches for all the Towns budding footballers. Mayor of Ferryhill Councillor Eileen Martin said “I am delighted we have been able to work so closely in partnership with Ferryhill Town Youth to deliver this project, they do so much good work for the Town it is only right that we support them in this way, it was nice to see work commencing after all the hard work put in by Town Council staff and the volunteers at Ferryhill Town Youth.” Rita Foster President of Ferryhill Town Youth Football club said “This new facility will mean that we can attract even more young people to play football in what will be a fantastic 21st century facility. We will also be able to have many more activities in the new recreation area such as a youth club. I can’t wait to get in there! My thanks go to Ferryhill Town Council for all their efforts to ensure this happened and the Football Foundation and the LIP scheme for providing the funding.” BREAKING LINKS, PROVIDING SUPPORT Breaking Links is a new organisation that is commencing operations in the Ferryhill area. The group aims to support parents who have children with ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or other related learning difficulties, such as Dyslexia. Brian Smith, of Breaking Links, said “I am looking for parents in the area who are currently trying to get their child a statement so they can get the right support in and outside of the classroom.” Mr Smith is also looking for other parents who have gone through the process, particularly parents who feel they may be able to help others in this position. In addition, Brian would like to hear from people who have suffered from the conditions themselves, who may like to help the organisation grow. Brian may be contacted by e-mail breaking. [email protected] or on 07922446528”. NEED HELP BACK TO WORK? Sedgefield Employability Consortium (SEC) is offering practical support to help people get back into work. A spokesperson said, “If you receive incapacity benefit, income support or are aged 50+ on a means tested benefit we can help you. We can offer you practical help.” SEC can help in a number of ways. The group offers information about registered childcare in the area, gives assistance in writing CV’s and provides access to facilities and training. SEC aims to remove the barriers that prevent people from gaining employment, and the group provides support during the first few months after a client begins employment. Albert, Arthur, Prospect and South View,Were the names of all the streets I knew,This is where I lived and played,Married, brought up my children and stayed.

Today the streets are not the same, Gone are the days when I knew everyone by name,The community spirit has long gone,Familiar faces gone one by one.

Few remain with memories to share,Wonder how the others did fare,Do they remember the pit heaps,Or the red rocks at the end of the streets?

Do they remember Baileys Field,The hut where we got our fi sh and chips,Gypsy Lauren, the cowslip fi eld,The Black river and not forgetting Vaiseys’ fi eld?

Blackberrying with tin cans,Coming home with red stained hands,Tatey picking with all our friends,Wondering when the long rows would end.

Lots of memories to keep for old time’s sake,But even lots more left to make,Wonder what the future will hold,And new memories to be told.

When he was 15 years old he left school and started work at Berriman’s TV’s in the village, where he met his lovely wife to be, Hazel, who also worked at Berriman’s.Stan was a TV engineer for 38 years before, in 1983, the couple began trading at Ferryhill and Spennymoor’s markets, selling greeting cards, second hand books and silk fl owers. Later, they had a stall

in Chester-le-Street, Crook and Bishop Auckland.Stan and Hazel, who have lived in Chilton since they were married, would like to thank everyone in the Ferryhill area for their special loyalty and friendship over many years. The couple said, “When we retire we will really miss

the regular weekly chat and friendly faces.” They intend to cease trading early in 2010.Stan is shortly due to start volunteering as a driver for Ferryhill Resource Centre. He will be taking children to school and he will drive old people to their appointments, wherever they may be.

Stan and Hazel: ready for well-deserved retirement.

J. Moffatt writes in to debate the possibility of rent reductions for Sedgefi eld Borough Residents, the handover of council housing stock and the offi cial opening of new play equipment...

Dear Editor,In reply to my previous letter regarding possible rent reductions for Sedgefi eld Borough Housing tenants, Chilton Labour councillor Brian Avery (Chapter 04/09/09) gave the indication that he would not be pressing S.B.H. to implement

government set rent rebates. Unlike our Labour councillors, I will campaign to ensure any rent rebate entitlements are passed on to the S.B.H. tenants of Chilton. Also, I would like Chilton’s councillors Potts and Avery to show The Chapter readers the documentation in the housing stock transfer prospectus, which stated there would be a substantial land grab and that the Housing Association homes of Chilton would be receiving none of the

initial £16million investment because unsurprisingly I could not fi nd these details. Finally on the front page of The Chapter (29/08/09) under the heading ‘Gala Day Success’ it states that “on the town green, the new play equipment was offi cially opened by Mayor Len Potts and his wife.”I am somewhat perplexed because the site is fenced off and resembles a building site.Yours Sincerely,J. Moffat, Chilton.

IPCC INVESTIGATE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING

FERRYHILL MAN’S DEATHThe IPCC (Independent Police Complaints Commission) is investigating the manner in which Durham Constabulary responded to concerns about the welfare of a man who was subsequently found dead.Robert Green, 48, of Ferryhill, was found dead by the ambulance service at his home at approximately 1.40pm on Sunday 23rd August 2009. SUSPENDED SENTENCE IMPOSEDMagistrates at Newton Aycliffe warned Ashley Scott Whitwell “to take stock of himself” and that it had been due to his age and the fact that he was now in work that they had not imposed a custodial sentence. The 20 year old from Salisbury Crescent, West Cornforth had earlier been convicted of assaulting Emma Sirrell and Tracey Raw after a full trial. The defendant had entered his former partner’s home at around 2.30 p.m. on 11th January and gone upstairs.

When told to leave Whitwell had head-butted Miss Sirrell and had then dragged her mother Tracey Raw down the stairs by her legs. He then punched his victim several times causing a range of injuries. Whilst on bail for these offences, Whitwell had further compounded matters when he was arrested for riding an off road Honda motorbike on Garmondsway Road. The defendant was already disqualifi ed from driving and yet initially pleaded not guilty

to the charge. The Court handed Whitwell a four weeks custodial sentence for the assaults and twelve weeks for the driving offences, both suspended for eighteen months. A further 12 months driving disqualifi cation was imposed, with immediate effect, £150 compensation ordered to be paid to the assault victims, an eighteen months supervision order with 100 hours unpaid work and £200 costs were also included in the sentence.

CHRISTMAS SHOE BOX APPEAL UNDERWAY

The Sylvia Kelly Memorial Christmas Shoebox Appeal is once again working hard to spread joy and compassion this Christmas. Every year the group send packages to those less fortunate, sending knitted wares and boxes full of goodies to children in Eastern Europe and Africa. Although the main drive will take place in November, it is not too early to send your unwanted items, which may be the only gift these less privileged children receive this year.Ideal items include toys or something to play with such as a ball, bear, yo-yo, building blocks or puppets, educational supplies such as felt pens, pencils, sharpeners and notebooks or hygiene supplies, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap or comb. You can also include something to eat or wear, such as sweets, gloves, hats, sunglasses, scarves and bangles. They also ask for £2 donation with each shoe box to cover the cost of getting them there. The appeal, which has been running for many years, relies on the hard work of its members, as well as public generosity, a spokesperson for the group elaborated, he said, “The annual Sylvia Kelly Memorial Christmas Shoe box Appeal is well under way, with our team members busy collecting and covering empty shoe boxes and sourcing items for fi lling. Of course, our core team members work the year round, as when we have delivered over our boxes to the International charity Samaritans Purse in mid November we are already planning for the next year. Our intrepid knitting team, from Tow Law/Firtree, are already delivering large consignments

of knitted garments, and we appeal to any one with spare balls of wool to kindly donate them to the cause. Last year we broke our record by handing over 1280 fi lled boxes and £700.00 to help with transportation.“Once again we appeal to the public to support our efforts to get as many boxes as we are able to send to countries in Eastern Europe and Africa. It is always thanks to the public generosity that we are able to make such a signifi cant effort to help those more needy than ourselves. Since the beginning of our work we are always mindful of our purpose typifi ed by our slogan 'Make Your Christmas Happy By Making a Child Happy'.As in previous years, the group are happy to receive contributions at any time, but organisers will be making their main effort, producing boxes in Ferryhill Methodist Church, in the week commencing Monday 9th November at 6.00pm each evening. The

group’s spokesperson added, “We would extend a cordial invitation to attend the church service on Sunday 15th of November when it is given over to dedicating the boxes before dispatching them on their way to the regional collection centre in Consett.“To all members of the public who wish to contribute in any way to this worthwhile cause please contact Bob Kelly on 01388 720253 who can offer guidance on which items are acceptable for fi lling boxes. Donations of money are used to help with transportation and buying additional items for fi lling".
