Mr Shaun Clarke with Archbishop Wilson, Mrs Clarke and students in the JC Chapel (May, 2016)

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Friends and Caregivers

CBC acknowledges that we are meeting on the traditional country of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. We recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land. We acknowledge that they are of continuing importance to the Kaurna people living today.

Justice and Peace

This week I share with you significant information, which speaks to the College community of what it means to be a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice tradition.

Congratulations

The College community congratulates former CBC staff member and current Chief Executive Officer of the SA Certificate of Education Dr Neil McGoran on his appointment as the new Director of Catholic Education SA. Neil brings significant educational leadership and deep faith to the role and we wish Dr McGoran every blessing in this new role.

I also congratulate College Deputy Shaun Clarke on his 2018 appointment as Principal of Ignatius Park College, Townsville; as per the letters below:

Dear Parents and Staff,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Mr Shaun Clarke has been appointed to the position of Principal of Ignatius Park College, Townsville, effective from the start of the 2018 school year.

As you know, Shaun has been a staff member at Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) since 1998 and is currently the Deputy Principal of the College. Shaun has also held a number of other senior leadership roles in Catholic schools including Acting Principal and Religious Education Co-ordinator. He is also a member of the College Board.

Shaun is an outstanding educator and in 2007 was awarded the Archbishop’s Award for Excellence in Catholic education. While he will be sorely missed at CBC, it is gratifying to know that Shaun will not be lost to Edmund Rice education with Ignatius Park College also being a member school of Edmund Rice Education Australia.

Edmund Rice Education Australia will now embark on the important task of finding a suitable replacement for Shaun in the role of Deputy Principal. As CBC enjoys an excellent reputation in the Catholic community in Adelaide and across Australia, I am confident that a leader of the highest calibre will be appointed to the role. I anticipate that the recruitment process for the position will be concluded by the end of Term 3 when a further announcement will be made.

In the meantime, on behalf of all members of the Edmund Rice Education Australia community, I warmly congratulate Shaun on this significant appointment and wish him well as he embarks on the next exciting phase of his professional career in Townsville.

With my best wishes,

Dr Wayne Tinsey Executive Director, EREA

Dear friends of CBC,

I write to add my sincere congratulations to Deputy Principal Mr Shaun Clarke on his appointment in 2018, as Principal of an Edmund Rice Education Australia College, Ignatius Park Townsville.

It has been a long-standing term of endearment by staff that Shaun has purple and white blood flowing in his veins. He was educated at CBC Wakefield Street, taught at the College, held the positions of Religious Education Coordinator and Deputy, educated his two sons at CBC and worked alongside his wife Caroline in her capacity as Executive Director Early Years Learning.

Shaun leaves a deep and loving 19-year legacy at CBC. I pay tribute to his pioneering and visionary leadership in the areas of Faith, Education, Administration, and Community. His work in Asia literacy, strategic planning, boys education, staff support and collaboration with the Old Collegian and parent networks are just a few of the many examples where Shaun has left his indelible mark on CBC.

On behalf of a grateful community, I thank God for Shaun’s presence at CBC. He is a man of deep humility, wisdom and talent. CBC will remain forever blessed by his presence and legacy. I offer every blessing to Shaun and his family for the exciting future ahead.

Yours sincerely

Formal Apology to the Victims of Abuse

In a letter to the community by EREA Executive Director Dr Tinsey on February 8 2017 he stated the following:

• We have all been collectively shocked, dismayed and ashamed at the scope and nature of the abuse that has been uncovered within our Church with the Royal Commission.

• This is a difficult time to identify as Catholic and as staff members of schools where crimes of abuse may have been identified very publically.

• Even though since 2007 our schools have been governed by Edmund Rice Education Australia and not by the Christian Brothers,

we regularly celebrate the wonderful legacy of the vast majority of the Brothers in the formation of our young.

• Sadly, we must also accept the shadow side of the Congregation and our collective heritage. I know that the Christian Brothers are deeply apologetic for the ways that our contemporary school communities are named and implicated in the crimes of the past.

Last Week EREA offered a formal acknowledgement of the crimes of the past and the plight of the survivors of abuse at the hands of both Christian Brothers and lay staff in our schools. The very moving apology was attended by victims of abuse, EREA principals and representatives from our schools across Australia, EREA staff and Christian Brothers. The message was very clear – we are sorry! Never Again must we allow this to happen to our precious children.

A transcript of the apology follows:

The Apology by Dr Wayne Tinsey Executive Director Dr Wayne Tinsey EREA June 2017 Canberra.

In this time of Pentecost – a time when the spirit provides us with the courage to find a new voice - we, the leaders of Edmund Rice Education Australia, on behalf of our communities offer the following apology. Today we begin a journey of major change by publicly acknowledging the sexual abuse of students in our schools; some dead, some alive, some unknown:

Today we directly acknowledge the scarring harm of sexual abuse as abhorrent, sinful, shameful and disgraceful; and we also acknowledge that whatever was done can never be undone. For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the helplessness, powerlessness, fear, guilt and shame that has been, and remains part of a victim’s life when, as a child, they recall feeling no control over their lives and even blamed themselves for what had been done to them. For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the fact that young people in our schools were betrayed in their adolescence where they had every expectation of, and needed nurturing and protection. For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the anger which our young students have felt, have shown and may still harbour against their abusers and others who they feel failed to protect them. For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the sadness, grief and sense of loss felt by victims, especially when the perpetrator was loved and trusted by our young people and their families. For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the alarming statistics of serial sexual abuse, assault and molestation of young people in our schools by Christian Brothers, Clergy and lay staff – For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge that the pain inflicted and suffered continues to have ongoing devastation on victims in their adulthood as partners, parents, extended family and leaders in their careers and communities – and that there is no hiding this pain – For this we apologise… Today we directly acknowledge the unimaginable pain endured by families, friends and loved ones who have been broken by the ingrained lasting trauma, often hidden, of each and every

unspeakable criminal indignity and personal violation – For this we apologise…

And finally, most significantly, today is the day we directly acknowledge that there has been a history of denial, secrecy, suppression and diminution in relation to sexual abuse crimes. Barriers have been placed which have hindered redress. Victims have not had a real voice. Rightful acknowledgment has not been given to those crying for justice. We have not spoken or acted as Edmund Rice and the Gospels would have demanded – For this we apologise…

In the knowledge that, to many, the offering of an apology at this time may seem unhelpful, even possibly adding to the pain in some cases, we offer it sincerely in the hope that it is seen as a significant and necessary step towards healing, reconciliation and ongoing redress. In the true spirit of Pentecost, we pray that Edmund Rice Education Australia has found a new voice in laying stronger foundations for support, re-connection, inclusion and ongoing care for all who have suffered in this way. I am sorry. We are sorry. We commit to a liberated future.

Dr Tinsey’s brave and heartfelt apology was deeply moving. I affirm Dr Tinsey’s loving, courageous and compassion to the victims of abuse and to the Church, which we love and serve.

Conclusion

God bless Mr Clarke, God bless all who enter our CBC gates and God bless Catholic education in the Edmund Rice tradition.

Mr Noel MifsudPrincipal

Year 12 English Excursion to 1984On Tuesday 23rd May, attentive students from two Year 12 English classes journeyed to Her Majesty’s Theatre to witness and examine a fantastic play, depicted from George Orwell’s eminent and unnerving novel; 1984. The grand performance outlined the significant aspects of the novel and intertwined each and every scene together in order to produce a cohesive interpretation of Orwell’s text: Winston Smith, a common prole within the superstate of Oceania, profoundly repressed by the cruel totalitarian regime, attempts to determine the future of his existence. During the revelation of the Party, he efforts to save its people from ‘thought’ deprivation by theorising with undeleted history. Eventually, Winston is captured, himself and his thoughts are left hopeless, and Big Brother is bolstered to prevail. Moreover, abrupt and ear-splitting sound was utilised along with prominent scintillating light in order to capture the thrilling intensity of the performance. The purpose of scrutinising the performance was to provide each student with relevant and plentiful information prior to the commencing of their assignment; Theatre Review Essay.

4 PURPLE PATCHES

BASKETBALL

Open A BasketballCBC 64 defeated Blackfriars Priory 40

It was critical that we played well for all four quarters and the lads did just that. The first and the third period was excellent but the second and fourth was a more robust tussle. There were some outstanding passages of play and I was particularly impressed with the combination passes between players in the turnovers and under the basket. This was emphasised at training with the message that it does not give the opposition to organise defence nor know who to guard in defence. Another feature of the game, which impressed was the quick hands from CBC and the scrambling for any loose ball. Our defensive rebounding improved as the game progressed but we still need to concentrate on that in future games, particularly in defence

The stakes are high this year for CBC. We are currently at the top of our division and pool. We have to secure as many wins as possible in the next five games to retain this position, which then automatically guarantees us a spot in the semis and hopefully, the grand final on 19th August. The next five qualifying games are against Norwood Morialta High School, Adelaide High School, Westminster School, Scotch College and Pulteney Grammar School. With this in mind, we also have to prepare for the Intercollegiate game at the end of the season against Blackfriars Priory School.

Daniele and Dang played limited court-time due to injury and soreness but contributed when they were on. We will be assessing them for the next game.

Jaudzems was outstanding in all areas of the game with rebounds, drives and defence. He amassed a 22-point score in this game with an average of 15 points per game thus far. He is playing with superb consistency. Dalwood also had a good consistent game displaying an intelligent tap of the ball over the opposition player with a great pass to Jaudzems to score. He is also credited with a great reject, aggressive drives and excellent rebounds.

Geisler has improved in leaps and bounds, worked hard with the court-time he had, and gaining in confidence and skill with each game to score. He hit 10 points this game but in my estimation, his real contribution was also with good intercepts, working in combination with Dalwood and rebounding under the offensive basket. M Machar used his height advantage well to get the offensive and defensive rebounds. This enabled him to score 12 points to add to the scoreboard. He made good position in defence and cuts to the basket at the other end to present a scoring option. Tavian had a very good game with defence and some very good hand to deny the opposition player the pass. He organised defence in court and that was appreciated. Tavian also

ensured that he was available for the pass at the safety position and cut to the basket to present a scoring option.

A Machar was quiet in the first but made a huge impact in the fourth quarter hitting 3 threes and a beautiful two point “floater” shot. He had good hands in defence and passed off well. Navarro had a great game in defence with four credited incredible intercepts and pass the ball on to runners who scored. I was particularly impressed with his work ethic in defence. A highlight for me with Joel was in the third quarter when he pass the ball out on an intercept, kept cutting to receive the ball back to score.

Best Players: Raimonds Jaudzems, Lachlan Geisler, Oliver Dalwood, Joel Navarro, Malith Machar.

My thanks to parents and student supporters. Also as always thanks to Kathy Carrieri for scoring. It was also such a pleasure to have a 2016 Open A player in Callum Adcock (Number 11) who turned up to support the team. He was a great help in the team warm-up as well.

Next Week: Against Norwood Morialta High School at CBC at 10.30 am.

Point Scorers: Will G 20pts, James M 19pts, Kobi J 8pts, Jesse B 6pts, Brodie W 4pts, Austin T 1pts

A great game and a good start saw the team start strongly and were able to maintain their form throughout the game. A full court press for the entire game caused many turnovers from Blacks, and this good defence gave the boys many opportunities to maintain the lead. Austin’s sharp passes set up many points. James and Will’s good positioning lead them to be our top scorers, which ensured the teams strong win.

Overall, a great team game, and shows the true potential we can achieve when working together as a team. Many thanks to Tuesday Udel for doing the score sheet.

Will Goldsmith

Middle B BasketballCBC 38 defeated Blackfriars Priory 23

This week’s game for the Middle B team was great as we all put up a fight till the end up against Blackfriars. Our team put up some excellent defence, applying pressure creating turnovers and many interceptions. A couple people come in to mind when I thought about our defence, Jake, Ryan, Abhinav and Awak. Abhinav

applied a hard defence and supplying a few blocks, similar to last week. Awak, locking down the offence concluded to many turnovers, and Jake and Ryan being tall created many scoring opportunities with their rebounds. Our offence was also great, were we attack the basket well, but on the other hand we need some improvement in our shooting. Our overall, our gameplay gave us a great win over Blackfriars and we defended our home ground. Written by Cooper Smith

Thank you to all parents who support the boys by getting them to the matches and cheering them on. Also a big thank you to Mr Mundy for scoring during the game.

Mr Emmanuel GaitanerisCoach

Middle Basketball C CBC 37 defeated Blackfriars Priory 13

A slow but good start in the first quarter getting a decent lead on the opposition. During the second quarter, the team really picked up the pace and got a strong lead. Defence was decent and Blackfriars only snuck in four points. The third quarter was when we started to miss some of our shots but kept a solid lead. By the fourth quarter, we had it in the bag and focused more on defence. Overall, everyone did their parts and played really well. Defence was solid, our shots were going in and we managed to win. Well done!

FOOTBALL

Year 4/5 FootballCoromandel Valley 14.13 (97) defeated CBC 1.1 (7)

We have realised over the last few weeks and really noticeable at last week’s carnival that the opposition teams are made up of Year 4s and 5s, where as CBC’s team is made up of Year 4s only. As a result, the opposition are faster, stronger and taller.

This team is playing the best football they have ever played, keeping in mind they have been invincible for the past 2 years. They are not losing from a lack of trying. Their tackling and their attack on the ball is unbelievable.

This opportunity this year where this team will meet strong opposition every week is that they will developer faster and be better for it in future. Already we can see players working harder and attacking the ball and player with ferocity.

Due to the recent decision that all students from Years 7–10 may now wear their sports uniform on the days in which they have practical PE lessons, the following amendment will now apply to all students from Reception–10.

Amendment to School Uniform PolicyAll students from years R–10 wearing sports uniform to school on days when they have practical PE lessons, must all wear the full CBC Track Suit consisting of a Zip Jacket, Long Track Pants and Purple Polo to and from school during Terms 2 and 3.

On days where students do not have PE Practical lessons but have sports training after school, they are NOT permitted to wear their PE Uniform to school but must bring it with them in their CBC Sports Bag and change into their appropriate training clothing.

PE shorts may be worn under the Track Pants during Terms 2 & 3 and may be worn instead of long Track Pants during Terms 1 and 4.

Due to this amendment, and to facilitate the transition from PE Shorts to Long Track Pants, all students ordering and paying for Track Pants prior to 16/6/17 can purchase at a discounted price of $55.00 down from $66.00.

Students are being granted a grace period of 4 weeks to facilitate this amended policy.

If you have any queries, please contact the Uniform Shop on 8400 4249 during opening hours.

5PURPLE PATCHES

Players like Harrison, Thomas, Joel, Anthony, Travis and Orville are not giving the opposition an inch and are ferocious at the ball. Ryan, Diego, Kosta, Daniel and Jackson are not fussed by the size of the opposition, they just rack up possession, winning inside ball, outside ball and just never stop running – exceptional!! Lane took a couple spectacular marks, kicking all of CBC’s score.

Johnny, Michael, Harry, Oscar, Giuliano, Callum, Jack, Cooper, Morris and Marios work hard all game to contribute to the team effort, making sure they do what they can for the team.

Guys, be proud of yourself, because you are playing your best football ever.

Thanks to Isaac Rosewarne for Goal Umpiring.

Mr Ray Chiaramonte and Mr Chris NesbittCoaches

Year 3 Div 2 FootballCBC 6.7 (43) defeated Rose Park 6.4 (40)

An outstanding team effort this week to secure their first win for the season. The boys worked really well as a team and all the training is evident and is starting to reap rewards. The team was ably led this week by Captain Cameron Richter. It was great to see the generous sportsmanship in our boys once again, as they rotated through to play on the opposition side to make the numbers even.

After a warm up in the first quarter, the score board was put in motion. Nikita opened the scoreboard for CBC with the first goal, and added to his total with a second shortly after that. Other goal kickers were Sebastian Higham, who added two more goals to the score board and was supported by singles from Sebastian Chen and Pablo Martinez-Vazquez.

Best on field were Pablo, Jordan Tongerie and Matias Guider, with a stunning performance by Sebastian Higham gaining him the most improved player for this week.

Special mention to two other players, Lachlan Pusey and Austin Wilks, who have displayed continued improvement in ball management over the last few games.

What a wonderful display of support from our parents this week! With their constant words of encouragement and direction the boys are gaining in confidence and display their skills in team work on the field well.

Thanks also to our wonderful coach, Aaron Medson, who continues to drive the boys towards the team ethic and is developing the increase in skill level with the ball that we have seen over the past four weeks.

Mrs Iva DentonTeam Manager

Year 2 FootballCBC 12.3 (75) defeated Pulteney Grammar 8.7 (55)

Pulteney came out strong in the 1st quarter kicking 4.3, giving them a convincing lead to the game. But, this certainly didn’t stop the hunger of our CBC boys.

After changing up positions in the second quarter, the boys found their feet. Dante Russo and Lucas Sheridan spread the field and opened up space, and with Liam Huscroft and Angus Dungey playing tough defense, our CBC boys held even with Pulteney till the last quarter.

During the last quarter Lucas Sheridan was unstoppable kicking 4 goals (some of those from the mid-field), taking CBC into the lead. This called for a victorious team huddle where the boys sang the school song proudly.

A special mention to the other goal kickers this week; Dante Russo and Francesco Bueti.

Thank you to Marko Bogovic, Aiden Monahan, Hunter Christensen, and Hayden Haywood for volunteering to play a quarter for the opposition.

Well done on a great comeback CBC!

SOCCER

Year 10B SoccerWestminster 7 defeated CBC 0

Best Players: Benjamin Cirocco, Oliver Hoptroff

Despite Westminster defeating CBC seven goals to nil this week, the final score is not indicative of how well the team played. While in previous weeks it has taken the first 10–15 minutes to get the team working cohesively, this happened almost straight from the start of the match. The tightened and coordinated defence, as well as much improved marking of players was present early on, and continued throughout the match. While a strengthened defensive formation left us weaker in the midfield, the team adapted to this issue in the second half and made two excellent plays up the field as a team, showing thought in their passing and creating a genuine threat to the opposition. Although the final result was not ideal by any means, the goals scored were not obtained cheaply, and the team should be proud of their efforts against a top quality A level opposition.

Mr Brett LinkeTeam Manager

Year 9A SoccerCBC 3 drew with Sacred Heart 3

CBC chose to play defensively for the first half of the game and found they were up against a skilled opposition. During that period Sacred Heart managed to score two goals as well as one that wasn’t counted because their player was offside. CBC didn’t score any goals in that first half despite several good attempts.

After the half time break, the score was 2-nil with Sacred Heart ahead. CBC came back on ready to attack. The team played very well but couldn’t seem to get a chance to score, then fifteen minutes in the opportunity came and the score was now 2-1. CBC worked hard with all players maintaining their positions and soon CBC had scored two more goals. The score was now 3-2 our way. This rapid escalation in the score must have given Sacred Heart a bit of a stir and they then tried very hard to balance things up. In the final moments of the game you could feel the tension in the air and then Sacred Heart orchestrated a series of passes that resulted in them scoring the last goal and equalizing the score at 3 all. While it was hard to swallow that we’d equalized while being so close to an outright win the A team made sure this will be a game to remember. Well Done!

At Saturdays game – the boys started the game positive with smooth passes and transitioning well from defence to attack with the first 15 mins the game most of the play was in CBC’s half. Josh Menillo, Franco Caruso and Christian Lacanale controlling the midfield. CBC rewarded with a goal to Calvin Phillips after an assist from Ben Saliba.

The next 5 mins the play was in Immanuel College half and they were rewarded with a goal that no keeper could have stopped.

After the kick-off, we regained control and minutes from half time CBC were awarded a free kick from well outside the box. Mason Ayoubi stepped up and took a wonderful free kick which dipped into the top corner giving CBC a 2-1 lead at half time.

Made some position changes at half time, switching Franco Caruso & Mason Ayoubi to the middle of defence, and Johnny D’Arrigo into the midfield.

This had an immediate effect as few minutes into the second half, Josh Menillo released a beautiful ball to Lucas Sebastiano, playing his first game for the year, who scored an excellent goal– giving CBC a 3 -1 lead.

CBC continued the pressure and Josh Menillo ran into a 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper and superbly placed it for a goal – with the score line now 4-1.

With 10 minutes to go Immanuel were awarded a penalty – which they converted and maintained the pressure and scored another goal – making it 4-3 with 5 mins to go.

The boys dug deep and withstood the pressure to come away with a well-deserved win.

TABLE TENNIS

Open Table TennisCBC defeated Pembroke

Well, we had to get over last week. When the going gets tough the tough start training, and we did. So with four teams playing home we used the thirty minutes waiting time to smooth over the edges of memory.

A team was constructed to give every stayer a hit. We chopped and changed and let a few off early until we were done. It seems that the top end of the card need Hungry Jack’s after a victory. ‘They come, they play, they win, and they go and eat junk food’, has become some sort of mantra which leaves the packing up and cleaning the gym, to the true believers. Maybe table tennis isn’t life skills but I’m still considering offering that Year 10 from St Mary’s a spot at the next whole school assembly to tell us that maybe it is.

Yes, we won well; seventeen to three.

We considered a later train, the bye next week and how to get young men to stay back to finish off what they have started, as we wheeled our bicycles down Frome Road into the fading light.

Open B Table TennisCBC defeated Blackfriars Priory

The Open Bs had their strongest challenge this week, coming from Blackfriars. The boys still won overall and the scoreboard was flattering with 14 wins to 6, bit this doesn’t tell the tale of just how close many of these sets were, with more games coming down to tiebreakers this week that nearly all the rest of the season combined. For the first time we lost more doubles games than we won and there was only two player (James Cerone) to play all sets without dropping a game. The future still looks bright for the Open Bs though, with several strong players from lower divisions attempting to break into the open squad. With so many players looking to play in the side at present, next week’s bye may be an opportunity to have some tryouts at training. Apart from this though the boys have Friday night off for the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend.

Middle B2 Table TennisCBC 16 defeated Pembroke School 4

Well done CBC! Another amazing set of games including doubles, singles and reverse singles matches. The boys won 16 games to 4 games against Pembroke this week at home.

Jack C played very well winning 11 games to 3 in his singles match and won 11 games to 2 in his doubles match. Domenic and Joseph also played well in their doubles matches; 11 games to 5 and 11 games to 2.

Thank you to all the families who came to support the players. The boys trained hard with coach John this week and it was good to see everyone at training again on Wednesday. Thank you boys.
