SUNY Cortland Defense

Series History•The Saxons are 30-12-1 while playing SUNY Cortland. The two teams started squaring off in 1940 when Alex Yunevich and the Saxons took home a 21-0 victory to open the season.

The most points AU has scored against Cortland came in 1978 when the Saxons won 48-14 in Yunevich Stadium. Since 2010, AU is 3-2 versus the Red Dragons, splitting over the last two years. In 2016, the Saxons won 41-28 in Yunevich Stadium, continuing onto the Empire 8 Championship. The 2017 matchup fell in favor of Cortland who won 20-17 in overtime. The Saxons and theRedDragonsfinishedtiedforsecondplaceintheEmpire8.

Last Game for the Saxons•AU is coming off a 21-13 loss to Ithaca College last week in Alfred, NY. The game was one of the D3Football.com featured games of the week and it did not disappoint. Both teams were receiving top-25 votes heading into the game.

AU held onto a 13-0 lead heading into half time, stopping the Bombers in the redzonemultipletimestothefirsthalfshutout.However,Ithacabouncedback and shutout the Saxons in the second half en route to a 21-13 victory.

Quarterback Ben Burk threw for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Bothofhistouchdownswerethrowntofirst-yearRobert Smith Jr. who leads the Saxons with 176 yards receiving and three touchdowns in two weeks. BurkandSmithJr.connectedforthefirsttimeduringAU’sopeningdriveofthe game. On the second play from scrimmage, Burk hit the streaking Smith Jr. who burned down the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown. The two paired up again in the second quarter when Smith Jr. brought down a 19-yarder despite getting hammered by two Ithaca defenders in the endzone. Smith Jr.

The AU run game was subdued against Ithaca in comparison to the week one win over Thiel where the Saxons ran for 247 yards. Nas Smith led the Saxons with 36 yards on 12 attempts (3.0 yards per carry) while Burk ran for 28 yards.

The Saxons were led by junior Nick Milgate and senior Cole Reed with 18 and 17 tackles, respectively. Both marks land the players in the top-10 all-time for tackles in a game at AU. Milgate is tied for ninth all-time while Reed is tied for 10th. Reed also pulled in an interception and a pass break-up to earn his second Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week honor. He currently leads the E8 with 28 total tackles while Milgate ranks third with 26 tackles.

Last Game Out for the Red Dragons•Cortlandiscomingoffabyeweekafterdominatingduringtheirfirsttwoweeksof the season, throwing up more than 50 points against their opponents. During week 2 of the 2018 season, the Red Dragons defeated Framingham State 57-19 in Cortland.

The team threw for 241 yards and rushed for 90 in the game. Junior quarterback Brett Segala threw for three touchdowns and an interception while Tommy Heuer stepped in to throw another touchdown on only three attempts. All four touchdown receptions came from different receivers, with Jake Smith leading the way with 68 yards on six receptions. Eight different Red Dragons caught a pass in the game.

Senior Zach Tripodi paced Cortland with 40 yards rushing on only six attempts (6.7 yards per carry). Six different ballcarriers had a rush in the game with Tripodi and Segala scoring a rushing touchdown each.

Mark DeLuise racked up 11 tackles in the game, including eight solo tackles to lead the Red Dragons. He also had one pass break-up. Tanner Olson was a terror on defense, collecting 2.0 tackles for a loss. D’Monte Woody, Brandon Lewis and Isaac Hicks III each had an interception in the game for Cortland. Woody and Lewis returned their picks for 59 and 20 yards, respectively.

Moving Forward•The Saxons are wrapping up a three-game homestand to open the 2018 season. Aftersplittingthefirsttwogames,theSaxonsaretakingontheRedDragonsinthe 2018 Empire 8 Conference opener on Homecoming weekend. Following the matchup, AU will travel to Morrisville State and Buffalo State before returning home to take on reigning Empire 8 Champion, The College at Brockport on October 13th.

Down the stretch, AU will travel to Utica and Hartwick before taking on Empire 8 rival, St. John Fisher College in Yunevich Stadium on November 3rd. Finally, the Saxons will close out the season with a nonconference game against the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

The Saxon Offense•After two games in 2018, the Saxon offense ranks third the Empire 8 in rushingyards(158.5)andfifthinscoring(28.5pointspergame)andyardspergame (367.5).

Sophomore Nas Smith currently sits in second place in the Empire 8 in rushing yards per game (90.0) and rushing touchdowns (3). Ben Burk completed the second longest pass in the Empire 8 during his touchdown passtofirst-yearRobert Smith Jr. against Ithaca. Smith Jr. currently ranks seventh in the Empire 8 with 88.0 receiving yards per game. He is tied for second in touchdown receptions (3) and sixth in recpetions per game (6.0).

The Saxon Defense•The AU defense ranks second in the Empire 8 in yards allowed per game (260.5).Duringthosetwogames,AUhasallowedonlyfivetouchdownson147yards rushing and 374 yards passing.

Senior linebacker Cole Reed leads the Empire 8 with 28 tackles (12 solo; 16 assisted) while junior Nick Milgate ranks third with 26 tackles (10 solo; 16 assisted). Sophomore Raymond Johnson is third in the Empire 8 in tackles for a loss (3.5) totaling in 14 yards lossed. Fellow sophomore Ryan Elliott is second in the Empire 8 in passes defensed (6) including one interception and fivepassbreak-ups.

Bob Rankl was appointed head coach of the Alfred University football team prior to the 2014 season after serving 15 years as an assistant for the Saxons. Rankl has led the Saxons to a 33-12 record in his four seasons as head coach, making him the fastest to reach the 25-win mark as head coach in AU history. Rankl,justthefifthheadcoachat AU since 1937, has a winning

percentage of .733, which ranks tops in school history among coaches who have served as head coach for at least 23 games. The 2016 Saxons went 10-0 in the regular season, claiming theEmpire8Conferencecrownandbecomingthefirstteam in Empire 8 history to go through a season unbeaten. The Saxons were the top seed in their region of the NCAA tournament, and hosted three games. AU defeated Bridgewater (MA) State and Western New England in the firsttworoundsbeforefallingtoMountUnioninanElite8shootout at Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons won a school-record 12 games and were named winners of the Lambert Cup as the top Division III team in theEast.Itmarkedthefirsttimesince1971thatanAlfredUniversity team earned the Lambert Cup.

During that 2016 season, Rankl led a group of Saxon coaches who were honored as Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. Rankl was also named ECAC North Coach of the Year, D3football.com East Region Coach of the Year, and AFCA Division III Region 1 Coach of the Year. During Rankl’s tenure, the Saxons have also enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom. AU has had at least one football player recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-District in each of the past four years (Michael Berardi in 2014 and 2015; A.J. LiCata, Shyheim Wingate and Zach Brinkley in 2016; A.J LiCata 2017). Rankl was appointed head coach of the AU football team in May 2014 after 15 seasons as an assistant coach for the Saxons. He served as the defensive line coach from 1999-2000, before transitioning to coaching the offensive line and coordinating the Saxons’ running game from 2001-2013. Rankl was instrumental in helping the Saxons reach the post-season 10 consecutive years (2004-2013), including six ECAC Bowl Championships, two Empire 8 Championships and appearances in the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, reaching the national quarterfinalsin2010.Duringthattime,AUset19differentschool records on offense.

Head Coach Bob Rankl120 Years of AU Football•2018 marks the 120th year of AU football which began in 1895 (missed three years from 1942-1945 due to WWII). Every AU football player can trace their roots to George Hill and the “Alfred Eleven” that went 0-3 in 1895, playing Wellsville twice and Bradford once. Since its inception to the start of the 2018 season, AU football has won 526-of-940 games (.584).

Winningest Class in AU History?•The AU football senior class has won 28 games during its tenure (8 in 2015; 12 in 2016; 8 in 2017). If they win six games in 2018, they will become the winningest class in AU football history with 34 wins in four years.

Bob, ‘66, & Pat Codispoti Scoreboard•Alfred University Athletics dedicated the brand new state-of-the-art video scoreboard to Bob and Pat Codispoti on September 8, 2018. Bob, the currently president of Saxon Nation, and Pat, former Head Women’s Soccer and Softball Coach, have been long-time friends and supporters of Alfred University Athletics.

The 2018 Alfred University Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony•The Alfred University Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held during Homecoming weekend on September 22, 2018. AU will be honoring four inductees:• Jen (Benson) Oades ‘01 (Softball)• Daniel Landrigan ‘95 (Lacrosse)• Don Miller ‘07 (Football)• David Vail ‘04 (Lacrosse)Miller was four-year letter-winner for the Saxons and is one of the most decorated football players the nearly 125-year-old program. He was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Team twice as a First Team member and Empire 8 All-Conference Team four times; once as an Honorable Mention, once as a Second Team honoree and twice as a First Team member. He also earned Associated Press All-America Third Team, D3Football.com All-East Region First Team and ECAC All-Northwest Region honors during his career. Over the course of his four years with the Saxons, Miller helped AU to a previously unprecedented 33-11 overall record and four ECAC Northeast Championships. He wrapped up his career with 222 tackles as a defensive tackle, including 24.5 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks. He also added 11 rushing touchdowns, stepping in on specialty goal line packages for the Saxons.
