only be a matter of seman-tics and a long time ago allof us knew where BobStoops stood.

Excuses? He didn’t makethem. Explanations? Theysounded too much likeexcuses.

For several seasons now,if the Sooner coach hadn’tshelved his old philosophy,he had at least changedtone. Seeing the media asan adversary, his new tactbecame to defend his team,to the point of appearing outof touch.

Once, he walked a fineline, not embarrassingcomrades, yet not assertingthings were up when theywere down.

Even this year, there’sstill been no explanation forOU dedicating itself tooffensive balance and usingthe fullback position to it.No deficiency was ever

admitted. The fix justhappened to happen.

So Stoops will do as hedoes and he has since,being certain to reiteratethat OU’s losses have cometo the Nos. 2 and 3 teams inthe nation the way KelvinSampson used to tell us hisrecord. Also, there has beenthe “judgment calls”monologue following theNotre Dame loss.

It’s not that he’s wrong,it’s just that he’s at oddswith the old Stoops, whomight have said somethingabout how you can’t be in aposition to let a tough call beso meaningful

Some say bad memoriesshould be buried. Othersbelieve forgetting past mis-takes only leads to future mis-takes

Oklahoma’s 45-38 loss toBaylor is a bad memory. TheSooners gave up 485 passingyards with the last 34 comingon Baylor’s go-ahead touch-down pass with 8 secondsremaining.

OU safety Javon Harrisdescribed which category hefell into earlier this week. Hewas asked when was the lasttime he watched the game.

“Today,” he said on Mon-

day. “I was watching it inclass. I shouldn’t have been,but I did. I’ve watched it a lotof times. I watched it on Sun-day in the ice tub.”

Back in August, thebrutal part ofOklahoma’s schedule

was believed to start today.The reason was the waytheSoonersstruggledagainst up-tempooffenseslast season.

Well,KansasState andNotreDameobviouslychangedthat thinking. The Soonersdid as well with the waythey handled Texas Tech’sup-tempo, spread offenseearlier this season.

Nonetheless, Baylor can

■ The health of OU runningback Damien Williams willplay a huge factor. If he’shealthy, OU has a big edge.Baylor can run the ball.Martin Glasco, JarredSalubi and LacheSeatstrunk are all averagingover 4.1 yards per carry.Without Williams, OU willlean on Brennan Clay. Heproved able to handle aheavy load last week.

■ Baylor quarterback NickFlorence isn’t going to wina Heisman, but the Bearscan throw the ball. Florencehas thrown 25 TD passes ineight games and TerranceWilliams is averaging 167.5receiving yards. Still, OU’spassing attack has heatedup since Jalen Saundersentered the lineup. OU getsthe edge because of itsdeeper pool of receivers.

■ The Sooners struggled tostop Notre Dame andKansas State from runningthe ball. Otherwise, they’vestuffed everyone they’vefaced. The Bears havestruggled. They’re one ofonly two Big 12 teamsallowing more than 200rushing yards per game.OU has the ability to makeBaylor one-dimensional.Baylor’s defense doesn’t.

■ OU’s lost three of its lastseven home games, datingback to last season.However, that won’t mattertoday. What will is the sourtaste the Sooners haveretained from last season’sloss at Baylor. This is agame OU has had its eyeon all season. Everythingsets up for an amends-making performance today.

■ This is where OU struggled at Baylor lastyear. But the Sooners aremuch better in the secondary this season. Bigpassing plays against theSooners have been in shortsupply. They’re the only Big12 team holding opponentsunder 200 passing yardsper game. Baylor continues to struggle here and it’sunlikely to change today.

That loss ended the Soon-ers’ national championshiphopes and firmly exposedthem as a team with defen-sive deficiencies. The sec-ondary had real problem giv-ing up big plays and theBears exposed it.

Some things have changedsince that loss. Baylor doesn’thave quarterback Robert Grif-fin III anymore. His perfor-mance against the Soonerselevated him to the HeismanTrophy. He grabbed it andheaded straight to the NFL.Kendall Wright, who hadeight catches for 208 yards inthat game is playing on Sun-days, too. Baylor now hasNick Florence at quarterback.Some of the names on theoffense have changed, but theBears still lead the nation intotal offense.

The Sooners’ secondary

remains nearly the same. Har-ris was OU’s free safety thatnight. His struggles coveringWright are part of the reasonhe’s now playing strong safe-ty. Tony Jefferson has movedfrom nickelback to free safe-ty. Aaron Colvin has movedfrom safety to cornerback.Only Hurst, a cornerback, isplaying the same position.

All those moves were insti-gated by OU defensive coor-dinator Mike Stoops. Heremembers watching thatgame as well. Although, itwas in a different environ-ment. Stoops had just beenfired as Arizona’s head coach.

“I was laying on my couch,”he said. “I was temporarilyunemployed at the time.”

He got his old job back atOU, in part, because of theissues exposed by the Bears.There isn’t a member of theSooners’ secondary that does-n’t see today’s game as anopportunity for redemption.

“We want to prove we’re abetter team than we were lastyear,” Colvin said.

The only way to do it isagainst a team like Baylor.The Bears still score a bunchof points by embarrassingdefenses. The Soonersthought it couldn’t happen to

them. Last season’s resultproved otherwise.

That’s why Harris haswatched every play of theBaylor game so many timeshe can call out the playsbefore they arrive on thescreen. He wasn’t shockedwhen the questions startedcoming up earlier this week.

“We all know what hap-pened,” he said. “For me, it’sabout going out there andproving people and their per-ceptions wrong.”

Spread the ballaround: Eight players hadat least four touches andeight receivers had at leasttwo receptions in last week’svictory over Iowa State. Itwas about as diversified ason offense as the Soonershave displayed all season.That should continue todayagainst the Bears. Theoffense has been unstop-pable when the ball isspread around the field.

Frank Shannon and AaronFranklin: Oklahoma’sfreshmen linebackers havebeen mainstays in theSooners’ dime package.Both will see extendedplaying time against Baylor.They’ll be out there becausethey’re a little smaller thanmiddle linebacker TomWort and weakside line-backer Corey Nelson.Shannon and Franklin’s

speed and quickness will beessential against a Bayloroffense that thrives on shortcrossing routes in themiddle of the field. If thesetwo tackle well, the Soonersshouldn’t have any problemslowing the Bears. If theydon’t, an offensive shootoutcould ensue.

Stay healthy: Left tackleLane Johnson will likely playfor the first time sincesuffering an ankle injuryagainst Notre Dame. GuardBronson Irwin has managedto stay in the lineup despite

an ankle injury that’shobbled him since theTexas game. The Soonersneed to have one gamewhere they don’t have topatch together an offensiveline for a period of the game.Even being shorthanded fora quarter could make a bigdifference.

Turnovers: It’s been feastor famine for OU in terms ofgetting interceptions andfumble recoveries. The lasttwo games have fallen in thefamine category. A latefourth-quarter interception

STILLWATER — It’sbecome a weekly ritual forMike Gundy to step to apodium in the Boone Pick-ens Stadium press box andpraise the play of his quar-terback. All that changes isthe name of the personwho’s taking the snaps atthe time.

Injuries have turned theposition into a revolvingdoor for the Cowboys (5-3,3-2 Big 12), and that won’tchange leading up to today’sgame against West Virginia(5-3, 2-3).

Gundy said Monday thathe expects starting quarter-back Wes Lunt to split prac-tice time with backup ClintChelf this week before theteam determines who will

play. Lunt had to come outof the Cowboys’ loss toKansas State over the week-end after getting hurt.

“I don’t think we knowwho our starter will be,”Gundy said at his weeklynews conference. “I’m fairlyconfident that we’ll haveWes and Clint out therepracticing and be in a situa-tion that whoever we thinkgives us the best chance tobe successful we’ll have inthe game.”

Lunt began the year asthe starter, then injured hisknee and was replaced byJ.W. Walsh in the thirdgame. The two flip-floppedagain after Walsh’s seasonwas ended by injury. Thatmeant third-stringer Chelfhad to come in after Luntwas hurt against K-State.

ment on his players’ injuries,but team doctors appearedto be checking Lunt for con-cussion symptoms on thesideline.

FORT WORTH, Texas —Gary Patterson figures hewas known more for playinghis guitar than anything hedid on the field as a KansasState player back in the early1980s.

During two years as a safe-ty and linebacker for the Wild-cats, Patterson played “a loton scout teams, a little bit ofspecial teams.” But it was alsoat K-State where he startedhis coaching career, as a grad-uate assistant in 1982 for theschool’s first-ever bowl team.

Now three decades later,with the third-ranked Wild-cats undefeated and in the

thick of the national champi-onship race, the Kansasnative and TCU coach faceshis alma mater for the firsttime Saturday.

“It’s hard, because you loveseeing, from their perspective,they’ve come so far and havean opportunity to be so closeto playing for a national cham-pionship,” said Patterson,TCU’s winningest coach with115 victories in his 12 seasons.“But also on our side of it, justtry to get seven (wins).

“It’s a dilemma,” he said.“But this is what they pay meto do.”

this a long time, dealingwith the same cast ofcharacters a long time andone gets tired of hearingothers chirp about thingsthey can’t possibly under-stand as well as oneunderstands.

He may be able to avoidlive calls on his coach’sshow, but he must still talkto his media tormentors. Itcan lead a guy to be short,combative and wrong(though give credit wereit’s due; Stoops explanationof his tolerance for oddhaircuts, tattoos andpiercings was like a breathof countercultural fresh air).

The only place whereStoops’ new fondness forexplanations is reallyrelevant is in the cornerhe’s painted himself into.

Stoops is right aboutmany things.

The losses wereunfortunate and came inwinnable games, yet whothey came against remainsmeaningful. Becausediscipline issues have fadedand because the Soonerscame-to-Jesus offensively

and created a bettermousetrap using TreyMillard as a weapon, andbecause everybody talks upthis team up as one that’sfun to be around and doesthings the right way, theseason can still end well.

The best way to judgethe season, really, is how itleaves the Sooner Nationfeeling, and if OU can keepon winning the SoonerNation should be left happyand (mostly) content.

The sticking point?No more losses.Landry Jones has quit

making the huge mistake.Josh Heupel’s game-planning has removed theblinders. New faces havebeen great additions.

After not being nearly asfun to root for the lastcouple of seasons, thisteam tugs at your heart. Ithas all the side stories thattend to run parallel with ahuge and successfulcampaign. Or, a good one.

This is still a good onejust as long as OU keepswinning.
