HUNTERS AND GAME PRICES

In his article “Vooruitskouing 2015” (Outlook 2015) in this edition, Dr FlippieCloete also gives an overview of the different phases that the game indus-try has experienced from the early 1990s until now.

At first, new farms were established and stocked with common breedinganimals, resulting in a rapid growth of game auctions and higher auctionprices. Hunters understood that there was not a direct correlation betweenauction and hunting prices due to, amongst others, capturing costs. Fur-thermore, it was clear that the difference in auction prices for the samespecies could be contributed to factors such as breeding suitability amongstyounger animals, and trophy quality in older male animals. It stands to rea-son that age, gender and rarity as well as the combination of animals in agroup, also have an effect on the prices fetched.

At the later phase of intensive breeding of animals such as buffalo, sableand roan, the dearth of animals with the right genes played a decisive rolein price-making.

The latest phase, in which there is intensive breeding of colour variantsof animals that in nature show colour deviations because of a recessivegene, also gives rise, due to scarcity, to the many price records shattered atauctions. It is obvious that the breeding of colour variants is mainly aimedat foreigners who have shown a demand for these animals. This is, ofcourse, also aided by a weak rand.

However, there is concern that some game farmers who have up to nowprovided popular destinations for local biltong hunters and have now alsojoined the ranks of those breeding colour variants, will adapt their prices ofsome of the popular hunting species.

This issue will receive further attention in the April edition of GAME &

HUNT.

WILD & JAG MAART 2015 7
