Gemsbok, a typical open-plains ante-lope, is one of the most difficult species to hunt once it adapts in the bush. The Aimpoint red-dot sights are perfect for these bushveld hunting conditions, not only for Africa’s dangerous game, but for plains game as well. Read more on page 32.

HUNTING AND CONSERVATION IGNORANCE

GAME & HUNT’S position is that any form of illegal or unethical hunting should be strongly condemned. However, a general call for a total ban on trophy hunting is outrageous and once again shows the glaring ignorance of the positive role hunt-ing plays in the conservation of our wildlife.

Let’s look at the facts … The conservation authorities in Kenia have much to say about their policy as a good example of conservation in Africa. They, however, keep quiet about the fact that since a hunting ban was introduced in 1972, Kenia has lost 80% of its lions and 70% of its other wildlife, including elephants.

In sharp contrast to this, a 1964 survey showed there were about 554 000 game animals on private farms in South Africa. Since then it has increased dramatically to some 25 million animals, which can be attributed directly to utilisation through hunting.

In this edition, Prof Peet van der Merwe of the North-West University writes about the financial impact of a trophy hunting ban on South Africa and the effect thereof on various industries, of which tourism is a very important aspect. In 2012, for instance, income generated from only the hunting price and day fees of trophy hunting earned more than R1 billion foreign exchange for the country.

Much of this income was ploughed back into conservation and job creation. The current situation demands that we search our own hearts to eradicate any

undesirable practices and to effectively propagate the positive effect of hunting on conservation.
