1. Introduction

This is an official Game|Changers ad-hoc education program digest containing information

about meetings and events we have organized and took part in and results we achieved

during the month.

Game|Changers is a free one-year program for ad-hoc education and research of IT

business designed for 20 students. It also includes open innovations, business

development and HR platform for organizations and event series with the total expected

audience of 250-300 people.

The program has a main corporate track and additional tracks on some particular topics:

banking, bio-informatics, entrepreneurship, and ecosystems. The digest will be divided by

tracks, but there will be additional separation as well.

2. Alumni information (2010-2011)

We track previous year students’ achievements and involve Game|Changers alumni in

further program activities.

On November, 15 Dmitry Orlov was hired on the position of Project Manager at i-Free (St.

Petersburg).

3. Corporate track meetings

2nd November, Yandex SPB Office, Internet Companies

Invited experts: Vladimir Gorovoy (Head of Yandex.Uslugi at Yandex), Evgeniya

Smolnikova (Academic Program Manager at Yandex).

Extra expert: Dmitry Kachmar (Vertical Services, Yandex).

During the meeting Evgeniya told us about her career from SKB Kontur to Yandex,

commenting on companies’ management and development processes and educational

activities. Vladimir presented information on the topic “How the web affects traditional

markets” giving examples from current Yandex.Uslugi services. Dmitry told us about

technical side of vertical services at Yandex.

The main part of the meeting included presentation by Sergey Dmitriev and Vladimir

Gorovoy on Russian and US Internet Companies – we discussed what they are, business

models evolution, organizational and management structure, differences, ratings of

biggest internet companies and which company can be considered anInternet Company.

9th November, IFMO QD, IT Industry in Russia and Industry Associations

Invited expert: Valentin Makarov (President of RUSSOFT)

During the meeting the President of RUSSOFT association told us about his background

and career, experience in association creation, we discussed IT Industry in Russia and its

main problems, the role of Business Associations in IT businesses and other topics related

to IT business and its’ support.

Also Marina Sukhorukova (Director at IFMO MTE) told us about QD incubator and MTE

(Master of Technology Entrepreneurship) program. MTE and Game|Changers students

were introduced to each other and discussed common interests.

16th November, AU RAS, IT in Business. Who is Entrepreneur

Invited expert: Alexey Baranov (CEO at Indeed-ID).

During the meeting we discussed Alexey’s career path to Indeed-ID and his experience in

other projects he is or was involved. Discussion concerning operating features of Indeed-

ID was held, also we discussed what is IT for society. Alexey told us about his experience

in different aspects of business, partners/clients/government relations and personal

development.

23rd November, IFMO QD, Org meeting. Homeworks and quests

During this organizational meeting we discussed current issues related to homework,

reports, quests, game mechanics and scoring.

25th November, IFMO QD, SPB.com - Small Global IT companies. Marketing in IT

Invited guest: Olga Steidl (Vice-President at SPB).

Olga told us about her background, education, activities including work at SPB company

and mentoring start-ups, time-management, marketing and business. We discussed a lot

of issues related to global IT companies on the example of SPB which grew from a small

local company to one of the strongest global IT companies on the market of mobile

applications.

We talked about global marketing, expansion to different foreign markets, mental

differences between different countries,ways of operating on foreign market and various

company organizational structures. Besides corporate topics Olga also shared her

experience on time-management, workplace organization and other topics.

29th November, i-Free Ventures, i-Free, Augment Reality and NFC

Invited guests: Kirill Petrov (i-Free, cofounder), Sergey Shulga (i-Free, cofounder), Kirill

Gorynya (i-Free, cofounder).

The cofounders of i-Free told us about company history and its development from a small

start-up to a big dynamic company, whichis nowadays operating globally. A lot of new

technologies developed by i-Free were presented to our participants; also we had an

excursion to NFC (Near-Field-Communication) demo room situated at i-Free office.

30th November, Ingria, Ecosystem Events, Startups

Invited guests:Ilya Antipov (Director of Operations, IngriaIncubator), Anton Fedosin

(DzenMoney), Oleg Rozhdestvensky (Ingria), Aleksander Petrov(BodyNova).

During our meeting at Ingria Incubator Ilya Antipov told us about his experience in

ecosystem events creation, incubatororganization and management, government

relations, business projects and education. Oleg Rozhdestvensky told us about Ingria and

Universities connections and internship opportunities.

Also we had presentation of two Ingria residents: Anton Fedosin with DzenMoney project

(personal finance) and Aleksander Petrov with BodyNova project (3D models for plastic

surgery). They shared their experience on start-up creation and work in the incubator.

4. Entrepreneurial and Ecosystems tracks meetings

A few meetings of E&E track were included in corporate track and thus have been described there.

10th November, IFMO QD, Social Entrepreneurship

Invited experts: Denis Stark (founder of Musora.Bolshe.Net), Julia Druzhkova (founder

of project Spasibo).

Participants of the meeting discussed topics related to Social Entrepreneurship: what it is,

what components it should include, legal aspects, social influence, transformation and

others.

Denis Starktold us about the project created in 2004: Musora.Bolshe.Net. Project included

3 operating business-models:

Ecomobil (paying to yard keepers for sorting garbage collected by them);

Mortgaging cost (it was based on the concept of broken windows theory: we do

notlitter if it is tidy around);

Corporate eco-party (organizing corporate meetings to collect garbage in public

places).

Julia Druzhkova told us about Charitable shop "Spasibo": the idea of its creation,

experience abroad, expectations and problems (legal issues, item sorting, construction of

a business model and others). Spasibo is a charitable shop where people can bring their

things which will be sorted and sent to charity organizations or sold in this shop for the

price of RUR 50.

14th November, Ingria, Universities: Trends, Economics, Politics, Research

Invited expert: Igor Fedyukin(Research Fellow and Director for Policy Studies, New

Economic School; Advisor to the Minister of Economic Development of the Russian

Federation).

During the meeting we discussed with Igor different aspects related to Universities and

educational process in Russia and abroad. Also during the second part of the meeting we

outlined the most important persons and universities in St. Petersburg connected with IT

education.

5. Bioinformatics track meetings

4th November, JetBrains, Bioinformatics Origins and Biotech Companies

Lecture summary: Presentation by Maxim Shvecov: “What is Bioinformatics”; discussion

on “What else can be studied using bioinformatics, future of bioinformatics” and Overview

of Johnson&Johnson company by Olga Yanyuk.

Homework given: write and present 2 paragraphs about bioinformatics company you like

(from a list in google docs); Study places to take Master degrees in bioinformatics.

Quest given: Contact any company from the list and try to persuade them to make a

lecture for us (online). Duration: whole semester. Evaluation: Quest is considered as

completed when a lecture is held.

12th November, AU RAS, Proteomics-based bioinformatics, 23&me

Invited expert: Yuri Porozov PhD in Medicine, MSc in computer science.

Lecture summary:During the lecture we discussed the worldwide opportunities of taking

degree in bioinformatics. Yuri told us about his work experiences in bioinformatics in Italy

and Russia. He compared the development of bioinformatics in Russia, Italy, India and

Europe. An overview of 23&me project was made and presented by Alexandra

Vachnadze.

Homework given: prepare an overview of the selected company; top 5 places to study

bioinformatics (MSc by Olga, Bachelor by Maxim, MB by Alexandra).

Quest given:Make a report about differences among sequencing

technologies:Microarrays; Exome sequencing; Full genome sequencing. Duration: app. 1

month. Evaluation: Award is given by the audience after presentation of a report.

18th November, AU RAS, Biotech Education &PacBio

Summary of lecture: Literature and articles in science by Sergey Dmitriev; Introduction in

bio-fuels by NikolayVyahhi; Overview of Pacific Biosciences by Maxim Shvecov;

Organizational questions (Next semester projects, Moscow &Skolkovo, Cases in

bioinformatics by Alexandra Vachnadze, Upcoming events).

Homework given:Read .pdf files in Dropbox about bio-fuels and agriculture; Development

of the medical and bioinformatics industry in Europe, China and USA.

6. Banking track meetings

3rd November, Philip Delgyado's apartment. What is money?

Philip is a former employee of Yandex.Dengi. Now he works as a Chief Technology

Officer ata start-up. Besides that he is an active member of Planning Future Society. The

second expert was Gregory Fishman - founder of "Cognitive Financial Technologies" and

a partner in "Automated Intelligence Systems" company (trading algorithms for stock

exchange). Our guests were Maria Vinogradova (Head of Marketing Department) and

VeronikaVetrova (HR Director) from OpenWaycompany.

We talked about the origins and history of money, credit cards, e-money, etc. We tried to

invent our own definition of money and found out a lot of its’ unique features. Some

important banking terms were discussed: emission, inflation, futures contracts, hedging

and so on. The second part of the meeting was about the future of money. Our goal was to

comprehend the main tendencies of the world progress in terms of money and value

changing. So we suggested several means of transactions which perhaps will be able to

replace money.

8th November. OpenWay. Payment Processing Ecosystem

Our main speaker was Maria Vinogradova. Maria takes part in business development in

the company and suggestion of new products that will be the most useful for their clients.

Other experts: Veronika Vetrova, Anton Voskobovich (Software Engineer) and

Alexander Vakhabov (Designer).

We began with clarifying various banking terms. Than we talked about different payment

systems, and how they work with banking cards. We also figured out the path of clients’

money from the POS to the issuing bank. Than we talked about four main players on

payments market: telecom companies, e-money, e-payments and banks. After the

meeting students received home task to analyze in groups these four players and to make

a short presentation.

22nd November. OpenWay.

This meeting was a continuation of the previous lecture. Our speaker was Maria

Vinogradova. At the beginning of the meeting students showed their home

taskpresentations about E-Money, E-commerce and Telecom companies. During the

lecture we talked about different systems which were created for the needs of banks, for

payment process automation and about problems of these systems. Then we were told

about web and mobile banking in developed countries. At the end we discussed and

compared the future banking and payment processing trends in Russia and abroad.

We had 7 recommended and co-located events in November.

November 14th:Seminar about Skolkovo grants at Ingria, organized by Ingria Incubator.

November 17th:Oracle’s ThinkQuest Presentation at IFMO, organized by IFMO.

November 19th-20th: STS Workshop at EU SPb, organized by EU SPbandSkolkovo

Foundation.

November 19th-20th: Hackday #20, organized by Kechinov studio.

November 19th-20th: OpenWay Autumn School, organized by OpenWay.

8. Additional information

During the second month we had 1 social event in the Café V-meste on 12th November.

We had a great chance to chat in informal atmosphere, eat home-made food, drink coffee

and play board games.

Apart from Game|Changers participants there were a few alumni and an expert guest as

well.
