Weve seen thisBoise State oot-ball team win ona big stage near the nations

    capital.They beat Virginia Tech33-30 on Sept. 6.

Weve seen them topplea Mountain West teamthat beat Fresno State inthe New Mexico Bowl lastseason.

The Broncos handledWyoming 51-6 on Sept. 18.

Then we all watchedBoise State beat then-No.24 Oregon State 37-24 on

national television withESPNs GameDay in Boiselast Saturday.

Weve all seen thisBronco team win big gamesin ront o big audiences, but we havent seen themplay the type o game they

will ace today. One week ater being

the center o attention inthe college ootball world,

the Broncos could be testedtonight, not so much by an0-3 New Mexico State team, but by another opponent motivation.

For months, they havetried to fnd the rightmixture o emotion andaggressiveness on the feld.Senior nickel Winston Ven-able will sit out the frst halo tonights game becauseo a hit the WAC deemed

dangerous in last weeksgame. Venable was possi-bly playing with too muchenergy and aggressiveness

in a big game.Tonight, however, theBroncos might have touncork their energy.

The motivation nowturns rom winning biggames to not losing, or evenplaying close games.

ESPN GameDay wont bethere, ABC wont be broad-casting rom Las Cruces andSports Illustrated probablywont be covering this game

or next weeks edition. And, o course, New

Mexico State is not a rankedopponent.

I think its defnitely adierent eel, Boise Statereceiver Austin Pettis said. Its going to be a goodchallenge or us, going romthe crowd bringing a lot oenergy and the hype aroundto town to going to a small-er place with not as manyans, so well have to bring(the energy) ourselves.

Part o you is glad to seethem go, because they just areso tough to beat every year, butat the same time, you want to

play the best, and they def-nitely are one o the best thereis, New Mexico State runningback Seth Smith said in July atthe WAC media preview.

Boise State is 68-4 againstWAC teams since joining theconerence in 2001, losing onlythree times to current schoolsLouisiana Tech (2001), FresnoState (2005) and Hawaii (2007).

Long seen as a hindranceto Boise States aspirations ornational respect, the coner-ence has seen a bit o a spike inattention this season, with UtahState playing tough at Okla-homa in the season opener,Fresno State topping two-time

deending Big East championCincinnati in their opener, andNevada ranked or the frst timein 62 years.

Weve talked a long timeabout how we get tested everyyear by teams in our coner-ence, Boise State coach ChrisPetersen said. Its good somepeople are taking notice, Iguess, but its something wevebeen aware o or a long time.

Part o the reason behindleaving or the Mountain Westwas better competition anda better travel schedule. LasCruces, Ruston, La., Logan,Utah and Honolulu are not theeasiest places to send a ootballteam. Six o the 26 teams withthe lowest home attendancelast season were in the WAC.

BRONCOBITESn Boise State suered a tough

loss Tuesday, when it confrmedjunior running back D.J. Harperwill miss the rest o the seasonwith a torn ACL. He sueredthe same injury last season atFresno State. Beore being hurtin Saturdays win over then-No.24 Oregon State, Harper had160 yards on 18 carries. SeniorJeremy Avery will likely be theteams No. 2 back behind juniorDoug Martin.n In the last three meetingsbetween Boise State and NewMexico State, the Broncos haveoutscored the Aggies 149-7.The Broncos are 10-0 all-timeagainst NMSU, including theirfrst win over a Division I-Ateam as a I-A member, in 1996.

n Senior receivers Titus Youngand Austin Pettis are eighth andninth, respectively, in schoolhistory in receiving yards.Young has 2,158 yards, andPettis has 2,110.n Nickel Winston Venable willbe suspended or the frst halo todays game because o ahelmet-to-helmet hit againstOregon State last Saturday. The punishment was originally aone-game suspension rom theWAC, but Boise State appealed, reducing it to a hal. Venable, who has 11 tackles this season, will be replaced by Hunter Whitein the starting lineup.

FIVEKEYSFor Boise State1. Business attire. The Broncosare the clear avorite today, andor good reason. Look at thestats, you name it an NMSUwin would be monumental. Lookor Boise State to treat it like abusiness trip, take care o work, and get back home happy.

    2. Rush Christian. The Aggieshave yielded just one sack thisseason, and i the Broncos canget in inexperienced QB RyanChristians head, it will be a feldday or the deense.

    3. Second-team time. I theBroncos can get up big early,

it will allow some o the teamsyounger players to get somegood experience and keep thestarters well-rested.

    4. Peanut butter. Avery (akaPeanut) will see more snapswith Harper out. Getting himcomortable as soon as pos-sible will be key to continue thestrong backfeld rotation.

    5. No letdown. Todays gamecouldnt be more dierent thanlast weeks. The Broncos willneed to create their own energyin a likely quiet Las Cruces.

    Touchdown Tommy

    By Dave Southorn

    [email protected]

LAS CRUCES, N.M. Latein the third quarter Sept. 18at Wyoming, Tommy Gallardadid something rare, by his stan-dards.

    On a second-and-7 rom the

Cowboys 17, he caught a 15- yard pass rom Kellen Moore, brought down at the 2. On thenext play, D.J. Harper scoredthe touchdown.

For Gallarda, who has eightcareer touchdowns on 23 ca-reer receptions, it was morereminiscent o his ellow tightend Kyle Eaw, who has onetouchdown and 52 receptionsin his career.

He was coming o the feldand I told him you just pulledan Eaw, Eaw said.

Used to being a threat tohaul in a pass in the end zone,Gallarda got a taste o what histeammates trials have beenlike.

I know how he eels now,Gallarda said, laughing.

At 6-oot-5 and 260 pounds,Gallarda is an ideal target inshort yardage situations, and theBroncos have used him accord-ingly. The longest touchdowno his career was a 21-yarderagainst Nevada last season. Sixo his eight scores have comeon passes o less than 10 yards.

Hes got that big body youneed to make those catches intrafc down there, and hes aveteran guy, so hell make thetough catches, coach Chris Pe-tersen said.

In last Saturdays game, Gal-larda caught a 6-yard touchdownpass rom Austin Pettis on a trickplay.

Hes just a really reliable guy,on and o the feld, Pettis said. You can always trust him.

Gallarda is also known as theteams best blocking tight end,but when he gets called on tomake a big play, hes more thanhappy to help.

To be another part to helpthis oense, thats a pretty bigdeal to me, because we have somany talented guys, that i Kel-len can count on me, thats pret-ty cool, Gallarda said.

Boise State tight end Tommy Gallarda, right, celebrates with ullback Dan Paul ater scoring the frsttouchdown in the Broncos 33-30 win over Virginia Tech on Sept. 6 in Landover, Md.

TE Gallarda hasscored eight TDson 23 catches

Last weekends homegame broke a Bronco Sta-dium record with 34,137ans in attendance.

The capacity o AggieMemorial Stadium is

30,343, but its unlikely toreach that number.

The Broncos have notlost in 10 games againstNew Mexico State.

Its easy or BoiseState to get up or thebig games with everyonewatching. But how willthe Broncos play whenthe lights go dim andcrickets begin to breakthe silence?

How will they playwhen they are avoredto win by more than six yes, you read right, six touchdowns?

    Thats with the extra

points. Boise state is a43-point avorite. Andas they kickstart theirarewell tour through theWestern Athletic Coner-ence tonight, they willace let down on occa-sion. That may not equateto losses, but playing theNew Mexico States othe world doesnt exactlycreate excitement on itsown.

Overall, what WACteams are you really excit-ed to see Boise State playthis season? Nevada hasbig wins and is ranked orthe frst time since 1948.

Idaho is a rivalry gameand always creates itsown excitement.

Fresno State beatCincinnati, but the two-time deending Big Eastchamps havent exactlylooked like world beatersthis season.

Boise State is the No. 3team in the country andplastered on the covero Sports Illustrateds na-tional edition this week.

Tonight, that sameteam will kicko at 6 p.m.against a team that hasntplayed in a bowl gamesince 1960 and has been

outscored 124-47 alreadythis season. The show came to

Boise State last Saturday.Today, however, the

Broncos will have toprovide their own excite-ment.

    Fox

    Continued from the front

It is certainly a dierentatmosphere sometimes, butthose 11 guys on the feld arereally what matter, theyre themost challenging part i theres15,000 or 85,000 people, deensive end Ryan Winterswyksaid. There can be some longtravel days, but you have to seethe good side o it Im luckyto play ootball and see theseplaces. How else would I evervisit Louisiana or New Mexico?

    When asked about his teams

continued success, Petersen hasoten praised his players or tak-ing it one game at a time, andwhen asked about the BCS, hesays it is out o our control.

Put those two things to-gether, and it is part o why theBroncos have won the WAC titleseven o the past eight seasons. One o the ew things they cancontrol is their standing in theconerence at the end o each

    year.The most important games

to us every year are our WACgames, and that starts (to-night), tight end Kyle Eawsaid.

Sure enough, on a largeplaque in the teams flm room, the frst goal mentioned is towin a WAC title, ollowed by awin in a bowl game.

It wont change next year, either its always got to startwith taking care o home base, which is the league you play

in, Petersen said.As Boise State has rocketedto national prominence sincejoining the conerence, otherprograms like New MexicoState has struggled to rise romthe bottom o the Division Iranks. The Aggies have notplayed in a bowl in 50 years, while Utah State has not playedin one since 1997. Even whilesome programs have had di-

fcult times lately, it provides allthe more incentive or them tobeat the Broncos, and in turn, has helped Boise State bring itsbest week in and week out.

I like that WAC teams willdo anything to beat us, and thatreally has prepared us or someo the big games weve played,Winterswyk said.

The Broncos ollow uptonights game next week witha home nonconerence contestagainst Toledo beore fnishingwith seven straight WAC games

to close out the season. Witha 3-0 start and two wins overranked teams, the Broncos havetaken care o business, andnow, their main task is at hand.

Weve met our goals soar, receiver Austin Pettis said. Were going to have to try andcontinue that going into theWAC because thats our mainocus every year. We have to setthe standard right away.

BSU:WAC games remain most important to Broncos

    Charlie Litchield/IPT

Boise States Dan Paul, 47, along with teammates Ryan Winterswyk, let, and Byron Hout willattempt to continue to play with high energy at New Mexico State today.

With 114 yards in last seasons finale at Boise State, Smith becamethe first New Mexico State running back since 2000 to eclipse the1,000-yard plateau, finishing with 1,016 yards.I think hes a very good player, Boise State coach Chris Petersensaid. There are certain people and certain plays that stick out fromthe year before, and you tend to forget a lot of it, but hes one we

certainly remember.Smith had five 100-yard games last season and had 246 carries,

but scored just one touchdown. Thus far in 2010, with opposingdefenses well aware of his talents, hes been held to 100 yards

on 31 attempts. He has, however, scored two touchdowns. He runs hard, Boise State safety Jeron Johnson said. Hedid a good job (last season) ... youve got to

take him down on first contact. Dave Southorn/IPT

    Everyone who follows Boise State

football knows Titus Youngcan turn any play into big yardage. Now, the rest of thenation is well aware. The senior receiver is No. 1 nat-ionally in all-purpose yardage, racking up 624 yardsthus far (208 per game). He has 310 receiving yards(two touchdowns), 249 kickoff return yards, 43 punt

return yards and 22 rushing yards.I didnt know that, but if were there, we probablyare doing a pretty good job, coach Chris Petersensaid Monday. On the 33 times Young hastouched the ball this season, hes aver-aged nearly 19 yards per play. His 136receiving yards on five receptionsagainst Oregon State last Saturdaywere the second-most of his car-eer. With 103.3 yards receiving pergame, he currently stands 10th inthe country in that statistic. Youngdid fumble a punt against the Beavers, and Petersen was not certain Youngwould keep the duties heading intotodays game. Still, Youngs abilitiesto contribute through the air, onthe ground or on special teamshas made him a versatile wea-pon in the Broncos offense asmuch as ever. Hes becominga good all-around player, seniorreceiver Austin Pettis said. ... Itsgreat seeing guys doing all theycan out there to help us win.
