If the Boise State coaches had their wish, Crawford would bethe big guy on the sidelines this year. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound defensive end transferred from

Bakersfield (Calif.) College this summer, and had aredshirt year available. He was likely bound for one,

until Darren Koontz was lost for the year with abroken foot.

We wouldve loved to redshirt him but wealso knew by the end of this season, he wasgoing to be a force, coach Chris Petersen said.

Pressed into duty, Crawford has been aforce when the second unit is on thefield he leads the team with sixtackles for loss, has 2.5 sacks andhas recovered a fumble. The plays are coming a lot easierto me, just happy Im understanding

things now, Crawford said. AgainstVirginia Tech, honestly, my knowl-edge of the plays wasnt there.Throughout most of fall camp, theCanadian import did not know if hewould play or not, but wanted tomake an impact, if at all possible, which he certainly has.I wasnt going to be mad,Crawford said. ... I definitely wanted

to get some time this year. I knewthis would be a big year for Boise

State and wanted to be a part of it.Dave Southorn/IPT

    TECH COACH

    SONNY DYKES

    Years: 1st season

Career record: 3-4Record at La. Tech: 3-4Noteworthy: Dykes wasthe offensive coordinatorat Arizona from 2007-09.His father, Spike, won82 games at Texas Techfrom 1987-99.On Boise State: Ithink what reallystands out about themis that they are a teamthat plays best collec-tivelly on both sides ofthe ball. The chemistryand the coaching iswhat sets them apart.

PLAYER TO WATCHLOUISIANA TECH DE: MATT BROHA

A starter since he came off his redshirt in 2008, Broha entered this season with 5.5 sacks in 25career games.Seven games into 2010, Broha has six sacks the third-most among WAC players this season.I dont want to say were surprised, but I think Matt has exceeded our expectations, Bulldogs

coach Sonny Dykes said. Hes just a consistent, hard worker, and thatspaying off.

Broha has nine tackles for loss, fifth in the conference and topsamong Louisiana Tech defenders.I hit the weight room pretty hard this offseason, and I think that,

coupled with our new defensive style, I get to be on theattack a lot, Broha said.

The Bulldogs have racked up eight sacks in

their last three games, and will facetheir toughest test of the year in theBroncos, who have yielded just one

sack. They have a great line, and

thats great theyve only givenup one, but were experienced

and have done pretty welllately, Broha said.

    Thatll be a greatbattle.

BRONCOBITESn Tonights game is the frst timethe Broncos will have played aregular season game on a Tuesday.Since the start o the 2008 season, the Broncos will have played onall seven days o the week atertonight.n The Broncos dominance onboth sides o the ball had themin the top fve nationally in many

categories entering this pastweekends game total oense, scoring oense, rushing deense, total deense, scoring deense, passing efciency, tackles or lossand sacks allowed.n Quarterback Kellen Moore canbreak the school record or careertouchdown passes with threetonight. Ryan Dinwiddies 82 arethe current benchmark. Moore alsoneeds one 200-yard game to tieBart Hendricks record o 28.n Senior receiver Austin Pettis, who already holds the schoolrecord with 33 touchdown catches, can tie the school mark or mostreceptions i he hauls in six passestonight. Don Hutts 189 is thecurrent record. Fellow senior TitusYoung needs three receptions

to pass Jeremy Childs or thirdall-time.

    FIVEKEYS

    For Boise State

1.Air it out. The Bulldogs have atalented deensive line, anchored byMatt Broha and Mason Hitt, but thepass deense is a liability. La. Tech isgiving up 296.7 ypg through the air.Kellen Moores numbers grow evenlarger tonight.

    2. Three and out. Louisiana Techwill try and wear down the Broncoswith a no-huddle attack. I the Bron-cos can keep gains to a minimumand knock down passes, theyll givetheir own high-octane oense plentyo good scoring opportunities.

    3. Diversify. In their three wins, theBulldogs have made oes becomeone-dimensional. Mix in the deeprunning back group with the aerialattack, and itll be 21 straight winsor Boise State.

4.Sense of urgency. The Broncoshave been outstanding in the frsthal this season, and i they can doit again today, theyll quickly havethe Bulldogs in a hole they wont getout rom.

    5. Wrap up. Coach Chris Petersensaid Louisiana Techs oense turnsyou into bad tacklers. I theBroncos can prevent second eorts, theyll keep the Bulldogs quick-passing system at bay all night.

BOISE Kellen Moore is 53rdnationally in completions pergame, Jeron Johnsons 33 tackleslead the team, and Austin Pettishasnt scored a touchdown in threestraight games.

Yet in those three games, theBroncos have won by a combined164-14.

During the dominant span, Boi-se State has rested its starters lib-erally, oten putting in the secondteam in the third quarter to playout the rest o the game.

Im not going to reach the

goals I wanted to, said Johnson, who had hoped or 100 tackles thisseason. But Im healthy. Ive beenable to rest up were all or it,were playing good ootball. I thatcomes at the cost o my goals, Imfne with it.

For players like Johnson, itmeans not meeting some personalgoals, but its hard to complainwhen the team is ranked No. 2 inthe nation and gathering seriousmomentum.

The Broncos have been able toget younger players snaps that theydid not see in closer contests.

In the long run, its really go-ing to help, senior nickel WinstonVenable said. For one, a lot o us

are well-rested, and second, weregetting a lot o guys some goodexperience that will pay o in theuture.

I youre a true team player, youve got no problem taking sometime o.

Venable said some guys wantto be out there more, but i thereare any players struggling to bal-ance their competitive desires andsitting on the sidelines or the goodo the team, none o them appearto be among the Broncos leaders.

Pettis 4.17 receptions per gameranks him 95th in the nation, put-ting him on pace or about 50 regu-lar-season catches he had 62 in

the frst 10 games o last season. He has our touchdowns, which hehad in one game last season.

You want to be in there, butthere are still positives to it youkind o get to save your body a little

bit, and those young guys get a loto experience, because you neverknow when youll need them, Pet-tis said.

No one is sae rom getting thehook, even the Broncos biggestname.

Moore has not played in theourth quarter since Sept. 25, didnot play at all in the second halOct. 16 at San Jose State and saw just one second-hal series in eacho the two games in between.

For a quarterback who is a like-ly Heisman Trophy fnalist, Mooreis on pace or 3,134 yards and 32touchdowns at the current rate.O course, coach Chris Petersen is

hardly concerned about the bronzestatue o a man in a leather hel-met.

I think hes promoted himsel,Petersen said.

When some o the Broncos o-

ensive stars are only playing about60 percent o the game, the eye-popping numbers certainly do notollow, yet the Broncos still are intop fve nationally in scoring o-ense and scoring deense.

There are guys who probablyarent getting the number o playsthey would have expected, but thatcomes with those type o games,Moore said. Doug Martin couldcarry it 30 times i he had to, buthes only getting about 10. Theresa lot o guys like that.

The most important numbersor the Broncos are, o course, sixand zero. Wins and losses. Those wins may be by slightly smaller

margins in the second hal o theseason, with Boise State acing the WACs upper echelon, includingHawaii and Nevada, just outsidethe Associated Press top 25 thisweek.

Weve got some big gamescoming up getting rested upwas nice, but I think those days aregone, Venable said.

Petersen said the best part o theblowouts has been getting as manyplayers on the feld as possible, andhe echoed Venables words.

Thats a good thing i that hap-pens, Petersen said. Were notcounting on that happening anymore ... I think about the guys thatbust their tails every day, week inand week out, that hardly get anytime. When were able to do that, its a good thing.

Broncos see silver lining in blowouts

    Greg Kreller/IPT

Boise State running back Doug Martin averages 12.3 rushes per game, but could easily carry the ball more, according to quarterbackKellen Moore. Doug Martin could carry it 30 times if he had to, but hes only getting about 10, Moore said. Theres a lot of guys like that.

Boise State startershave received plentyof rest in recent routs
