From a walk-on to one of the nations most prolific tacklers, CoreyParedes ascent has been pretty remarkable. In 2008 as a redshirt freshman, he had three tackles, but earned
a scholarhip before last season, when he had 54 tacklesand four sacks. This season, through nine games, he
has 107 tackles, which is fourth-best in the nation.I think he kind of epitomizes what Hawaiis allabout, just aggressive, he flies around, BoiseState coach Chris Petersen said. Hes a very pas-
sionate player and a guy youd love to have
on your team. Thats probably the bestcompliment you can give him.
The junior linebacker is a team cap-tain, and also has picked off threepasses this season.I cant say enough great things
about him, Hawaii coach GregMcMackin said.

do for success deflect-ing credit to others. The coaches are get-

said. Dave

With Louisiana Techs safeties creeping up on Boise States pairof senior standout receivers, the middle of the field was open
for Tyler Shoemaker. Naturally, Kellen Moore saw that, andconnected with the junior six times for 124 yards, both
career bests.I think its a big role, and I am glad theres trust in me
to contribute, Shoemaker said.
On a team known for keeping defenses off balance, having a third receiver to make plays in traffic goesa long way toward putting up copious amounts of
points.Theres not many teams that have three
receivers like we do that can make plays ona nightly basis, senior Austin Pettis said. After struggling a bit in spring practiceswhile coming back from a hernia injuryhe suffered late last season, Shoemakerstepped up big-time in fall camp, and
it has translated into 17 catches for 290yards and three TDs thus far.The No. 1 thing is just catching the ball hes just catching it cleaner, coach ChrisPetersen said. On top of that, hes makingtougher catches.A standout at Mountain View High,Shoemaker had interest from Ivy Leagueschools, but opted to stay home andwalk on at Boise State. Now on schol-
arship, and bound to be Moores topreturning receiver in 2011, consider the
decision a sound one. When you have choices, and you realizeyou made the right one, its an incrediblefeeling, Shoemaker said.

BRONCOBITESn Two big school records are likelyto all today Kellen Moore needsone touchdown pass to set theschool mark with 83, and AustinPettis needs two receptions tosurpass Don Hutt's record o 189career catches.n Moore's passer rating o 188.3is tops in the nation, and on pace toset the NCAA mark, set by Hawaii's
Colt Brennan in 2007 (186.0).n Hawaii is 74th in red-zone o-ense, converting 80 percent o itsattempts. Boise State is second inred-zone deense (53).n The Boise State deense hasorced opposing oenses into 35three-and-outs, which is the fthmost in the country.n Senior tight end TommyGallarda will miss the rest o theregular season with a broken oot.It is the third straight year a seniortight end has suered a broken oot.Gallarda has 25 career receptionsand nine TDs.n Hawaii walk-on senior LB KaponoRawlins-Crivello was a membero the BSU ootball team in 2006(redshirt) and 2007 (two tackles). He has not recorded any stats this
season.
FIVEKEYS
For Boise State
1.Wrap up. Facing a Hawaii team withtalented receivers that oten catch shortpasses, the Broncos will have to quicklytake them down or risk long gainsshould they miss a tackle or two.
2.Put on some pressure. It soundssimple, and it is: Against a team thatloves to throw, nothing disrupts bet-ter than a good pass rush. With studDEs, the Broncos will lean on them toget in Bryant Monizs ace early andoten.
3.Protect, protect. The Broncoswill put a big emphasis on holding
onto the ball this week. Hawaii is No.2 in the nation in takeaways, havingorced 26 turnovers. Another way tohelp that will be to continue to protectKellen Moore, who has been sackedjust twice.
4.On Martin, on Avery ... In Ha-waiis frst three games, it lost twice, giving up 748 yards on the ground. In all three, USC, Army and Coloradohad multiple rushing threats. Look orDoug Martin, Jeremy Avery, and evenMatt Kaiserman to give the Warriorsdierent looks in the backfeld.
5.Take advantage. Hawaii will takesome chances to create turnovers. The Broncos would be wise to usethat aggression against them withscreens, draws or a trick p lay.
Continued fromthe front
I look at this game as the WACchampionship game, Hawaii line-backer Corey Paredes said. ... Itsgoing to be a showdown.
For Boise State, it is the frst bigtest since Sept. 25s game againstOregon State, and a battle against ateam scoring 45.5 points per gameduring its six-game winning streak. The Warriors also represent thespectre o an empty spot in theBroncos trophy case, the only teamto win the WAC title other than Boi-se State since 2002.
Its the last team we lost to in the WAC enough said, Boise Statesenior saety Jeron Johnson said.
Motivation is hardly lacking orHawaii, especially considering lastseasons meeting between the twoteams, a 54-9 throttling by the Bron-cos in Honolulu.
Its pushing us a lot, the loss wehad to them at home last year hasgiven us a lot o motivation, Pare-des said.
Most o the battles between thetwo teams have been tight, howev-er, including a 27-7 Boise State winat Bronco Stadium two years ago, aided by fve Hawaii interceptions. In 2007, it was a 39-27 Hawaii win
on Oahu and in 2006 in Boise, the
Broncos pulled out a 41-34 win.Boise State coach Chris Petersen,
never one to overstate things, saidcomparisons could be drawn to the Warriors 2007 Sugar Bowl squad, and even ventured to say a Warriorswin tonight would all but assure theconerence crown.
I look at their schedule and I saythis is it or them, Petersen said.
O course, any team aspiring towin the WAC must go through theBroncos, and or the Warriors, thatmeans going through Boise State onits home tur, where a conerenceloss has not occurred since 1998.
We all know the stakes, its a biggame or us, or our program itsa big opportunity, Hawaii quarter-
back Bryant Moniz said.Petersen called Hawaii one o
the nations hottest teams, and the Warriors eel they are meeting theBroncos at the right time.
Were peaking as a ootballteam, Hawaii coach Greg McMack-in said. Id rather play them nowthan at the frst o the season.
Tonights game eatures strengthsversus strengths, as two o the topseven oenses in the nation ace o.Hawaii has the nations top passinggame (395.4 ypg), while Boise Stateis eighth against the pass (161 ypg).Somethings gotta give, right?
The deenses senior leader,Johnson, said Tuesday the deensive
backs are putting the game on their
shoulders, hoping to duplicate thesix turnovers the Broncos orcedlast season against the Warriors.
We know we have two inter-ceptions on the season, Johnsonsaid. We know we have to step upand make some plays.
Players and coaches on bothteams know the stakes, and withthe Broncos departing next seasonor the Mountain West, they want toleave the WAC where theyve beenso many times on top. Tonightsgame marks what will be the fnalmatchup or the oreseeable uture, and ending the series with a winwould be savored or awhile.
Its nice to get a lot better com-
petition coming here, I know a loto guys are excited to play Hawaiisince theyve been so successul this year, Boise State receiver AustinPettis said. Its a nice little rivalry.
For Hawaii, a win tonight meansrather smooth sailing to a WAC title. For Boise State, it will continue arun to the BCS, and its the kind ogame that will help prepare it or agauntlet o tough November games(at Idaho, vs. Fresno State, at Ne-vada).
In college ootball, as we see week in and week out, its allabout the emotion, Petersen said. Those are all going to be emotionalgames.
BSU
Greg Kreller/IPT
Boise State defensive tackle Chase Baker (97) tr ies to bring down Louisiana Tech quarterback Ross Jenkins in the Broncos 49-20 victor yon Oct. 26 at Bronco Stadium.
Continued fromthe front
Next week, the Broncosplay a rivalry game at Idaho, ollowed by a home gameagainst Fresno State and aroad game at Nevada.
Boise State wraps up itsfnal WAC season in Logan onDec. 4 against Utah State.
Starting at 1:30 p.m.today, these are the types ogames that matter, the gamesthat ans can get excited towatch.
Each and every game thismonth should be entertain-ing, and quite possiblycompetitive. Thats betterthan beating New MexicoState, Toledo, San Jose Stateand Louisiana Tech by acombined 213-34.
Watching ESPN roll outBCS standings each Sunday
has been much more enter-taining than those games.
So, enjoy today. Enjoy thenext month o competitivecollege ootball while it lasts.
Next year, it might not bethe same.
Boise State is uprootingand moving to the MountainWest Conerence. And lastI heard, there is no string ogames like this on next yearsschedule. There is no gameagainst Hawaii and no rivalryagainst Idaho on schedule.Fresno State and Nevadagames could lose lusterwithout a conerence title atstake in 2011. Both schoolswill join the Broncos in theMountain West in 2012.
Utah will be in the Pac-10next year, BYU will be out onits own and theres talk TCUcould jump to the Big East.
So, i Boise State endsthis season in another BCSgame or gasp the BCSchampionship, well knowthe Broncos had some helpin the strength o scheduledepartment.
And it will be then thatBoise State can say theseteams, and this league, willbe missed.
