third in the league. The season ended in an 87-79 loss to Sacramento State in the first round of the WNIT. A longtime assistant for Pacific, Bradley Davis is in his first season as the Tigers’ head coach.

Senior forward Erin Butler is the leading scorer for the Tigers at this point, averaging 16.0 points per game. Sophomore guard GeAnna Luaulu-Summers is the top rebounder with 7.5 per game. The Tigers return two starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s roster. As a team, Pacific is shooting 37.7 percent (52-of-138) from the field, 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the 3-point line and 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the free throw line. The Tigers are averaging 73.0 points per game, while out-rebounding their opponents, aver-aging 47.0 per game.

The Aggies and Tigers have met on the court eight times with Pacific leading the series, 5-3. The teams last met last season in Stockton, where the Tigers came out ahead, 70-62.

SCOUTING BYU – BYU started the 2015-16 season with 78-62 home win over neighbor-ing Utah Valley. However, the Cougars then went on the road, falling 73-47 at Oklahoma and 61-55 at Colorado State. Last season, the Cougars finished the year with a 23-10 record. The team upset top-seeded Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Tournament, eventually claiming the conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars ended the season in an 86-53 loss to No. 3 seed Louisville. Jeff Judkins is in his 15th season as the head coach of the BYU program, where he has compiled a 305-143 record.

Senior guard Lexi Eaton Rydalch is the leading scorer for the Cougars, averaging 21.0 points per game. Junior forward Kalani Purcell is the top rebounder with 10.3 boards per game. Along with Rydalch, who earned honorable mention All-America honors last season, BYU returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s squad. As a team, BYU is shooting 36.9 percent (59-of-160) from the field, 41.7 percent (20-of-48) from the 3-point line and 73.7 percent (42-of-57) from the free throw line. The Cougars are averaging 60.0 points per game, while narrowly out-rebounding their opponents, averaging 35.0 per game.

Very familiar opponents, the Aggies and Cougars have met on the hardwood 36 times in the past. The teams battled into double-overtime in the Spectrum last season, where Utah State eventually fell, 62-58.

FAMILIAR FOES – The all-time series between Utah State and BYU dates back to the 1973-74 season, totaling 36 matchups. The Cougars lead the series, 33-3, with USU’s wins coming in the first two meetings and again in 1978. BYU currently has a 26-game winning streak over Utah State. The 36-game series is the second-longest of any USU opponent, just behind Weber State (39). The Cougars are one of four programs the Ag-gies have faced more than 30 times, joining Weber State, Utah and New Mexico State.

AGAINST THE WCC – Both of this week’s opponents are members of the West Coast Conference. All-time, Utah State is just 14-52 against WCC programs. Of all conference members, the Aggies have the most meetings against BYU, which leads the series, 33-3. Utah State leads just one series against WCC teams, with a 4-2 advantage over Portland.

HIT THE ROAD, JACK – Tuesday’s game in Provo is the first road game for the Aggies this season. Utah State is 7-18 in its road-opener action, while going 106-246 all-time in away games. The last time the Aggies won their first road game of the season was in 2011-12, when they topped current conference foe Wyoming, 62-56 in Laramie. Following Tuesday’s action, Utah State has four road games and one neutral game remaining in the non-conference season. The team will play nine Mountain West matchups on the road before the conference tournament.

STARTING FRESH – With nine newcomers and just one returning starter on the Utah State roster this season, the team is having to rely on young, inexperienced players. Four freshmen have already seen time in the Aggie starting lineup. Guards Katie Toole, Rachel Brewster and Victoria Price have been a part of the starting five, along with center Deja Mason. Toole was the leading scorer in USU’s season opener, scoring 22 points. She and Price have both scored in double digits in both games so far, while Brewster and Mason have led the team in rebounds.

GUESS WHO’S BACK, BACK AGAIN – Sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu is the sole returning starter for the Aggies this season and is jumping back in where she left off last season. The 2014-15 Mountain West Freshman of the Year continues to lead the Ag-gies on the court this season. She has scored in double figures both games of the season, recording the 12th 20-point game of her career in Monday’s win over Westminster with a team-leading 24 points. As the sole returning starter for the Aggies, she leads the team in experience and is looked to by the coaching staff.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME – After playing eight of the 13 non-conference games on the

A courtesy telephone line is available for “offi-cial” visiting radio crews on a reciprocal basis. All other stations requesting broadcast space must pay a rights fee to the Utah State University Athletics Department.

MEDIA INFORMATIONPractices are held daily from approximately 3-6 p.m. at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Practice is generally open to the media, but media person-nel wishing to attend workouts need to contact Megan Allen at 435-797-5547 or [email protected], prior to practice.

DIRECTIONS TO LOGANLogan, Utah is home to Utah State University and is located approximately 80 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah. From Salt Lake International Airport: Take I-80 East out of the airport to 215 North, which will run into I-15 North. Follow I-15 North to exit 362 (Highway 89-91) at Brigham City. Follow Highway 89 into Logan, where it becomes Main Street. Stay on Main Street until you reach 1000 North and turn right. Follow 1000 North east until it runs into the campus.

road during the 2014-15 season, the Aggies are excited to spend the majority of this year’s preseason inside the familiar walls of the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. Including the two exhibition games, Utah State will open the 2015-16 season with five-straight home games. The team will not leave the state until December, when the Aggies play at North-ern Colorado. Since the reinstatement of the USU program in 2003, the Aggies are 89-73 when playing in the Spectrum.

TOUR OF UTAH – There are eight NCAA women’s basketball programs in the state of Utah. Of those, the Aggies will play games against five of them this season. Utah State hosted Dixie State in exhibition action (Nov. 7), as well as Westminster, defeating both teams. Tuesday’s game will be the first of two in Utah County, as the team will return to play at Utah Valley on Dec. 10. The Aggies will conclude the non-conference season at home on Dec. 22, hosting Utah. All-time, Utah State is 35-94 against in-state oppo-nents. The Aggies lead the all-time series against Utah Valley (6-3), Westminster (2-0) and Southern Utah (5-2), while trailing against BYU (3-33), Dixie State (0-1), Weber State (16-23) and Utah (3-32).

OUR OWN UNITED NATIONS – The Utah State coaching staff continues to recruit outside of the United States, building a roster that features five international players from four countries and three continents. Melbourne, Australia has proven to be kind to Utah State, with sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu and freshman guard Rachel Brewster joining the team from Down Under. Europe is represented through senior forwards Ju-lianne Anchling (Faverges de la Tour, France) and Tijana Djukic (Kikinda, Serbia). This season, Utah State also welcomes junior forward Angelica de Paulo, a native of São Paulo, Brazil.

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS – Another strong recruiting area for the Aggies is the Lone Star State. This season’s team has four Texas natives on it, who all come from rich basketball backgrounds. Junior college transfer forward Antoina Robinson is a Dallas native, while freshman guard Victoria Price grew up in Grand Prairie, a Dallas suburb. Sophomore guard Baylee Peck hails from Leander, about 180 miles outside of Dallas, and freshman center Deja Mason went to high school in San Antonio.

STOPPING THE CAROUSEL – As Utah State head coach Jerry Finkbeiner enters his fourth season at the helm of the program, this will be the first time he has had the same full staff of assistant coaches for two consecutive years. Micha Thompson is the lon-gest-tenured Aggie assistant, as she joined Finkbeiner in his first season at USU in 2012. Ben Finkbeiner and JC Carter both joined the staff last season.

SOMETHING TO PROVE – Utah State women’s basketball has been picked ninth in the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll as voted on by a panel of the league’s 11 head coaches and media representatives. Colorado State, the 2014-15 regu-lar-season champion, was picked to finish first in the conference with 237 points, includ-ing 12 first-place votes. New Mexico was tabbed second with 221 total points and seven first-place votes, while last season’s tournament champion, Boise State, came in third with 215 points, including six first-place votes. Fresno State was selected fourth with 182 points, followed by UNLV (138 points) and San Diego State (135 points). Wyoming was slated seventh (125), with San José State coming in eighth (93). The Aggies hold the ninth-place spot with 79 points, one point ahead of Nevada in ninth with 78. Air Force rounds out the 11-team poll with 26 points.

EARLY ACCOLADES – Utah State sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu, the defending MW Freshman of the Year, was selected to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team. Nak-kasoglu is the first Utah State player to receive the preseason nod since the Aggies joined the Mountain West. She is the first to be named to the preseason all-conference list since Devyn Christensen was named to the Preseason All-Western Athletic Conference First-Team prior to the 2012-13 season. Joining Nakkasoglu on the preseason team is Boise State junior guard Brooke Pahukoa, Colorado State junior guard Ellen Nystrom, New Mexico senior forward Khadijah Shumpert and Wyoming senior guard Marquelle Dent.

UP NEXT – After a weekend off, the Aggies will leave the state for the first time this season. The team plays at Northern Colorado on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. Utah State returns home that weekend, hosting Haskell Indian Nations on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m.

LIVE AT THE SPECTRUM – Admission to Utah State’s women’s basketball games is $5 for adults, $1 for children. A women’s sports pass is also available for $75. Contact the USU Athletics Ticket Office at (435) 797-0305 or at 1-888-U-STATE-1 (1-888-878-2831) for more information or visit the Utah State athletic website at utahstateaggies.com.

THE LAST TIME OUTUtah State 78, Pacific 70

November 16, 2015Utah State 74, Westminster 67

November 16, 2015

Facing a short turnaround in game action, the Utah State women’s basketball was undeterred as it topped in-state foe Westminster, 74-67, at home Monday.

This was the Aggies’ first win of the season, as the team improves to 1-1. As a Division II program, Mon-day’s game was an exhibi-tion for Westminster, who therefore remain 1-1 on the year.

Sophomore guard Funda Nakkasoglu for the top scor-er for the Aggies Monday, tallying 24 points. Joining her in double figures were freshmen guards Katie Toole and Victoria Price with 11 and 10, respectively.

Freshman center Deja Mason and junior forward Antoina Robinson led the team in rebounding with nine apiece.

Overall, the Aggies topped the Griffins in most major categories. USU turned the ball over just 12 times throughout the game, while picking up 12 steals and three assists. The Aggies also out-rebounded Westminster, 36-32.

Westminster opened the game with the early control, jumping out to the early lead. Playing at a much slower pace than Saturday’s competition, however, Utah State was able to maintain more consis-tent possession, and capitalize on offensive opportunities. With 1:30 remaining the in the first quarter, freshman guard Rachel Brewster pushed USU ahead with a 3-pointer.

The Aggies carried the momentum into the second quarter, extend-ing the lead before allowing Westminster to catch up. The Griffins gained the scoring advantage in the final two minutes of the quarter, but a trey from Robinson and a set of successful free throws from Nakkasoglu put the Aggies up 41-38 at the halftime break.

The game picked up physically in the third quarter, as the fouls add-ed up. With the increased defense though, the Aggies also gained speed on the offensive side of the court. Utah State found its first double-digit lead of the night late in the third on a layup from fresh-man guard Lindsey Jensen.

Throughout the fourth quarter, Westminster chipped away at the USU lead. After three minutes of neither team being able to score, Nakkasoglu snapped the skid with a pair of free throws. As the final minutes of the game ticked down, Nakkasoglu went on a hot streak for the Aggies, scoring the team’s final 10 points. Though the Griffins were able to scatter shots in between Nakkasoglu’s streak, it wasn’t enough to catch USU, securing the win for the Aggies.

Overall, Utah State shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from the 3-point line and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the free throw line. Westminster shot 48.0 percent (24-of-50) from the field, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from three and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

Sophomore point guard Funda Nakkasoglu scored a career-high 37 points as Utah State’s women’s basketball won its second straight game in thrilling fashion, beating Pacific 78-70 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Saturday night.

Nakkasoglu, whose pre-vious career high was 28 points set at New Mexico last season, shot 11-for-24 from the field and 13-for-14 from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds and one assist. Nakkasoglu is the first Aggie to score 30 points in a game since Jen-nifer Schlott had 38 against Utah during the 2013-14 campaign.

The game featured 18 lead changes and 14 ties.

Tijana Djukic also had a career night for the Aggies (2-1), who scored the final nine points of the game. The senior forward had a ca-reer-high-tying 14 points, to go along with a career-best 15 rebounds.Freshman guard Rachel Brewster scored in double figures for the first time in her career with 11 points. She also grabbed eight re-bounds as Utah State out-rebounded Pacific 49-34, including an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass.

Hailie Eackles and Eli Lopez Sagrera led the Tigers (2-2) with 24 and 18 points apiece, respectively.

A layup by Eackles gave Pacific a 70-69 lead with 3:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. That was the last basket by the Tigers as they missed the final six shots they took from the field. The visitors from Stockton, Calif., shot 37.9 percent on the night and committed 13 turnovers.

Fittingly, it was Nakkasoglu that gave Utah State the lead back for good as she knocked down a couple of free throws with 2:24 remain-ing. Nakkasoglu scored six points during the Aggies’ game-ending 9-0 run.

Eackles scored 10 of her points in the first quarter to help Pacific open up an 18-13 lead. An Eackles 3-pointer gave the Tigers their largest lead of the night, 23-15, with 7:41 remaining in the second quarter.

However, the Aggies clawed back and tied the game at 30-apiece with 43 seconds left until halftime, but Lopez Sagrera knocked down two free throws to give the Tigers a 32-30 lead at intermission.

Both teams heated up from the floor in the third quarter as Utah State shot 45.5 percent from the field, while Pacific shot 61.5 percent. A 3-pointer by freshman guard Katie Toole gave Utah State a 40-39 lead with 6:54 remaining in the quarter. It was the Aggies’ first lead since the 4:01 mark of the first.

A couple of free throws by Nakkasoglu gave the Aggies a 58-57 lead heading into the fourth.

AGAINST THE COMPETITION

A strong defense holding the op-ponent to a sea-son-low three-point percentage wasn’t enough for the Utah State women’s basket-ball team, as its winning streak was cut short in a 70-62 loss at Pacific.

Freshman guard Funda Nak-kasoglu again led the Aggies in scoring, record-ing 21 points. Senior guard Franny Vaau-lu became the first Utah State player to record a double-dou-ble this season, with 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Freshman center Hannah Hutchins was also in dou-ble-digits, scoring 12 points. Kendall Kenyon led the Tigers with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The Aggies capitalized on free throw opportunities in the first half, shooting a perfect 19-for-19 from the stripe. Nakkasoglu led the way with 11 of her own free throws, for 13 total points in the half. While both teams shot well from the free throw line, neither made a three-point shot in the first half. Utah State shot 0-for-4 from behind the arc, while Pacific was 0-for-14.

At the buzzer, senior guard Elise Nelson attempted a half-court shot. While it went in, she did not release the ball in time to count. Utah State went into the locker room with its largest halftime lead of the season, up 35-23.

The Tigers came out of the break strong offensively. The second half opened with a 23-10 run for Pacific, who took the lead near the nine-minute mark. As the Tigers pulled ahead by as many as 12 points, Utah State did not score over a five-minute stretch. Vaaulu ended the scoring drought, just a few minutes before she scored the sole three-point shot the Aggies would earn.

Turnovers also proved to be deadly for the Aggies in the second half. The Aggies committed 14 turnovers in the final 20 minutes of play. Off those turnovers, Pacific scored 10 points. Conversely, the Tiger turned the ball over 16 times total, seven of which occurred in the second half.

The increased action on the Pacific end of the court brought out the Aggie defense, resulting in several fouls all the way around. By the final buzzer, both teams had accumulated 59 total fouls, with 33 called against the Aggies. Nelson was the first player to make it the five-foul mark, fouling out for the second time this season. Senior forward Ingrida Strikas joined her on the bench after a technical foul was her fifth of the night. Later, a technical was also issued to USU head coach Jerry Finkbeiner, his first of the year. With less than three minutes to go, Kendall Kenyon became the first Pacific player disqualified on fouls. In the final minute, freshman guard Tilar Clark and junior guard Mariah Miles were also out with their fifth fouls.

Overall, Utah State shot 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the field, including a 14.3 percentage (1-of-11) from three. The Aggies shot 87.1 percent from the free throw line, the best percentage since going 10-for-10 at Oregon State. Pacific shot 31.7 percent (19-of-60) from the field, 12.0 percent (3-of-25) from three and 70.7 percent (29-of-41) from the free throw line.

AGAINST THE COMPETITION

Utah State wom-en’s basketball’s home winning streak came to and end Mon-day night, when the Aggies fell to in-state rival BYU, 62-58, in a double overtime defensive battle.

Freshman guard Funda Nak-kasoglu led the team in scoring with 19 points in her eighth dou-ble-digit game of the year. Senior forward Franny Vaaulu had her second dou-ble-double of the season, with a season-best 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Elise Nelson was next, just shy of a double-double with 11 boards and eight points. Morgan Bailey led the Cougars with a double-double of her own, with 19 points and 22 rebounds, while Lexi Eaton added 29 points.

From the very first whistle, Monday’s game was a battle on both sides of the court. After the fast-paced, high-scoring game at Sacramento State last week, the Aggies had to slow their offense to match the Cougars. BYU was first on the board off a pair of free throws, but that lead wouldn’t last long, as the game would end with six lead changes and 10 ties.

In the first half, BYU led by as many as seven points, as Eaton led with 11 points. The final three minutes of the half were scoreless for both teams, sending the Cougars into the break with a 23-18 lead.

The second half opened slowly and was very back-and-forth for both teams. By the mid-point of the half, BYU went on an 8-0 run to find it’s largest lead of the night with an 11-point advantage. However, Utah State responded well, finishing the period with an 18-5 run of its own.

With less than two minutes remaining, Nelson took an elbow to the face, warranting a flagrant foul to be called against Eaton. Nelson made both free throws , but the Aggies would go on to miss the front ends of the next three available one-and-one opportu-nities. While Eaton tied the score at 50 with three seconds to play, Nakkasoglu wasn’t able to capitalize on her last-second shot, sending the game to extra time.

The first overtime period was an uneventful one, as each team scored just once. Bailey went to the paint with a successful layup in the first minute of play, but it wasn’t until the final 30 seconds that freshman center Hannah Hutchins made a shot for the Aggies.

The second overtime was more productive on both ends, but BYU was able to just edge USU. The teams traded buckets for the majority of the period, with the last Aggie points coming off a layup from Vaaulu in the final minute. With nine seconds to go, Eaton made two free throws, solidifying the win for the Cougars.

Overall, Utah State shot 30.6 percent (22-of-72) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from three and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line. BYU shot 30.9 percent (21-of-68) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line.

JERRY FINKBEINERHead CoachFourth SeasonSouthern Nazarene, ‘80Overall Record: 517-296 (.636), 27 yearsUSU Record: 43-54 (.443), 4 years

Jerry Finkbeiner is in his fourth season as the head women’s basketball coach at Utah State.

Finkbeiner (pronounced Fink-by-ner) was named the ninth head coach in USU program history on April 26, 2012. He is the second male coach in Utah State history along with Bob Corbin who was the Aggies’ coach from 1984-86. Finkbeiner is only the second USU coach since the reinstatement of the program in 2003 when Raegan Pebley took over.

Overall, Finkbeiner has a 515-295 (.636) record in 26 years as a collegiate head coach at Oral Rob-erts (1996-2013), Southern Nazarene (1991-96) and USU. He also ranks 28th in the nation among active coaches with his 515 career wins.

In 2014-15, Finkbeiner coached the Aggies to an 8-23 record, going 5-13 in Mountain West play. That year, Finkbeiner led guard Funda Nakkasoglu to the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award. Ad-ditionally, Nakkasoglu earned honorable mention all-conference accolades. At the conclusion of the season, senior forward Franny Vaaulu became the second of Finkbeiner’s players to sign a profession-al contract, playing for the Wolfpack in Wolfenbüt-tel, Germany.

In the classroom, four players earned academ-ic all-Mountain West honors, while three were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes.

During the summer of 2014, Finkbeiner took the Aggie women on an eight-day trip to the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. On the trip, the team played against local club and university teams, hosted coaches and children’s clinics and toured the sights.

In the 2013-14 season, Finkbeiner led the Aggies to a 15-16 overall record, while going 8-10 in league play in their first year in the Mountain West. The team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Moun-tain West Championships, falling to Colorado State.

That year, Finkbeiner coached guard Jennifer Schlott to several accolades and records. Schlott finished the year third in the nation in scoring with 26.2 points per game. She was named the Mountain West Player of the Year and became USU’s first-ev-er AP All-American, earning honorable mention accolades. She became the all-time leading scorer at Utah State, ending her career with 1,556 points. Schlott was invited to a WNBA training camp with the Indiana Fever, before signing a professional contract to play for Tapiolan Honka in Finland.

Off the court, the 2013-14 Aggies also succeeded academically. Six student-athletes received aca-demic all-Mountain West honors, while two were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes.

In Finkbeiner’s debut season in 2012-13, the Aggies achieved an 18-14 record. USU finished second in the Western Athletic Conference standings for the second-straight season with a 14-4 mark. Under the direction of Finkbeiner, Utah State advanced to the postseason for the third-straight season, as the Ag-gies played in the Women’s Basketball Invitational. USU finished the season second in the nation in free throw percentage with a school and WAC re-cord 80.1 percent. Three players were honored by the WAC as Devyn Christensen earned first-team honors, while Jennifer Schlott and Jenna Johnson earned second and third-team honors, respective-ly.

The Aggies also found success in the classroom under Finkbeiner as five players earned academic all-WAC honors.

Finkbeiner came to Utah State from Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla., where he spent 16 years as head coach. During his tenure at ORU, the Golden Ea-gles averaged 17 wins per season and advanced to postseason play eight times with five trips to the NCAA Tournament and three appearances in the WNIT.

As the head coach at Oral Roberts, Finkbeiner led the Golden Eagles to seven Summit League regular season and tournament titles and six 20-win sea-sons. At ORU, Finkbeiner coached five All-Amer-icans, eight conference players of the year, five conference newcomers of the year and 26 all-con-ference selections. He was named conference coach of the year twice during his ORU tenure.

In his six years prior to ORU, Finkbeiner led South-ern Nazarene to three-straight NAIA national titles and a combined 99-4 record from 1994 to 1996. Finkbeiner posted a 186-20 record in six seasons at SNU. During his career at Southern Nazarene, Finkbeiner coached nine NAIA All-Americans and a two-time NAIA Player of the Year, while five of his players went on to play professional basketball overseas.

During his tenure at Southern Nazarene, Finkbein-er’s coaching achievements did not go unnoticed, as he was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1994, 1995 and 1996. He was also named as the College Sports Magazine and Converse Nation-al Coach of the Year in 1995. Finkbeiner was named the NAIA District 9 Coach of the Year in 1993 and the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year from 1992 to 1996.

Finkbeiner, a native of Southern California, attend-ed Southern Nazarene in Oklahoma City, Okla. from 1975-80, where he was a four-year letterwinner. In that time, he was selected as a Christian Collegiate All-American in 1978. Finkbeiner graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in physical educa-tion and completed his master’s degree in physical education at Northwest Missouri State Universi-ty. Along with coaching at SNU, Finkbeiner also worked as a professor in the kinesiology and sports management department.

Finkbeiner and his wife, Reva, have five children and two daughters-in-law, Isaac (Angela), Ben (Alycia), Corban (Nathan), Micha (Tommy) and Bethany. His son, Ben, is an assistant coach for the Aggies.
